Imagine walking down the street and then out of nowhere a person shouts obscenities
at others based on the way they look or because of what they affiliate with. This
person may feel as if they have just been both verbally and emotionally attacked. With
the current state of hate speech laws, there is nothing that could be done to punish the
instigator of the hate speech. Hate has a strong connection to United States history.
Slaves were a result of being hateful to those who were different, and Jim Crow
laws were a consequence of a hatred for those who were different also. As much
time has passed since then, America has gotten more progressive although there
are still people who are hateful of others for they way they are. Hate speech laws
are necessary in the United States and should be passed because passing them
would create and foster a more tolerant society, help to decrease the negative risk
associated with them, and prevent violent acts of hate which tend to be preceded
by hate speech. Opposition to all forms of hate speech laws are quite passionate.
People who are adamant against hate speech laws affirm their beliefs through the
First Amendment. Believing that the First Amendment protects all types of speech,
no matter how terrible, these people go about calling others snowflakes just for
protesting hate speech. Instead of actually understanding the harmful effects that
have been proven by researchers they instead trivialize the effects (Neilsen 10 11).
This type of resistive thinking is incorrect because most people do not understand
that no right is absolute. Speech nowadays is already limited in some places, so
passing a hate speech law today would not change much, and would instead allow
people who commit repeated hate speech to be culpable. Critics of hate speech laws
also feel that passing laws against it will instead imperil speech that counters it.
These critics believe that hate speech laws are counter intuitive and will harm any
current efforts to protest hate speech (Arthur 16). Believers in this ideology are
wrong because any judge or person would have the common sense to differentiate
between hate speech and speech that counters hate speech. Also people are able to use

The main character in the book thief was Liesel. Liesel was presented by the death
of her father because of his Communist sympathies. On the way to her foster home,
on the train, he brother dies unexpectedly, this effect Liesel. She picks up a book
off the ground that fell out one of the gravedigger s jacket and keeps it hence the
name the book thief . After the death of her brother Liesel is vulnerable, she opens
up when she arrives at the Hubermanns her foster home because she can trust them

The main character Liesel has lost her foster parents and Rudy due to the bombing
of Himmel Street. The bombing shows devastation of war and hatred. At the very
end of the novel, Liesel is reunited with Max; it is assumed that max and Liesel
spend their lives together. The message of the book thief is guilt. Guilt is shown
throughout the novel. It most of the gilt overlooking Hans this was because in
France during world war one Hans life was spared by Erik Vandenberg Max s
father. Courage is show when Hans lets Max hide in to their house so he can get
better. I am satisfied with the ending with the book thief but it was quite hard to
follow. It was hard to follow because at the end Liesel died (of old age) then death

times. Liesel asks if Death could understand it; Death does not respond. Death wants

Kingdom is the Doctrine of separation of powers, such as Parliament sovereignty

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich uses Martha Ballard s diary to portray life in rural New
England in the late 1700 and early 1800 s. Using this diary and other historical
material she recreates the 27 years of life that Martha has disclosed in her diary. By
using Martha s life and words she recreates what living was like during the pre
industrial era. She features the role that midwives and women in general played in
the economic survival of families during this era. The diaryby itself does not shed
light on all the social and cultural traditions of Martha Ballards time. By using it with

Although the story focuses on the works of Martha Ballard she makes it perfectly
clear in the book that caring for the health of others was the responsibility of all
women in the community. Very rarely in the book did Martha attend someone on by
herself. Ulrich states, In such circumstances it was comforting to have the women
with her; they could witness her efforts to ensure a safe delivery and they could
assist with the sorrowful task of preparing an infant for burial. Several times in the
diary Ballard referenced someone laying out the deceased in their funeral clothes or
the after nurse that came to help with a newborn. Martha Ballard had her own family
and home duties to attend. It is chronicled that she would often times stay for days
with someone but it is unrealistic to think she could take care of all things herself.
Ulrich discusses infant mortality rate and that the support of the community is
what made Martha such a great midwife. Ballard did not simply just show up at a
birth. The impending parents had to choose her and ask her to come. Such
confidence comes by word of mouth from someone that has had their child
delivered by Martha. Even those who lost a child can attest that Ballard did all she
could to try to save their child. Having the women present also gives someone else
