1. How To Do A Persuasive Essay
Writing an essay on the topic of "How To Do A Persuasive Essay" can be a challenging task, as
it requires a combination of analytical thinking, effective communication skills, and a thorough
understanding of persuasive writing techniques. Crafting a compelling persuasive essay involves
not only presenting your ideas clearly but also persuading your audience to adopt your point of
view.
One of the challenges lies in the need for thorough research to support your arguments. A
persuasive essay requires well-substantiated claims, supported by credible evidence and
examples. This demands time and effort spent in gathering and analyzing information to ensure
the validity of your assertions.
Structuring the essay is another hurdle. An effective persuasive essay typically follows a logical
progression, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs presenting arguments, and a persuasive
conclusion. Organizing thoughts coherently and ensuring a smooth flow between paragraphs can
be demanding, especially for those new to the genre.
Moreover, mastering the art of persuasion is crucial. Writers must understand their target
audience, anticipate counterarguments, and skillfully address opposing viewpoints. Convincing
the reader to adopt a particular stance requires finesse in language and rhetoric, making it a
nuanced and demanding aspect of the writing process.
Additionally, achieving the right balance between ethos, pathos, and logos—appealing to
credibility, emotions, and logic, respectively—adds complexity to the task. This requires a
deep understanding of the persuasive strategies that resonate with your specific audience.

Seminar in Law Enforcement
Explain the origin and various theories regarding the Police Subculture. Discuss the
impact this subculture has had on policing on American society.
The law enforcement code of ethics is composed of three parts. The first part
concerns equal protection. Police officers must enforce the law regardless of the
race, sex, class, or identity of the offender. Secondly, policemust follow the law
themselves. Civil liberties cannot be violated. Thirdly, they are held to a moral
standard above and beyond that of many members of the public. They are not
allowed to use their power for personal gain or live immorally. Instead of practicing a

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects,
against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants

The first clause in the Fourth Amendment contains a simple prohibition;
unreasonable searches and seizures are forbidden. The clause does not go into
detail on the meaning of unreasonable. The second clause places a set of limits on
the issuance of search or arrest warrants. Three limits are listed as: warrants must be
supported by probable cause, they must define where the search is to take place, and
they must define what the object of the search pertaining to who or what is to be
seized.
The second clause limits the use of warrants, but never says when the government
must use them. The Fourth Amendment text somewhat says that the police may
search or seize without a warrant, if the search or seizure is reasonable. This is
unsurprising given the Fourth Amendment s origins. Madison was concerned with
preventing a recurrence of illegal searches and the safest way to do that was to
severely limit the use of

The Early Accomplishments of John Marshall
John Marshall began as a soldier who became part of George Washington?s
command group. After John was discharged, he pursued his legal career with a
formal education, which was quite casual at the time. He established a practice in
Richmond and became very successful. Marshall was very casual yet received a
reputation for being outstanding regardless of his messy look. In the late 1780?s,
John was a successful member of the Richmond bar. He was known for his ability
to handle cases on appeal and he was a lawyer?s lawyer. Lawyers called on him to
argue their cases before high courts. He was a great interpreter of the U. S.

Although there are many cases that are more significant these first cases show the
precedent he set. (1)
The federal judiciary was established as a significant institution in 1801. President
John Adams was leaving the office involuntarily and feared the death of the Federalist
Party. He thought he could keep it going in the court system by appointing John
Marshall as Chief Justice of the United States and the Judiciary Act of 1801 was
another part of his plan. The law relieved the Supreme Court Justices from riding
circuit and holding court away from home for the older men. It created circuit
judgeships, which would be filled by Federalists. The Chief Justice appointment and
the Judiciary Act made the courts a great political battleground. The Supreme Court
was the main target because it was not considered a significant institution and
received little attention. As Chief Justice, John Jay felt his duties so light that he
became American minister to the Court of St. James?s and then to campaign
successfully for governor of New York. He did not consider a second appointment
to be worthwhile. Also, Oliver Ellsworth as Chief Justice had enough time to be a
minister to France in 1800. It was not considered unusual for John Marshall to
continue to be Secretary of State in the Adams administration for one month while he
was serving as Chief Justice. (2)
The Court never demonstrated itself to be a very

My Jungian Typology is Extraverted Sensing Feeling Judging (ESFJ). According
to Carl Jung and Isabel Briggs Myers personality type theory, I enjoy entertaining,
giving, and being in charge. I am also easily hurt and when I feel hurt, it s
impossible to hide. I have a hard time making a decision because I am torn between
choosing what is right for others instead of the right choice for me. I have a good
sense of danger and I tend to tread carefully in situations that could result in negative
consequences for others and myself.

Extraverted Sensing Thinking Judging (ESTJ); therefore, the only difference was that
I was more Feeling than Thinking.
I learned from the Jungian personality assessment that I can handle communicating
differently depending on the topic. Communication is easier for me if the topic
involves emotions or resolving ongoing issues. I can have a hard time
communicating if the discussion does not have a clear direction or solution. I also
prefer to be involved in helpful conversation as opposed to a conversation that does
not provide any gains. It is easier for me to retain information when tangible
examples are specified, so that I can relate the information to personal or emotional
experience.
The results from the productivity quiz showed that I am productive, but still require
some improvement. There are five elements of being productive which include:
organization, attitude, delegations, information systems, and effective use of
systems. The area of organization is where I could use the most improvement.
6. Introduction Of A Six Sigma Project Has Been Performed

Introduction
A six sigma project has been performed on Music Co. as the company was
experiencing a high number of tickets relating to its digital release planning system
that caused delays in expected release date. The delays affected customer
satisfaction because if the music vendor did not release their recording on time, it
would lead the customer to opt for a pirated version, which also causes company
loss in sales. The company hopes the project team can use DMAIC to analyze and
improve their release process in a timely fashion with fewer errors. They also hope to
find out what reasons caused the delays and eliminate the root causes. The planning
involves various human based processes, so the company wants to achieve as few
errors as possible.
Summary
Before they start to utilize DMAIC into this project, they have created a project
qualification checklist to weigh and focus on segments that they should concentrate
and improve on. However, they finalized this project as a must do and will be able to
grow the process but cannot reengineer the whole procedure.
As stated above, the company used DMAIC to define the problem and solve it. In
this project, the author has also included lessons learned at the end of the project. So
the report has been well classified into 5 parts accordingly Define, Measure, Analyze,
Improve, and Control.
Step 1: Define phase
In this phase, the project team created a SIPOC diagram to analyze the complete

Collision repair services are often vital after you have been involved in even
relatively minor auto accidents, but they can also be a little expensive. However,
there are various methods available that can save you money on collision repair

Make Sure That The Repair Service Is Willing To Use Aftermarket Parts
One of the first things you should do when trying to save money on collision repair
is to make sure that any repair service that you hire will be willing to use aftermarket
parts. This is useful because aftermarket parts are typically going to be a lot cheaper
than anything that you could get from the manufacturer of your vehicle. Additionally,
sometimes aftermarket parts may actually be

Ben Van Beurden, Chief Executive Officer of Royal Dutch Shell has laid out an
ambitious plan to overtake Exxon Mobil, the number one gas company in the

was overtaken by its rivals using the acquisition route. Mr. Beurden believes that
Shell will be able to regain its lost glory post the acquisition of the BG group.
I am determined to get us to that number one place, Mr. Beurden said after outlining
the company s long term strategy in London. I want to create a world class

Though Shell has narrowed the gap for total shareholder returns, Exxon still has an

After the purchase of BG, the total debt of Shell has increased to $81 billion,
whereas Exxon with $43 billion of debt has options left on the table.
To impress the investor community, Shell plans to increase its free cash flow per
share, improve its returns and run the company conservatively. In order to do so,
Shell has capped annual investments at $30 billion until 2020 and it has left options
open to reduce spending below its lower target range of $25 billion in case crude
price hovers close to the current levels of $50 per barrel or drops below it.
It plans to slow down investments in the liquefied natural gas business as
9. Stone Castle Research Paper
Attacking
Fire
Fire was the best way to attack the early Motte and Bailey castles since they were
made entirely of wood. The fire might be started by building a bonfire against the
outer wooden fence (palisade) or, more usually, by archers shooting fire arrows into
the castle. As the fire spread through the castle those living inside would be forced to
leave allowing the attackers to take them prisoner or kill them. This was one of the
reasons why Motte and Bailey castles were soon replaced by Stone Keep castles. Fire
has little effect on a stone castle.
Battering Ram
The thick stone walls of the Stone Keep castles were difficult for men to knock
down. Although pickaxes could be used against castles with thinner walls, it would
take a very long time to knock a hole through a castle with very thick walls. The
battering ram was particularly useful since the weight of several men would be put
behind it. This would make it a considerable force that could seriously weaken and
possibly destroy doors or walls.

10. The Effects of Cohabitation in Todays Societ Essay
The Effects of Cohabitation on Todays Society
Erin Bedard
Cohabitation is replacing marriage as the first living together experience for young
men and women. When blushing brides walk down the aisle at the beginning of the
new millennium, well over half have already lived together with a boyfriend.
For today s young adults, the first generation to come of age during the divorce
revolution, living together seems like a good way to achieve some of the benefits of
marriage and avoid the risk of divorce. Couples who live together can share
expenses and learn more about each other. They can find out if their partner has
what it takes to be married. If things don t work out, breaking up is easy to do.

Opponents of cohabitation commonly cite statistics that indicate that couples who
have lived together before marriage are more likely to divorce, and that unhappiness,
ill health, poverty, and domestic violence are more common in unmarried couples
than in married ones. Cohabitation advocates, in turn, cite limited research that either
disproves these claims or indicates that the statistical differences are due to other
factors than the fact of cohabitation itself. Studies conducted through the 70 s, 80 s
and 90 s showed that cohabitation has a strong correlation with divorce. Recent
studies, however, have pointed to possible different results. Cohabitation is on the
rise, and many people are okay with it.
Should We Live Together? A Comprehensive Look at the Research
The number of common law couple families surged 19 per cent to almost 1.4 million.
The number of single parent families increased 7.8 per cent, also reaching 1.4
million and accounting for 16 per cent of families.
There was also a hike in common law relationships in general, with 2.8 million
persons aged 15 and over reporting they lived with their partner outside of marriage
in 2006.
They accounted for 10.8 per cent of the population, up from 9.7 per cent in 2001.
Common law relationships are still most popular in Quebec, where their numbers
soared by more than 20 per cent since 2001 to comprise 44.4 per cent of the
Canadian total in 2006.

12. Hobbes Social Contract Essay
The natural state of man has been a reoccurring theme when reviewing the history
of political philosophy and theory. This study has helped societies develop laws and
common goals. Thomas Hobbes (1588 1679) theory is still strikingly relevant in
today s law and order. His main concern was how people lived: how to avoid war
since people lived in defensive fear. Jean Jacques Rousseau(1712 1778) challenged
Hobbes s philosophy. He says, The passage from the state of nature to the civil state
produces a very remarkable change in man, by substituting justice for instinct in his
conduct. In other words, he thought that men were good by nature and when exposed
to society they are corrupted. Although both philosophers study the course of society,
they have very divergent views. This paper will examine both theories of the social
contract. Thus, I will later conclude why Hobbes has a more feasible hypothesis.
In Leviathan chapter 12, Hobbes describes society and the state of nature as such;
No arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger
of violent death: and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short. People
are encouraged to act freely, but with precautions as they may pose a threat to others
survival. As stated above, humankind is constantly threatened since we naturally have
a built in defensive mechanism. He says, ...the passions that incline men to peace
are: fear of death; desire of such things as are necessary to

Sinclair makes the lower class seem like animals getting ready to pounce on their
prey. Sinclair says while he gazed at her as helpless as a wounded animal, the

animal who is an unseen enemy in the eyes of capitalists. Socialists like Jurgis
demand the right to have equal wages and rights as the upper class. These demands
by guys in the socialists class are what cause them to be the unseen enemies. The
upperclassmen don t like to pay socialists like Jurgis high wages because they wont
make as much profit. Sinclair exaggerates the ideas or thoughts of socialists
causing it to be Propaganda. Sinclair exaggerates the story by showing the struggle
of the lower class and or socialists. Sinclair uses many events like when Stanislovas
was eaten alive by rats because he fell asleep in the alley. Another example would
be Jurgis s wife Ona had to work twelve hour shifts and had to sleep with her boss
for the whole night. Sinclair uses propaganda to show how bad the conditions of the
lower class actually are. The fact of the matter is none of these events could actually

Technology is the best way to reduce the impact of an earthquake to what extent do
you agree with this view? (40 marks)
An earthquake is a sudden violent shaking of the ground, typically causing great
destruction, as a result of movements within the earth s crust or volcanic action.
Impacts of an earthquake can include short term impacts such as fatalities, or long
term impacts such as income lost through lack of tourism. Technology can be used to
predict the likelihood of an earthquake occurring in a particular area, for example by
detecting plate movement, and this can reduce the impacts of an earthquake in return.
This essay will discuss whether technology is the best way to reduce the impact of an
earthquake or not.

Tsunamis are usually caused by tectonic displacement of the ocean floor often
resulting in an underwater earthquake. This happened on Boxing Day in 2004 in the
Indian Ocean where there was a 1000km thrust fault from a release of stress along the
constructive destructive plate boundary. No technology was in place to detect such a
disaster and, although scientists knew a tsunami was likely to hit Southern Asia, most
of the warnings were too late and the first TV broadcasts in Thailand even happened
after the waves had hit. Up to 290,000 people were killed and thousands of bodies
are still missing to this day. Since this disaster, a tsunami warning systemhas been put
in place in the Indian Ocean and technology such as this is almost guaranteed to
prevent such a high death toll for the future. There is a strong argument that if such
technology was implemented before 2004, then thousands of lives could have been
saved through evacuation and similar measures. Technology is the best way to reduce
the impacts of earthquakes because they can predict a upcoming earthquake, allowing
residents of an area time to evacuate to safe land, saving many lives. However, there
are many other ways of reducing the impacts of earthquakes and technology has its
limitations.
The effectiveness of earthquake monitoring and warning systems are limited as many
authorities choose to ignore warning signs to avoid disruption to businesses and

18. Analysis Of White Tigers By Maxine Hong-Kingston
One of my first impressions of the story White Tigers by Maxine Hong Kingston is
that the story that she shares with the reader is what I believed to be a dream that
she had. I thought that this dream was inspired by the times her and her mother
spoke their own language, talk story. Talking story is a dialect that transcends our
basic comprehension of communication. It is the hybrid of our own language, and
the power of storytelling fused upon one another. I thought that Kingston told us
this story because it was the best dream that she has ever imagined. This story was
so moving for her since she felt a deep connection with it. However, I assumed that
this story was just generic. I overlooked the familiarity that this story had. I
envisioned that Hong Kingston was telling us her own version of the tale of Fa Mu
Lan. Thousands of years ago, The Ballad of Fa Mu Lan, written by Tzu Yeh is about
a woman, Fa Mu Lan. Mu Lan was extraordinary because she took her father s place
in battle when he was chosen to fight. Not only was she brave, and thoughtful, she
was the first ever woman to go to battle and live. Then I went back to White Tigers,
and saw that after the fantasy that she created was stated, she reflects back on her
childhood which was just merely depressing. After reading both the Ballad, and
White Tigers, I realized that she injected herself into this fantasy because she wanted
to rebel as did Mu Lan. Being femalefor Hong Kingston was a living nightmare,

This was always one of the most disappointing sentences that came out of my

The sudden surge of interes in Tsang s work can be explained by its connection to
Hong Kong s society; the process of creating culture, rather than preserving it. Due
to the political and social factors in Hong Kong s society today, Tsang s work is
perpetually relevant. His work highlights the themes of property ownership, post
colonialism, power, and territoriality. Even 17 years after the handover back to
China, and 7 years after Tsou Choi Tsang s death, his work is still powerful and
influential as it covers topics which several locals can relate to. Tsou Choi Tsang,
better recognised by the title of the King of Kowloon came to Hong Kong at the age
of 16. He had very limited education. He worked as a construction worker, however a

21. Sexual Harassment Essay
Sexual harassment is so ordinary in the workforce that frequently we fail to even
recognize harassing behavior as immoral. This is because so many of us women
and men alike have become desensitized to offensive behaviors. Sexual harassment
in any form is unacceptable behavior and should not be tolerated by anyone. It
undermines our ability to study, to work, and to feel like effective, empowered
people in the world.
The U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission describes sexual harassment as
a form of gender discrimination that is in violation of the Title VII of the 1964 Civil
Rights Act. Undesirable sexual advances, request for sexual favors, and further verbal
and physical conduct of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment, ... Show more

In addition to, The Society for Human Resource Management has reported that 62%
of companies offer sexual harassment prevention training programs, and 97% have a
written sexual harassment policy (Sexual Harassment in the Workplace).
Over the last decade the number of grievance filed with EEOC has gradually
decreased. For example, in 1997 approximately 16,000 complaints of sexual
harassment were filed. Last year, the number of complaints dropped to 11,717
which 16.4% of charges were filed by men (Sexual Harassment Charges). The
common of complaints reported to the EEOC came from women; conversely the
quantity of complaints filed by men is ever increasing, along with increasing
numbers of men filing against female supervisors. In 2007, 16% of complaints filed
with the EEOC were filed by men (Sexual Harassment Charges).
Men are increasingly claiming they re victims of sexual harassment and sexual
harassment of men does occur. The first ever court case involving sexual
harassment of a man in the workplace was in 1995. The EEOC sued Domino Pizza
after a female supervisor of a male store manager sexually harassed him and then
fired him (Tahmincioglu, 2007). In 1998 a ruling by the Supreme Court involving a
Louisiana man, who claimed he was sexually harassed by his male manager while
working on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico, made it clear that men are protected
from such harassment at work under Title VII of the Civil Rights

24. Melanie Green s Recovery Case Study
According to the introduction of LeCory and Hoschuh (2012), there are eight core
themes that emerge in first person accounts on their road to recovery, some of
these themes coincide with the personal accounts of the women who were coping
with their BPD. The themes of recovery that are most prominent in these cases are
the reawakening of hope after despair, finding a purpose and actively participating
in life, while also moving past viewing themselves as their psychiatric disorder.
Once again, the theme of the journey to recovery is complex and nonlinear is
explored, as well as the theme of recovery is not accomplished alone, but with
support and partnerships in one s life. (LeCroy Hoschuh, 2012). The theme of

found her a medication regimen that helped her to manage her symptoms and
allowed her to function. Having someone who understands BPD beyond its stigma
shows to be very beneficial to the recovery process, especially in seeking help,
Green also mentioned she found another woman who was going through the
feelings she was experiencing, they helped each other in crisis and were there for

mentions the significant role her family played in her recovery, how her mother

Bible 2nd Assessment
Martin Luther Martin Luther, a Christian theologian and Augustinian monk has
taught and inspired the Protestant Reformation. His translation of the Bible has
helped to develop the correct version of the German language. Martin Luther was a
great man. Martin Luther was born on the 10th of November, 1483 in Eisleben,
Germany. Hans and Margaretha Luder were his parents. In 1501, he had been
enrolled in the University of Erfurt at the age of seventeen. But all of that changed
during a harsh thunderstorm where a lightning bolt struck near him on his way
back to school. With terror he yelled these words, Help St. Anne! I ll become a
monk! Since then, he dropped out of law school and started attending monastery
there. He would devote himself only to things like fasts, long hour prayers, and
constant confessions. He tried a lot to change this, but the more he tried to do this
for God, it always seemed that he became more aware of his sinfulness. Martin
Luther eventually ended up being good with God personally when his teacher,
Johann von Staupitz, ordered that Luther needed more work to distract him from all
his thoughts. So then Luther was ordained to the priesthood. So in the year of 1508,
Martin Luther started to teach theology at the University of Wittenberg. The difficult
time of study for academic degrees and preparation for the hard lectures drove Martin
Luther to study the Scriptures very deep. Luther engaged
26. Vietnam And The Vietnam War
There are two sides to everything. The Vietnam War changed a lot of people all
around the world. The Vietnam War was between North Vietnam and South Vietnam.
The Vietnam War was a very bloody and violent war. The war was a long and costly
armed conflict. This war changed Vietnam and its citizens forever.
During the Vietnam War, North Vietnam and South Vietnamboth had received help
from other countries. South Vietnam worked with the United States, South Korea,
Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand. North Vietnam worked with the Soviet Union
and China. The Vietnam War started in 1954 and ended in 1975. The Vietnam War
started because the North Vietnamese government and the Viet Cong were fighting to
reunify Vietnam under communist rule. The war was considered a colonial war. In
this war, South Vietnam wanted communist rule to stop but North Vietnam wanted
there to be communist rule. North Vietnam controlled South Vietnam for many years.
North Vietnam drained their resources, they demanded that South Vietnam did most
of the fighting, and pay most of the expenses. South Vietnam was more interested in
political games but their political leadership and military leadership were both
corrupt. In 1955, American President Dwight D. Eisenhower had pledged his support
to Ngo Dinh Diem (South Vietnam s leader) and South Vietnam. With training and
equipment from American military and police, Diem s security forces cracked down
on Viet Minh s supporters. By 1957, the Vietnamese

My friends, circumstances render it impossible that you can flourish in the midst of a
civilized community. You have but one remedy within your reach...that is to [move]
to the west...The sooner you do this, the sooner you will commence your career of
improvement and prosperity. These were the words spoken by Andrew Jacksonto
Congress on the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The Indian Removal Act (aka the Trail
of Tears) was a brutal, unfair tragedy that should not have happened to the Native
Americans. The way the Native Americans were forced out their homeland was the
wrong way for Andrew Jackson to gain land. Before Europeans arrived in America
there were about one to two million Indians. Then, by the 1800 s there were about
two hundred and fifty thousand Native Americans left. Ten percent of the
population died from torture, violence, slavery, and relocation. The first recorded
contact with the Europeans that the Choctaw Tribe encountered was Hernando De
Soto s Expedition in the 1540 s. Hernando was supposed to conquer Florida but
failed terribly. As De Soto s brutalities became known, the Choctaw Tribe greeted
him and his army with a great celebration and later attacked them. The Choctaw
Tribe gave De Soto and his troops about six hundred and forty four arrow wounds
wherever armor didn t protect them. The Chickasaws later trapped De Soto and his
army in a fire so hot that the Spaniards had to build up a forge and fix the steel in
their swords. Europeans had more
28. Comparing The Birth Stories In The Gospels Of Matthew
And...
Compare and contrast the birth stories in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. How do
the differences set up distinct theological emphases in each Gospel?
The foundation of the Christian faith is cradled within truth of the virgin birth, life,
and resurrection of Jesus Christ. As diverse as the world wide Christian culture is,
the truth in the birth and life of Jesus stands without border and language
limitations. Just as each individual life story can be adapted to be relevant for a
variety of audiences, the birth story of the Messiah was also. The Gospels of
Matthew and Luke are an example of the well rounded and diverse narration of the
birth story of Jesus Matthew s narration spoke to the history of the Jewish people and
Luke presented to the citizen of Rome.
In the Gospel of Matthew, the focus on the Jewish genealogy of Jesus played a
significant role in the birth story. To fully understand Jesus, it was imperative to first
acknowledge who Jesus was within Jewish ancestry and his subsequent position as
King of the Jews. Jewish tradition passed down the oral and written story of
Messianic prophecies for generations. To provide the correlation between the
anticipated Messiah and the fulfillment through Jesus, Matthew affirmed prophecies
throughout the birth story with two significant fulfillments Abraham s promised seed
[offspring] and the virgin birth.
Matthew, a man of Jewish descent, connects a direct ancestral line from Jesus to the
patriarch of the Hebrew
29. The Mother Archetype Of James Joyce s Dubliners
The Mother Archetype in James Joyce s Dubliners
An archetype is an instantly recognizable, fundamental theme, character, or symbol.
According to Carl Jung, archetypes are part of the collective unconscious, an
inherent, species wide knowledge base that is embedded in our natural and cultural
identity (Boeree, Webspace). One example of a Jungian archetype is the mother. In
the stories The Boarding House and A Mother from Dubliners, James Joyce explores
the two aspects of the mother archetype and how they manifest themselves in the
ways Mrs. Mooney and Mrs. Kearney protect and control their daughters.
The mother archetype comprises two potential manifestations. Jung describes the
loving and the terrible mother:

She was a big imposing woman who dealt with moral problems as a cleaver deals
with meat (47, 49). Her manipulativeness would seem to condemn her as a terrible
mother who merely wishes to foist her daughter onto some poor, unsuspecting sap.
She thought of some mothers she knew who could not get their daughters off their
hands (50). However there is evidence that Mrs. Mooney does truly care for her
daughter and wants the best for her. Some mothers would be content to patch up
such an affair for a sum of money; she had known cases of it. But she would not do
so. For her, only one reparation could make up for the loss of her daughter s
honour: marriage. She is balanced between the loving and terrible mother,
simultaneously embodying both aspects of the archetype. To begin with she had all
the weight of social opinion on her side: she was an outraged mother (Joyce 50).
Mrs. Mooney is able to maintain the moral high ground and secure society s approval
despite her questionable conduct because she is fulfilling her archetypal role.
In contrast, Mrs. Kearney is unable to achieve the archetypal balance, and fails in
her maternal role. The title of the story is ironic, because Mrs. Kearney fails as a
mother. She starts off well, trying to take advantage of the Irish Revival to benefit her
daughter.
When the Irish Revival began to be appreciable Mrs. Kearney determined to take
advantage of her daughter s name
30. Merger Of Toronto Pros And Cons
On January 1, 1988, a new Toronto come into being because and the new
government is formed due to the merger of the six districts and the merger of
municipal governments. Toronto is major economic center and financial pivot of
Canada. The merger of six municipalities and one borough led to a broader land, but
it also brought a series of problems ranging from financial and community service.
So the merge cannot result in saving cost and improving service efficiency. The
policy can be gaining income by levying on real estate, and at the same time
establishing a wide range of taxsystems, or instituting regional government in Greater
Toronto.

The ability to raise revenue of Toronto is governed by Ontario s municipal law, and
provincial and federal municipalities are reluctant to provide additional financial
assistance. However, most of the 38 big cities in the U.S. have the legal right to use
sales taxes and income taxes of city hall, and are greatly assisted by the state and
federal governments. Capital expenditures in Greater Toronto mainly include the
construction of public facilities, environmental maintenance and the service capital
assets required for enterprises and individuals. More importantly, more infrastructure
should be provided and maintained for more people in this new city. In 2004, the
government received more funding from the provincial government to try to meet its
infrastructure needs, which, however, causes a substantial increase in capital budgets
to meet the infrastructure of public facilities. The largest capital expenditures are
generally used for sewer, waterway, and highways. Transportation costs have risen
sharply since 1988 due to the increasing of capital and operating costs of
municipalities. However, the infrastructure of the city needs constant maintenance
and replacement, resulting in a negative cycle of funding. The household fire
expenditures in Toronto are much higher than those in other cities with low density
population, so the program increasing demand is not limited to specialized services
such as fire fighting, garbage disposal and public health

Guelphs and Ghibellines were introduced in italy about 1242 in Florence. The names
seem to have been grafted onto pre existing papal and imperial factions within the
city republics(Dante Alighieri Society of Massachusetts: Guelphs and Ghibellines).
Also a dubious tradition relates that the terms Guelf and Ghibelline originated as
battle cries ( Hie Welf Hie Waiblingen ) during conrad 3 s defeat of Welf VI of
Bavaria in 1140 at the siege of Weinsberg(1). The Ghibellines wanted a strong
monarchy and imperial rule over Italy. The Guelfs advocated the independence of the
Italian cities. The struggle began in the 12th century. After the Hohenstaufen
(Ghibellines) emperors fell in 1254, the conflict turned into petty quarrels(Britannica).
The way each rival got their names is fascinating. Guelf was derived from Welf, the
name of the dynasty of German dukes of Bavaria who competed for imperial throne
through the 12th and early 12th centuries(Guelf and Ghibelline). The name
Ghibelline was derived from Waiblingen, the name of a castle of the welfs opponents,
the Hohenstaufen dukes of swabia(Guelf and Ghibelline). Both the Guelf and the
Ghibellines were sympathetic to certain people who helped them or controlled them.
The Guelphs early became associated with the papacy because of their mutual
Hohenstaufen enemy. They were represented by more democratic middle classes and
merchant class who desired a constitutional government. They represented an
indigenous Italian stock and looked to the pope for help against the Ghibellines.
However this became more and more blurred(Dante Alighieri Society of
Massachusetts: Guelphs and Ghibellines). The Ghibellines who were sympathetic to
the German (Holy Roman) emperors, contributed to chronic strife within the cities of
northern Italy in the 13th and 14th

34. What Do Race And Ethnicity, Social Class And
Commercialism...
To what extent do race ethnicity, social class and commercialism influence
participation in sport, and in what ways?
Intro
Anglo Saxon culture is in many ways obsessed with sport and, from the late
eighteenth through to the nineteenth centuries, produced many of the formalized
sports now adopted world wide and played according to the standard rules (Holt,
1989). In the last century following a brief period of participation, black sportsmen
were barred participating alongside whites e.g. Baseball in the early 1860s which
led to black players resorting to create their own teams and leagues. Black
sportsmen have since World War II made a remarkable impact in baseball,
basketball, athletics, American football and boxing but not so much in golf and
tennis (Coakley 1978, Edwards, 1973). A reason being that according to the 2012
U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey the poverty rate for African
Americans is 28% compared to 15% for all races which shows some races are more
inclined to be part of a certain social class. Certain sports tend to be linked with
middle and upper classes lifestyle both in their recruitment and their supporters.
Class and Race/Ethnic Minorities
There is an indissoluble link between social class, ethnicity and sports. Football in
Britain and Brazil, baseball and basketball in America are among sports which
continue to recruit players almost exclusively from the blue collar sector of the
population. Working class men view a career in professional

similes, and symbols. The abortion is never explicitly mentioned, but instead
Hemingway leaves the reader to conclude what this simple operation really is (213).
With no decisive decision on the termination of the pregnancy revealed at the
conclusion of the story, the reader is left to conjecture what decision, if any, Jig
settled upon. Many critics are resolute in their reasoning that Jig would have the
abortion performed, but a smaller population believes Jig decided to forgo the
procedure. Through examination of the history of abortion as well as Hemingway
s personal history, his sympathy and respect towards women in Hills Like White
Elephants and other writings, and textual analysis of symbols and word choice, it
is evident that Jig resolves not to have the abortion. Abortion has been long been a
subject of legal and moral controversy. Today, abortion is legal in 75% on the
world and no less controversial ( Abortion Laws Worldwide ). In 1927, however,
when Hills Like White Elephants was published, abortion was much more restricted.
In the United States nearly every state had antiabortion laws by 1910 (Doan 51).

40. How Did Martin Luther Influence The World
In 1483, Martin Luther was born in Saxony, Germany, it was a place far from the
intellectual and cultural influence. However, Martin was a lawyer and he was
aware of the failure of Europe s religions, like the Catholic system of earning
salvation. Martin was afraid of God and this gave him no peace. One day, as he was
walking home, it started to rain tremendously and he prayed to Godto keep him safe.
He prayed if He kept him safe that he would become a monk and quit law school to
study the gospels. He Eventually made it safe and he was fearful of God so he later
quit law school and started to study and became a monk. Martin was always
confessing to the priest at church because he wanted peace in his heart. But this made
him feel empty inside,
41. M. C. Escher Tessellation
Tessellations are some of the most intriguing and thought provoking creations ever
done by artists. A tessellation by definition is when a plane is covered by repeated
congruent shapes. The distinguishing property of a tessellation is that all the shapes
are similar and there are no gaps or overlaps in the pattern. Tessellations have
occurred in nature since the dawn of time. Tessellations can be found in large patterns
such as skin cells or scales on a fish or in small tight patterns such as rectangular plant
cells. Tessellations were introduced into artistic creations during the late 19th and
early 20th century by acclaimed artist M.C. Escher. After they were introduced
artistically they were introduced into production and manufacturing... Show more

Escher was a visionary at the very least. Born in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands in
1898 he was pressured to get into architecture when he was young. After finishing
high school he went on to study at the Haarlem School for Architect and
Decorative Arts. There he developed a taste for interesting patterns and started to
create his own. M.C. Escher also made large contributions to the areas of math, art
and design. Escher had a special talent for creating visually interesting paintings
and works of art. He did this by applying math and developing them around
concepts such as transformation or a physically impossibly construction. He
traveled to Italy where he gained further inspiration for his art and then met his
wife and married her there. Italian architecture was the central focus of many of his
pieces during the early 20th century. Mr. Escher has many famous pieces of art to
his name; I will name and describe a few. A woodcut I actually remember seeing
when I was younger was actually one of his creations. Created in 1938 Sky and
Water was an image where you saw birds in the sky and fish in the water. The
interesting part of this image was that the gap between the fish was shaped like the
bird and the gap between the birds was shaped like the fish. All he did after that
was draw in detail to the ones that were supposed to be birds and the ones that were
supposed to be
42. The Israel Palestine Conflict Essay
Dating back to the beginning of the 20th century, Israel s and Palestine s relationship
took a turn, causing wars to break out and many unnecessary deaths to occur. Since
then, things have changed greatly, and I don t believe the conflict between them can
currently be solved. The friction between these two countries and religions is still
increasing, and so is the hostility that s contained by the Palestinian people. Israelhas
committed many human rights violations, including killings, beatings, torture, and
shootings at unarmed civilians; this includes children. Palestinians have no state or
army, but only weapons such as bombs, knives, rocks, and many youths who are
willing to die by using them against the Israeli troops.

These two groups have lived together for thousands of years, and things started
heating up during the 20th and 21st centuries. According to the Bible and Quran, a
sacred text of Islam, these two groups are actually close family members ; they are
descendants of Abraham s children Isaac and Ishmael. Because of this, there is a
belief that these two groups of people were usually peaceful with each other prior to
the 20th century. The start of the conflict was due to many unsolved issues after the
First World War. One of these unsolved issues was immigration of thousands of
Jewish people to the British Mandate Palestine known as the Zionist Project (1920
1930). This caused unrest in the Arab community. In 1937, a Royal Commission
from Britain suggested that the land be divided up into a Jewish state and an Arab
one. Both Palestinians and Arabs rejected this and wanted an end the the
immigration. Opposing violence continued until 1938 when reinforcements from the
UK stepped in to end it. Then around 1948 was when it became a conflict between
Israel and the Palestinian Arab people. In 1956, there was an Israeli attack on Egypt,
in collaboration with France and Britain. Then around 1967 was when the Arab
Israeli War started. This was when Israel launched an air attack on Egypt, Jordan, and
Syria in response to the request by the Egyptian President, Nasser, that the UN
withdraw its forces from the Egyptian territory and the buildup of Arab armies along
43. Examples Of Alternative World By Emily Dickinson
Alternative worlds. Dickinson is a magician of the ordinary, her (feminine) ecriture

Emily Dickinson was American poet born on December 10 , 1830 in Amherst,
Massachusetts. Her father was Edward Dickinson , a successful lawyer and civic
leader and her mother, Emily Narcross who came from a prominent family.
Emily Dickinson s childhood was happy, she had warm relationships with her older
brother, Austin and her younger sister, Lavinia. She studied at the AmherstAcademy
and a year at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. She grew to be an independent
woman, she refused to join family and friends who professed their faith as part of
the series of religious revivals known as the Second Great Awakening, which peaked
in Amherst c. 1850. As the 1850s advanced, Dickinson became increasingly

John Crowe Ransom in an essay called Emily Dickinson: A Poet Restored, makes a
difference between Emily Dickinson s daily life as a little home keeping person ,
who doesn t find her place around other people, and the explosive and confident
person we encounter in so many of her poems. She has adopted what William Butler
Yeats called the poet s mask: the personality which was antithetical to her natural
character and identical with her desire (Martin Wendy p. 97).
From my point of view Emily Dickinson is a magician of the ordinary because her
poetry seems to make the worlds it describes, by extending our horizon regarding the
ways we can see this world. Many of DickinsonВґs poems discuss female identity in
relation to males and her own identity in accordance to religion, nature, life and love
as her desire to defy the social and gender conventions of her
44. Go Away Big Green Monster Literary Techniques
Controlling one s fears is an important thing to know how to do, which is why it s
important to start teaching children at a young age. Though there are many ways
to do this, instilling the lesson into something that they enjoy, such as reading
picture books, is a pretty good place to start. In the children s book Go Away, Big
Green Monster, author Ed Emberley successfully uses ugly adjectives, multiple
pictures, and a few forceful words in order to convince the children reading the
book that they can take charge of their fears in almost any situation as long as they
face them first. As each page progresses, the author adds another feature to the
monster. This is to make it seem like the monsters power is just being built up. If the
author would have just described all of the features of the monster in one page, no
suspense would have been created in the minds of the children, and they wouldn t
have been as interested in turning to the next page, because their fearhad already been
revealed. Emberley used the technique of using more pictures than words in order to
break down the fear at a constant rate rather than all at once, and once the full
monster was revealed and the next page began taking away features, the child was
able to realize that the power laid in their hands,... Show more content on

Breaking it down, by showing the full monster at the beginning, the author proves
that more than not, ones fears are right in front of them. Through the use of ugly
adjectives, the author emphasizes that almost everything on the monster is large in
some way, from his big round head to his long blue nose. This is just one of the
many ways that this author tries to persuade the children to face their fears, because
no matter how big or scary a fear may be, nothing is impossible to

The Role of Adult Basic and Literacy Education
With the passage of the 1988 Family Support Act (FSA), adult basic and literacy
education was linked to welfare reform. Based on experimentation with welfare
reform during the previous decade, the FSA created the Job Opportunities and
Basic Skills Training Program (JOBS). JOBS, which requires states to make
educational services available to welfare recipients, was created in response to the
general consensus that welfare recipients are not well prepared to enter the work force
(Cohen et al. 1994). One of its major underlying assumptions is that a strong
foundation of literacy and basic skills is critical to the successful transition to
employment and self sufficiency for AFDC ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Some of this research is based on experiments with welfare to work programs
leading up to the FSA (e.g., California s Greater Avenues for Independence [GAIN]
program), but much of it deals directly with the experiences of providing adult basic
and literacy education to JOBS participants. This Practice Application Briefreviews
some of these research findings and describes their implications for practice.
What Does the Research Say?
Evaluation studies of employment and training programs, including the
Comprehensive Employment and Training Act (CETA), the Job Training
Partnership Act (JTPA), and JOBS, are one body of research that can inform
practice. This research has been conducted over the past 20 years primarily on
demonstration programs designed to improve the basic skills and employability of
disadvantaged adults. A synthesis (Cohen et al. 1994) of this research resulted in the
following conclusions that have a bearing on the role of adult basic and literacy
education in welfare to work programs:
Because they use traditional pedagogical approaches for which many adults have
little tolerance, adult basic and literacy education programs have experienced
difficulty attracting and retaining participants. Furthermore, many low skilled adults
see no connection between this traditional approach and their primary goal of getting a

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World s End Evaluation Swashbuckling action and
fierce battle scenes are abundant in the third Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Pirates
of the Caribbean: At World s End is an action adventure film that follows the story of
Captain Jack Sparrow, William Turner, and Elizabeth in their adventures on the
Caribbean Sea. It is the third film in the series and concludes the Davy Jonesand East
India Trading Company story arc. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World s End is the
best movie in the franchise because it fleshes out existing characters while staying
true to their original characterization, has an interesting and cohesive narrative, and
makes excellent use of special effects. The film believably adds to the motivations
and actions of the characters. For instance, in the first two films Captain Jack
Sparrow struggles with whether to do what is right or to do what he wants. In the
first movie, he saves Elizabeth from drowning, but then threatens her in an escape
attempt. In the second film, he is willing to send one hundred people to Davy
Jones to save himself from having to serve aboard Jones ship. In this film, he has
the opportunity to become the immortal captain of the Flying Dutchman. Jack
Sparrow loves the sea and the freedom it gives him, but he gives up this chance to
allow Will Turner to live. He chooses to do the right thing at the end of this film,
showing that he is deep down a good man, albeit with many vices. Elizabeth also

maintained control of her. I had Hanniah stand up and was going to escort her out of

at least have a good public relations team. However, based off Target s website, they
do have a positive relationship with their shareholders because they have put so
much information out in the world on why they have the shareholders that they
do. The reason why Target is so public about their business is because of how their
organizational culture is handled. The company s culture makes for a great place
to work and their shareholders are a major part of that. As America s second largest
retailer, we stay ahead in today s ultra competitive retail market by challenging
ourselves to become more efficient and more intelligent, providing guests with the
best shopping experience possible. The pace is fast, the atmosphere is fun and the
people are friendly. Every team member is encouraged to innovate, contribute ideas
and discover solutions as an important part of a world class team. This also plays a
part in Target s diverse team and the emphasis they have on having diversity in their
company. Target has specific areas with their shareholders that are just for diversity
and the power that they have within them has helped the company out tramendously.

50. Medicine And Its Impact On Medical Education
Through out the centuries, medicine has changed vastly in many different categories.
Two exponential categories being American medical education and facilities, which
have been impacted by a number of sources, positively and negatively. During the
American Colonial Era, medicine was taught through apprenticeships. This learning
technique was added on to when the hospitaland medical school were created. Ben
Franklin and Thomas Bond made a positive impact on medical facilities in 1752,
when they opened the first ongoing hospital, the Pennsylvania Hospital, in
Philadelphia. Then, William Shippen an John Morgan created the first medical
school in the United States, the College of Philadelphia. However, there were very

Proprietary schools had no oversight or university connections and many physicians
wanted to open their own so they could have medical distinction. Along with this,
the medical reformers were having no success in medical education. The University
of Georgia even put in requirements, but when students started to leave they had to
go back to their previous standards. After the Civil War, many changes came about.
Voluntary non profit hospitals started to have a rough time due to many having a
fear of hospitalism, or a fear of getting an infection from other patients. This stigma
was backed by the harsh criticism of many writers. Medical education was hindered
as well, though its problems came from diploma mills. Dr. John Buchanan was one
of these figures who gave out bogus diplomas, and 10% of physicians admitted to
buying their degree. These factors strongly effected medicine. On the other hand,
positive factors were emerging in medicine. Charles Elliot became president at
Harvard in 1871. He wanted major reform, and he put in a three year program with
core work that benefited the quality of the education being given. Also beginning
physicians could now get excellent clinical experience at dispensaries. They had
previously been funded by wealthy philanthropists, but after the Civil War, medical
schools, hospitals, and emerging public health movements funded them. These

The setting of the story itself is beyond the minds of normal people in 1944, and
when the audience was exposed to it, the definition of sci fi was reshaped. It began
with the colonization of humans on the planet of Jupiter, the largest planet, with
great atmosphere pressure. Humans live inside a Dome, and can not explore
beyond it, except if they turn themselves into another alien form. Many brave men
have transformed themselves and walked out the dome, only to disappear and
never return. Fowler, the head leader of the Dome has had enough, and decided to
send himself and his puppy out. The story is considered a science fiction because of
its imaginative concept of futuristic, space exploration and extraterrestrial life. On
top of this, the story navigates through another planet, where humanity must adapt to
the environment or die trying. The main theme in this story is persistence, never
giving up no matter the circumstances or the difficulties. This is demonstrated
throughout the whole story, for example, Stanley, the scientist said, You re going
to keep on sentencing them to death, she said. You re going to keep marching them
out face to face with Jupiter. You re going to sit in here safe and comfortable and
send them out to die. This shows that lives after lives are being lost, but Fowler
will never give up in find the answer. He said, If a few men die, but we finally
succeed, the price is small. Through the ages men have thrown away their lives on
foolish things, for foolish reasons. Why should we hesitate, then, at a little death in a
thing as great as this? This demonstrates his hunger to finding the solution, the
solution that will enable humanity to explore beyond inside the Dome. Fowler and
his men are willing to continue sacrificing themselves because they know the price is
worth it for the great evolution of mankind. The theme of the story,

With the seemingly rising numbers in juveniles with drug problems there is a need

help before it is too late. Drugs are not the only thing that can send a juvenile to court,
alcohol charges can as well. Another important aspect is to ensure that these teens
stay clean. If they don t they can end up with detention sentences, home incarceration,
or possibly moved into the adult court system. Using one example of how drug courts
work is from King County, Washington. Superior Court JudgeLaura Inveen is over

have been either charged with a drug or alcohol offense, or they are accused of

charged with violent or sex related offenses are excluded. Participating teenagers must
