Respiration includes four main processes: pulmonary ventilation where air moves in and out of the lungs, external respiration which is the gas exchange between blood in the lungs and air, transport of gases between the lungs and body tissues via the cardiovascular system, and internal respiration where gases are exchanged between blood and cells. Oxygen is used by cells for energy production while carbon dioxide is produced as a waste. The respiratory system includes the conducting zone which carries air to the respiratory zone in the lungs where gas exchange occurs in alveoli via a thin membrane with surrounding capillaries.
