The document discusses research done on existing documentaries to inform the group's own social media documentary. It describes how Super Size Me effectively used a signature tune and captioning during interviews. It also discusses taking inspiration from a healthy eating documentary's opening montage. The group learned they should avoid overly dramatic music and aim for a serious, professional tone. Branded influenced the choice to have an off-screen presenter and use animations to display data. The conclusion lists common techniques the group plans to employ, such as split screens, animations, sped-up footage, and vox pops.
2. SUPER SIZE ME
Whilst researching into different documentaries we were massively
influenced in terms of what connotations we would try to replicate
through our documentary. For example, when watching super size me
we noticed that the same tune was constantly being played
throughout the film. This enabled a familiar theme tune to be created
which appeared effective as it almost made a signature tune for the
documentary. Therefore we were influenced due to this and will try to
find a catchy tune similar in order to replicate this effect through our
social media documentary. Furthermore, many captions and titles
were used whilst individuals were being interviewed. This displayed a
very professional approach of which we all found very appealing. Due
to this we will ensure we use captions and titles when presenting our
interviews. In addition, in super size me they edited the captions so
that they would fade away near to the end of the interview clip. This
was also extremely effective as it tied the interview up and hinted an
ending to the audience therefore we we also include this connotation
within our documentary.
3. HEALTHY EATING
We also watched a healthy eating documentary which we felt we learnt a lot
from. This is because, initially they included a montage for their introduction
which appeared very effective and appealing. Due to the fact it was used
during the opening sequence allowed us as the audience to be intrigued and
excited to see the rest. Therefore we will try to replicate this in order to
capture the audience attentions straight away.
On the other hand, their choice of music was quite ineffective as it was overly
dramatic and too intense. Therefore it didn’t connote to the healthy eating
topic and inhibited the documentary overall as it appeared unprofessional.
As a result of this we will ensure that we choose a selection of music and
theme tunes that are compatible and effective with regards to our choice of
topic. For example, our subject matter regards social media therefore we will
avoid over dramatic and intense music as it is not a dangerous, sinister and
overly serious issue within society. Moreover, when presenting our
documentary I do feel we bialy put a negative spin on social media as we talk
about it being ‘addictive’, therefore we will also avoid positive and happy
4. BRANDED
Branded was a further documentary that we studied. This particular
documentary influenced us because it gave us an insight on the
presenting. In the sense that it influenced a discussion upon our
group regrading the choice of presenter as Branded had two on
screen presenters which gave off a very comedic approach. However,
we wanted to side away from this as we are looking for a serious and
professional outcome from our documentary. Therefore from this we
learnt that it was a more suitable choice to have a off-screen
presenter and just use voiceover. However, Branded used animations
to help display their statistical data. We all found this very effective
and appealing and therefore decided that we would try to replicate
this probably through the programme Powtoon.
5. CONCLUSION
Overall from watching different documentary's and studying them we
managed to gage a lot of new ideas of which were mainly influenced through
the observing of other projects. Our common ideas are the following:
Split screen for opposing opinions
Animations - to show statistics
Speed up background footage
Vox Pops
Only film the expert when interviewing – also don’t have direct address.
Off-screen presenter
Suitable background music
Montage
