After we had finished our production one of the last few stages was to review our audience feedback. We got a group of people within our target audience between the ages of 13 and 25, who watched our documentary and gave us feedback on it.
FIGURE 3The first question we asked was ‘in what ways does the documentary reflect generic conventions?’ We decided to ask this question as we wanted to know whether we had followed the documentary of a real media product (documentary).
FIGURE 2
In response to the feedback we learnt that the use of our cutaways shown in figure 2 and editing transitions was a success as it held relevance to the subject about young people and contraception and it also kept the documentary interested. Another member of the audience pointed out that the use of the production logo always being in the frame allowed our documentary to look professional as it was something you would see in documentaries on ‘BBC news night and ‘Channel 4’. I was particularly pleased with the feedback about the cutaways as we put a lot of thinking into it and was hoping the audience will be able to relate and observe the relevance as to why it was shown.
Another question we asked was ‘which idea throughout the documentary do you like and why?’ From this question we received feedback such as the interviews were very informative and easy to understand. I feel this was quite true as we tried to use ideas were the interviewee could demonstrate what h/she was talking about like shown in figure 4.
FIGURE 4
We also asked the audience ‘what were the strengths of our documentary?’ in which they answered the framing and voiceover. The framing of our documentary allowed them to see what was going on in the background but without drawing to much attention away from the interview itself. Also they said the voiceover was very clear and easy to understand. Also the use of a female voice made it sound more calming and inviting. They also commented on the weaknesses of our documentary, which was the phone interview, they felt the effects added to it was weak and was not very enjoyable to watch. This was a shame as we thought by adding a phone interview would be different and creative. However we took that into consideration and hopefully next time around we will be able to correct that.
FIGURE 6
Taking into consideration all the feedback we collected I feel that our documentary was quite successful as our target audience was able to relate and base different opinions about our documentary, which we aimed for, however there were a few criticism that we received and have noted it down for next time.
