What have you learnt
from your audience
feedback
My audience
My target audience was local audiences, males and females aged 15 –
30; which is because this is the age range which would most relate to
my characters and their story line, for example moving into a new
house. Therefore they will be more indulged into the film.
An example of my target audience ‘Gary is a 22 year old who has just
graduated university with an philosophy degree, he is now looking to
rent a flat in London with his mates from university. He loves playing
cricket, and frequently shops at river island’
How I received my feedback
The first set of feedback that I received is from my first screening of a draft of my
film. I received feedback here via a Q&A after the screening, as well as a asking the
audience to fill in a questionnaire after the screening.
Example of my questions:
 1 - Can you hear all the audio over the soundtrack? if not at what points can't you
hear the dialogue?
 2 - Did the story line make sense?
 3 - What shots should I add when doing my reshoot
 4 - What could I add to the final scene when Julian is being tortured?5 - Does the
music genre fit the theme of the film or should I change it?
 6 - At what point should I make the music more intense?
 7 - Was the colour grading appropriate for the film? if not what colour should I
make it more?
How I Received my feedback
For feedback about my ancillary tasks (Film poster
and magazine review). I asked my colleges in my
work place to criticize them on what’s different
between them and real life media text.
For my research and planning feedback I sat in on a
focus group and discussed ideas for mine and others
media products.
Effects on my research and
planning
The focus group helped me to brainstorm more ideas for my short film, as well as
taking onboard ideas from other people, such as specific shots I could do with my
genre to entice the narrative, for example shots from the bush showing my
characters being watched. I also did a poll to vote on what I should name my film,
the most popular name was ‘Obsessed’, I knew that this would be a reliable source
of feedback because it was a democratic vote from lots of different people.
This effected me on tasks such as my story
board for example, where I was able to put
the ideas from the focus group into context
and use them for my film. It also helped me
to understand which of my ideas weren’t as
good, and wouldn’t be as effective.
During production
During my filming the feedback from my peers helped me to
understand what other/alternative shots I could get in my reshoots
which would help to improve the narrative of my film. This was
made clear after the first screening of my film. Therefore when I did
my reshoots I knew exactly what shots I wanted and needed from
my audience feedback.
After the reshoot I then
did another screening
to ensure that I got the
shots that were
recommended in the
feedback.
During production
As for my Ancillary during production I would
constantly as others in the workplace what they
would change if they would change anything what
would it be.
For example the feedback to my first draft of a film
poster was that it looked more like a indie film rather
than a psychological thriller. Therefore I completely
scraped the idea of using my actor and putting a
camera in her eye, and decided to come up with a
new look to my film poster.
During production
The initial feedback to my magazine review was positive about the
layout, as I used the same ripped paper pattern which I used in my
film poster, a recurring theme. People also seemed to like the name
‘Film Tape’. Due to the positive feedback about the ripped paper I
decided to make it a recurring thing in my marketing campaign,
therefore my target audience would associate the ripped paper with
my short film.
However one key feedback that I
received from my draft is that the
white background was boring,
therefore I changed it to a light
purple, again so that it goes
together with my film poster.
Post production
The feedback on my exhibition was that due to my short
film being on YouTube it meant that it was very easily
accessible to everyone at all times which was a positive.
However some said it may have also of been helpful to
upload it onto Vimeo as well, therefore it might get
higher viewing figures because Vimeo is a website
dedicated to short film.
