Merchant s Tale
The Merchant s Tale Summary The merchant s tale from The Canterbury Tales may be one of
the more versatile tales, as the relationships the merchant holds is common throughout both life
and in literature. The tale opens with a prologue, and the merchant s open objection to marriage.
He voiced his anger and said that all married men are morose, and complains about his wife s
qualities. He also said, I have a wife, the worst possible; for though the devil were married to her
she would outdo him, I ll swear... She is a thorough shrew... How well off I d be if I were only
free again (Chaucer 224)! Here, the prologue ends and the rest of the story opens up. The story
explains that the merchant was a worthy and wealthy knight who lived in Lombardy. He had been
single for 60 years, and had always satisfied his physical desires for women... Show more content

However, he had decided one day that he wanted to marry, mainly to please God s wish that
every man and woman should marry. He also wanted to make sure that all of his estates and
money should go to his blood (preferably sons), rather than some strangers. The merchant goes
on, explaining what virtues he wanted his wife to have. He also expresses his pity towards the
men who are not married to a woman. The merchant, whose name is revealed to be January,
stresses the importance of marrying quickly, and that she must be younger than 20 years and
pure . January then asks his two brother s, Placebo and Justinus, thoughts about marriage.
Placebo is very agreeing to January s proposal. Justinus, however, is married and says that he is
miserable and is very against January marrying. January ignores Placebo s warning against
marriage, and begins to search for his new wife. He finds a suitable woman, named May, and he
arranges for them to marry as quickly as possible. The gods above were enthralled by January and

Analysis Of Free To Live
Free To Live should develop a young professionals board that focuses on volunteering and
fundraising, with advocacy and networking incorporated into any events that the Young
Professionals Board hosts or attends.
Key Insights
Our research indicates that most young professionals boards in the greater Oklahoma City area
engage in fundraising activities, as well as advocacy and networking, that work to further the
nonprofit s outreach and mission.
The majority of the young professionals boards that we interviewed had written documents that
specified the duties, responsibilities, and operational structure of the board.
The start up and creation phase for Free To Live s Young Professionals Board will be lengthy.

II.Benchmarking
Due to the variable and fluid nature of young professionals boards, the bulk of our research came
from interviewing nonprofits in the greater Oklahoma City area with young professionals boards.
When speaking with the nonprofits, the first thing we sought to determine was the main focuses
of the young professionals board. From our interviews, we found that 4 out of 6 of the young
professional boards interviewed assisted in fundraising in some capacity. The complete breakdown
of their focuses can be found in the table below. Specifically, Rebecca King from Oklahoma
Lawyers for Children stated that her young professionals board [does] a lot of brainstorming for
fundraisers and assesses how to gain resources from fundraising most effectively. After the planning
stage, the group also runs the event and coordinates the volunteer effort. Additionally, this model
was mentioned by Mary Ellen Evans Opstein of Emergency Infant Services and Country Thomas of
Infant Crisis Services.

Jean Luc Godard s Weekend as Didactic Self-Reflexive Cinema
James Goodman 5 March 2005 Auguiste Communication Essay Jean Luc Godard s Weekend as
Didactic Self Reflexive Cinema According to Stephen Prince in Movies and Meaning: an
Introduction to Film, Screen Reality is a concept that pertains to the principles of time, space,
character behavior and audiovisual design that filmmakers systematically organize in a given film
to create an ordered world on screen in which characters may act and in which a narrative may
unfold.(262) One mode of cinematic screen reality is self reflexivity. While the other three modes
of screen reality seek to sway the audience into accepting the authenticity of the world and the story

Weekend represents the culture of political violence and social experimentation, artistic and
sexual, which was the latter half of the 1960s. This somewhat comic but depressing film of
Godard s is a satirical poem and construct of the contempt with which he obviously holds
bourgeoisie society. Much of the film expresses this through the use of symbolism and
metaphor. In order to better facilitate the process whereby the audience becomes aware of
Godard s intentions and his message he introduces us to a young Parisian married couple.
Godard sets the clichГ©d couple, alienated and bourgeois, on a journey for Corinne s parents
country house, hoping to find them either dead or willing to sign the will. As they persist in
their journey we are given various opportunities to appreciate the absolute complacency and
ignorance of the couple (meant to be emblematic of all bourgeois). Godard tries to peel off the
hypocrisy of bourgeois society through the weekend trip of this Parisian middle class couple.
Weekend is a clear continuation of the style, and even ideology, which originated with Brecht s
work in the theater. Jean Luc Godard weaves didactic self reflexive techniques throughout the film,
in order to break the illusion that the spectator is watching a real, authentic world on screen rather
than a movie. In doing so, Godard finds the ability to share his discourse directly with the audience
instead of employing characters to do the job for

Essay about The Vietnam War s Effects on American Society
The Vietnam War s Effects on American Society
Abstract
The Vietnam War had a profound effect on American society.
It changed the way we viewed our government, the media, and our Constitutional rights. Because of
this shift in perspective, the country was torn apart and yet still came together in new and different
ways. The Vietnam War s contraversiality spurred a great many sources of protest, against our
government s use of power, how far we could stretch the rights of free expression, and primarily
against the violence of the war itself. These changes in the behavior of society have left a lasting
mark on our perception and the demand to be informed since that influencial period of social
turmoil.
The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was not just a war in Vietnam or in
America, but the war became a symbol (Gioglio, 20).
One of the most prevelant type of protests were based on the imparting of knowledge. These were
known as teach ins. The teach ins were really the first step in raising conciousness to the impact the
war could have(Fever, 11).
They were the first things to get people informed and involved. Starting with teach ins during the
spring of
1965, the massive antiwar efforts centered on the colleges, with the students playing leading roles.
These teach ins were mass public demonstrations, usually held in the spring and fall seasons. The
teach in movement was at first, a gentle approach to the antiwar activity (Gettleman, 54).
Teach ins were one important way to bring more people into the antiwar movement. During a teach
in, students, faculty
members, and guest speakers discussed issues concerning the
Vietnam war (McCormick, 37). The teach ins began at the
University of Michigan in March of 1965, and spread to other campuses, including Wisconsin in
April. These protests at some of America s most well known universities attracted the public eye.
The demonstrations were one form of attempting to go beyond mere words and research and
reason, and to put direct pressure on those who were conducting policy in apparent disdain for the
will expressed by the voters
(Spector, 30 31). Although

The Narmer Palette
For about 3000 years, there were conventions to Egyptian art. The way people, gods, and the
natural world were depicted was governed by these canons. There were styles and techniques that
could be found used in almost every painting from the Early Dynastic period to the New Kingdom,
and the Narmer Palette is one of the earliest works discovered that depicts these traditional
conventions of Egyptian art.
The Narmer Palette is a ceremonial object that was made between 3000 and 2920 BCE. It was
found ritually buried in a temple for the god Horus in Hierakonpolis, Egypt. Throughout this work
are many different examples of traditional Egyptian styles and techniques being used. Both sides of
the palette are divided into registers. The back of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is commonly believed that it shows the unification of Lower and Upper Egypt, as on one side
the King wears the crown of Lower Egypt and on the other, he wears the crown of Upper Egypt.
This is the earliest discovered example of the same king wearing both crowns. There is a dispute
over whether the scenes are supposed to depict an actual battle or battles that took place during the
unification or if it is ceremonial and represents the unification.
This work caught my attention because of how it depicts the conventions of Egyptian art. It is
interesting to compare this work of art to the works created during the Middle and the New
Kingdom and see the similarities in how hieratic scale is used to show importance, composite
poses, the combination of both art and language, and many others. The Narmer Palette is
seemingly the start to 3000 years of artistic style. Another thing that interests me about this work is
that it is a palette. A palette is not something considered special in modern times, yet back then it
must have had a more important meaning or been a more common everyday object for someone to
care to take the time to create this piece as a palette, rather than just a work of art.
The Narmer Palette is ancient work of art that demonstrates many of the conventions that were
found in Egyptian art for thousands of years after the creation of this

Gossip Girl Character Analysis
Today s society is all about the drama. Social media has played a huge influential factor in
allowing people to communicate with others, release news quickly, keep the population updated,
along with many other advantages. It has also become a place where people especially teens, talk
about romance in a cultural way. In one of my favorite TV shows, Gossip Girl, drama and cultural
romance is the key factor in all of the characters lives. There is an anonymous gossip girl who
posts online the drama pertaining to the city s most elite groups, which happens to be the main
characters who attend the same high school. For the purpose of this essay, the main characters to
be discussed are Serena Van der Woodsen
, Blair Waldorf, Chuck Bass, Nate Archibald, and Dan
Humphrey. Serena and Blair have been best friends since forever, and are very popular. At the
beginning of the show, Blair is dating Nate who is best friends with Chuck. These four are all
very popular not just in school, but their last names cause them to be very well known to the
public eye. Dan is an outsider who ends up getting looped into the drama. As the episodes and
seasons of the show progress, old relationships start to fade away while new relationships are
arising, and gossip girl does not miss a beat. It is a constant flow of romance between the
characters. One of the most iconic relationships is that between Chuck and Blair. Their relationship
is a roller coaster in itself. A very strong, undeniable attraction

When I was talking to the main SME from the budget office, he was unsure about most of the
contents on their SharePoint site. He would often make assumptions on some of the contents
without consulting with the owner of the page or who was in charge of that particular page. For
example, Person 1 told me that all the documents before 2013 on the budget office could be
archived; however, when I talked to person 2 (this page was his specialist), he told me that he
would like to still keep documents from 2005 because he is still using it for historical references.
This happened a couple of times with the budget office. In my opinion, there is a lack of
interaction and awareness of other people s job within the budget office. As for the SCM team, I
know that one of the SMEs was frustrated because someone with permission was able moved
their documents from one place to another. He would preferred if that person did not have
permission to their site so that it will not cause any confusion later on. For some people, they
believe that not everybody should have permissions to certain sites; this will only cause
discrepancy and confusion for the team. I think it is really beneficial if there was meeting to
reorganize permissions to certain sites as well as discussing the contents within each

Essay about The Central Part of Berkeley s Metaphysics
The Central Part of Berkeley s Metaphysics
The central part of Berkeley s metaphysics seems paradoxical or even absurd. Its claim is that
what we call solid, and indeed everything else that we find laid out in the three dimensional
physical word that is apparently around us, is only fictional. It appears to be there, but it does not
really have an independent existence. The physical world is, according to Berkeley, dependent on
and only perceived through a mental state. In Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous,
Berkeley tried to explain how a seemingly noncommonsensical theory can actually consist of
commonsensical characteristics. There are two contentions made by Berkeley in his attempt to
prove that commonsense is the basis ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Hence, none or these qualities exist outside the mind because we all see things differently. It is
impossible, therefore, that matter be something existing in itself, objective, inert, and devoid of
thought. According to Berkeley, when we say that a thing exists, we mean nothing more than
that such a thing is merely perceived by us. Berkeley stated, To be is to be perceived. Berkeley s
answer to the philosophical question, if there is no one in the forest when a tree falls, is there a
sound, would be no because the forest cannot exist without a perceiver. Primary or secondary
qualities, substances and impressions are nothing other than acts of perception, that is, mental
facts; and their existence signifies their being perceived as mental acts. If I walk into a room
containing a table, the table exists. However, when I leave the room, the table no longer exists.
The Paradoxical problem arises when one asks, how is it then that when I return to the room, the
table is still there? While denying the existence of a material world, Berkeley did not deny the
existence of the world of spirits/minds. He believed that from the very presence of ideas and
impressions, there had to existence finite spirits/minds, and because there had to be an origin of
these ideas/impression, there had to exist a finite spirit/mind. Finite spirits/minds refers to humans
and the Infinite Spirit/Mind refers to God. Now

Zen Buddhism Essay
Zen Buddhism was first introduced to China by a South
Indian man called Bodhidharma in around 520 CE. Bodhidharma, according to tradition, was a
man so epic that he removed his own eyelids in order to win a staring contest with a rock wall
(from his severed eyelids sprang tealeaves, and thus, the connection between Zen Buddhism and tea
drinking). The main teaching of Zen is that of zazen, or seated meditation, and that only through
meditation and action, rather than cogitation, can one achieve enlightenment (Elwood, 127 132).
There are two main sects of Zen Buddhism: Rinzai and Soto. Rinzai is the older of the two
schools, and was introduced to Japan by Eisai, a Tendai monk who traveled to China and was

If the new tenzo, or cook, makes a mistake...a senior monk will surely give him a tongue lashing
in front of everyone. The cook will be criticized if the rice is too hard, the soup is too salty, the
vegetables have been cut too small, the tea is lukewarm, the faucet is left dripping (Hori, 13 14).
Hori goes on to say that if Zen Buddhist masters taught rationally, rather than intuitively, a new
cook would be taken aside for a while in the weeks preceding his appointment and shown how to
cook properly. However, in not being taught the proper way to prepare meals, and through being
forced to constantly be mindful of his actions and the effects they will have on the reactions of his
fellow monks, Zen is effectively being practiced.
Another thing that Rinzai and Soto have in common is their effort to keep monastic life simple to
the point of being almost primitive. This includes the use of wood fires, non flushing toilets, no
running water, no heating or air conditioning, and often no electricity. (Hori, 14) By not allowing
the use of modern, time saving innovations, Zen Buddhist monks are forced to spend much more
time focused on simple, day to day activities, again improving the general state of awareness that
Zen Buddhism seems to be all about.
Along the same lines, monasteries have strict, often harsh, rules dictating many mundane aspects of
everyday life. As we saw in the movie,

Islamic Finance Within Compliance Of Sharia Law

Islamic finance within compliance of Sharia law form the core of Islamic banking and have
become one of the fastest growing segments of the financial industry, operating in over 75 countries

scholars to identify alternatives to the interest based system that is prohibited and condemned by
Allah within the Quran. Islamic finance also prohibits the practice of lending money for

create exposure to the real sector and must ensure efficient risk management (citation needed). The
second principle revolves around the profit and loss sharing concept, where any financial

third principle prohibits uncertainty and/or speculation. Uncertainty in contractual terms and

Islamic Finance Historical and Religious beginnings
Islamic finance took its roots at the beginning of the 7th century when the Prophet Muhammad
claimed to have received revelations directly from God (Allah). At the time of these revelations the
current standards/rules of financial operations were derived from the Quran and the Sunna,
however, since then there has been a continuing process of coordinated adjustment

Drown Dreams
Other Animals is a quartet led by German brothers Peter and Bernhard Meyer, guitarist and
bassist, respectively, who take all the credit for the twelve compositions of the band s debut
album. They are joined by the Berlin based saxophonist Wanja Slavin and the American drummer
Jim Black, a pivotal figure in the New York jazz scene. The animated beat that introduces Drown
Dreams , an oblique, dreamy, chamber pop song, doesn t dissemble some solemnity attached to its
melody and harmonic conduction. There are a few grey clouds encircling it, but also some sunrays
that make the liberation possible. Exclusively on this tune, Slavin plays synth and flutes. The
sluggish drum chops of Name of Cold Country , sparse yet well coordinated with the bass lines, go
along with the melodious saxophone and soaring electronic effects. The lightness of this
architecture of sound gains further depth with Peter s beautiful harmonics and warmly distorted
chords. Yes, it may feel ponderous and wintry, but comes stuffed with emotion.

Methods Of Aggressive Accounting By Issuing Financial...
Facts
Several companies have performed methods of aggressive accounting by issuing financial
statements to exaggerate their value. Either over inflating revenues, assets or cash flows, or
understating any debts and expenses are examples of this type of fraud. These accounting swindles
allow companies to have an efficient public appearance to investors and potential creditors.
Nevertheless, according to a recent journal article from (Chen Huang, 2013), these deceitful
activities led to abnormal stock returns and unfavorable open market purchases and repurchases.
The statements from the financial disclosures were so unclear, yet seemed too good to be true.
Consequently, a wide number of corporations received complaints from investors under the regards
of the published financial statements. Nonetheless, these inaccuracies, whether reported or
unreported, led corporations to go into debt with both creditors and investors.
One major instance of this occurrence is the Enron Bankruptcy. In the case of Enron Corporation,

What is the Marine Ecosystem?
Marine ecosystems are among the largest of Earth s aquatic ecosystems. It covers almost 70% of

Why is the Marine Ecosystem important?
Marine ecosystems are very important in to the overall health of both marine and terrestrial

composed entirely of garbage. This environmentalist s nightmare is at a staggering size twice the

In 1993 Howard Gardner unveiled his theories on multiple intelligences (MI) in his book Frames of

Healthcare is an important industry that is always needed. Like other industries, it has to start
somewhere. Organizations have to be planned, opened, and organized, healthcare providers ,
managers, and other employees need to be hired, and much more. One of the most important
employees within an organization is the compensation specialist. Compensation specialists
supervise and manage the employee compensation programs within an organization. Some of the
common responsibilities include: developing the organization s pay structure, managing and
improving all bonus or commissions, and preparing job descriptions (DeCenzo, Robbins, Verhulst,
2013). According to Samantha Smith, a compensation specialist for Rocky Mountain Sleep Clinic,
the process of determining an employee s salaryis rather long and time consuming. She says that
there are five steps she follows to develop the salaries within the organization. First she must
review her own pay practice to help determine the budget of the company. Once this is completed,
she must determine the definition and description of each job, which is later used to advertise the
position during the hiring process. A proper description of each position allows for the applicants
to understand what they are applying for. Employees also know what is expected of them after
reading the job description. It is also important to track the competition. Salaries will vary by
organization, position, and employee, but knowing where the

Example Of Nationalism Research Paper
The following essay talks about Nationalism. This essay will give reasons of nationalism behind
different community challenges and how it affects the country. The reason why I choose this
problem because I think that the idea of nationalism is one of the most important ideas in which are
the actions taken by the members of the nationwhen they are seeing in achieving self determination.
And it stands for the ideology which is based on the premise that the individual s loyalty and
devotion towards his/her nation which surpass other individual or group interests.
Nationalism is a modern movement. After it came it got ignored in political philosophy which got
noticed. And in last decade, it further led to issues in the international justice of terrorism, the clash
of civilisations. But still, all this are just the definition or meaning of nationalism. Actually, if we

The role of nationalism in India. The conditions of the minority groups are growing worst day by
day and the reason is many possible things. Some administrative people make our constitution
worst. The population of Muslim people is going down. It s true that in higher position there are
minority people but in the community and national identity they are very less. India is a very
composite country because it consists of a lot of languages, religions, customs, ways of living

which give a very bad outcome of the nation s state. And the basic issue of India is to build up a

The Purpose Of A Social Movement
Social movements play a huge role on determining what makes or breaks a society. The purpose
of a social movement is to strive together in achievement of a social goal. Social movements can
be identified in different locations of the world. The United States alone has been home to
thousands of social movement groups, being that this is the Land of the Free , the citizens will
gladly take advantage of that right. Social movements can advocate for anything but the more
common groups are usually inclined to advocate for religious freedom or even racial equality.

Hezbollah Essay
Abstract
Hezbollah (Arabic for Party of God ) is an umbrella organization of various radical Islamic Shi ite
groups and organizations which receives substantial financial and philosophical support from Iran.
Hezbollah s formation was a direct response to Israel s 1982 invasion of Lebanon designed to
eliminate the Palestinian Liberation Organization s base of operations. Hezbollah s stated objectives
include the establishment of a Shiite theocracy in Lebanon, the destruction of Israel, and the
elimination of Western influences from the Middle East.
The Hezbollah terrorist group can be described as a loosely coupled, highly adaptive networked

Organization of the Oppressed on Earth and the Revolutionary Justice Organization. Its main
goal is the establishment of an Islamic government across the Arab world that will liberate
Jerusalem and the entire area of the present day State of Israel.(jewishvirtuallibrary.org) The
group formed reportedly in the 1980 s and grew as a result of Lebanese and regional factors.
Hezbollah serves as a strategic tool for Iran and Syria while serving as an integral part of Lebanon

headquartered in Beirut, with ties in North and South America, Asia, Europe and Africa. It controls
the southern part of Lebanon where the concentration of Shi a is greatest. The political relationship

The House Of Mirth And The Yellow Wallpaper Analysis
The House of Mirth and The Yellow Wallpaper: Gender Politics in the 19th Century The life of a
lady in the 19th century is painted in a romantic light. Pictured in her parlor, the lady sips tea
from delicate china while writing letters with a white feathered quill. Her maid stands silently
off in the background, waiting for orders to serve her mistress. What is not typically pictured, is
the sadness or boredom echoed on the lady s face. Perhaps the letter is to a dear friend, not seen
in ages, pleading with the friend to visit, in hopes that the friend will fill the void in the lady s
life made from years spent in a loveless marriage; or possiblyk20 the lady isn t writing a letter at
all, but a novel or a poem, never to be read by anyone but her. Edith Warton and Charlotte Perkins
Gilman, are 19th Century ladies who dare to share their writing with the world. Through their
works, the darker side of a woman s life in the late 1800 s is exposed. Gender politics in the 19th
dictates that a lady is dependent on her husband for her financial security and social standing; that
is if she is fortunate enough to marry at all. In Edith Warton s The House of Mirth, Lily Bart is a
beautiful woman in her late 20 s, who fails to marry a wealthy man. The narrator in Charlotte

What Is The Availability And Patterns Of Nutrient Uptake...
The availability and patterns of nutrient uptake in biofilms differs from that of planktonic cells. The
bacterial cells in biofilms exchange nutrients and metabolites by means of water channels between
the micro colonies (Kokare et al., 2009). The microbes living deep within natural biofilms may
often receive low nutrition due to restricted rates of diffusion of nutrients through the biofilm
(Petroff et al., 2011). Biofilms are also known to provide a suitable environment for syntrophic
relationships between the two metabolically distinct bacteriafor the exchange of substrates/nutrients
(Kokare et al., 2009).
Genetic transfer. The bacteria in biofilms readily take part in gene transfer or exchange of extra
chromosomal DNA (Donlan, 2002). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Few hypotheses have emerged to explain the mechanism of antimicrobial resistance in biofilms. For
example, slow and incomplete penetration of biofilm, presence of resistant phenotype of some
bacteria, formation of persister cells and altered environment within biofilms antagonize antibiotic
action (Dufour et al., 2010; Stewart William Costerton, 2001)
Altered stress response. Bacteria in biofilms can express stress responsive genes in greater amount
and switch to forms that are more tolerant. The existence of common regulators, the presence of
extracellular polymeric substances, and biofilm heterogeneity are major factors by which biofilms
show tolerance against various stressors such as, starvation, heat or cold shock, cell density, pH,
and osmolarity (Dufour et al., 2010; Gambino Cappitelli, 2016).
Quorum sensing. Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell to cell communication mechanism, in which a
small diffusible signal molecule is produced, released, sensed and responded to, by bacterial cells
(and Bassler, 2001; Cvitkovitch, Li, Ellen, 2003; Li Tian, 2012; Waters Bassler, 2005). Different
QS signaling molecules and mechanisms have been explored in various bacterial genera over the
years (Irie Parsek, 2008). When the bacterial population reaches a threshold or quorum level, QS
signaling initiates and the auto inducers bind and trigger functions of target genes

Courtney, your discussion board post covered all of the questions thoroughly and accurately. The

(Cabrera Cabrera, 2002). In reference to your analysis of shared information, you correctly pointed
out how the structure, tasks, strategy, and culture of performance and learning organizations are
very different from one another. The performance organization is designed with a chain of
command or hierarchy (Daft, 2013). The vertical structure makes the organization more rigid or
inflexible than the loose or flexible culture found in a learning organization. According to Daft

The Emergency Room With Chest Pain
Related Case
Mrs. Smith signs in the emergency room with chest pain. Several nurses rush to get her vitals,
blood samples to send to the lab, and obtain an EKG. While performing an assessment on Mrs.
Smith, the nurse inquires about the amount of time she has been feeling this way. Mrs. Smith
replies My sister passed away 2 weeks ago and I have been having this chest pain ever since . After
the physician reviews over all of Mrs. Smith s lab and radiology test results, he informs her that she
is not having chest pain from a heart attack, it is simply the result of untreated anxiety.
Mrs. Smith is having pain due to emotional stresses in her life. She is experiencing real pain due to
sadness and profound grief. This is a case of acute pain resulting from an experience that is
expected in one s life. Her pain, without knowing essential factors, could have been misinterpreted
and difficult to manage without knowing the situation in its entirety.

The idea of man versus something in the world is not foreign to most. A lot of the time a person

man still tries their hardest to defy and go against nature. In Things Fall Apart, the people of

August 2016 Executive Summary The advent of globalisation in the last two decades had an
immense impact to the political and legal environments which are essential aspects in
international marketing. As there is no existing single political and legal environment because of
its complexity on a variety of levels, the political and legal environment will be referred to as one
concept in this paper. The political and legal aspects will be discussed in relation to the domestic
and international environment. In order to have a grasp of the factors at play, this paper will use
the Islamic law s enforcement of halal regulations as an example. This paper will highlight the
issues in the domestic environment such as social and environmental concerns, intellectual property
rights, and export and import controls. It will also show how the absence of a unified halal standard
in the international level magnifies the importance to be aware of domestic certification bodies and
unstable domestic laws and regulations. Review International Marketing and the Role of

appeared easier to create a secret trust than to amend the will, cases where the secret trust arose
as a result of a poorly drafted will, cases where the secret trust was created in an apparent attempt
to avoid tax liability, cases where the secret trust was created as a result of legal advice and
cases where the secret trust arose out of the testator s indecisiveness. It is clear that the doctrine
was not developed to allow testators to provide secretly for illegitimate families, or indeed for
reasons involving the Mortmain Acts. The obvious conclusion to draw is that any failure to

В¬Stem cells are yet undifferentiated cells, with the potential capability to further divide
indefinitely, and the ability to give rise to more specialized cell types. Embryonic stem(ES) cells
are of especially great importance due to their pluripotency and hence ability to differentiate to
cells of all three germ layers. Due to the great replicative powers of these cells, they may be used
to treat degenerative diseases, or injuries to the nervous system. However, as these ES cells are

The 24 candidate genes were then introduced to mouse embryonic fibroblast(MEF); when grown,
no single candidate was capable of activating the Fbx15 locus. Conversely when all 24
candidates were expressed Yamanaka and Takahashi were able to obtain multiple G418 resistant
colonies. The experiment was repeated, and six colonies were chosen. Out of these six, four
displayed morphology and proliferation properties which were highly similar to ES cells. Reverse
transcriptase PCR(RTPCR) revealed several ES cell markers, and further analysis provided evidence
that it was a combination of some of the 24 factors which induced pluripotency.
To find the specific combination required to induce pluripotency, Yamanaka and Takahashi
observed the effect of removing certain factors. A total of ten factors were noted to have critical
effect on the early growth of cells; removal of any of these ten factors resulted in no colony growth
within the first ten days of culturing. Furthermore, when these ten genes were combined, Yamanaka
and Takahashi noted that the resulting cells were more similar to ES cells than cells with all 24
factors were transduced. Out of these ten factors, further factors were withdrawn; when factors Oct
Вѕ or Klf4 were removed no G418 resistant colonies formed. Moreover, when Sox2 was removed
minimal colonies formed. While resistant colonies still formed despite the removal of c Myc, the
colonies had a distorted morphology from regular ES cells (Figure 1). The

Analysis Of River Out Of Eden And The Art Of War
It is difficult to argue whether strategy is an art form or science because it can actually be both. Sun
Tzu s text, The Art of War is an example of an ancient humanism text about strategies of war.
Humanism by definition is, an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human
rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanist beliefs stress the potential value and goodness
of human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek solely rational ways of solving
human problems (Dictionary.com). Therefore, humanism is much like philosophy which is related
to scienceyet influenced by the skill of art. Thomas Cleary starts off the text with a quote from
The Book of Balance and Harmony which states, To know after seeing is not worthy of being
called knowing (qtd. in Cleary, xv xvi), but since Sun Tzu s teachings are philosophical the text
renders itself as war knowledge. In River Out of Eden: A Darwinian View of Life , author and
biologist Richard Dawkins would greatly disagree with Cleary s quote because Dawkins believes
that, Scientific beliefs are supported by evidence, and they get results (Dawkins 33). According to
Dawkins, Darwinism has the power to explain natural occurrences in the universe and his mission
is to disprove supernatural views of creation and the world with observable scientific knowledge.
Although, military strategies are intuitive there are also observable scientific aspects to the art of
war which follow the scientific method.

Heroin And Its Effects On The Brain

can reach the brain by methods of injection, nasal inhalation, or smoked. In our brain there are
many receptor sites, each site specific for different neurotransmitters. In this paper I will refer to
the opiate receptor. Naturally, our brain is responsible for making endorphins, a natural opiate of
the body. These endorphins are the feel good chemical sensations in the brain, when we are

The opioid is synthesized from morphine, and when entering the brain, heroin is converted back
to morphine. Upon entering, the once opioid, now morphine, binds to opioid receptors,
specifically in the brainstem. The brainstem is vital for controlling automatic processes vital for
life, like blood pressure, arousal, and respiration. These processes are how we continue to live;
heroin use and overdose can then lead to death by suppression of these vital life processes, such as
suppression of breathing (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2014). While heroin undoubtedly
affects our processes of living, it also interrupts our sensations and perceptions. Users describe the
feeling of heroin as a euphoric or rush feeling. This rush reportedly last one to two minutes, where

Summary Of Abortion By Anne Sexton
In Anne Sexton s poem The Abortion , she uses literary devices to reflect her heart wrenching
decision of whether or not to abort one of her children, which reflects the style of confessional
poetry because she is sharing her personal feelings and experiences. Anne Sexton was a famous
poet of confessional poetry, where the poets write about their private experiences with feelings
about death, trauma, and depression in their lives. Anne Sexton wrote from the point of view of an
upper middle class woman. She had two children, and the stress of having them, gave her life long
depression. Sexton was sent to a psychiatric hospital after the birth of her second child. The
Abortiondisplays all of Sexton s feelings that she has about her abortion.
Sexton sets off the poem [driving] south (Sexton 5). She is describing her trip to go and get her
child aborted, and she sees the road sunken like a gray washboard (9). The road is extremely rough
and bumpy, which is often an unpleasant surface to drive on. The negative connotation of her car
ride there is making her trip start off horribly and she has not even gotten to the worst part of it
yet. The gray description of the road makes it seem lifeless, which reflects how Sexton is feeling
on her trip. She also sees grass as bristly and stout as chives (14). Chives are a tall green plant that
look like grass, which she describes as bristly . Indicating that the grass is rough and scratchy. This
gives it a negative connotation

How Did Alcatraz Final Escape
Alcatraz was considered inescapable. However, the final escape attempt remains a mystery
involving Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers. Some think they died, while others think they
lived (the focus of this article). Even though one body has been found and a paddle was
discovered at Alcatraz, it is likely they survived. Reasons being that there were many sightings,
potential supplies has been located elsewhere besides Alcatraz, and potential clues add up.
Potential clues may occasionally be disguised as coincidences. A car was stolen on the night of the
escape. Also, only one body was found out of three, and that was on the 17th, though they left on
the 11th. These facts from A Daring Plan to Escape Alcatraz and Escape From Alcatraz: June

The Importance Of Technology In The Classroom
Tap, tap, tap is going to be the new fad. Everywhere people go, they see technology being
integrated into different buildings. From office buildings to fast food restaurants, computer screens
and text are displayed everywhere. How come these places are combining technology with
business? Well, schools are incorporating the same principles into their commonplaces. Classrooms,
libraries, and hallways are all starting to light up with computer screens and tvs everywhere.
Educational facilitiesare turning to use the internet to teach by utilizing online teaching methods,
class communications, and the Google apps. First off, educational buildings around the world are
implementing new technologyinto their classrooms to fit with the changing times. Every year, a
new phone or piece of technology is being released. Why not put it to good use? Potential positive
reviews of having technology in the classroom are evident: Computer and communications
technology have each developed in recent years to offer individual tools that have potential for
improving the quality of education. (Bailey and Cotlar, Teaching ) There are definitely different
directions in which technology can be used in classrooms; whether it be text based, image based,
or speech based. These can also, and are often, be intertwined to form a mega educational
platform! Text based platforms, such as documents or emails, are the base of technology as a
whole. They are the meat in the taco for basic interaction with

Importance Of Experiential Teaching
Experiential Teaching Why
I vividly remember and most appreciate professors that connected theoretical content of a lecture to
their daily practices and experiences. Professors that shared experiential knowledge, allowed me to
gain deeper understanding of the content and practical applications. This combination allowed me
to quickly implement new practices in my classroom early in my teaching career and tools early in
my management career. I hope to be a higher education educator who makes experiential
connections and adds a practical dimension to my classes through the incorporation of real world
experiences. I believe this will allow future teachers to walk away with practical tools and
knowledge to better provide students with a 21st century education. Providing experiential and
theoretical knowledge will support teachers professional and academic growth by increasing their
overall knowledge.
Great teachers are the primary resources for improving instruction and preparing students for the
future (Sa, 1997). Students that have access to quality teachers and innovators, stand a greater
chance at competing in the workforces and positively impacting their communities (Peske Haycock,
2006). To position our current and future educators for success, professors that can create deep and
meaningful connections with their students stand a greater chance of successfully positioning our
educators (Bers, 2007). This need for practical professors fuels my desire to share my

No Tolerance For A Lack Of Maternity Leave
Zero Tolerance For A Lack Of Maternity Leave Whenever we hear a story on the news of a
woman or her family struggling because they re being refused maternity leave it breaks our
hearts. These women, expecting mothers, have to carry or have carried a child for roughly 9
months. Most if not all have done so by being on their feet all day and have only had the required
minimum for breaks. Is it then wrong to ask for maternity leave? Should pregnant women not be
allowed some work accommodations? Well, contrary to popular belief, maternity leave is more
than just a time for a woman s gestation period or relaxation. In a country with a population of
more than 308 million women I think maternity should be a right. So, then who is to blame for
the lack of maternity leave? The answer: male bosses. It s thanks to these bosses that once
women are mothers, they have to go back to work as soon as possible. All these new mothers are
told by their male bosses that they are expected back as soon as they can. These men allow little
to no maternity leave for women in the work force. And I think we can all agree that this is a
serious issue for our nation. There must be a solution to this detrimental illness afflicting our
country. Which is why I have proposed a solution that will benefit not only women but our whole
nation. If male bosses are forced to wear maternity belts they will feel sympathetic to the struggles
of pregnant women. They in turn will be motivated to give paid maternity

Suicide Causes, Etiologies, And Prevention Strategies
Suicide causes, etiologies, and prevention strategies were examined in Mesa county of western
Colorado. The highest population at risk for completion of suicide within Mesa county and that
of the national average were found to be White males between the ages of 36 54 years of age. Risk
factors of suicide and demographics of this population were assessed and compared to the efficacy
of current suicideprograms utilized within Mesa county. Data was then compared from Mesa
county s demographics, suicide rates, and prevention programs to current literature and the District
of Columbia, which hosts the lowest suicide rate in the country. The juxtaposition of current
literature and the District of Columbia s suicide prevention programs to Mesa county s current
suicide prevention program were made to identify the efficacy and areas of improvement needed to
further reduce suicide rates.
Suicide in Mesa County Suicide rates within the United States continue to rise at a steady rate.
Within the past several years, the suicide rate has steadily increased to 12.6 suicide deaths per
100,000 people, which comes to more than 41,000 deaths per year (Bower, 2016). Fleischmann et
al. (2016) found that despite preconceptions, suicide occurs in approximately 75% of lower to
middle class countries. Worldwide, around 50% of suicides account for violent death in men and
71% in women (Fleischmann, et al., 2016). In the United States alone, the largest percentage of

Leadership Skills to Manage Diversity in the Military
Essay 5: How Do Leaders Manage Diversity In The Military?
Introduction
Given the proliferation of missions that often have multiple objectives aligned to counterterrorism,
humanitarian aid, and national defense, the alacrity at which the armed forces are expected to
integrate and quickly deliver results in a foreign nation is increasing. The cross cultural competency
(3C) model is designed as a foundation for streamlining the cultural assimilation process, providing
leaders and subordinates with a more efficient approach to quickly understanding and become
effective in a culture different than one s own (Abbe, Gulick, Herman, 2007). As the alacrity and
intensity of cultural assimilation is increasing across all branches of the military, combined with
greater levels of mission complexity and required collaboration of foreign governments and
agencies, developing a effective 3C model is essential for mission success. The intent of this
analysis is to provide insights into how leaders can manage diversity more effectively in the
military, especially those called upon to serve in cultures significantly different than one s own.
Training in cross cultural competency often includes references to the Hofstede Model of Cultural
Dimensions and the specific attributes of collectivism versus individuality, two potentially
polarizing aspects of military leadership in foreign regions (Goodman, 2012). The Hofstede Model
of Cultural Dimensions is complimentary ot the 3C Model in that is

Manufactures suggested Retail Price
Manufactures Suggested Retail Price (MSRP)
The Manufacturer s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP), list price or recommended retail price (RPP)
of a product is the cost at which the manufacture proposes that the retailer offer the product.
Although the goal is to aid to institutionalize costs, it is not often the value the retailer use or the
value the customers are willing to pay. The retailer has the freedom to sell the products at a price
lower than the MSRP to move the product faster or they can set it higher than the MRSP to bring
in more profits if the item is selling faster than initially foreseen.
The MSRP for Allround suggested retail was $5.29, according to the PharmaSim case study, The
manufacturer s suggested retail price (MSRP) for Allround is relatively high with volume discounts
ranging from 25 40%, not including promotional allowances . Our pricing decision for the
PharmaSim simulation we felt was important because consumers have alternatives to choose from
and are better informed. Our initial retail price of $5.45 was an increase from the suggested retail
of $5.29 to adjust with inflation rate of 3.1%, which boost sales from $355.3 million to $434
million totaling $78.7 million in sales growth. We purchased survey data to help establish the price.
Consumers perceived our product being the most effective in cold relief which allowed Allstar to
raise the price incrementally and consumers were still willing to purchase the product.

Total Phenolic Content of Grape Juice using Visible Spectrophotometry
Abstract
The health benefits of red wine are well known and consumption has been encouraged more over
the years because of the populations increasing obesity rates and the inherent complications thereof;
including coronary heart disease and high blood pressure. Since the phenolic compounds in wine
combats these negative effects and originate from the grape itself the focus of this study was the
total phenolic content in red and white grape juice; measured in gallic acid equivalents ... Show

The concentrations of total phenolic compounds are written in Gallic Acid Equivalents (GAE) in
units of milligrams of gallic acid per 100 milliliters of juice. Educational institutes frown upon
buying students alcohol, even for scientific purposes, so white and red grape juices were used in
this experiment rather than wine to determine the total phenolic content by visible
spectrophotometery.
Objective
The overall objective of this experiment is to measure the total phenolics content in grape juice
using a standard curve to find the sample s phenolic concentration in milligrams of gallic acid
equivalent for every 100 milliliters of juice.
Materials and Methods
This experiment used the Gilson pipetman Neo, Genesys 20 spectrophotometer, Folin Ciocalteu s
phenol reagent, saturated Na2CO3 solution as well as the requisite test tubes, volumetric flasks,
analytical scale and graduated cylinder necessary to obtain accurate results. The first step required
the preparation of the gallic acid stock solution. This was made by quantitatively transferring 80
milligrams of gallic acid into a 250 mL volumetric flask, dissolving it into solution by using 50 mL
methanol, bringing it up to volume with deionized water and mixing the solution vigorously. The
final concentration of the stock solution should be approximately 320 Вµg/mL, depending on the
mass of gallic acid measured. The working solutions that

`` No One Can Serve Two Masters ``
We live in a world where a person s success is measured by how much money they have or by the
amount of possessions they own. God, however, calls us to live a different lifestyle. Matthew
6:24 says No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you
will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
Nevertheless, God also wants us to be frugal with our money so that we can bless others with our
excess. On My Own Two Feet gives some practical advice on how to get out of debt. The goal of
this book is to help people understand how they can live well today and also being able to save for
future needs. Some of the main idea of the book is to start savingnow to have an emergency fund,
to be able to pay for high priced items and to ensure a stable retirement. It is not until after the
personal finances are controlled can people really give generously and serve God with their
money. Deciding how much to spend and how much to save can be difficult. On My Own Two
Feet breaks down a gross income and shows what percentage of the income should be spent in
several different categories. The first, and the biggest, category is what they call the foundation
expenses (pg. 68). This includes all the stuff that is a basic need, such as food, shelter and
transportation. Because these are all necessitates in life, 45 percent of an income is devoted to
paying for them. The next biggest category is income taxes. According

OVER MOBILE NETWORKS
Abstract
The transition from physical to digital music distribution is bound to have profound implications on
the music industry. So far, most of the activity related to digital music distribution has been centred
on the fixed Internet. In the meantime, mobile operators have been making significant investments
in extending their network capabilities to support data services. This paper includes an analysis of
the current situation of music delivery in mobile networks, as well as future prospects enabled by
the technical evolution of mobile networks. The overall feasibility, and the potentially most viable
forms of, mobile music business are studied.

once the good is provided, additional resource cost of another person consuming the good is zero
and to prevent anyone from consuming it is either very expensive or impossible. Consequently,
recorded music exhibits the economic properties of information. One of the fundamental
economic properties of digital information deals with its cost structure characterized by low
reproduction costs. Another noteworthy attribute that can be associated with music is its nature
as an experience good. According to the definition by Shapiro and Varian, (1988), music can be
classified as an experience good since it needs to be experienced to know what it is. According to
other definitions by Hampe and Schwabe (2001), music is a repetitive good, since unlike many
other types of information, if one likes a song, one is inclined to listen to it over and over again. It
is essential to keep these economic properties in mind when considering mobile music distribution.
2.2 History of innovation in the music industry
The history of music distribution sees its birth in the early days when music printing was the only
means of distribution. Subsequently, the ability of audio recording and duplication emerged,
eventually giving rise to mass production capabilities using various technologies as storage media
(Figure 2).
Despite the continuous stream of innovation, the record labels have remained largely

The Problems Facing The United States
We are caught in a time of our nation s history when misfortunes, mismanagement, corruption, and
leftwing ideology come together in a powerful concurrence of circumstances that leave our once
dynamic nation at risk for disaster.
Americans are a people dependent upon a meddling, incompetent government with its foot on the
necks of its citizens. As incredible as it seems, our representatives allowed dictators and corrupt
regimes around the world to control nearly everything we need for survival. Moreover, this
administration is weak and incapacitated on the world stage, making us dependent upon the very
people who wish to annihilate us.
Dozens of pressing problems challenge America today. Unquestionably, however, the two most
urgent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There was a time when America rightfully boasted the greatest and most envied industrial complex
and manufacturing base in the history of mankind. However, that was before politicians decided to
over regulate, over tax, and enact never ending destructive legislation motivating business and
manufacturing to surrender and move to foreign countries offering more welcoming laws.
Further, national politicians signed unwise trade agreements with countries that placed the United
States in a subservient position on trade. Mega international corporation lobbyists became the
driving force for trade policy, and national security steadily suffered. Fair trade became a victim
of an ill conceived national policy and withered in the heat of backroom deals between money
brokers and politicians. The false narrative of free trade left our nation impotent in a world
offering depressed wages, fewer benefits, insignificant regulations, and lower taxes. Obviously,
good paying jobs with benefits vanished as we became less competitive.
International trade is an absolute necessity to a healthy U. S. economy. Unfortunately, big time
money speaks louder and more forcefully than common sense and fair economic practice.
Democrats and Republicans joined at the wallet with special interests, tragically left our national
security rusting away in hundreds of silent, inactive, and

How Did 12 Angry Men Decide One Man s Fate
12 Angry Men Decide One Man s Fate
Henry Fonda produces and stars in this no fuss Courtroom Drama where a young man s life hangs
in the balance in 1950s America; masterfully exploring the complexities of the justice system and
human behaviour.
Description
The film s origin is as a stage play by Reginald Rose, who also adapted it for television, before
teaming up with Fonda to bringing this powerful story to the big screen (eds Higgins Ross 2008, p.

Kenyon Hopkins orchestral score is also minimal but effective, accentuating the film s key scenes.
Boris Kaufman s cinematography is spare and creates a claustrophobic feel (eds Higgins Ross
2008, p. 173). This is particularly effective in tandem with the confides of the jury room; which
aids the tension building and puts the characters actions centre stage (Buchanan Huczynski 2004, p.

The lack of colour fits the film though, creating a stark atmosphere for the twelve actors to work

straightforward premise.

  • 3. Merchant s Tale The Merchant s Tale Summary The merchant s tale from The Canterbury Tales may be one of the more versatile tales, as the relationships the merchant holds is common throughout both life and in literature. The tale opens with a prologue, and the merchant s open objection to marriage. He voiced his anger and said that all married men are morose, and complains about his wife s qualities. He also said, I have a wife, the worst possible; for though the devil were married to her she would outdo him, I ll swear... She is a thorough shrew... How well off I d be if I were only free again (Chaucer 224)! Here, the prologue ends and the rest of the story opens up. The story explains that the merchant was a worthy and wealthy knight who lived in Lombardy. He had been single for 60 years, and had always satisfied his physical desires for women... He also wanted to make sure that all of his estates and money should go to his blood (preferably sons), rather than some strangers. The merchant, whose name is revealed to be January, stresses the importance of marrying quickly, and that she must be younger than 20 years and pure . January then asks his two brother s, Placebo and Justinus, thoughts about marriage. Placebo is very agreeing to January s proposal. Justinus, however, is married and says that he is miserable and is very against January marrying. January ignores Placebo s warning against marriage, and begins to search for his new wife. Jean Luc Godard s Weekend as Didactic Self-Reflexive Cinema James Goodman 5 March 2005 Auguiste Communication Essay Jean Luc Godard s Weekend as Didactic Self Reflexive Cinema According to Stephen Prince in Movies and Meaning: an Introduction to Film, Screen Reality is a concept that pertains to the principles of time, space, character behavior and audiovisual design that filmmakers systematically organize in a given film to create an ordered world on screen in which characters may act and in which a narrative may unfold.(262) One mode of cinematic screen reality is self reflexivity. While the other three modes of screen reality seek to sway the audience into accepting the authenticity of the world and the story that are on screen, the self reflexive style deliberately attempts to tear down... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Weekend represents the culture of political violence and social experimentation, artistic and sexual, which was the latter half of the 1960s. This somewhat comic but depressing film of Godard s is a satirical poem and construct of the contempt with which he obviously holds bourgeoisie society. Much of the film expresses this through the use of symbolism and metaphor. In order to better facilitate the process whereby the audience becomes aware of Godard s intentions and his message he introduces us to a young Parisian married couple. Godard sets the clichГ©d couple, alienated and bourgeois, on a journey for Corinne s parents country house, hoping to find them either dead or willing to sign the will. As they persist in their journey we are given various opportunities to appreciate the absolute complacency and ignorance of the couple (meant to be emblematic of all bourgeois). Godard tries to peel off the hypocrisy of bourgeois society through the weekend trip of this Parisian middle class couple. Weekend is a clear continuation of the style, and even ideology, which originated with Brecht s work in the theater. Jean Luc Godard weaves didactic self reflexive techniques throughout the film, in order to break the illusion that the spectator is watching a real, authentic world on screen rather than a movie. In doing so, Godard finds the ability to share his discourse directly with the audience instead of employing characters to do the job for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Essay about The Vietnam War s Effects on American Society The Vietnam War s Effects on American Society Abstract The Vietnam War had a profound effect on American society. It changed the way we viewed our government, the media, and our Constitutional rights. Because of this shift in perspective, the country was torn apart and yet still came together in new and different ways. The Vietnam War s contraversiality spurred a great many sources of protest, against our government s use of power, how far we could stretch the rights of free expression, and primarily against the violence of the war itself. These changes in the behavior of society have left a lasting mark on our perception and the demand to be informed since that influencial period of social turmoil. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was not just a war in Vietnam or in America, but the war became a symbol (Gioglio, 20). One of the most prevelant type of protests were based on the imparting of knowledge. These were known as teach ins. The teach ins were really the first step in raising conciousness to the impact the war could have(Fever, 11). They were the first things to get people informed and involved. Starting with teach ins during the spring of 1965, the massive antiwar efforts centered on the colleges, with the students playing leading roles. These teach ins were mass public demonstrations, usually held in the spring and fall seasons. The teach in movement was at first, a gentle approach to the antiwar activity (Gettleman, 54). Teach ins were one important way to bring more people into the antiwar movement. During a teach in, students, faculty members, and guest speakers discussed issues concerning the Vietnam war (McCormick, 37). The teach ins began at the University of Michigan in March of 1965, and spread to other campuses, including Wisconsin in April. These protests at some of America s most well known universities attracted the public eye. The demonstrations were one form of attempting to go beyond mere words and research and reason, and to put direct pressure on those who were conducting policy in apparent disdain for the will expressed by the voters (Spector, 30 31). • 8. The Narmer Palette For about 3000 years, there were conventions to Egyptian art. The way people, gods, and the natural world were depicted was governed by these canons. There were styles and techniques that could be found used in almost every painting from the Early Dynastic period to the New Kingdom, and the Narmer Palette is one of the earliest works discovered that depicts these traditional conventions of Egyptian art. The Narmer Palette is a ceremonial object that was made between 3000 and 2920 BCE. It was found ritually buried in a temple for the god Horus in Hierakonpolis, Egypt. Throughout this work are many different examples of traditional Egyptian styles and techniques being used. Both sides of the palette are divided into registers. The back of the ... It is commonly believed that it shows the unification of Lower and Upper Egypt, as on one side the King wears the crown of Lower Egypt and on the other, he wears the crown of Upper Egypt. This is the earliest discovered example of the same king wearing both crowns. There is a dispute over whether the scenes are supposed to depict an actual battle or battles that took place during the unification or if it is ceremonial and represents the unification. This work caught my attention because of how it depicts the conventions of Egyptian art. It is interesting to compare this work of art to the works created during the Middle and the New Kingdom and see the similarities in how hieratic scale is used to show importance, composite poses, the combination of both art and language, and many others. The Narmer Palette is seemingly the start to 3000 years of artistic style. Another thing that interests me about this work is that it is a palette. A palette is not something considered special in modern times, yet back then it must have had a more important meaning or been a more common everyday object for someone to care to take the time to create this piece as a palette, rather than just a work of art. The Narmer Palette is ancient work of art that demonstrates many of the conventions that were found in Egyptian art for thousands of years after the creation of this ... Social media has played a huge influential factor in allowing people to communicate with others, release news quickly, keep the population updated, along with many other advantages. It has also become a place where people especially teens, talk about romance in a cultural way. In one of my favorite TV shows, Gossip Girl, drama and cultural romance is the key factor in all of the characters lives. There is an anonymous gossip girl who posts online the drama pertaining to the city s most elite groups, which happens to be the main characters who attend the same high school. For the purpose of this essay, the main characters to be discussed are Serena Van der Woodsen , Blair Waldorf, Chuck Bass, Nate Archibald, and Dan Humphrey. Serena and Blair have been best friends since forever, and are very popular. At the beginning of the show, Blair is dating Nate who is best friends with Chuck. These four are all very popular not just in school, but their last names cause them to be very well known to the public eye. Dan is an outsider who ends up getting looped into the drama. As the episodes and seasons of the show progress, old relationships start to fade away while new relationships are arising, and gossip girl does not miss a beat. It is a constant flow of romance between the characters. One of the most iconic relationships is that between Chuck and Blair. Their relationship is a roller coaster in itself. • 11. Essay about The Central Part of Berkeley s Metaphysics The Central Part of Berkeley s Metaphysics The central part of Berkeley s metaphysics seems paradoxical or even absurd. Its claim is that what we call solid, and indeed everything else that we find laid out in the three dimensional physical word that is apparently around us, is only fictional. It appears to be there, but it does not really have an independent existence. The physical world is, according to Berkeley, dependent on and only perceived through a mental state. Hence, none or these qualities exist outside the mind because we all see things differently. It is impossible, therefore, that matter be something existing in itself, objective, inert, and devoid of thought. According to Berkeley, when we say that a thing exists, we mean nothing more than that such a thing is merely perceived by us. Berkeley stated, To be is to be perceived. Berkeley s answer to the philosophical question, if there is no one in the forest when a tree falls, is there a sound, would be no because the forest cannot exist without a perceiver. Primary or secondary qualities, substances and impressions are nothing other than acts of perception, that is, mental facts; and their existence signifies their being perceived as mental acts. If I walk into a room containing a table, the table exists. However, when I leave the room, the table no longer exists. The Paradoxical problem arises when one asks, how is it then that when I return to the room, the table is still there? While denying the existence of a material world, Berkeley did not deny the existence of the world of spirits/minds. He believed that from the very presence of ideas and impressions, there had to existence finite spirits/minds, and because there had to be an origin of these ideas/impression, there had to exist a finite spirit/mind. Bodhidharma, according to tradition, was a man so epic that he removed his own eyelids in order to win a staring contest with a rock wall (from his severed eyelids sprang tealeaves, and thus, the connection between Zen Buddhism and tea drinking). The main teaching of Zen is that of zazen, or seated meditation, and that only through meditation and action, rather than cogitation, can one achieve enlightenment (Elwood, 127 132). The cook will be criticized if the rice is too hard, the soup is too salty, the vegetables have been cut too small, the tea is lukewarm, the faucet is left dripping (Hori, 13 14). Hori goes on to say that if Zen Buddhist masters taught rationally, rather than intuitively, a new cook would be taken aside for a while in the weeks preceding his appointment and shown how to cook properly. However, in not being taught the proper way to prepare meals, and through being forced to constantly be mindful of his actions and the effects they will have on the reactions of his fellow monks, Zen is effectively being practiced. Another thing that Rinzai and Soto have in common is their effort to keep monastic life simple to the point of being almost primitive. This includes the use of wood fires, non flushing toilets, no running water, no heating or air conditioning, and often no electricity. (Hori, 14) By not allowing the use of modern, time saving innovations, Zen Buddhist monks are forced to spend much more time focused on simple, day to day activities, again improving the general state of awareness that Zen Buddhism seems to be all about. Along the same lines, monasteries have strict, often harsh, rules dictating many mundane aspects of everyday life. As we saw in the movie, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Organizations have to be planned, opened, and organized, healthcare providers , managers, and other employees need to be hired, and much more. One of the most important employees within an organization is the compensation specialist. Compensation specialists supervise and manage the employee compensation programs within an organization. Some of the common responsibilities include: developing the organization s pay structure, managing and improving all bonus or commissions, and preparing job descriptions (DeCenzo, Robbins, Verhulst, 2013). According to Samantha Smith, a compensation specialist for Rocky Mountain Sleep Clinic, the process of determining an employee s salaryis rather long and time consuming. She says that there are five steps she follows to develop the salaries within the organization. First she must review her own pay practice to help determine the budget of the company. Once this is completed, she must determine the definition and description of each job, which is later used to advertise the position during the hiring process. A proper description of each position allows for the applicants to understand what they are applying for. Employees also know what is expected of them after reading the job description. The bacterial cells in biofilms exchange nutrients and metabolites by means of water channels between the micro colonies (Kokare et al., 2009). The microbes living deep within natural biofilms may often receive low nutrition due to restricted rates of diffusion of nutrients through the biofilm (Petroff et al., 2011). Biofilms are also known to provide a suitable environment for syntrophic relationships between the two metabolically distinct bacteriafor the exchange of substrates/nutrients (Kokare et al., 2009). Bacteria in biofilms can express stress responsive genes in greater amount and switch to forms that are more tolerant. The existence of common regulators, the presence of extracellular polymeric substances, and biofilm heterogeneity are major factors by which biofilms show tolerance against various stressors such as, starvation, heat or cold shock, cell density, pH, and osmolarity (Dufour et al., 2010; Gambino Cappitelli, 2016). Sun Tzu s text, The Art of War is an example of an ancient humanism text about strategies of war. Humanism by definition is, an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to human rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanist beliefs stress the potential value and goodness of human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek solely rational ways of solving human problems (Dictionary.com). Therefore, humanism is much like philosophy which is related to scienceyet influenced by the skill of art. Thomas Cleary starts off the text with a quote from The Book of Balance and Harmony which states, To know after seeing is not worthy of being called knowing (qtd. in Cleary, xv xvi), but since Sun Tzu s teachings are philosophical the text renders itself as war knowledge. In River Out of Eden: A Darwinian View of Life , author and biologist Richard Dawkins would greatly disagree with Cleary s quote because Dawkins believes that, Scientific beliefs are supported by evidence, and they get results (Dawkins 33). • 40. Heroin And Its Effects On The Brain Heroin, a chemical imposter, is an illegal, extremely addictive drug derived from opium. Heroin can reach the brain by methods of injection, nasal inhalation, or smoked. In our brain there are many receptor sites, each site specific for different neurotransmitters. In this paper I will refer to the opiate receptor. Naturally, our brain is responsible for making endorphins, a natural opiate of the body. These endorphins are the feel good chemical sensations in the brain, when we are exposed to pain or stress. Heroinmimics the opium chemical, creating the effect of pleasure and euphoric feelings. I will look into how heroin affects the cerebral cortex and how different genders perceive and treat the effects of heroin. The opiates in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The opioid is synthesized from morphine, and when entering the brain, heroin is converted back to morphine. Upon entering, the once opioid, now morphine, binds to opioid receptors, specifically in the brainstem. The brainstem is vital for controlling automatic processes vital for life, like blood pressure, arousal, and respiration. These processes are how we continue to live; heroin use and overdose can then lead to death by suppression of these vital life processes, such as suppression of breathing (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2014). While heroin undoubtedly affects our processes of living, it also interrupts our sensations and perceptions. Users describe the feeling of heroin as a euphoric or rush feeling. This rush reportedly last one to two minutes, where the actual high lasts hours. Other sensations associated with heroin are reduction of anxiety and depression, safe and warm feelings, and pain relief (Hartney, 2014). While heroin affects sensations, it also changes motor functions, such as reaction times. In a study I examined, experimenters tested reaction times in heroin abusers of different genders. In the experiment, researchers formulated two groups, one control and the other heroin dependent currently in a withdrawal period; researchers choose participants specifically on certain guidelines. For the experiment, participants were asked to focus on a visual stimulus on a computer screen. There were asked to press a button when they saw the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 41. Summary Of Abortion By Anne Sexton In Anne Sexton s poem The Abortion , she uses literary devices to reflect her heart wrenching decision of whether or not to abort one of her children, which reflects the style of confessional poetry because she is sharing her personal feelings and experiences. Anne Sexton was a famous poet of confessional poetry, where the poets write about their private experiences with feelings about death, trauma, and depression in their lives. Anne Sexton wrote from the point of view of an upper middle class woman. She had two children, and the stress of having them, gave her life long depression. Sexton was sent to a psychiatric hospital after the birth of her second child. The Abortiondisplays all of Sexton s feelings that she has about her abortion. Sexton sets off the poem [driving] south (Sexton 5). She is describing her trip to go and get her child aborted, and she sees the road sunken like a gray washboard (9). The road is extremely rough and bumpy, which is often an unpleasant surface to drive on. The negative connotation of her car ride there is making her trip start off horribly and she has not even gotten to the worst part of it yet. The gray description of the road makes it seem lifeless, which reflects how Sexton is feeling on her trip. She also sees grass as bristly and stout as chives (14). Chives are a tall green plant that look like grass, which she describes as bristly . Indicating that the grass is rough and scratchy. This gives it a negative connotation ... Importance Of Experiential Teaching Experiential Teaching Why I vividly remember and most appreciate professors that connected theoretical content of a lecture to their daily practices and experiences. Professors that shared experiential knowledge, allowed me to gain deeper understanding of the content and practical applications. This combination allowed me to quickly implement new practices in my classroom early in my teaching career and tools early in my management career. I hope to be a higher education educator who makes experiential connections and adds a practical dimension to my classes through the incorporation of real world experiences. I believe this will allow future teachers to walk away with practical tools and knowledge to better provide students with a 21st century education. Providing experiential and theoretical knowledge will support teachers professional and academic growth by increasing their overall knowledge. Great teachers are the primary resources for improving instruction and preparing students for the future (Sa, 1997). Students that have access to quality teachers and innovators, stand a greater chance at competing in the workforces and positively impacting their communities (Peske Haycock, 2006). To position our current and future educators for success, professors that can create deep and meaningful connections with their students stand a greater chance of successfully positioning our educators (Bers, 2007). • 47. No Tolerance For A Lack Of Maternity Leave Zero Tolerance For A Lack Of Maternity Leave Whenever we hear a story on the news of a woman or her family struggling because they re being refused maternity leave it breaks our hearts. These women, expecting mothers, have to carry or have carried a child for roughly 9 months. Most if not all have done so by being on their feet all day and have only had the required minimum for breaks. Is it then wrong to ask for maternity leave? Should pregnant women not be allowed some work accommodations? Well, contrary to popular belief, maternity leave is more than just a time for a woman s gestation period or relaxation. In a country with a population of more than 308 million women I think maternity should be a right. So, then who is to blame for the lack of maternity leave? The answer: male bosses. It s thanks to these bosses that once women are mothers, they have to go back to work as soon as possible. All these new mothers are told by their male bosses that they are expected back as soon as they can. These men allow little to no maternity leave for women in the work force. And I think we can all agree that this is a serious issue for our nation. There must be a solution to this detrimental illness afflicting our country. Which is why I have proposed a solution that will benefit not only women but our whole nation. If male bosses are forced to wear maternity belts they will feel sympathetic to the struggles of pregnant women. They in turn will be motivated to give paid maternity ... • 49. Leadership Skills to Manage Diversity in the Military Essay 5: How Do Leaders Manage Diversity In The Military? Introduction Given the proliferation of missions that often have multiple objectives aligned to counterterrorism, humanitarian aid, and national defense, the alacrity at which the armed forces are expected to integrate and quickly deliver results in a foreign nation is increasing. The cross cultural competency (3C) model is designed as a foundation for streamlining the cultural assimilation process, providing leaders and subordinates with a more efficient approach to quickly understanding and become effective in a culture different than one s own (Abbe, Gulick, Herman, 2007). As the alacrity and intensity of cultural assimilation is increasing across all branches of the military, combined with greater levels of mission complexity and required collaboration of foreign governments and agencies, developing a effective 3C model is essential for mission success. The intent of this analysis is to provide insights into how leaders can manage diversity more effectively in the military, especially those called upon to serve in cultures significantly different than one s own. Training in cross cultural competency often includes references to the Hofstede Model of Cultural Dimensions and the specific attributes of collectivism versus individuality, two potentially polarizing aspects of military leadership in foreign regions (Goodman, 2012). The concentrations of total phenolic compounds are written in Gallic Acid Equivalents (GAE) in units of milligrams of gallic acid per 100 milliliters of juice. Educational institutes frown upon buying students alcohol, even for scientific purposes, so white and red grape juices were used in this experiment rather than wine to determine the total phenolic content by visible spectrophotometery. Objective The overall objective of this experiment is to measure the total phenolics content in grape juice using a standard curve to find the sample s phenolic concentration in milligrams of gallic acid equivalent for every 100 milliliters of juice. Materials and Methods This experiment used the Gilson pipetman Neo, Genesys 20 spectrophotometer, Folin Ciocalteu s phenol reagent, saturated Na2CO3 solution as well as the requisite test tubes, volumetric flasks, analytical scale and graduated cylinder necessary to obtain accurate results. The first step required the preparation of the gallic acid stock solution. God, however, calls us to live a different lifestyle. Matthew 6:24 says No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. Nevertheless, God also wants us to be frugal with our money so that we can bless others with our excess. On My Own Two Feet gives some practical advice on how to get out of debt. The goal of this book is to help people understand how they can live well today and also being able to save for future needs. Some of the main idea of the book is to start savingnow to have an emergency fund, to be able to pay for high priced items and to ensure a stable retirement. It is not until after the personal finances are controlled can people really give generously and serve God with their money. Deciding how much to spend and how much to save can be difficult. One of the fundamental economic properties of digital information deals with its cost structure characterized by low reproduction costs. Another noteworthy attribute that can be associated with music is its nature as an experience good. According to the definition by Shapiro and Varian, (1988), music can be classified as an experience good since it needs to be experienced to know what it is. According to other definitions by Hampe and Schwabe (2001), music is a repetitive good, since unlike many other types of information, if one likes a song, one is inclined to listen to it over and over again. It is essential to keep these economic properties in mind when considering mobile music distribution. 2.2 History of innovation in the music industry The history of music distribution sees its birth in the early days when music printing was the only means of distribution.
