the messenger themes essay
Novel Essay
The Messenger
Everyone can live beyond what they are capable of. Discuss in relation to The Messenger
The Messenger by Markus Zusak shows us that everyone can live beyond what they are capable of. As
the protagonist Ed, helps those in need, he is challenged to do things beyond his capability. In the
beginning, Ed is described as the epitome of ordinariness and he is called a dead man . The reason for
this is because he has no meaning to his life and nothing to live for, no goals, ambitions or plans for
the future. When he starts receiving the cards however, Ed, for the first time in his life makes a
difference in the world around him which pushes him to achieve beyond what he was originally
capable of.
As he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This tells us how much Ed cares and loves Audrey and wants more than a friendship for the both of
them to have.
Love:
Love is a powerful theme in the book the messenger, it affects most characters, especially Ed, Audrey
and Ed s mum.
Love is what Ed ultimately desires. Ed wants Audrey to fall in love with Ed and for Audrey to
experience love again, as opposed to just sex. Ed s role being the messenger eventually allows Audrey
to fall in love with Ed and not fear love as she did in past relationships.
Ed also seeks love within his Mother and for her to accept him as her son. After the Clown Street
message and the heavy discussion with his mother, Ed gains an understanding of why their
relationship is so broken. This leads ED into a better situation with his mother and overall the love he
has been asking and craving for from his mother, even if its not the traditional love we would expect
between a mother and son. My heart is so tired , Ed says to himself after trying and trying to win over
Audrey, this quote shows us how much Ed has tried and tried to love but Audrey wouldn t except it.
Violence:
Violence plays a big role, starting with the bank robbery. Ed will and did face a lot of violence from
Edgar street, the rose brothers, the sledge match, Daryl and Keith, an as readers we are quite aware
that all of these obstacles have shaped and changed Ed s life mostly for the better. This is usually
shown with Ed s ease with violence, even when confronted by a

Magical Realism In Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Kids taken from mothers, people stripped of their cultures, and families separated. Latin American
people have gone through burdens unimaginable to other, more developed, countries around the
world. Latin America has a very distinct culture, but that culture was stripped from the people and
replaced with another culture. Latin America s diverse culture shows in its use of magical realism and
their intriguing ways of telling history. Magical realism is used to represent the mistreated figures and
atrocious leaders in their literature. One of these writers is Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Born in
Aracataca, Colombia this latino writer used magical realism in his stories to represent the conditions
in Latin America. He uses characters in his stories to represent Latin America and how the countries
people are treated. Gabriel originally went to school to be a lawyer, but later gave that up to be a
journalist. His short stories and inspirational speeches were awarded the Nobel Prize of Literature and
the International Literature Award. Although Latin America was beaten down, they still persevered.
They gained their independence and started to become the great country they once were. Like Gabriel
said in his speech, The Solitude of Latin America, Nevertheless, in the face of oppression, pillage, and
abandonment, our reply is life. This tells us that Latin America, in the face of defeat, rises and comes
back twice as strong. The constant oppression of their people and the suffering

General George Custer s Long Journey To The Little Big Horn
The sound of gun fire echoed across the central plains like deafening crashes of thunder. The rich
green grass was slowly turning red with blood, as Native Americans and the United states army were
waging war at the battle of the Little Big Horn. Many people know that the Native Americans were
victorious over the United states army, which was under the command of General George Custer, but
few people know that Custer s long journey to the Little Big Horn started in the heart of North Dakota,
at Fort Abraham Lincoln. Today this beautiful Fort has been reconstructed to have both historical
significance as well as a variety of recreational activities, and has been renamed Fort Abraham

The park has 94 campsites with plans to build a few more sites (Shafer 1). These sights are now
reservation only so if you would like to camp you should make you reservation early. The park also is
strategically placed at the convergence of the Heart and Missouri river which make it great for fishing.
In the fall the park is open to youth hunters to try and control the population of dear and other game
that are within the parks borders. The beautiful landscape is great for hiking and biking trails, both off
road and paved trails. One of the most unique aspects of the park is that it is open for horse riding.
Many horse owners love the park because it is one of the few remaining state parks that still allows
them to ride within the park. If none of these activities interest you, there are also other special events
that the park holds. For example, there are multiple color dashes and runs, along with a variety of
treasure hunts throughout the summer. With these options, available you don t have to love history to
want to visit Fort Abraham Lincoln. Fort Abraham Lincoln has been reconstructed so that it has
historical significance; however, it also has a variety of recreational activities for people that are not
interested in history. The beautiful park allows you to tour the military post and Indian village, while

Use of language and Word Choice in My Last Duchess Essay
My Last Duchess by Robert Browning is a dramatic monologue in which the Duke of Ferrara is
discussing the matter of a dowry with an emissary sent by a Count. The use of dramatic monologue
allows the poet to subtly reveal the personality of the persona to the reader.
The language used by the speaker allows the poet to evoke strong emotions in the reader.
The reader is given an early insight into the personality of the Duke in the very first line of the
monologue:
That s my last Duchess painted on the wall
This early impression portrays the Duke as a very sophisticated man with a wealth of knowledge in
art. This impression is continued when he mentions the very artist who painted the Duchess, Fra
Pandolf .
However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This manner is not only continued, but emphasised further still when the Duke reverts to the subject of
money, discussing the situation with the
dowry . This shows how superficial and indeed shameful a person the
Duke is.
This shameful personality is brought out further still by the poet s use of rhyme and rhythm, the very
heart of the poem. The poet s use of style represents the Duke himself the poem has many example of
rhyme, for example Paint and Faint and, Durst and First this would suggest that the persona was
articulate. However, this is shown to be nothing more than a façade in the way in which the lines of
the poem run together, showing that the poet is not as skilled in language as he would like to make
out:
but/thanked/Somehow
The Duke here is seen to be struggling to express himself, showing his lack of skill in language and
emphasising that he has tried to create a false impression of himself. Even the rhythm of the poem,
iambic pentameter, which is very regular and basic, reflects the simplicity of the speaker himself, in
terms of his linguistic ability. The manner in which the Duke tries to cover up this limited ability
emphasises his superficiality.
However, it is the poet s clever use of word choice which is most effective in revealing the Duke s
personality.

Ethics and Morality in Vegetarianism
The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that their treatment has no moral
significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal
compassion is the only guarantee of morality. (Schopenhauer). I always wondered why some people
are not so drawn to the consumption of meat and fed up with only one thought about it. Why so many
people loathe of blood, and why so few people can easily kill and be slaughter animal, until they just
get used to it? This reaction should say something about the most important moments in the code,
which was programmed in the human psyche. Realization the necessity of refraining from meat is
especially difficult because people consume it for a long time, ... Show more content on

An ancient Greek philosopher and scientist Pythagoras was convinced that whoever kills an animal
without any remorse can easily kill a man. Other philosophers were even more straightforward and
indicated that cruelty to animals leads to wars. It leads me to believe that the attitude towards animals
is not something we can merely write off as a showcase of the innate cruelty of man , but an indicator
of our society s ethical level. If more people become aware of the suffering and death of animals that
we, as a people, have caused, and acknowledge it, it would be a small, but significant sign of moral
growth. Although moral principles have gained increasing recognition due to their usefulness for the
society, i.e. for pragmatic reasons, the evolution of ethics had different roots psychological and
spiritual. It is based on the person s ability for empathy: which is the basis of moral behavior of a
person, his kindness, and decency. It can be argued that the ability for empathy separates man from the
world of animals. With the development of spirituality and feelings of compassion, people began to
feel uncomfortable by the fact that their actions were constantly associated with the infliction of
suffering to other beings, and even their death. Even in ancient times, high minds have concluded that
man,

Weekly Training Session 1 Sanctions
In today s training session we will be focusing on the sanctions regimes our international bank must
consider when carrying out its global business including the implications of extra territoriality. We will
also examine the consequences of failing to comply with sanctions.
What are the sanctions regimes our international bank must consider?
Firstly, we all need to be clear on what sanctions regimes are and how they are set out. Financial and
Trade Sanctions are part of a package of measures applied by individual countries, International
Organisations or Regional Bodies to fight aggression, terrorism, criminal behaviour or violations of
human rights. These Sanctions measures are intended to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Objectivity Of Science And Science
The objectivity of science would be contingent on our trust in the scientists who are feeding us
knowledge. We often believe these scientists, but is there actually a reason for us to trust what they are
passing on to us? What would science be if they had not been telling the truth? There is no denying the
existence of public trust in the words of scientists, but it should be noted that everything that we
understand as scientific fact today would be in question if we lost trust in our scientists. Teachers of
science, doers of science, and scientific writers are most definitely the source of the majority of our
scientific knowledge. We have to trust these people though because if we do not trust them, who do
we trust?
The main point I am ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
And if so, is being virtuous and moral enough of a reason for us to confirm our trust in the reliability
and authority of science? Could it not be the case that scientists are seen as ordinary people possessing
extraordinary knowledge as a result of their job title or description? The fact that we have this
widespread trust of science proves that we must believe to have an understanding of what scientists
are like.
There has been a long going development of a public image of scientists, one that has recently begun
to change. Due to factors such as the internet and the media, science is something that is able to been
seen and looked into simultaneously by numerous people. When a scientist intentionally fudges their
data, it is not small news. Problems of this sort have birthed various concerns about science, and about
science s authority and reliability in specific. This speculation of dishonest scientists not only will
effect the reliability of science in the eyes of the public, but also the realm in which scientists are
producing truly credible knowledge. Our technical knowledge is only as secure as the moral economy
in which it is produced (Shapin, ?). As of now, the way in which scientists come to agree or settle
disputes, is an issue that we cannot fully grasp.
This skepticism of scientific objectivity appears to be the cause of a number of our fundamental
contemporary dilemmas regarding the morality and authority of science. As long as scientists

Drugs are a complex problem with widespread political, economic and social implications for
producing, transit, and consumer nations. In the area of foreign policy, political and economic
instability in drug producing areas around the world and particularly in Latin America is an epidemic
that cannot be ignored. The objective of this paper is to asses the past issues, current status, and future
prospects of the US war on drugs in Latin America specifically Panama. It begins with a brief

Drugs are a problem of epidemic proportions. They kill and destroy lives. In the 5 years leading up to
the trial of Manual Antonio Noriega, cocaine related deaths increased nationwide by 500 percent, and
heroin related deaths in the United States increased 64 percent[4]. Drugs are also a major cause of
infant fatalities and birth defects. A study of 95 children who died before the age of 5 shows that in
three quarters of those cases, at least one of the parent?s abuse drugs. In 1987, the New York?s Harlem
Hospital, one of the few hospitals in New York Sate to keep detailed figures declared that over 400
babies tested positive for drugs at birth[5]. In addition, it was estimated that in one day, 5,000
Americans will use cocaine or crack for the very first time and at least 20 million Americans have
already tried cocaine while at least 1 million Americans are addicts.
As a result of statistics such as those presented above, President Reagan declared a ?war on drugs? in
the early 1980?s. In 1983, Congress enacted the Rangel Gilman Hawkins amendment. This
amendment requires the State Department annually to report on the efforts of major drug exporting
countries. In theory, these reports would act to curtail production. If a country fails to make reasonable
efforts at curtailment, the sanction is the loss of economic aid. In March of 1988, the State Department
reported to the President as the act required, however, the report only recommended three

In his article The Columbian Voyages, the Columbian Exchange, and Their Historians , Alfred W.
Crosby seems to think that much of the Columbian voyages and what came out of them was
detrimental to many cultures, most of all the Native Americans. Crosby brings up many institutions
and ideologies to re enforce his opinion, such as the slave trade and the conquest of many Native
American cultures. One of the major effects of the Columbian exchange was the decimation of the
Native American population. Crosby attributes this to many factors, the conquest of the Europeans, the
cultural vacuum created by European attempts to Christianize the Amerindians, and the introduction
of new and lethal micro organisms into the ecosystem. More commonly ... Show more content on

This in turn would lead to more consumption at the top of the food chain, eliminating the predators to
creatures at the lower end of the food chain. This would cause their numbers to rise, which would lead
to irreparable damage to the ever fragile ecosystem.
Another reason that disease is needed was defined by Thomas Malthus. His concept is called the
Malthusian Law, which states that the population will increase geometrically while the food supply
will increase arithmetically. This, simply put, means that the population will grow enormously faster
than the food supply will. Predictably, this leads to starvation and death. Disease, as a natural check,
prevents this from happening. As the population is checked, the supply of food can keep up with the
growth of population, keeping the ecosystem balanced. If disease was not a prevalent factor to check
the growth of population, then the Malthusian Law certainly would be.
However, checking the growth of population is not the only reason the disease is needed. Exposure to
viruses can also help future generations of humans live longer and more fruitful lives. Strange as it
may sound, being exposed to a particular virus can help one s children become better equipped to deal

The Letter Apology Of The Stolen Generations By Kevin Rudd
The 2008 apology to the Stolen Generations by Kevin Rudd is historically significant for a number of
reasons (Creative Spirits, 2014). Some felt it provided closure to a painful and traumatic part of
Indigenous history while others fail to see how the apology has in the years after proven to change the
circumstances of Indigenous peoples. Impacts in areas such as health, education, economic
opportunity and involvement in child protection and/or the criminal justice system are all areas which
should have been impacted by the Apology (Creative Spitis, 2014). However; as this essay will
explore very little impact has been made in any of these areas in actual fact in some ways the gap has
been made wider or perpetuated by acts of government. The Apology was a significant historical event
but it is important to explain why it happened before examining the affects it has had on the
Indigenous community and wider Australia (Creative Spirits, 2014). The Apology was more then just
simply an apology, it acted as a statement of acknowledgement by the Australian Government that
previous governments had committed wrongdoings by removing thousands of Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander children from their homes and families to be placed with White families and missions
(religious camps which taught children white values essentially removing them from all their cultural
roots) (Creative Spirits, 2014). This practice had incredibly adverse affects on families, the children

Essay on Civilization Versus Savagery in Golding s Lord of...
Man has demonstrated that he is master of everything except his own nature. This quote from Henry
Miller demonstrates that even the best of people can be tempted and twisted by their own nature. Like
the symbolic pig’s head stuck in the calm forests clearing, all beauty and innocence can be mutated
when order is overthrown by impulse actions. In William Golding’s novel, Lord of the Flies, a central
theme exists demonstrating the deterioration of civilization, and the overpowering of savagery, leading
to the abandonment of moral thoughts and actions within a person. The beauty of the island is burned
away slowly as the fiery demon of savagery attempts to overwhelm the boys. The beauty of the island
symbolizes the charm of law and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Piggy acts as a conscience when rumors of ghost and monsters are spread, and he ends the gossip by
explaining ghosts are not logical or scientific, meaning they do not exist. Piggy uses his smarts to
make sundials for the boys to keep track of the time, and with Ralph’s combination of leadership, the
two boys begin to form what looks like the beginnings of a civilized camp. Civilization exists in the
children, as they follow Ralph’s initial commands and help build the first shelter. They don not fully
understand why they act civil, but their morals passed on by parents or self growth guide them during
the first portion of the book. Golding uses the combination of Ralph and Piggy to show the roots of
civilization, and the peace that morals bring, and the other boys to show the balance factor of feeling
obligated to act civil. They use law as a protective companion, making rules for only speaking when
holding the conch, to prevent yelling and fights. Jack even shows a civil side to his mind, when first
establishing their camp, crying out, We’ll have rules! Lot’s of rules! (33) The fact that Golding
would show that Jack, the symbol of savagery, has some civil thoughts, indicates that he is conveying
the idea that civilization exists in even the most immoral people. Jack retains a sense of moral
propriety and behavior that society leaves impressed on a person. Rodger, the

An Inside Look at Hazing
As prevalent as hazing is among male college athletes, many people are surprised by the statistics
surroundings this controversial topic. For instance in 1989 1999, of a survey of over 350,000 athletes,
250,000 plus said they had experienced hazing of some sort during their time with their associated
team. One in five of these students experienced potentially illegal hazing including binge drinking,
sexual acts, and destruction and vandalizing of property. Half of these men were involved in drinking
contests or other alcohol related incidents, and only one in five experienced positive initiation
practices such as team trips or team building exercises. When the geography of college campuses was
evaluated, it was found that western and eastern schools participated heavily in alcohol related
initiations, whereas southern and Midwestern campuses had a larger prevalence of dangerous or
potentially illegal rituals (not to say binge drinking isn t dangerous). Clearly hazing amongst athletics
is not just isolated incidents of serious outcomes that happen to make the news due to their outrageous
natures, but is a rampant practice that affects over half of every male athlete in college. Hazing, as
defined by Aldo Cimino (2011) actually makes it different than a ritual or initiation although the
words are commonly interchanged. Hazing is any act that makes a newcomer have to do something
whose cost is not relevant to the normal social order of the group. The example Cimino gives is

How Did The Industrial Revolution Change America
The Industrial Revolution was a pivotal moment in American history as it marked the shift from an
agrarian economy to an industrial. It sparked the growth of communication and transportation sectors.
This allowed the country to become more connected and more efficient. The major changes in
America during this time allowed for economic growth at the state level. The Industrial Revolution
was the key factor in American advancements in communication, transportation, and economic
growth. These upgraded industries propelled us to where we are as a country today. The transition
from an agricultural to an industrial economy took quite some time for America to complete.

Americans can thank the Gilded Age for this, as a lot of new inventions revolving around
communication were put into use and advanced the country one step closer to the modern world we
live in today. The telephone and telegraph were arguably the most significant inventions of the
Industrial Revolution. The telephone made communication more efficient, instead of having to write a
letter and mail it, you could use an invention to speak immediately. Not only did the telegraph make
communication easier as well, it also helped the unity of the nation, people we re able to talk with
each other from different parts of the country easier (www.history.com/topics/industrial revolution).
The telegraph made the standard of living for Americans better. The telegraph made railroads easier to
function at the time, which was extremely important because that meant the shipping of goods and raw
materials could be faster and go be delivered from longer distances, thus this form of communication
boosted the American economy s strength. The telegraph stretched across the continent as did the
railroads, the telephone and typewriter were invented, and a cable was successfully laid across the
atlantic ocean providing quicker and cheaper communication between the continents. (Robert V.
Remini, 172). The radio however, was completely and utterly revolutionary. The radio engaged the
nation on every issue there was, and because of it every american was on page and up to date on what
was going on with the country weather it was politically, athletically, or anything. During the great
depression for example, the president would speak to all of the american people through the radio
reassuring them, telling them all what they needed to do to make sure the country s economy could be
reliable again. The radio made communication more efficient just as the last two inventions, but it
helped business in a

Native American Rock Art History
Native American rock art is a big part of early American history. Most of these fragments of history
were destroyed and lost to the public due to vandalism, mass settlement and colonization, and man
made things like dams. The history of the rock art is incredibly fascinating. I was very interested in the
National History Day Fair last year, and I found out about it fairly late. I decided to try to enter it. I
made a documentary and process paper before finding out that I was past the due date. This year, I was
determined to try. I was thinking of several topics to do my project on, like Malala, World War I, The
Berlin Wall, and The Treaty of Velasco/independence of Texas. But when I saw the theme, I knew
exactly what to do for my presentation.

Essay on Hawaiian Navigation
Hawaiian Navigation
How did the Polynesians find their way to Hawaii, over two thousand miles from any other land? Was
it over population at home, or political turmoil? Whatever reason for leaving these people used
amazing knowledge and skill of the ocean and of the sky to navigate them to this new land. They
faced the unknown and braved into the wide open ocean for long periods of time. The real focus in
this paper is on the navigation techniques that they used in these voyages throughout the Pacific.
It s impossible to teach someone the significance or the act of loving the stars and the ocean but that s
what makes navigation without instruments (wayfinding) so beautiful. One can give the heavens a

Then in the 1980 s came the voyages of rediscovery navigated by Nainoa Thompson from Hawaii to
Tahiti and from Tahiti back to Hawaii. Thompson was the first Hawaiian to sail this route in over 500
years. The voyages in between took the Hokule a (some 16000 miles) to the Society Islands, Cook
Islands, New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa and back home via Aitutaki, Tahiti, Rangiroa in the Tuamotu
Archipelago (Baybayan, Kawaharada, 1996). The Hokule a became the symbol of pride in Polynesian
heritage that links all the people of Polynesia together.
In the 1990 s there were more voyages to Marquesan Islands and from the West Coast of the United
States up to Alaska. This is when education became the focus of the voyages of the Hokule a. They
then built the Hawaiilo a, another Polynesian voyaging canoe, this one made of traditional materials.
The Hawaiilo a added to the curiosity and the revival of culture throughout the world. The natives of

knowledge. Now all cultures worldwide can help each other save the past and use it for the future.

How To Make College Cheaper Analysis
In the article, How to Make College Cheaper, Steve Cohen discusses how an average income family
cannot afford the typical university or community college tuition. He describes key ideas on how to
make college more readily available the average student in American. Although, in the article Steve
Cohen uses some ambiguous language in his key reasons the conclusion to his issue is very
convincing.
In Steve Cohen article, How to Make College Cheaper, he clearly states the issue and the conclusion.
The descriptive issue is stated in the title, Why or How to Make College Cheaper. Cohen states the
conclusion later on in the article in the concluding paragraph. The conclusion is to invest in tuition
deferment and by shifting the risk of student default from the government to the college. Thus, the
issue and the conclusion could be stated as follows: College can be made cheaper by tuition deferment
and shifting risk of student default to the college. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cohen uses these additives to get his points across. I was not really sure if he is trying to be theatrical
or more accurate. If Cohen used more accurate additives his points would be more substantial. Instead
of using the word traditional to describe loan programs I suggest Cohen briefly describes one. This
would make it much easier for people to understand if they were unfamiliar with college loan
programs.
I found the conclusion and issue of How to Make College Cheaper to be convincing. Although, there
were some ambiguities in Steve Cohen s reasoning they did not affect my opinion on the article.
Cohen does get his points across very well with the facts he uses throughout the article. The reasons
are very convincing because he uses reputable sources such as the President of the United States and
the Governor of Wisconsin. I need a sentence for

Other observations were made regarding the nearby stars GJ667A and GJ667B. The age of these two
stars were estimated to be between 2 10 billion years old, thus GJ667C was similar in age. The mass

eccentric orbit of 0.27. The boundaries were determined for the zone where liquid water could exist on
an Earth like planet and planet c was found within that boundary. The data was also compared to
known limits that make Venus uninhabitable and Mars habitable. The ultimate capability to support
liquid water depends on other properties that are not known. There needs to be more studies on
climate and geological models to assess chances of supporting life on this Earth like planet. Finally,
there were more observations of signals with longer periods but the data had poor fits and were
unstable on time scales, so they were not used.

Why We Should Not Raise Active Screen Time
In many ways I m a normal teenager. One way i m not a normal teenager is I play too many video
games. In fact after school I play 1 or 2 video games. During school if i have time I play games on my
phone. I think from all the videogames I play that my grades have dropped some not much but a little.
If we go over the amount of screen time then it could affect us later in life. If we have too much screen
time then the prefrontal cortex won t tell us if something is bad or good because the prefrontal is not
developed fully. The American Academy of Pediatrics should not raise the recommended screen time
from 2 to 4 hours. Your prefrontal cortex isn t fully developed until you re 20, so if you re online you
can make more bad decisions. The prefrontal cortex matures later than other parts of your brain so you
could make bad decisions(Scholastic). If your prefrontal cortex matures later than you will make more
bad decisions. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The AAP should not raise the active screen time from 2 to 4. Neurons are another reason why we
should not raise the screen time. Neurons help us make decisions. In order for your brain to make
decisions, tiny specialized cells talk with each other through a series of neurotransmitters like a circuit
in a computer(Scholastic). If the tiny cells don t talk then we could make a bad decision online. White
matter is called myelin, and it coats the neurons and makes them communicate more effectively to
make the connection better, the axons wrap themselves in myelin through a process called
myelination(Knox). If we play too many video games or have too much screen time than are
communication could become worse and we could make more mistakes online. The neurons are
another reason why we should raise the screen time. Neurons will make us make bad decisions online

Themes of Hipocrisy in ‘Tartuffe’ by Moliere
Hypocrisy as a common theme throughout literature has often been advocated by the author s use of
concealing the true characteristics or meaning of the character. Tartuffe by Moliere is an amazing neo
classical drama, where it portrays the contradictory relationship between appearance and reality in
terms of hypocrisy. In one hand, Tartuffe, the religious hypocrite, who always wears a false mask of
untrue righteousness to deceive others around him, on the other hand in reality he turns out to be the
falsifier. Despite Tartuffe is treacherous in his undertakings and manages to deceive some people,
however he cannot help but reveals his true nature/characteristics whenever he is confronted by
sincere individuals. In another sense, he fails to realize that there are at least some people who has the
right knowledge and will be able to identify his true instinct. I believe by using Tartuffe as a model of
religious hypocrite , Moliere superbly demonstrates the logic that although the inherent tendency of a
hypocrite is to manipulate others with his deceitful virtue, yet he will only be able to misguide
individuals, who are insincere and unwise.
From one hand, a hypocrite is easily capable of manipulating the one, who does not have sincerity or
who is inattentive with his/her personal dealings. According to the play, Tartuffe manages to impress
Orgon by showing off his piety (Act 1, scene 5, line 36 40) and his generosity as an alms giver (Act 1,
scene 5, line 55). I believe

It meant a lot to me to have my papers turn out well. I tried hard and I wanted my work to be

Francis Bacon Research Paper
Many people have heard of the mathematicians Issac Newton, John Locke, or William Petty. All of
these mathematicians changed history with their groundbreaking ideas and methods. However, all of
these mathematicians were influenced by the mathematician, Francis Bacon. Bacon was influential in
many aspects during the English Renaissance. He was an author, philosopher, scientist,
mathematician, and served as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. Francis Bacon had a
successful life, not only in the progress he made in science and math, but also other achievements he
made. Francis Bacon was born in London, England on January 22, 1561. He was born into a high
class family with his father, Nicolas Bacon, being the Lord Keeper of the Seal. His mother, Anne
Bacon, was also the daughter of Edwards VI s tutor. At first Bacon was homeschooled where he was
taught the works of famous philosophers and scientists. Due to his family s wealth, at the age of
twelve, Bacon was able to attend Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1573. There, he met Queen Elizabeth,
who was astounded by his intelligence. Then, in 1576, Bacon attended law school at the Honorable
Society of Gray s Inn. From there, he studied at the English Embassy in Paris where he learned
valuable political advice. Bacon s goal was to become as well versed in politics as possible, which
brought him all over Europe. Eventually, Bacon was studying languages, civil law, and statecraft
while working for the English Ambassador.

The Works Of The Renaissance Period
The artist I chose to write my descriptive criticism about is Michelangelo Buonarroti. I chose him
because his style as an artist intrigues me and I wanted to get myself involved with more of his work.
Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy in 1475 and died in Rome, Italy 1564 but buried in Florence .
He is a well known sculptor painter, architect, and poet whom never married. The artist had many
great works but there will be three in particular that has caught my eye that will be the focus of this
paper. All of the pieces that I will be discussing are a part of the Renaissance period . The first piece
that I will focus on is called Pieta (1499) in St.Peter s Basilica. This is a sculpture of what seems to be
the virgin Mary and Jesus after he was crucified. This sculpture is a piece that was unique to me. As I
looked at this piece it seemed in away almost life like but the way he sculpted Mary was bueatifully
done. You can see the expression on her face and even the look of her garments that she wore were
very detailed. I noticed the way this painting has a triangular approach. If u look from the top of her
head where her veil starts to flow all the way to the floor or the feet of her son Jesus that is in the
shape of the triangle. The picture shows so much emotion. It shows Jesus lifeless in his mothers arms.
You can see fine details even little nail marks in his side. Exactly what does this sculpture portray I do

Heroic Qualities Of Odysseus
Homer s epic poem The Odyssey begins by painting Odysseus as a brave and powerful leader and an
impulsive decision maker who over time becomes more intelligent; Homer develops these relatable
and heroic characteristics through detailed imagery and word choice as well as through symbols and
homeric similes which amplify the representation of Odysseus as a normal person as well as a heroic
figure. Odysseus s tendency to succumb to impulsive strokes of curiosity enables readers to relate with
his inner character. The protagonist gives into the natural human curiosity to find and fix one s
weakness. Circe tells him of the sirens who know the secrets of Odysseus s weakness, she also tells
him that listening to their knowledge is unwise and he along with his crew should close their ears.
However, in his impulsivity, Odysseus actually tells his crew to force him to listen while they cover
their ears. Odysseus also shows his impulses in regards to thirst for knowledge when he sends two
scouts to explore the land of the Lotus Eaters, knowing full well that their chance of return is unlikely.
This quest for knowledge could have been in a slower, but more logical and effective way. This shows
how Odysseus can easily succumb to less logical ideas if it is a question of his power or knowledge.
Another constant in his early story is his portrayal as a daring and fearless figure, often taking control
and triumphing over potential threats. Odysseus witnesses two of his shipmates be

Conflict And Social Behavior Perspective
Introduction This paper will show how conflict and social behavior perspective play an important role
in Dasani s life (Hutchinson, 2015). The reader will have a better understanding of the perspective
through examples in Dasani s life. This paper will conclude with a reflection of the writer s future
profession in the social work field.
Conflict Perspective Defined Conflict perspective is seen through the lens of someone who has power
and seeks to oppress people with less power, sometime through discrimination or control (Hutchinson,
2015). Individuals who are not in the social work field would automatically assume that the conflict
involves a dispute between two individuals. An issue with conflict perspective is that it has the ...

Within this perspective, there are three theories that describe different ways in which learning occurs;
classical conditioning theory, operant conditioning theory, and cognitive social learning theory
(Hutchinson, 2015). Classical conditioning is often associated with physiologist Ivan Pavlov s
experiment with the salivating dog (Hutchinson, 2015). This experiment focused on conditioning the
dog to associate food with the bell while salivating, and eventually salivates when the bell is rung
even without the presence of food. Operant conditioning theory is changed behavior as the result of a
reinforcement (Hutchinson, 2015). In our society, we associate positive reinforcements with
compliments, smiles, high fives in order to encourage a behavior more. Negative reinforcement
involves jail, detention, and grounding, and this is to stop a behavior from continuing. A cognitive
social learning theory states that behavior can be learned through observations, beliefs, expectations,
and imitation of others (Hutchinson, 2015). A major difference between cognitive social learning
theory and the others, is a lack of manipulation to encourage the individual to follow through with a
behavior. Rather, cognitive social learning theories suggest that a change in thinking can ultimately
result in a change in behavior (Hutchinson, 2015).
Dasani s conflict Perspective A reoccurring conflict throughout this case assessment is the mayor s
ignorance to the policies that he is

Economic Crisis
Stabilization in the Wake of Economic Crisis Perhaps the most significant reason Pittsburgh was able
to recover from the collapse of steel was the decision, made early on by city officials and local
developers, to seek out new industries rather than cling to the vestiges of the old. Beginning in 1981,
the Allegheny Conference (ACC), a non profit coalition of local business and political leaders, made
economic diversification their primary goal. The conference established a committee whose sole task
was to promote new industries. The committee s chairman said, at the outset, we must diversify...this
time we must build new industries, new jobs. Over the next decade, the ACC helped secure financing

Symbolic of the success of that initiative, in 1990, Pittsburgh succeeded in capturing a $370 M
investment in from the Sony Corporation to build their two newest television manufacturing plants.
Overall, these measures to stabilize Pittsburgh s economy were remarkably successful. Between 1982
and 1990, Pittsburgh s employment rate dropped 12.6% (from 17% to 4.6%). For the remainder of the
decade, the unemployment rate hovered ±0.5% compared to the national average. Thus, the successes
of the late 1980s gave Pittsburgh had the breathing room to pursue longer lasting, economically
sustainable reform. New Pittsburgh (1986 Present) Much of the success of the mid/late 1980s were the
result of massive economic stimulation measures rather than organic growth. Therefore, after the city
recovered from the collapse of the early 1980s, city officials and local developers continued their
plans for further economic development. City officials used the successes of the late 1980s as a
springboard to create the highly diversified economy necessary for sustained economic growth. Since
1990, the focus of economic growth in Pittsburgh has been in three largely codependent sectors:

After the Clown Street message and the heavy discussion with his mother, Ed gains an understanding of why their relationship is so broken. This leads ED into a better situation with his mother and overall the love he has been asking and craving for from his mother, even if its not the traditional love we would expect between a mother and son. My heart is so tired , Ed says to himself after trying and trying to win over Audrey, this quote shows us how much Ed has tried and tried to love but Audrey wouldn t except it. Violence: Violence plays a big role, starting with the bank robbery. Ed will and did face a lot of violence from Edgar street, the rose brothers, the sledge match, Daryl and Keith, an as readers we are quite aware that all of these obstacles have shaped and changed Ed s life mostly for the better. • 4. Magical Realism In Gabriel Garcia Marquez Kids taken from mothers, people stripped of their cultures, and families separated. Latin American people have gone through burdens unimaginable to other, more developed, countries around the world. Latin America has a very distinct culture, but that culture was stripped from the people and replaced with another culture. Latin America s diverse culture shows in its use of magical realism and their intriguing ways of telling history. Magical realism is used to represent the mistreated figures and atrocious leaders in their literature. One of these writers is Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Born in Aracataca, Colombia this latino writer used magical realism in his stories to represent the conditions in Latin America. He uses characters in his stories to represent Latin America and how the countries people are treated. Gabriel originally went to school to be a lawyer, but later gave that up to be a journalist. His short stories and inspirational speeches were awarded the Nobel Prize of Literature and the International Literature Award. Although Latin America was beaten down, they still persevered. They gained their independence and started to become the great country they once were. Like Gabriel said in his speech, The Solitude of Latin America, Nevertheless, in the face of oppression, pillage, and abandonment, our reply is life. • 7. Use of language and Word Choice in My Last Duchess Essay My Last Duchess by Robert Browning is a dramatic monologue in which the Duke of Ferrara is discussing the matter of a dowry with an emissary sent by a Count. The use of dramatic monologue allows the poet to subtly reveal the personality of the persona to the reader. The language used by the speaker allows the poet to evoke strong emotions in the reader. The reader is given an early insight into the personality of the Duke in the very first line of the monologue: That s my last Duchess painted on the wall This early impression portrays the Duke as a very sophisticated man with a wealth of knowledge in art. This impression is continued when he mentions the very artist who painted the Duchess, Fra Pandolf . However, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This manner is not only continued, but emphasised further still when the Duke reverts to the subject of money, discussing the situation with the dowry . This shows how superficial and indeed shameful a person the Duke is. This shameful personality is brought out further still by the poet s use of rhyme and rhythm, the very heart of the poem. The poet s use of style represents the Duke himself the poem has many example of rhyme, for example Paint and Faint and, Durst and First this would suggest that the persona was articulate. However, this is shown to be nothing more than a façade in the way in which the lines of the poem run together, showing that the poet is not as skilled in language as he would like to make out: but/thanked/Somehow The Duke here is seen to be struggling to express himself, showing his lack of skill in language and emphasising that he has tried to create a false impression of himself. Even the rhythm of the poem, iambic pentameter, which is very regular and basic, reflects the simplicity of the speaker himself, in terms of his linguistic ability. The manner in which the Duke tries to cover up this limited ability emphasises his superficiality. However, it is the poet s clever use of word choice which is most effective in revealing the Duke s personality. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Ethics and Morality in Vegetarianism The assumption that animals are without rights, and the illusion that their treatment has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality. (Schopenhauer). I always wondered why some people are not so drawn to the consumption of meat and fed up with only one thought about it. An ancient Greek philosopher and scientist Pythagoras was convinced that whoever kills an animal without any remorse can easily kill a man. Other philosophers were even more straightforward and indicated that cruelty to animals leads to wars. It leads me to believe that the attitude towards animals is not something we can merely write off as a showcase of the innate cruelty of man , but an indicator of our society s ethical level. If more people become aware of the suffering and death of animals that we, as a people, have caused, and acknowledge it, it would be a small, but significant sign of moral growth. Although moral principles have gained increasing recognition due to their usefulness for the society, i.e. for pragmatic reasons, the evolution of ethics had different roots psychological and spiritual. It is based on the person s ability for empathy: which is the basis of moral behavior of a person, his kindness, and decency. It can be argued that the ability for empathy separates man from the world of animals. With the development of spirituality and feelings of compassion, people began to feel uncomfortable by the fact that their actions were constantly associated with the infliction of suffering to other beings, and even their death. Even in ancient times, high minds have concluded that man, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We often believe these scientists, but is there actually a reason for us to trust what they are passing on to us? What would science be if they had not been telling the truth? There is no denying the existence of public trust in the words of scientists, but it should be noted that everything that we understand as scientific fact today would be in question if we lost trust in our scientists. And if so, is being virtuous and moral enough of a reason for us to confirm our trust in the reliability and authority of science? Could it not be the case that scientists are seen as ordinary people possessing extraordinary knowledge as a result of their job title or description? The fact that we have this widespread trust of science proves that we must believe to have an understanding of what scientists are like. There has been a long going development of a public image of scientists, one that has recently begun to change. Due to factors such as the internet and the media, science is something that is able to been seen and looked into simultaneously by numerous people. When a scientist intentionally fudges their data, it is not small news. Problems of this sort have birthed various concerns about science, and about science s authority and reliability in specific. This speculation of dishonest scientists not only will effect the reliability of science in the eyes of the public, but also the realm in which scientists are producing truly credible knowledge. Our technical knowledge is only as secure as the moral economy in which it is produced (Shapin, ?). As of now, the way in which scientists come to agree or settle disputes, is an issue that we cannot fully grasp. One of the major effects of the Columbian exchange was the decimation of the Native American population. His concept is called the Malthusian Law, which states that the population will increase geometrically while the food supply will increase arithmetically. This, simply put, means that the population will grow enormously faster than the food supply will. Predictably, this leads to starvation and death. Disease, as a natural check, prevents this from happening. As the population is checked, the supply of food can keep up with the growth of population, keeping the ecosystem balanced. Civilization exists in the children, as they follow Ralph’s initial commands and help build the first shelter. They don not fully understand why they act civil, but their morals passed on by parents or self growth guide them during the first portion of the book. Golding uses the combination of Ralph and Piggy to show the roots of civilization, and the peace that morals bring, and the other boys to show the balance factor of feeling obligated to act civil. Jack even shows a civil side to his mind, when first establishing their camp, crying out, We’ll have rules! Lot’s of rules! For instance in 1989 1999, of a survey of over 350,000 athletes, 250,000 plus said they had experienced hazing of some sort during their time with their associated team. One in five of these students experienced potentially illegal hazing including binge drinking, sexual acts, and destruction and vandalizing of property. Half of these men were involved in drinking contests or other alcohol related incidents, and only one in five experienced positive initiation practices such as team trips or team building exercises. Whether it was a basketball game, she was there ,my fourth grade talent show, she was there, or the second grade spelling bee championship, she was there. I knew whenever I looked into the crowd with butterflies in my stomach staring back at me, I would always see a familiar woman bedazzled with colored necklaces and wearing about five sweaters, bearing a jubilant grin. In particular, one memory that has stuck with me over the years is listening to reggae and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The orbital data for this star showed a slightly eccentric orbit of 0.27. The boundaries were determined for the zone where liquid water could exist on an Earth like planet and planet c was found within that boundary. The data was also compared to known limits that make Venus uninhabitable and Mars habitable. The ultimate capability to support liquid water depends on other properties that are not known. There needs to be more studies on climate and geological models to assess chances of supporting life on this Earth like planet. Finally, there were more observations of signals with longer periods but the data had poor fits and were unstable on time scales, so they were not used. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 30. Why We Should Not Raise Active Screen Time In many ways I m a normal teenager. One way i m not a normal teenager is I play too many video games. In fact after school I play 1 or 2 video games. During school if i have time I play games on my phone. I think from all the videogames I play that my grades have dropped some not much but a little. If we go over the amount of screen time then it could affect us later in life. If we have too much screen time then the prefrontal cortex won t tell us if something is bad or good because the prefrontal is not developed fully. The American Academy of Pediatrics should not raise the recommended screen time from 2 to 4 hours. Your prefrontal cortex isn t fully developed until you re 20, so if you re online you can make more bad decisions. • 31. Themes of Hipocrisy in ‘Tartuffe’ by Moliere Hypocrisy as a common theme throughout literature has often been advocated by the author s use of concealing the true characteristics or meaning of the character. Tartuffe by Moliere is an amazing neo classical drama, where it portrays the contradictory relationship between appearance and reality in terms of hypocrisy. In one hand, Tartuffe, the religious hypocrite, who always wears a false mask of untrue righteousness to deceive others around him, on the other hand in reality he turns out to be the falsifier. Despite Tartuffe is treacherous in his undertakings and manages to deceive some people, however he cannot help but reveals his true nature/characteristics whenever he is confronted by sincere individuals. In another sense, he fails to realize that there are at least some people who has the right knowledge and will be able to identify his true instinct. I believe by using Tartuffe as a model of religious hypocrite , Moliere superbly demonstrates the logic that although the inherent tendency of a hypocrite is to manipulate others with his deceitful virtue, yet he will only be able to misguide individuals, who are insincere and unwise. From one hand, a hypocrite is easily capable of manipulating the one, who does not have sincerity or who is inattentive with his/her personal dealings. According to the play, Tartuffe manages to impress Orgon by showing off his piety (Act 1, scene 5, line 36 40) and his generosity as an alms giver (Act 1, scene 5, line 55). I believe ... • 32. My Favorite Teacher Helped Me Get Over My Ex Essay At the end of my freshman year of high school, my boyfriend broke up with me. He was the only boyfriend I had ever had and I was completely devastated. I had always written a little on my own and had been good in English classes, but I never wrote as much as I did that summer. I was hurt, angry, and feeling incredibly insecure. Writing was my salvation. It was the only way I had to express my feelings because I did not really have anyone to talk to about my feelings and concerns. For the entire summer, I moped around and wrote depressing poems constantly. I was miserable. When school started again, I was not very happy about it at all. It meant a lot to me to have my papers turn out well. I tried hard and I wanted my work to be considered good. These papers were written about my life and me working out my own problems so I wanted them to be well written and reflected truly how I felt. I wanted Mrs. F to appreciate my work as well. A lot of the pieces I was writing were still very angry and personal, so I was very insecure about what other people would think about my writing. To my surprise, the teacher and the other students who had to critique my work did appreciate and understand what I was trying to articulate. I wrote poems about melting Barbie dolls and my struggles dealing with not being popular and how I could accept that part of my life, rather than just feeling bad about it the entire time. I was surprised that I kept getting really good grades. The comments Mrs. F wrote on my papers were so supportive of what I was trying to accomplish and of me as a writer, that the little confidence I had grew. I felt more comfortable to try new things and experiment in my writing. She would write a comment about a character in one of my stories and end up complimenting me in some way. On my final exam she wrote The character has a lot of reality to her, an interesting combination of intelligence, sensitivity, and self doubt (like the author?). • 33. Francis Bacon Research Paper Many people have heard of the mathematicians Issac Newton, John Locke, or William Petty. All of these mathematicians changed history with their groundbreaking ideas and methods. However, all of these mathematicians were influenced by the mathematician, Francis Bacon. Bacon was influential in many aspects during the English Renaissance. He was an author, philosopher, scientist, mathematician, and served as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. Francis Bacon had a successful life, not only in the progress he made in science and math, but also other achievements he made. Francis Bacon was born in London, England on January 22, 1561. He was born into a high class family with his father, Nicolas Bacon, being the Lord Keeper of the Seal. His mother, Anne Bacon, was also the daughter of Edwards VI s tutor. At first Bacon was homeschooled where he was taught the works of famous philosophers and scientists. Due to his family s wealth, at the age of twelve, Bacon was able to attend Trinity College, Cambridge, in 1573. There, he met Queen Elizabeth, who was astounded by his intelligence. Then, in 1576, Bacon attended law school at the Honorable Society of Gray s Inn. From there, he studied at the English Embassy in Paris where he learned valuable political advice. Bacon s goal was to become as well versed in politics as possible, which brought him all over Europe. Eventually, Bacon was studying languages, civil law, and statecraft while working for the English Ambassador. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. The Works Of The Renaissance Period The artist I chose to write my descriptive criticism about is Michelangelo Buonarroti. I chose him because his style as an artist intrigues me and I wanted to get myself involved with more of his work. Michelangelo was born in Caprese, Italy in 1475 and died in Rome, Italy 1564 but buried in Florence . He is a well known sculptor painter, architect, and poet whom never married. The artist had many great works but there will be three in particular that has caught my eye that will be the focus of this paper. All of the pieces that I will be discussing are a part of the Renaissance period . The first piece that I will focus on is called Pieta (1499) in St.Peter s Basilica. This is a sculpture of what seems to be the virgin Mary and Jesus after he was crucified. This sculpture is a piece that was unique to me. As I looked at this piece it seemed in away almost life like but the way he sculpted Mary was bueatifully done. You can see the expression on her face and even the look of her garments that she wore were very detailed. I noticed the way this painting has a triangular approach. If u look from the top of her head where her veil starts to flow all the way to the floor or the feet of her son Jesus that is in the shape of the triangle. The picture shows so much emotion. It shows Jesus lifeless in his mothers arms. You can see fine details even little nail marks in his side. Exactly what does this sculpture portray I do not know but I do know that just from ... • 36. Heroic Qualities Of Odysseus Homer s epic poem The Odyssey begins by painting Odysseus as a brave and powerful leader and an impulsive decision maker who over time becomes more intelligent; Homer develops these relatable and heroic characteristics through detailed imagery and word choice as well as through symbols and homeric similes which amplify the representation of Odysseus as a normal person as well as a heroic figure. Odysseus s tendency to succumb to impulsive strokes of curiosity enables readers to relate with his inner character. The protagonist gives into the natural human curiosity to find and fix one s weakness. Circe tells him of the sirens who know the secrets of Odysseus s weakness, she also tells him that listening to their knowledge is unwise and he along with his crew should close their ears. However, in his impulsivity, Odysseus actually tells his crew to force him to listen while they cover their ears. Odysseus also shows his impulses in regards to thirst for knowledge when he sends two scouts to explore the land of the Lotus Eaters, knowing full well that their chance of return is unlikely. This quest for knowledge could have been in a slower, but more logical and effective way. This shows how Odysseus can easily succumb to less logical ideas if it is a question of his power or knowledge. Another constant in his early story is his portrayal as a daring and fearless figure, often taking control and triumphing over potential threats. Odysseus witnesses two of his shipmates be ... • 37. Conflict And Social Behavior Perspective Introduction This paper will show how conflict and social behavior perspective play an important role in Dasani s life (Hutchinson, 2015). The reader will have a better understanding of the perspective through examples in Dasani s life. This paper will conclude with a reflection of the writer s future profession in the social work field. Conflict Perspective Defined Conflict perspective is seen through the lens of someone who has power and seeks to oppress people with less power, sometime through discrimination or control (Hutchinson, 2015). Individuals who are not in the social work field would automatically assume that the conflict involves a dispute between two individuals. An issue with conflict perspective is that it has the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within this perspective, there are three theories that describe different ways in which learning occurs; classical conditioning theory, operant conditioning theory, and cognitive social learning theory (Hutchinson, 2015). Classical conditioning is often associated with physiologist Ivan Pavlov s experiment with the salivating dog (Hutchinson, 2015). This experiment focused on conditioning the dog to associate food with the bell while salivating, and eventually salivates when the bell is rung even without the presence of food. Operant conditioning theory is changed behavior as the result of a reinforcement (Hutchinson, 2015). In our society, we associate positive reinforcements with compliments, smiles, high fives in order to encourage a behavior more. Negative reinforcement involves jail, detention, and grounding, and this is to stop a behavior from continuing. A cognitive social learning theory states that behavior can be learned through observations, beliefs, expectations, and imitation of others (Hutchinson, 2015). A major difference between cognitive social learning theory and the others, is a lack of manipulation to encourage the individual to follow through with a behavior. Rather, cognitive social learning theories suggest that a change in thinking can ultimately result in a change in behavior (Hutchinson, 2015). • 38. Economic Crisis Stabilization in the Wake of Economic Crisis Perhaps the most significant reason Pittsburgh was able to recover from the collapse of steel was the decision, made early on by city officials and local developers, to seek out new industries rather than cling to the vestiges of the old. Beginning in 1981, the Allegheny Conference (ACC), a non profit coalition of local business and political leaders, made economic diversification their primary goal. The conference established a committee whose sole task was to promote new industries. The committee s chairman said, at the outset, we must diversify...this time we must build new industries, new jobs. For the remainder of the decade, the unemployment rate hovered ±0.5% compared to the national average. Thus, the successes of the late 1980s gave Pittsburgh had the breathing room to pursue longer lasting, economically sustainable reform. New Pittsburgh (1986 Present) Much of the success of the mid/late 1980s were the result of massive economic stimulation measures rather than organic growth. Therefore, after the city recovered from the collapse of the early 1980s, city officials and local developers continued their plans for further economic development. City officials used the successes of the late 1980s as a springboard to create the highly diversified economy necessary for sustained economic growth.
