An Analysis of the Business Environments of Initech and...
In business today, the environment of work and management has become far more complex than at
the start of the previous century. This is the result of not only technological and communication
advances, but also because of an increasing focus on employee satisfaction and motivation. Hence,
companies that wish to reduce employee turnover while increasing employee motivation are
generally also those that see an increase in customer satisfaction and loyalty. When considering the
business environments of Initech and the Coffee Bean, it is clear that the respective managers have
vastly different ways of ensuring the effective function of business.
Peter Gibbons, an employee at Initech Corporation, for example, appears to tend towards
performance in terms of achievement orientation (Kozlowski and Bell, n.d., p.7). For Peter, task
completion is of primary importance. In other words, completing tasks is the basis of meaning he
derives from his work. He reason for this orientation is the way in which the management of the
company and its employees is set up. Peter operates from a basis of fear: Fear of being reprimanded
by eight different bosses and fear of losing his job. There is therefore no meaning for Peter besides
completing the tasks assigned to him. He completes them only to avoid unpleasant consequences,
rather than to achieve the company's goals or to learn skills in order to advance in his work.
Since Peter's motivation is currently based only upon avoiding negative

A commodity is an exchangeable good/material that is both bought and sold freely as an item of
commerce. Commodities originate their value from human labor, yet, notably in the Western world,
they are passed back and forth without concern or notice. They gather in masses in brand name
grocery stores and shops, but their point of origin and cultivation is unknown; as such, they are only
seen as items to be purchased, sold, and consumed. Living in a capitalistic society, we are unaware
of the "mysterious origins" of our everyday products, and therefore, unable to see the symbolic and

Description
This science fair project was performed to find out the effect on plant growth of adding caffeine to
the soil. The experiment was done by using mung bean plants and watering them daily with water,
water mixed with caffeine and with a coffee mixture.
Hypothesis
The mung beans watered using the coffee mixture will grow the fastest.
Overview
Caffeine and plant growth
The effect of adding caffeine to the soil and its effect on plant growth is a subject that has been
studied for quite some time. Some plants seem to benefit and grow faster when caffeine is added to
the soil, while others seem to become stunted or grow slower. There are also some plants that are not

The Magical Bean: Coffee
Coffee has been part of our everyday life for centuries. It is said that Kaldi, a habitant and goatherd
of the Ethiopian highlands, centuries ago, noticed that his goats, upon eating the fruits from a certain
tree, became so energetic that they did not sleep that night. After this, Kaldi reported his discovery
to the abbot of the local monastery. They then decided to make a drink using that "fruit" (coffee
beans) and discovered that it enabled them to stay alert for long hours. What they did not know was
that this "juice" would later be called coffee and that it would be drunk worldwide for the upcoming
centuries due to its energy boosting effect. But why is it that coffee has this effect?
Coffee is made up of many constituents, these being: caffeine, trigonelline, carbohydrates,
chlorogenic acids, lipids, amino acids, organic acids, melanoidins, volatile aroma, ash and others
that are unknown. Only one of these components is the reason to why coffee contains the energetic
effect that so many people seek. This component is caffeine.
Caffeine's molecular formula is, C8H10N4O2, and therefore it has eight carbon atoms, ten hydrogen
atoms, four nitrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms. It is formed by covalent bonds and double bonds
(when atoms share two electrons among them) between non–metals
(Figure 1).
Hydrogen's electronic configuration is 1s1, Carbon's electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p2,
Nitrogen's electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 3p3 and Oxygen's electronic

Galla Research Paper
The news of the coffee berries spread. In western Europe, the Galla tribe had heard about these
fragrant, berries and mixed them with ghee, a type of fat, to preserve them from spoiling, pressing
the mixture into a ball, the berry balls were easier to carry with them. The weary warriors marched
into battle with their snack, and the first power bar was created. Traders from Arab while doing
business in Europe, heard the news of the berries wrapped in ghee, and tried them, they agreed with
those before them. The traders returned to their homeland, excited to share the news. When the
traders shared the news with the citizens of Arab. They decided to cultivated the plant for the first
time on farmland.. They enjoyed the brew created by boiling the beans in water, and called it
"qahwa" or that which prevents sleep.
The Arabs had another term for qahwa, its "kahwah" and is one of many words they used for wine.
In the process of stripping the coffee bean's outer cherry–like flesh, a pulp is left behind. When a
coffee berry bush is harvested, they let the unripe cherries remain on the tree to ripen and be
harvested at another time. A ripe coffee berry is determined by gently squeezing the fruit. If ripe, it
will be soft and give under the pressure. Ripe coffee cherries will also be bright red and glossy in
color. A common way to harvest them, was by spreading a netting or sheet on the ground to catch

Coffee and Climate Change
Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. Americans consume about 400 million cups of
coffee per day. That is 4629.6 cups of coffee every second. Coffee beans can also be used in many
other ways. It is used in culinary arts, fragrance uses, and even health benefits. For instance, coffee
is used to prevent Parkinson's disease, gallstones, and type 2 diabetes. Coffee is something that
many people depend on. Some depend on it for its natural caffeine, practical uses, and health
benefits, others for an income. Needless to say, that it is very important to millions of people around
the world. Coffee is an important commodity to many people and climate change is negatively
affecting the production of coffee to a point where it may go extinct in the next century, impacting
an estimated 120 million people.
Coffee is a plant that is grown and harvested for its beans. Coffee Beans are the seeds of berries
from the Coffea plant. It is native to tropical Africa but is now grown in about 70 countries around
the world. There is evidence suggesting that coffee could have been consumed as early as the 15th
century in Yemen in southern Arabia.
Coffea is harvested by being picked from the tree by either selective picking or strip picking.
Selective picking is picking only the mature fruits from the tree, while Strip picking is picking all of
the fruit from the tree whether it is

Once the goods have arrived from there Auckland based suppliers and into their storeroom it is
important for Cathy to consistently match together the purchase order, packing slip and invoice this
way it will help ensure that the orders have been made correctly by ordering what was needed
(purchase order) , whatever was received by the suppliers is exactly what was ordered (packing slip)
, in addition ensuring that whatever has been paid for is what was received (invoice). This will
ensure that all customers will have the best products . At the end of the accounting period this can
ensure that Coffee Call will have a high profit figure
using purchase orders or payment vouchers:
When using purchase orders it is important that all forms are to be pre–numbered therefore this
helps ensure that all the forms are accounted for as well as have not been used to order other goods
that was not authorized by Coffee Call. This also provides a reference number for Coffee Call
making it easier for them to refer to these documents at a later point in time. The purchase order

My Life At Dunkin ' Donuts '
From the Ground to My Cup
I was struggling to find a research topic that affected my day to day life while also being plant

college student and far from a morning person. Second, I work at Dunkin ' Donuts. Lastly, I
consume it 6 days a week. Coffee plays a huge role in my life. As I approached my research, I
thought I would start with what I know: the coffee bean. Right away, I learned that coffea (scientific
name) is a type of flowering plant. It is a part of the Rubiaceae family and can be spotted by its
simple, opposite leaves and interpetiolar stipules. These plants are natives of Southern Africa and
tropical Asia. What most of us know as "coffee beans" are coffee seeds and it is what we use to
make coffee.
Even though a "coffee bean" could be easily recognized, it might be more difficult to spot a coffee
tree. Coffee seeds work well when they are planted in large, shaded beds. After the seeds begin to
sprout, they are replanted in individual plots. They are usually planted in the wet season because the
plant needs the moisture. Coffee trees are covered with waxy, green leaves that produce white
flowers. Those flowers will die after a few days and small cherries will begin to grow. They will turn
continue to change colors as they grow. Depending on its variety and care, a coffee tree can produce
fruit for a long time. "The tree of Coffea Arabica will grow fruits after

So our brain goes on its cheerful path, driving out natural stimulants like glutamate to keep us
functioning. In the brain the reaction to caffeine is comparable to what happens when we meet a
spider. The pituitary is unclear about the actions of the adenosine receptors, gets scared, and begins
giving out adrenaline. Your muscles stiffen, you feel enthusiastic and your heart beats loud. As soon

Long Tem Surplus Plan * Freeze hiring and when an employee leaves do not replacement them. *
Reduce workforce by laying off one store manager, one part–time and one full–time employee. *

Outline a strategy for workforce diversity. The first workforce diversity strategy is opening
recruiting to the largest demographic group possible (Heneman III et al., 2012). Since Cool Beans
Coffee Café is located next to a college campus, job postings should be posted in central locations
around the college campus to gain the most visibility. Also post job opening for coffee baristas at
local culinary art schools because there is a wide array of ethnicities and age groups. The second
workforce strategy is encouraging all employees to apply for all open promotional opportunities that
they qualify for. Lastly, require all employees to interact in mandatory team building activities that
promote diversity.

CCD Case Study: Amalgamated Bean Coffee
Introduction
This case study discusses Amalgamated Bean Coffee (ABC) Trading Company (also known as Café
Coffee Day (CCD)), the market leader in the Indian coffee industry, and its competition with
Starbucks, the market leader in the world's coffee industry. This paper will first focus on the
competitive advantages and challenges of CCD, then suggest a feasible strategy together with a
corporate social responsibility initiative for CCD to tackle the competition with Starbucks in India.
Regarding CCD's competitive advantages, VRIO framework will be used to determine if a particular
resource or competency is a sustainable competitive advantage, which should be costly to imitate. In
addition, the discussed competitive advantages are selected based on the other three requirements,
namely being valuable that may help CCD enhance effectiveness or efficiency or exploit
opportunities, being rare in the Indian coffee industry, and being exploited by CCD.
CCD's competitive advantages under VRIO framework
Operational efficiency
CCD was the only coffee company in the world who had a complete vertical integration. It managed
14,000 acres of coffee plantations and operated 1,469 Cafés in India. The economies of scale
facilitated CCD's operational efficiency. Furthermore, self–manufacturing coffee vending machines
and café furniture largely reduced its middleman costs. Moreover, CCD's efficiency could also be
proved by its fifty–day setting up time for a new café, compared with the

14–15 of Types of Coffee). Once a coffee seed has been processed it cannot be used to produce
another plant. The work does not end after the growing because it really begins with the processing
of the beans.
These ripe plants have to be picked for the harvest. In Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer,
their crops are mechanically harvested due to their great coffee fields. Mechanical harvesting takes
place when the branches are swept for cherries or the trunk is shaken to drop the cherries. The
shaking can be calibrated and will leave the unripe cherries on the trees. Another method used is
stripping; this is thought to be very wasteful because unripe cherries will also be removed. This
method is used when the majority of the fruit is ripe. In both methods, after the beans are shaken to
the ground, the beans are raked and sorted. The last method is self–explanatory and very popular,
hand picking the cherries. Ripe cherries (based on touch and color) are picked while the unripe
cherries are saved to be picked at a later date. Next, the coffee seeds have to be processed. "Once the
coffee has been picked, processing must begin as quickly as possible to prevent fruit spoilage" (from

the fact that he was gone, is that I wrote a letter to him just saying that I missed him, and knowing
that he was healed and no longer in pain helped me get over things. Today I live blithely after
learning more about him. I view him as my guardian angel, because even though he is no longer

Tim Hortons Value Chain Analysis
Have you every thought about every food item you consume in a day? Where does it come from and
how did it get to your plate? The activities required for food items to be extracted from its source
and delivered to your plate must go through a cycle called a value chain. It consists of 2 sections;
primary activities and secondary activities. Primary activities involved are inbound logistics,
operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and service until it reaches the hands and
mouths of the consumer (Porter, 1985). Secondary activities include procurement, human resource
management, technological development and infrastructure (Porter, 1985). The value chain requires
both primary and secondary activities to work efficiently and effectively to ensure that goods get
passed down stream to the market. Businesses invest in value chains as they are designed to enhance
the value of the product through "effective coordination of operational and organizational support
activities" (Gooch, 2005). This paper aims to define two food items consumed during breakfast and
track their value chain from start to finish, focusing on the primary activities. The two food items to

distribution centers that order the "commodity products" which should be known as the milk, the
sugar, the paper cups, etc. (Ho, Narweker, Patel & Ratusznik 13). These get shipped to the
distribution centers via truck, and then distributed to retailers once a week, just like coffee beans.
Paper for Starbucks is typically grown in colder climates such as Canada and is used to produce the
non–reusable paper cups that the coffee is being carried in. However, Starbucks plans on reducing
their waste by creating a reusable cup, which is made out of #5 plastic. Ironically, #5 plastic cannot
be recycled, as it is not accepted by most recyclers (Root 1), however the "reusable" cup is meant to
be semi–permanent meaning it only lasts for about a month or so if not properly cleaned.
Nonetheless, the probable marketing gimmick may thoroughly replace the paper cup, which would
change the commodity chain from the cups being produced in Canada to China. China is famous for
its cheap labor, and it's something that Canada–who used to be a main producer for cups for

Nestle Fairtrade Analysis
GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Nestlé's Case Analysis
Fairtrade or not to Fairtrade
I. Analyze: Identify Issue and its Scope
1. The primary issue is related to the coffee farmers in Africa and South America. They are not paid
a sufficient price for their crop, and health and environmental standards are unregulated. Low coffee
prices due to a higher supply than demand around 2000 leaving several coffee farmers with earnings
below sustenance level. This caused large coffee producers to enforce a more sustainable supply
chain with their coffee farmers. Nestlé is facing a decision whether to market their new instant
coffee under the fair–trade brand or to keep complying with their own high CSR standards.

Potential/existing new product consumers | * Shareholders | * Fair–trade Association | * NGOs | *
Government | * Environmentalists | * Employees | * Board of directors | * Potential Investors | *
People who boycotted Nestlé | |
7. Our objective for this case is to evaluate the level of profitability of adapting the "fair–trade"
certification onto Nestlé's new instant coffee product. To determine the priority, first and foremost is
to evaluate potential direct or indirect affects to each stakeholder category in this situation.
For instance, the coffee bean farmers would be the first on the list as it affects their life quality,

Making A Coffee Shop At A Dutch Bros
When you first arrive at a Dutch Bros. Coffee Company location, it is usually slightly
overwhelming, especially if you are used to the typical coffee shop atmosphere; a cozy indoor place
to sit in peace and quiet while you sip your preferred drink. The line of cars at the drive–thru only
coffee shop is typically long, since it is such a popular place, and the initial thought is that you will
encounter a long wait, annoyed employees, and thoughtlessly made drinks. What else could you
expect with such a small building and a multitude of customers waiting in line? Dutch Bros. is
anything but your typical coffee shop, so all of these assumptions, while accurate for some places,
are completely off base for this particular company. If you are looking for a coffee shop that is
convenient, offers a high level of customer service, and has specialty items such as White Coffee,
you need look no further than your local Dutch Bros coffee shop.
Brothers Dane and Travis Boersma opened their first Dutch Bros. coffee shop as a travelling
temporary location in Grants Pass, Oregon in 1992. The pair sold their espresso from a push cart
throughout Grants Pass until they were able to open their first permanent location. Over the years

Write An Essay On Adversity
Every person faces adversity differently. In this selection, the question is this: are you a carrot, an
egg, or a coffee bean. The carrot faces challenges hard, seemingly strong, but comes out the other
side soft and weak. The egg is fragile, with a thin shell, goes through its changes to become
hardened on the inside. Finally, there is the coffee bean: through its adversity– its boiling water– it
changes into something entirely different, while changing the circumstances and conditions around
it. I believe there are all types of these people in the world; many are eggs and carrots, and slightly
fewer coffee beans. Immense numbers of people don't handle adversity well, and some never truly

It has taken me a very long time to get to the point where I can be, but I believe that is how I am
now, more often than not. When I go through personal struggle– when I go into that boiling pot of
water that is my mind and my own emotional problems and experiences– I always come out
different, and often better for the experience. I learn and grow from my own mishaps and turmoil. I
excel when I'm left to push myself: to pull myself up by my own bootstraps, so to speak. I put
myself through my own personal Hell; I am truly my own harshest critic. As a coffee bean, in
numerous situations, I will be ground and crushed into miniscule grains, then slammed with boiling
water and sifted through until there is nothing left. After this, however, the best aspects of myself are
pulled out of me; I may now be raw, barren, and vulnerable, but the most intriguing and wonderful
parts of myself are now pooled and out in the open. I change the circumstances of my life, the way
things are, so that I may once again reach the penultimate point of my life and push through
difficulties to come out the opposite side stronger, more volatile and flavorful (if perhaps a tad
bitter). This is why I believe, that more often than anything else, I am a coffee

From The Seed To The Cup
From the Seed to the Cup
Between the time that he picked them and you purchase them, the beans went through a series of
steps very much like this.
1. Planting
A coffee bean is actually a seed. When dried, roasted and ground, it is used to brew coffee. But if the
seed is not processed, it can be planted and will grow into a coffee tree. Coffee seeds are generally
planted in large beds in shaded nurseries. After sprouting, the seedlings are removed from the seed
bed to be planted in individual pots in carefully formulated soils. They will be watered frequently
and shaded from bright sunlight until they are hearty enough to be permanently planted. Planting
often takes place during the wet season, so that the soil around the young trees remains moist while
the roots become firmly established.2. Harvesting the Cherries
Depending on the variety, it will take approximately 3 or 4 years for the newly planted coffee trees
to begin to bear fruit. The fruit, called the coffee cherry, turns a bright, deep red when it is ripe and
ready to be harvested. In most countries, the coffee crop is picked by hand, a labor–intensive and
difficult process, though in places like Brazil, where the landscape is relatively flat and the coffee
fields immense, the process has been mechanized. Whether picked by hand or by machine, all coffee
is harvested in one of two ways
Strip Picked – the entire crop is harvested at one time. This can either be done by machine or by
hand. In either case, all of the

How Coffee Affects The Environmental Ethics Of The Bean
Every day, around 205 million American's start their day off with a cup of coffee. Weather this
coffee is brewed at home, picked up on the way to work or slowly enjoyed at a café, coffee is a
common ground between millions of people.
Coffee is estimated to be a $20 billion industry, its impacts reaching almost every corner of the
earth. As coffee spread around the world and demand for the bean grew, an industry popped up that
led to current day unethical and unsustainable practices surrounding the production and marketing
of the bean. Vast consumption of coffee is what continues the drive to cultivate and produce the
drink. The production of coffee affects the environmental ethics of many communities, but through
changing the markets and commodities surrounding coffee, negative impacts of its production have
turned around drastically.
From first being discovered by humans in ancient Ethiopia, coffee has gone from being seen
skeptically as a magical plant to a staple drink in most societies. A myth puts a goat herder in the
fields of Ethiopia, and one day he noticed his goats were acting more chipper than usual. They had
eaten an unusual berry that gave them these tendencies. The goat herder brought the beans to his
monastery, where the religious leaders mushed the berries up and ate them. They then stood alert
through late hours of prayer, uncovering their effect on humans. (Starbird, 1981) From the beans
discovery in Ethiopia it has had many forms of consumption. Our

When most people are young, they are not that careful. I guess some are more careful than others,

it went in a tiny bit more. Then I yelled for mom and told her what happened. "Mom! I have

Mom was about to make an appointment to the doctor to see if something was wrong or to take it

customers donated their old "ugly" coffee cups to Tim and Matt. Hence the name Ugly Mug Coffee
(Smith, 2006). For three years Tim and Matt ran a profitable business but they soon realized that the
true backbone of the company, the coffee growers were getting the short end of the stick and this
just did not sit well with them. So they decided to close the coffee shop and focus on buying beans
and roasting them straight from the coffee bean growers. This job practice is called fair trade. What
is a fair trade? Basically, in laymen 's terms, they cut out the middleman. Instead of everything going
through a number of organizations, they can buy directly from the person or in this case the coffee
bean farmers. Tim and Matt saw that they could not only help the coffee bean farmers by buying

Coffee Is The Best Beans Essay
Coffee connoisseurs love nothing more than a cup of freshly brewed coffee. There was a time when
getting the best beans and roasting them at home was not possible for everyone. With the advent of
sophisticated coffee machines, it is now possible for everyone roast the coffee in the comfort of their
homes. But there 's still the problem of getting the best beans. Not everyone is aware or has

at home then you need to find best beans. Coffee beans are of different types depending on their
grade and the place where they were grown. Another factor that affects the coffee taste is the
freshness of the beans. You must buy the freshest beans and not the ones that have been stored in a
warehouse for number of years. While buying coffee beans, the first thing you must look for is their
grade and the place where they were grown. The most popular and commonly available beans are
Costa Rican Tarrazu, Kenya AA, Guatemalan Antigua, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Brazilian Santos,
Sumatra Mandheling, Mexican Altura, Jamaican Blue Mountain, Colombian Supremo and
Tanzanian Peaberry. All these beans are rich in aroma and flavour and are named after the place
where they were grown. The taste differs and depends on the climate, soil and height at which the
beans were grown. If you are not familiar with all the bean types, you may want to try them at your

Influence Consumer Purchase Behaviour for the Coffee Bean
1. Introduction:
In this 21st century, a demand of the coffee and tea is ever–increasing in complexity due to the new
life style of modern people. People become more particular in choosing the coffee brand. Buyers
hence may have to mainly rely on the brand image and the reputation of the manufacturers in order
to simplify their purchase decisions. In addition to brand image, there are other factors that
contribute to consumer purchase decision–making such as price of the products, servicescape and so
on.

It concerns consumers' fairness with respect of the prices being charged for products and the quality
of the products the company produces. Some examples include fair pricing and trust. Satisfying
these attributes will enhance consumer's overall perception of brand image.
Corporate–image dimension
Erickson, Johannson and Chao (1984) quoted corporate image "as a summary or inference
information in the consumer decision making process" (as cited in Hsieh et. al, 2004). It influences
the overall brand–image perception by altering consumer's attitude towards the firm, and eventually
to their products. Subsequently, it will affect consumer's preference and choice. Examples include
public responsibility such as towards environment and employees. However, research by Page and
Fearn (2005) showed that consumers care about corporate behaviour, but modestly.
Country–image dimension
According to Hsieh et al. (2004), it is suggested that "consumers tend to use halo images of a
country to judge quality and to generate inferential brand beliefs." Thus it can be suggested that
consumers' positive attitudes and impressions towards a country will induce positive attitude
towards the brand, and ultimately increasing their willingness to buy the products.

  • 4. An Analysis of the Business Environments of Initech and... In business today, the environment of work and management has become far more complex than at the start of the previous century. This is the result of not only technological and communication advances, but also because of an increasing focus on employee satisfaction and motivation. Hence, companies that wish to reduce employee turnover while increasing employee motivation are generally also those that see an increase in customer satisfaction and loyalty. When considering the business environments of Initech and the Coffee Bean, it is clear that the respective managers have vastly different ways of ensuring the effective function of business. Peter Gibbons, an employee at Initech Corporation, for example, appears to tend towards performance in terms of achievement orientation (Kozlowski and Bell, n.d., p.7). For Peter, task completion is of primary importance. In other words, completing tasks is the basis of meaning he derives from his work. He reason for this orientation is the way in which the management of the company and its employees is set up. Peter operates from a basis of fear: Fear of being reprimanded by eight different bosses and fear of losing his job. There is therefore no meaning for Peter besides completing the tasks assigned to him. He completes them only to avoid unpleasant consequences, rather than to achieve the company's goals or to learn skills in order to advance in his work. Since Peter's motivation is currently based only upon avoiding negative ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Commodities originate their value from human labor, yet, notably in the Western world, they are passed back and forth without concern or notice. They gather in masses in brand name grocery stores and shops, but their point of origin and cultivation is unknown; as such, they are only seen as items to be purchased, sold, and consumed. Living in a capitalistic society, we are unaware of the "mysterious origins" of our everyday products, and therefore, unable to see the symbolic and material practices we conduct daily in our consumption of commodities, such as coffee. • 12. The Magical Bean: Coffee Coffee has been part of our everyday life for centuries. It is said that Kaldi, a habitant and goatherd of the Ethiopian highlands, centuries ago, noticed that his goats, upon eating the fruits from a certain tree, became so energetic that they did not sleep that night. After this, Kaldi reported his discovery to the abbot of the local monastery. They then decided to make a drink using that "fruit" (coffee beans) and discovered that it enabled them to stay alert for long hours. What they did not know was that this "juice" would later be called coffee and that it would be drunk worldwide for the upcoming centuries due to its energy boosting effect. But why is it that coffee has this effect? Coffee is made up of many constituents, these being: caffeine, trigonelline, carbohydrates, chlorogenic acids, lipids, amino acids, organic acids, melanoidins, volatile aroma, ash and others that are unknown. Only one of these components is the reason to why coffee contains the energetic effect that so many people seek. This component is caffeine. Caffeine's molecular formula is, C8H10N4O2, and therefore it has eight carbon atoms, ten hydrogen atoms, four nitrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms. It is formed by covalent bonds and double bonds (when atoms share two electrons among them) between non–metals (Figure 1). Hydrogen's electronic configuration is 1s1, Carbon's electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 2p2, Nitrogen's electronic configuration is 1s2 2s2 3p3 and Oxygen's electronic ... The weary warriors marched into battle with their snack, and the first power bar was created. Traders from Arab while doing business in Europe, heard the news of the berries wrapped in ghee, and tried them, they agreed with those before them. The traders returned to their homeland, excited to share the news. When the traders shared the news with the citizens of Arab. They decided to cultivated the plant for the first time on farmland.. They enjoyed the brew created by boiling the beans in water, and called it "qahwa" or that which prevents sleep. The Arabs had another term for qahwa, its "kahwah" and is one of many words they used for wine. In the process of stripping the coffee bean's outer cherry–like flesh, a pulp is left behind. When a coffee berry bush is harvested, they let the unripe cherries remain on the tree to ripen and be harvested at another time. A ripe coffee berry is determined by gently squeezing the fruit. • 20. My Life At Dunkin ' Donuts ' From the Ground to My Cup I was struggling to find a research topic that affected my day to day life while also being plant related. In the beginning, I was unclear but the answer was in my face the entire time. First, I am a college student and far from a morning person. Second, I work at Dunkin ' Donuts. Lastly, I consume it 6 days a week. Coffee plays a huge role in my life. As I approached my research, I thought I would start with what I know: the coffee bean. Right away, I learned that coffea (scientific name) is a type of flowering plant. It is a part of the Rubiaceae family and can be spotted by its simple, opposite leaves and interpetiolar stipules. These plants are natives of Southern Africa and tropical Asia. What most of us know as "coffee beans" are coffee seeds and it is what we use to make coffee. Even though a "coffee bean" could be easily recognized, it might be more difficult to spot a coffee tree. Coffee seeds work well when they are planted in large, shaded beds. After the seeds begin to sprout, they are replanted in individual plots. They are usually planted in the wet season because the plant needs the moisture. Coffee trees are covered with waxy, green leaves that produce white flowers. Those flowers will die after a few days and small cherries will begin to grow. They will turn continue to change colors as they grow. Depending on its variety and care, a coffee tree can produce fruit for a long time. "The tree of Coffea Arabica will grow fruits after ... CCD Case Study: Amalgamated Bean Coffee Introduction This case study discusses Amalgamated Bean Coffee (ABC) Trading Company (also known as Café Coffee Day (CCD)), the market leader in the Indian coffee industry, and its competition with Starbucks, the market leader in the world's coffee industry. This paper will first focus on the competitive advantages and challenges of CCD, then suggest a feasible strategy together with a corporate social responsibility initiative for CCD to tackle the competition with Starbucks in India. Regarding CCD's competitive advantages, VRIO framework will be used to determine if a particular resource or competency is a sustainable competitive advantage, which should be costly to imitate. In addition, the discussed competitive advantages are selected based on the other three requirements, namely being valuable that may help CCD enhance effectiveness or efficiency or exploit opportunities, being rare in the Indian coffee industry, and being exploited by CCD. CCD's competitive advantages under VRIO framework Operational efficiency CCD was the only coffee company in the world who had a complete vertical integration. It managed 14,000 acres of coffee plantations and operated 1,469 Cafés in India. The economies of scale facilitated CCD's operational efficiency. Lastly, I consume it 6 days a week. Coffee plays a huge role in my life. It is a great topic to research and it is plant related. As I approached my research, I thought I would start with what I know: the coffee bean. Right away, I learned that coffea (scientific name) is a type of flowering plant. The work does not end after the growing because it really begins with the processing of the beans. These ripe plants have to be picked for the harvest. In Brazil, the world's largest coffee producer, their crops are mechanically harvested due to their great coffee fields. Mechanical harvesting takes place when the branches are swept for cherries or the trunk is shaken to drop the cherries. The shaking can be calibrated and will leave the unripe cherries on the trees. Another method used is stripping; this is thought to be very wasteful because unripe cherries will also be removed. This method is used when the majority of the fruit is ripe. In both methods, after the beans are shaken to the ground, the beans are raked and sorted. The last method is self–explanatory and very popular, hand picking the cherries. Ripe cherries (based on touch and color) are picked while the unripe cherries are saved to be picked at a later date. Next, the coffee seeds have to be processed. "Once the coffee has been picked, processing must begin as quickly as possible to prevent fruit spoilage" (from pp.31–32 of 10 Steps from Seed to Cup). If you do not learn to overcome things it will take a toll on you and prevent you from reaching your full potential. As I grew I learned that adversity will take different hit on different individuals, but I had to deal with what life was throwing at me and make it the best of what it would be. When I was little I would always wonder where my dad 's father was, because I knew my mom had hers so I thought my dad should have his. It wasn 't until I got a little older, around the age of seven, when my parents sat down and finally told me that he had passed away before I was born. I really struggled after that for while, but then I learned that I should be happy. My grandma told me that he would want me to be. Another thing that helped me get over the fact that he was gone, is that I wrote a letter to him just saying that I missed him, and knowing that he was healed and no longer in pain helped me get over things. Today I live blithely after learning more about him. I view him as my guardian angel, because even though he is no longer here with us he is up above watching out for me in the good and bad times. The activities required for food items to be extracted from its source and delivered to your plate must go through a cycle called a value chain. It consists of 2 sections; primary activities and secondary activities. Primary activities involved are inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, and service until it reaches the hands and mouths of the consumer (Porter, 1985). Secondary activities include procurement, human resource management, technological development and infrastructure (Porter, 1985). The value chain requires both primary and secondary activities to work efficiently and effectively to ensure that goods get passed down stream to the market. Businesses invest in value chains as they are designed to enhance the value of the product through "effective coordination of operational and organizational support activities" (Gooch, 2005). Planting A coffee bean is actually a seed. When dried, roasted and ground, it is used to brew coffee. But if the seed is not processed, it can be planted and will grow into a coffee tree. Coffee seeds are generally planted in large beds in shaded nurseries. After sprouting, the seedlings are removed from the seed bed to be planted in individual pots in carefully formulated soils. They will be watered frequently and shaded from bright sunlight until they are hearty enough to be permanently planted. Planting often takes place during the wet season, so that the soil around the young trees remains moist while the roots become firmly established.2. Harvesting the Cherries Depending on the variety, it will take approximately 3 or 4 years for the newly planted coffee trees to begin to bear fruit. The fruit, called the coffee cherry, turns a bright, deep red when it is ripe and ready to be harvested. In most countries, the coffee crop is picked by hand, a labor–intensive and difficult process, though in places like Brazil, where the landscape is relatively flat and the coffee fields immense, the process has been mechanized.
