How Coffee is grown

A coffee bean is actually a seed. When dried,
roasted and ground, it is used to brew coffee. But
if the seed is not processed, it can be planted and
will grow into a coffee tree.
Coffee seeds are generally planted in large beds
in shaded nurseries, seedling bags are used
during this step. After sprouting, the seedlings
are removed from the seed bed to be planted in
individual pots in carefully formulated soils.

Protection of the crops from diseases, pests
such as:
Coffee berry disease and coffee wilt disease can
devastate coffee crops. Coffee berry disease is
caused by a fungus called Colletotrichum
coffeanum, which affects the flowers and unripe
berries. An outbreak of coffee berry disease can
destroy up to 75 % of a crop.
Coffee wilt disease, also known as
tracheomycosis, is caused by a fungus that kills
trees by attacking the branches and stems

Green coffee is shipped in either
jute or sisal bags which are loaded
into shipping containers, or it is
bulk shipped inside plastic-lined
containers. Jute bags are more
used than other material.
Coffee from Mexico is sometimes
shipped in a sisal outer bag
containing a perforated plastic
inner bag. Woven plastic bags,
also are occasionally used for
transport from West Africa and
have no effect on the quality of the
coffee, as they let the coffee beans
breath.
