Vertebrates are characterized by having advanced nervous systems and well-developed brains and skeletons. They can live on land, in water, or air and have protective skin, bilateral symmetry, and respiratory systems using lungs or gills. Reptiles are a type of vertebrate that are cold-blooded, have scales and lay eggs, and have four limbs though some like snakes do not. They have internal fertilization and scales that act as armor to protect their bodies.
