Dislocation, Relocation and Root Search: a Study of Bharati Mukherjee’s Desir...iosrjce
Mukherjee’s protagonists are all sensitive and are differently trained in the new ethnic imagination.
They are tossed in an environment of ambivalence regarding their identity, racism, sexism and other social
oppression. They negotiate displacement and face the multicultural reality in the process of cultural
differentiation and assimilation. Bharati Mukherjee has explored many facets of diasporic consciousness and
immigrant experience of dislocations, ruptures and relocation of the migrant women in her fictions. She has
dealt with the ambivalence of their psychic and spatial identity and the trauma of dislocations at multiple levels.
The impact of patriarchy on the Indian society varies from the one in the West and therefore Mukherjee has
tried to evolve her own strand of feminism grounded in the truth of compulsory displacement that they
recurrently undergo. Indian expatriate writers do not write from all exclusive foreignness of their identity but
their writing reflects the perspective of someone caught between two cultures. Migrancy and dislocation, either
consensual or conflictual, is a global and trans-cultural necessity. In her earlier novels, diasporic
transmigration meant new opening and emancipation from the clutches of convention bound society. In these
novels, attachment to one’s own native culture and homeland, living abroad was presented as something to be
spurned and total assimilation into the host culture was hailed. It is to create a location of the presence that
reduces the diasporic individual to delink the past and deconstruct the future. In Desirable Daughters
Mukherjee considers different pattern of belonging in the Global perspectives from in-between temporality to
assimilative permanence and further, hyphenated and unmixed nationness.

Editor's Message
The Indian subcontinent is a wonderful location for the scholars interested in diaspora studies as it is an interesting place of both homeland and hostland for diasporas in sizable number. The diasporas from the subcontinent spread out approximately in 150 countries
across the globe. Evidently the diasporas from Indian subcontinent demonstrate exceptional diversity as compared to many other diasporas. Similar is also the case of diasporas settled in India which have to negotiate with the diversities within the country.
The diasporas settled in Indian soil are quite many; prominent among them are African, Chinese, Tibetans, Durch, Parsis, Jews etc. Though they have been here for several centuries and contributed to the socio-economic and cultural fabric of the country, there is dearth of literature on them. Given the growing interest on diaspora
studies today, we hope that there will be more studies and
research on them in the future.
GRFDT is trying to bring the attention of the scholars to one such diaspora which has not been studied much till date. The GRFDT monthly seminar series talk ―African Diaspora in India‖ is one such initiative, where scholars working on diasporas in India share their views. GRFDT welcomes any suggestion to strengthen the research
in this area.
This issue of newsletter covers two interviews. The first interview with Prof. P.C. Jain discusses the importance of diaspora studies in academics and policy- making. Prof. Jain emphasizes that as the migration become intensified and diaspora communities grow across the globe, the academic response to such phenomenon will grow too. The second interview with Dr. Annapurna Pandey highlights
how the diasporas are engaged in the home state development through mobilization of skills and advocacy.
The Newsletter also covers its regular feature i.e. book review, news, call for papers etc. We wish to inform our readers that GRFDT has recently compiled a very comprehensive bibliography in a 150 pages handbook covering more than 30 key words to help academicians/researchers/policy-makers immensely to have a broad map of diaspora studies. The book is available free on our website at www.grfdt.com

2. “Representation of Indian Diasporic
Identity Among Ethnic Media Abroad”-
A Study
Presented By: Mou Mukherjee Das
Assistant Professor,
Aliah University
Kolkata.
3. What is Diaspora.
What constitutes Indian Diaspora-
The High Level Committee on Indian Diaspora , under the
Chairmanship of Dr. L. M. Singhvi, M.P. defines diaspora as
“communities of migrants living or settled permanently in
other countries, aware of its origins and identity and
maintaining varying degrees of linkages with mother
country” (2001).
In the report of this committee, Indian Diaspora refers to
“the people who migrated from territories that are
currently within the borders of the Republic of India. It
also refers to their descendants”
4. The Diaspora is currently estimated to number over
twenty million composed of “NRIs” (Indian citizens not
residing in India) and “PIOs” (Persons of Indian
Origin who have acquired the citizenship of some other
country).
Diaspora Indians establish and sustain their identity
through ethnic Indian media.
5. What is then ethnic Indian media?
Ethnic media are primarily regarded as media by and for
ethnics in a host country with content in ethnic language
(Hayes, 2006; Ojo, 2006). This assumption is that ethnic
media are produced by ethnic communities in the host
country to serve ethnic cultural, political, economic, and
everyday needs (Shi, 2009).
6. They also serve as a focal point for the development of a
local consensus and a means of expression of the
community’s demands on the wider host community
(Gandy, 2000, p. 45).
Several of these ethnic media outlets were established in
response to the misrepresentation, underrepresentation,
and invisibility of ethnic groups in the mainstream media
(Ojo, 2006, p. 351).
7. Media is a practice of representation that uses image, text,
symbol and sound. It involves the production, consumption,
reception, and circulation of meanings (Silverstone, 1999) at
various levels (individuals, groups, institutions, nations, etc)
in different contexts or situations.
Roger Silverstone and Myria Georgiou's (2005) says that the
media contributes to the creation of symbolic communicative
spaces in which identities can be constructed
How can representation happen through media
8. • Can be produced in the country of origin or the country of
settlement, or in both
• Might be commercial, community, public, municipal or
other organizations' initiatives
• Might address an audience in local, national or
transnational spaces
•Can adapt a role as the mouthpiece of a community or
identify as independent and commercial institutions
•Their output can be in the ethnic language(s), in the
language(s) of the country of settlement or in a combination
of languages
Ethnic media-
9. •Their output can be information-centred or entertainment-
centred though usually it is a combination
•Their output might relate to the country of origin, the local ,
the national, the diasporic context or to all
•They might adapt a segregation, ethno-centric perspective or
identify as institutions of a multicultural society
• They might address the migrant generation, the new
generations or different generations across the community
10. A detailed exploratory study was conducted to get a view of
the role played by the ethnic Indian media. Most of the
research participants were recruited through referrals by
friends and participants themselves, from America, United
Kingdom, Canada, and Middle East. The informants
belonged to middle and upper middle class households, with
occupations ranging from a student, social worker to an
information technology professional. In terms of ethnic
background, there were Bengalis, Punjabis, Sindhis, Gujratis
all combined.
Methodology-
11. What identity do the ethnic Indian media either consciously
or subconsciously represent about diasporic Indians?
Do ethnic media help or hinder in the promotion of the
Indian identity and culture?
Objective
12. The presence of ethnic Indian media in different countries-

Ethnic Indian media in foreign countries
The Indian film industry,

15. The representation of the Indian identity In the ethnic
Indian media
Follows a multifactor and mixed approach.

different communities of India, in the foreign country.
Focuses highly on the Bollywood quotient .The
Bollywood phenomenon has bonded the diasporic
Indians and had provided them with an identity which
resonates with respect with the natives in that country
17. Knowledge and command over English language have also
given Indians a head start from other immigrant groups in
America and Europe.
Indian films and increasingly Indian TV serials are getting
popular in many countries in Europe, Africa, Middle East

The images of super-heroes, historic events, sacred
