The Hangzhou Bay Bridge in China is the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world at 36 kilometers long. It took 9 years and 600 engineers to plan and design the S-shaped bridge, which links Ningbo and Jiaxing and cuts 120 km off the drive between Shanghai and Ningbo. The unique bridge has a 10,000 square meter service center in the middle with a restaurant, gas station, hotel, and observation tower allowing visitors to view the bay's extraordinary tides and waves. The specially designed bridge can withstand typhoons and hurricanes.
The document discusses visualizing geolocated internet measurement data through interactive maps and tools. It notes there is lots of measurement data collected from various network nodes with some geographical data explicitly provided and some inferred. The visualization aims to convey trends in the large amounts of geographical data through dynamic maps that distort maps based on measurements and allow animation of changes over time in an intuitive interface for analysis. Tools discussed include cartograms that distort map sizes based on data amounts and animated maps in an interactive web-based format.
The document summarizes Jake Hofman's presentation on learning from web activity data. It discusses a case study analyzing demographic diversity on the web using anonymized browsing data from 265,000 US users. The study found some sites have highly skewed audiences along attributes like gender, race, education and income, though most sites' audiences more closely match the general population. It also compared demographic skew between online audiences and offline neighborhoods, finding websites generally have more racially diverse audiences than neighborhoods have residents. The presentation explored differences in how demographic groups distribute their time online.
The document discusses the strategies used by foreign brands to survive in the Indian market. It outlines how consumer behavior in India changed from pre-liberalization to post-liberalization as incomes rose and exposure to foreign cultures increased. Foreign brands that want to succeed in India must understand the diverse cultural landscape and adapt their marketing and products to local tastes and values. The document provides examples of both foreign brands that successfully Indianized their approach as well as those that failed to adapt.

The document discusses the history and evolution of web search engines from the early tools like Archie and Veronica that indexed file names on FTP sites to the first search engines like W3Catalog, Aliweb, and JumpStation that indexed web pages to the first "full text" search engines like WebCrawler and Lycos that let users search for any word on any webpage and became the standard for major search engines today. Early search engines used various techniques like notifications from site administrators or web robots to find and index web pages to build their searchable databases before the rise of crawler-based search engines.
