There is a wealth of literature supporting the use of various inflammatory markers in diagnosis and
monitoring of treatment of infectious complications in post operative patients[1 4]. Various authors
have studied markers including (Total leucocyte count) TLC, CRP(C reactive protein), AST
(Aspartate Transaminase) and ALT (Alanine Transaminase) in patients with SIRS and sepsis [5].
Behaviour of inflammatory markers and their correlation to infection in the postoperative phase
have been evaluated in various disciplines of surgery. However, similar studies in maxillofacial
surgery have been found to be very scarce. We therefore designed a study to evaluate perioperative

rare cases where sufficient forces are available, such as the Allied invasion of NW Europe in
WWII, truly grave damage can be sufficiently inflicted. But this situation is not usually the case.
Employing amphibious forces also carries a significant risk that damage to one s own forces will
be disproportionate with that inflicted upon the enemy. The Spartan Hoplite invasion of
Sphacteria provides an extreme example where the invading force was isolated and destroyed. A
similar example is the British WWI invasion of Gallipoli. Although not completely destroyed, the
invading force was isolated on the beachhead and severely mauled. Requirements for troop
replenishment and resupply created a festering sore that drained Britain s war effort on a
secondary front removed from Germany, the primary enemy. Damage to the Turkish forces was
not grave and was certainly out of proportion with the cost in any case. The allied invasion at
Anzio in WWII was another similar example of disproportionate cost/benefit, at least in its initial

Preconceptions
In both Merchant of Venice, by Shakespeare, and Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly, identities,
prejudices, and judgements are constantly put to the test. Shylock and Portia, who originally
identify strongly with their Jewish ancestry are subject to prejudice and judgement, ultimately
causing them to change their concepts of identity to conform to society. Similarly, the Creature is
judged for his physical appearance, causing him to grow angry when he is exiled by society. Both
novels seem to suggest that bias plays a role in determining the relationship between people, even
when they have never met before. These characters are judged, eventually shaping the way they
will identify by the end of the novel, and largely forcing them to change the very way they act and
appear. For this reason, in both Merchant of Venice and Frankenstein, prejudiceis used as a tool to
stereotype and label people, eventually causing them to conform and mold themselves to the
norms set out for them by society. Many people are often judged because they are different from
