René Descartes was a French philosopher, scientist, and mathematician born in 1596 in France who is considered the father of modern philosophy. He developed the philosophical framework of rationalism, which uses reason rather than experience as the basis for understanding the world. Descartes was the first to provide a framework for the nature sciences and mathematics as they developed. He died in 1650 in Stockholm, Sweden while working as a philosophy teacher for the queen.
