Rene Descartes was a French philosopher born in 1596 who is known for developing Cartesianism and using rationalism and methodological doubt. He took a mathematical approach to understanding knowledge and believed the mind was separate from the body. Descartes developed his philosophies like methodological doubt and the distinction between mind and body in works such as Discourse on Method and Meditations on First Philosophy. He died in 1650 from pneumonia exacerbated by overworking while sick.
