Reflective
Teaching
Approach
MARJORIE P. ESPARAGOZA
What is reflective teaching?
 Reflection - serious thought or consideration
Reflective teaching simply means
 Recalling, considering and evaluating
past experience.
 Trying to answer “what” and “why”
questions for educational reason.
 Professional development, self-
evaluation, self –learning.
Why is it
important?
To avoid “jumping into
conclusions” and limiting our
perception.
To effectively collect our
observations and analyze them.
To help us identify problems and
areas of improvement.
To grow as teachers and give us
motivation to improve our practice.
Misconceptions about reflective
teaching
 “I don’t need it. I’m experienced
and I know my students’”
 “It’s just thinking.”
 “I don’t have time.”
How do we reflect?
Write a diary or a journal.
Self- report
recording
Peer observation
A reflective approach to teaching involves
changes in the way we usually perceive
teaching and our role in the process of
teaching. Teachers who explore their own
teaching through critical reflection
develop changes in attitudes and
awareness which they believe can benefit
their professional growth as teachers, as
well as improve the kind of support they
provide their students.
