Traditional bibliometric methods of evaluating academic research, such as journal impact factors and article citations, have been supplemented in the past 5-10 years by the development of altmetrics (alternative metrics or article level metrics). Altmetrics measures impact of research, data and publications, such as references in data and knowledge bases, article views, downloads and mentions in social media and news media. This presentation gives a brief background to altmetrics and demonstrates how Rhodes University librarians are using social media to raise the visibility of the research output of their institution. National Informatics Centre had established a subject repository in May 2005. It is meant for Medical and Allied Sciences and named as OpenMED@NIC . It has MeSH® based subject categorization and this makes it one of its own kind. Taking OpenMED@NIC as a case – this paper discusses key issues in establishing and maintaining an open access repository. Librarians and information science professionals can play active role in providing access and exposure to quality research and academic content generated in their institutions. Mature and standard open sources softwares are now available for setting up repositories. Libraries can install one of these on existing institutional or library servers to setup repositories. However to ensure better access and faster response time dedicated hardware and reliable connectivity would be required. Librarians and information science professional can play important role in exposing intellectual content produced by their organizations. They can take of various roles like – generating awareness among staff, researchers and students about benefits of self arching in institutional or subject repositories; training them in uploading their articles and other documents in such repositories; acting as meta-data editors and repositories managers. Establishing a repository, administrating and inviting authors to deposit their articles and other works in it is golden opportunity available to librarians and information science professionals. This opportunity should be grabbed with open hands.

What is referencing?
It is very important that whenever you find a reference you immediately make a note of all
the relevant bibliographical (author, title etc) details. It can be very difficult to retrace the
details later and you will need the information to cite the references at the end of your
assignment or dissertation.
When you write your assignment or dissertation you are required to refer to the work of other
authors. Each time you do so, it is necessary to identify their work by making reference to it -
both in the text of your assignment (called 'in-text' referencing) and in a list at the end of your
assignment (called a 'Reference List'). This practice of acknowledging authors is known as
'referencing'.
References must be provided whenever you use someone else's opinions, theories, data or
organisation of material. You need to reference information from books, articles, videos, web
sites, images, computers and any other print or electronic sources. A reference is required if
you:
• paraphrase (use someone else's ideas in your own words)
• summarise (use a brief account of someone else's ideas)
• quote (use someone else's exact words)
• copy (use someone else's figures, tables or structure)

References enhance your writing and assist your reader by:
• showing the breadth of your research
• strengthening your academic argument
• showing the reader the source of your information
• allowing the reader to consult your sources independently
• allowing the reader to verify your data
Always remember to use referencing because if you use someone else's work and don't
reference it correctly, it is plagiarism, which is a serious offence of academic misconduct.

Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) is a relatively new research tool with a wide range of applications in different
fields ranging from discourse analysis to cognitive science, from information retrieval to machine learning and
so on. In this paper, we chart the development and diffusion of LSA as a research tool using Social Network
Analysis (SNA) approach that reveals the social structure of a discipline in terms of collaboration among
scientists. Using Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science (WoS), we identified 65 papers with “Latent Semantic
Analysis” in their titles and 250 papers in their topics (but not in titles) between 1990 and 2008. We then
analyzed those papers using bibliometric and SNA techniques such as co-authorship and cluster analysis. It
appears that as the emphasis moves from the research tool (LSA) itself to its applications in different fields,
citations to papers with LSA in their titles tend to decrease. The productivity of authors fits Lotka’s Law while
the network of authors is quite loose. Networks of journals cited in papers with LSA in their titles and topics are
well connected.

Previous studies have found that papers with publicly available datasets receive a higher number of citations than similar studies without available data. In addition, new research has found that by putting your research data online, you’ll become up to 30% more highly cited than if you kept your data hidden. In this workshop I will elaborate the advantages of sharing research data and introduce some relevant “Research Tools” for increasing datasets visibility.
