Cellular networks have facilitated positioning in addition to voice or data communications from the beginning, since 2G, and we’ve since grown to rely on positioning technology to make our lives safer, simpler, more productive, and even fun. Cellular positioning complements other technologies to operate indoors and outdoors, including dense urban environments where tall buildings interfere with satellite positioning. It works whether we’re standing still, walking, or in a moving vehicle. With 5G, cellular positioning breaks new ground to bring robust precise positioning indoors and outdoors, to meet even the most demanding Industry 4.0 needs.
As we look to the future, the Connected Intelligent Edge will bring a new dimension of positional insight to a broad range of devices, improving wireless use cases still under development. We’re already charting the course to 5G Advanced and beyond by working on the evolution of cellular positioning technology to include RF sensing for situational awareness.

Until recently, campus migrations have been from 1G to 10G to 40G. While 1G and 10G still represent a significant share of the enterprise market’s Ethernet ports, a transition to 25G, and to 100G for large and high-end enterprises, is expected to happen more quickly than the previous transition to 10G. Furthermore, support for 25G adapters that can also run at 10G with existing fiber cabling can help accelerate that migration, providing opportunities to migrate to a 100G switch infrastructure while supporting significant investment protection.
Cisco has been pioneering several initiatives to bring new Ethernet technologies to market. These include Cisco 25GBASE Small Form-Factor Pluggable SFP28, Cisco 100GBASE Quad Small Form-Factor Pluggable QSFP28, and more importantly, dual-rate optics along with the latest Cisco Catalyst 9500 Series high-performance switches to facilitate such network speeds and architecture transformations.

Performance Evaluation and Tuning of Virtual Infrastructure Managers for (Micro) Virtual Network Functions
Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) are emerging as the keystone of 5G network architectures: flexibility, agility, fast instantiation times, consolidation, Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) hardware support and significant cost savings are fundamental for meeting the requirements of the new generation of mobile networks. In this paper we deal with the management of the virtual computing resources for the execution of Micro VNFs. This functionality is performed by the Virtual Infrastructure Manager (VIM) in the NFV MANagement and Orchestration (MANO) reference architecture. We discuss the VIM instantiation process and propose a generic reference model, starting from the analysis of two Open Source VIMs, namely OpenStack Nova and Nomad. We implemented a tuned version of the VIMs with the specific goal of reducing the duration of the instantiation process. We realized a performance comparison of the two VIMs, both considering the plain and the tuned versions. The tuned VIMs and the performance evaluation tools that we have employed are provided openly and can be downloaded from our repository.
Summit 16: The Hitchhiker/Hacker's Guide to NFV BenchmarkingOPNFV
The landscape of emerging NFV benchmarking can be very confusing to navigate for anybody who is not immersed in the relevant industry communities. There are specifications, standards and methodologies as well as frameworks, test-cases, traffic-profiles, KPIs, metrics, traffic generators with open-source and proprietary tools. Furthermore platform characterization includes VNFs, the VNFI as well as network controllers and managers all which have an impact on performance. This presentation will increase your NFV benchmarking IQ by explaining the history and state-of-art NFV benchmarking in ETSI NFV, IETF, OPNFV with examples of recent results. For anybody not actively working in benchmarking groups across NFV industry forums this presentation is sure to get your performance pulse racing.

CIF16: Building the Superfluid Cloud with Unikernels (Simon Kuenzer, NEC Europe)The Linux Foundation
The confluence of a number of relatively recent trends including the development of virtualization technologies, the deployment of micro datacenters at PoPs, and the availability of microservers, opens up the possibility of evolving the cloud, and the network it is connected to, towards a superfluid cloud: a model where parties other than infrastructure owners can quickly deploy and migrate virtualized services throughout the network (in the core, at aggregation points and at the edge), enabling a number of novel use cases including virtualized CPEs and on-the-fly services, among others. Towards this goal, we identify a number of required mechanisms and present early evaluation results of their implementation.
On an inexpensive commodity server, we are able to concurrently run up to 10,000 specialized virtual machines (based on unikernels), instantiate a VM in as little as 10 milliseconds, and migrate it in under 100 milliseconds.
The Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK) is a set of data plane libraries and NIC drivers that can be used to optimize the data path in networking applications, enabling the creation of high performance virtual network functions on COTS Intel x86 processors.
SR-IOV ixgbe Driver Limitations and ImprovementLF Events
SR-IOV is a device virtualization technology, it’s mainly used for improving network performance of virtual machines. However, SR-IOV has some limitations which come from hardware and/or driver implementation. For certain use case, such as Network Function Virtualization(NFV), those limitations are critical to provide services. Intel 10Gb NIC, Niantic(82599), has such limitations(e.g. VLAN filtering, multicast promiscuous) for NFV use case.
This presentation will show the limitations and issues and how they are being addressed, then explain how implements VF multicast promiscuous mode support in ixgbe driver and VF trust, iproute2 functionality enhancement.

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
