SR-IOV is a device virtualization technology, it’s mainly used for improving network performance of virtual machines. However, SR-IOV has some limitations which come from hardware and/or driver implementation. For certain use case, such as Network Function Virtualization(NFV), those limitations are critical to provide services. Intel 10Gb NIC, Niantic(82599), has such limitations(e.g. VLAN filtering, multicast promiscuous) for NFV use case.
This presentation will show the limitations and issues and how they are being addressed, then explain how implements VF multicast promiscuous mode support in ixgbe driver and VF trust, iproute2 functionality enhancement.

The key objective of this document is to clearly document and collect NIC information on two specific Network Adapters and do a comparison to find the difference or at least root cause hypothesis for further troubleshooting.

Building Network Functions with eBPF & BCCKernel TLV
eBPF (Extended Berkeley Packet Filter) is an in-kernel virtual machine that allows running user-supplied sandboxed programs inside of the kernel. It is especially well-suited to network programs and it's possible to write programs that filter traffic, classify traffic and perform high-performance custom packet processing.
BCC (BPF Compiler Collection) is a toolkit for creating efficient kernel tracing and manipulation programs. It makes use of eBPF.
BCC provides an end-to-end workflow for developing eBPF programs and supplies Python bindings, making eBPF programs much easier to write.
Together, eBPF and BCC allow you to develop and deploy network functions safely and easily, focusing on your application logic (instead of kernel datapath integration).
In this session, we will introduce eBPF and BCC, explain how to implement a network function using BCC, discuss some real-life use-cases and show a live demonstration of the technology.

NVMe PCIe and TLC V-NAND It’s about TimeDell World
With an explosion in data and the relentless growth in demand for information, identifying a much more efficient means of storage has become extremely important. In this session, we will cover the key drivers behind the need for faster and more efficient storage. NVMe, a standardized protocol for PCIe-based storage, is giving users the huge leap in bandwidth required for demanding applications. Samsung, who makes the fastest NVMe SSDs on the market, will cover the benefits enabled by such technology, in areas such as fraud prevention and surgical procedures.
The technology behind flash drives – NAND memory – will be spotlighted in this presentation. Memory manufacturers have improved NAND’s value by migrating from single-level-cell to multi-level-cell designs, but the most significant evolution will be a marriage of triple-level-cell and V-NAND flash manufacturing technologies. Samsung will also provide an overview of the prospects for TLC V-NAND with mobile device manufacturers, while examining the strong potential for a much wider TLC V-NAND market in data centers.

DPDK brings high-performance/low-latency virtualization networking capabilities thanks to its Vhost/Virtio support. The session will first introduce DPDK and its Vhost/Virtio implementations, exposing to the audience examples of possible uses, and challenges that need to be addressed to achieve high-performance, functionality and reliability. Then, Vhost/Virtio improvements introduced in last DPDK release will be covered, such as receive path optimizations, Virtio's indirect descriptors support, or transmit zero copy to name a few. The speakers will explain which problems they aim to address, how they address them, mentioning their limitations.
Finally, the speakers, who are active DPDK's Virtio/Vhost contributors, will expose what new developments are in the pipe to tackle the remaining challenges.
The session will be presented so that DPDK developers and users find useful information on current developments and status. People not familiar with DPDK may find a overview, get and share ideas with other projects.
There are many systems that handle heavy UDP transactions, like DNS and RADIUS servers. Nowadays 10G Ethernet NICs are so widely deployed and even 40G and 100G NICs are out there. This makes it difficult for a single server to get enough performance to consume link bandwidth with short packet transactions. Since usually Linux is by default not tuned for dedicated UDP servers, we are investigating ways to boost such UDP transaction performance.
This talk will show how we analyze the bottleneck and give tips we found to make the performance better. Also we discuss challenges to improve it even more.

The bottleneck in flash storage is often the interface. SAS/SATA interfaces were designed specifically for hard disk drives not for flash media. For example, flash storage can support many more simultaneous I/O operations. The resolution to the problem is to use a different interface, one that is higher throughput and is more directly accessible from the CPU. Leveraging one of these interfaces and extracting optimal performance from the flash media means leaving the confines of the SCSI protocol with customized proprietary drivers. The result is complexity and slow innovation.

NFV is now a well-known concept and in an early deployment stage, leveraging and adapting OpenStack and other Open Source Software systems. In the OPNFV project, a large group of industry peers is building a carrier-grade, integrated, open source reference platform for the NFV community. It is now time for taking the next steps and to extend the colloaboration with upstream projects -- by opening up previously proprietary developments, by contributing code and other artifacts in order to create a ecosystem of NFV platforms, applications, and management/orchestration systems.
This talk shares some insights on how Red Hat and NEC are working together to foster collaboration in the NFV ecosystem by actively working with OpenStack and other upstream projects.
NEC has pioneered the adoption of Linux, KVM, Open vSwitch, and OpenStack for their mobile network core product line (virtualized EPC) and has gained significant experience through development work and deployments. NEC's extensions for high efficiency and high availability have led to contributions of new features to OpenStack, such as DPDK vSwitch control and CPU allocation features. For NEC, it is very important to have those features integrated into the mainstream code base for building reliable infrastructure systems.
Red Hat, one of main contributors to OpenStack, leads the development of those functions to meet NFV requirements in OpenStack, making critical and demanding applications run of top of open platforms. Kernel address sanitizer (KASan) is a dynamic memory error detector for finding out-of-bounds and use-after-free bugs in Linux kernel. It uses shadow memory to record whether each byte of memory is safe to access and uses compile-time instrumentation to check shadow memory
on each memory access. In this presentation Alexander Popov will describe the successful experience of porting KASan to a bare-metal hypervisor: the main steps, pitfalls and the ways to make KASan checks much more strict and multi-purpose.

This presentation will share the kernel feature backport experience with audience, help them understand how to do backports quickly and effectively without detailed knowledge of the target feature, thus giving more flexibility and Improving productivity when making products.
It will talk by some examples, to discuss how to get info from backport request, how to find necessary commits, how to get dependency, how to resolve conflicts, and finally how to test it.

Open Source Software has undoubtedly enabled the SDN and NFV transformation. The Controller projects lead the way, including OpenDaylight, ONOS, and Ryu, among others. Benefits of open source for both individuals and their organizations are well documented, including collective innovation, R&D efficiency, individual recognition, and the opportunity to contribute to the community.
OPNFV established an open reference platform for NFV; the initial releases are validating open source building blocks that make up the NFV Infrastructure (NFVI). As a result, OPNFV expanded its charter to address NFV Management and Orchestration (MANO), which serves as the boundary between services and the network.
Not surprisingly, the industry responded with a new series of open source orchestration projects. In this presentation we examine a new Linux Foundation Collaborative Project- OPEN-O- for end-to-end service orchestration over NFV Infrastructure, as well as SDN and legacy networks. After sharing the vision and target use cases, we will examine the functional architecture and technology approach, and provide an update on the project.
Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) is founded for a microservice based new computing paradigm. Fujitsu joined CNCF since last December expecting to establish a new open standard platform. In this session, we'd like to share idea behind our participation and technical topics we're now investigating.

The IoT is becoming extremely popular keyword in the industries while there are many different interpretations or various definitions. However, one common requirement is that it requires many Sensor devices connected to Linux devices. The user space drivers for GPIO, I2C/SPI and UART sensors in the past were implemented separately from scratch delicately for each product. This will cause significant challenge of software engineering overhead while GPIO, I2C/SPI and UART sensors are dramatically increasing which have to be supported. The IoTDK is one of the library to provide portability of sensors' driver to solve the situation.
The talk will includes guide of IoTDK and 96Boards and tutorial of programing I2C and GPIO devices. Targeted audiences are who are interested in IoT sensors or who would like to move from Arduino and Raspberry Pi to modern ARM CPU effectively.

Generating a Reproducible and Maintainable Embedded Linux Environment with Po...LF Events
For civil infrastructure system related products, kernel and open source software included in the system requires not only industrial grade but also super long term support. We have developed a meta layer for Poky build system which can uses the Debian’s source codes to share long term maintenance effort. However, there is an issue on source code management for product development which relates on reproducibility and maintainability. We have some experiences in product maintenance phase, for example, a bug occurred more than three years later after the product was released. In such kind of case, if we can reproduce the Linux environment for any older version, it is useful to find the source of issue.
In this talk, we will explain how to manage source codes and how to generate an embedded Linux environment with Poky and Deby for long term maintenance.

Trading derivatives on a decentralized system aims for high
availability (HA) and disaster recovery (DR). Both HA and DR can be
met by incorporating a blockchain and a container technology. The
Hyperledger is a blockchain framework aims for a cross-industry open
standard with the freely customizable plugins, smart contract, and the
data payload. Those features exposes us the easy ways to implement our
trading platform on a blockchain. The Docker was brought to handle
each specific Hyperledger chain internally. Also, hovering the whole
Hyperledger nodes with containers reduce our time in building
infrastructure, and much easier to be deployed on the production
environment. This presentation will show how we integrate the
Hyperledger and the Docker container for our derivatives trading
project, and the issues that we are focusing on. Additionally, the
talk partially includes the performance evaluation results under
different configurations.
