The document discusses network function virtualization (NFV) and VMware's vCloud NFV platform. It describes how vCloud NFV provides a common, modular platform that allows service providers to deploy virtualized network functions from multiple vendors on shared infrastructure in a cost-effective manner. This enables benefits like reduced costs, increased flexibility, and accelerated time to market for new services. The document also outlines VMware's NFV reference architecture, partner ecosystem, and momentum among global service providers adopting its NFV solutions.

If you’re in Tech and haven’t heard about Docker, you’ve been living under a rock. The ultimate Silicon Valley darling went from a two-person startup into becoming the de facto standard of modern application design virtually overnight. Two years ago very few people knew about Docker. Today, if your software is not supporting Docker, you’re not part of the cool kids club. In my opinion Docker is a marketing driven company because early on it understood the needs of their customers, i.e. the developers, and created three fantastic value propositions. First, Docker solved an important problem for developers: it overcame the limitations of the existing Linux container technologies and made the promise “build an app once, run it anywhere” possible. Second, Docker adopted “give before you take” attitude, open-sourced their code and contributed to the DevOps community early on. Lastly, Docker focused on making the developer’s life as easy as possible by building a bunch of tools to automate mundane tasks.

After deployment and build-out of an OpenStack cloud, operators require a complete end to end single pane view of the SDN-based network overlay, all the associated workloads and hypervisors and physical infrastructure. Enterprises and cloud providers alike have aggressively adopted SDN visualization and monitoring platforms in addition to OpenStack horizon to keep their infrastructure running with 100% uptime. Additionally, new tools that aim at helping with proactive remediation of issues are being deployed and leveraged to quickly bring back the system to healthy conditions. In this session, attendees will discover:
How comprehensive visualization could help operations staff
How to correlate physical and virtual networks
How to immediately identify problems as they arise
This presentation and demo show the hardware which consist of 5G UE’s, 5G radios, a fronthaul network and C-RAN with high density switches and servers, a transport network of 3 DWDM switches and a DC network of servers and high density switches. The basic software arrangement will be shown with emphasis on the structure of the orchestration and SDN controllers and the choice of virtualization components and logical networking. An eMBB slice will be brought up which will entail programming of the radios, the fronthaul, backhaul, a node B and the core. Its behavior will be noted through the test UE’s. An URRLC slice will be brought up and its nodeB and core will be demonstrated through its test UE’s showing extremely low latency. An MMTC slice will be brought up and a large number of test IOT devices will be demonstrated via the test UE’s. The eMBB slice will be augmented by programming a slice selection function that will create a ICN slice and an application (TBD) will be shown running over that ICN core (but with the eMBB slice). Spectrum will be reassigned from slice to slice and the changes noted as an optimizer recomputes the proper allocation of resources and executes it. Traffic will be increased and the changes in the backhaul over transport and core function placements will be noted. An additional demonstration will show creation of multiple 4G air interfaces using the same infrastructure network but with 4G radios and 4G UE’s using OAI software and ETTUS SDRs. A Skype session will be created between the two 4G slices. We will also try to show some of the EPC functions being moved while the UE sessions are not impacted.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) / Network Function Virtualization (NFV) bas...Michelle Holley
In this class we’ll describe the architecture and reference implementation of a Software Defined Networking (SDN) / Network Function Virtualization (NFV) based Evolved Packet Core (EPC). We describe in detail the S- and P-Gateways (S-Serving; P-Packet) control and data planes along with other components like the Mobile Management Engine (MME) and a cellular traffic emulator. We show that "SDN’izing" the mobile core enables to scale signaling, i.e. the control plane, and user data plane traffic independently – a key requirement for upcoming usage models with billions of IoT devices sharing the network with traditional User End Points.
This EPC is released under ON.Lab M-CORD (Mobile Central Office Re-architected as Datacenter).

This Intel Network Builders Webinar is on Carrier-class environments for NFV lifecycle management. Communications service providers see the strong business upside from deploying NFV-based services. NFV promises to lower costs, simplify network operations, and usher in a new era of rapid service innovation. However, there are still concerns about running mission-critical, revenue- generating network functions as software applications on general purpose compute platforms rather than purpose-built appliances.
Intel, Wind River and Overture explore what is required to create a carrier grade, high-performance environment for hosting virtual network functions (VNFs).
Learn how to:
• Create a high-performance, high reliability NFV infrastructure
• Identify essential attributes needed for carrier-class management and orchestration
• Optimize the placement of VNFs and the benefits of distributed and centralized models • Support the complete service life cycle in a VNF-agnostic service environment

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery.
