The Growing Concern on Food Safety
There is growing concern about food safety and especially about inputs of pathogenic microorganisms
with possible implications for human health and the environment [1]. Microbial activity is a primary
mode of deterioration of many foods and is often responsible for the loss of quality and safety.
Concern
over pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms in foods is increasing due to the increase in outbreaks of
foodborne disease [2]. It has been estimated that as many as 30% of people in the industrialized
countries
suffer from food borne diseases each year caused by microbes [3]. Food additives have been used for
centuries in the food processing practices for several purposes including the prevention of microbial
growth and increase in the food shelf lives [4]. Due to the excessive use of food preservatives which
some
of them are doubtful to be carcinogenic and teratogenic and also increasing consumer demand to
natural
foods with a long shelf life and without chemical preservatives, food producers trend to replace
chemical
preservatives with natural forms such as oils and herbal extracts as antibacterial additives [5, 6].
In the recent years, efforts have been devoted to find new antimicrobial materials from natural
resources
for food preservation [7]. Reports indicated that many extracts and essential oils of edible plants had
properties to prevent against a wide range of fungal contamination of foods [5, 7, 8, 9, 10].

The Influences of the Main Characters in The Scarlet...
Who is Arthur Dimmsdale? Do we, as readers, ever fully understand the extent of Dimmsdale s
character provided to us by Nathaniel Hawthorne? In the novel, The Scarlet Letter, the on the surface
themes of sin and suffering are very clear, but the development of the different characters and their
own personal challenges plays a big factor (and maybe even the biggest factor) to the moral of the
story rather than what is shown in plain sight. There are three main characters that reflect the different
themes and help progress the plot. Hester Prynne is the reason for the conflict within the text, being
the woman cast off from society because of an adulterous relationship that bore her a child. She is
sometimes argued to be the heroine , but is more frequently seen as a symbol of independence and
comfortableness outside of the social norm. She is the only character with the ability to recognize,
acknowledge, and move forward with her sin, which is important to understand as the complexity of
the other main characters are examined. Roger Chillingsworth is hardly a character to speculate in
regards to good nature because he completely lacks in that area. The Leach , so he is called, is
determined to get revenge because of his wounded pride and his already present evil nature, making
his sin the blackest of them all. Being Hester Prynne s husband before he left, he comes back bearing a
different name and learns of the mischief that had been taking place while he was

The Theory Of Scientific Abuse
Scientific Abuse
Darwin, the name widely recognized as the grandfather of evolution, describes evolution as organ,
instinct, or any whole being...arriving at its present state by many graduated steps (Darwin 158). The
struggle for survival forces organisms to evolve gradually and adapt to their environment, therefore
increasing their chances of survival. Darwin furthers his theories into the origins of species in which
he explains how several breeds to which each has attended, are descended from aboriginally distinct
species (Darwin 103). The observation of the animals suggests that they further originate from a single
ancestor. Darwin s points are biological in nature. Other notable scientific figures have built upon

Spencer then points out how the evolved division of labor characterizes an advanced nation and the
more society move towards specialization, the better it is as a whole.
Similarly, Galton talks about the evolution of society as whole, however, he brings up methodologies
in which society can be improved. He states The possibility of improving the race of a nation depends
on the power of increasing the productivity of the best stock (Galton 24). In simple terms, the level at
which society improves is determined by how well the upper class can reproduce. Galton is, thereby,
implying selective parenthood. In theory, as generation continue, the increase in intellects would result
in a more able society.
Adding on to Galton, in the early 20th century, Davenport puts the use of human harvest in his study
of eugenics. He singles out the criminal minded, the feeble minded, the mentally ill, and the
impoverished groups in society. He proposes control by the state of propagation of the mentally
incompetent (Davenport 4). He does, however, qualify that he does not mean control by means of
extermination, but sterilization of the mentally incompetent is not out of reach. Davenport believes
that such characteristics are inheritable ... and they may be combined in any desirable mosaic
suggesting selective breeding of the human population in order to build a better class of humans.

Ancient People And Agriculture
Ancient people set a building block that we today still build upon. There are many ways ancient
people have done this, such as developing spoken language and inventing farming/agriculture. I think
that farming and agriculture had the biggest impact of all on society, from ancient to modern times,
because it helped people have a permanent home, develop more specialized jobs, and create new
technologies.
Before I start talking about farming and agriculture, I will explain a little about the history of it.
Farming and agriculture began during the Neolithic Era, or the New Stone Age, about 10,000 years
ago, first in Southwest Asia. The reason farming and agriculture was now possible was because the Ice
Ages ended. The Ice Ages were when there were long periods of freezing weather. During this time,
the whole ground would be covered in ice, and the sea levels were very low. The water was so low
that strips of land, called land bridges, let people cross rivers, seas, and maybe even oceans. Then, a

They did not have to be busy chasing herds of animals around just to stay alive, because the
introduction of farming and agriculture gave the community enough food. Because of their new
permanent homes, this also allowed them to develop new things, such as pottery, weaving, and even
one of the most important tools, the wheel. Farming and agriculture also gave people more freedom,
because now, since there is a reliable source of food, farms, there was much more free time that they
could spend on hobbies. The food surplus also freed people to specialize in jobs. People who are
talented at something, could choose that job, so they could be as productive to the community as
possible. They could also choose a job that they enjoyed to do. Also, permanent homes led to villages
developing, which then led to towns and

Islamophobi Understanding Anti-Muslim Sentiment In The West
Following the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001 (most commonly: 9/11 ), the FBI
reported an increase in hate crimes, nearly twenty times more than the usual, against Muslim
Americans (Khan Ecklund, 2012). After 9/11, anti Islamic hate crimes against Muslims went from
being the second least reported hate crime of religious bias incidents to being the second highest
reported ( Statistics ). This drastic increase was due to Muslims being subject to unjust discrimination
in the United States caused by negative stereotypes, prejudice and misconceptions which effectively
became more widespread after September 11, 2001. Before 9/11, Muslims were already being
stereotyped by the rising media portrayals as being violent and intolerant ... Show more content on

Literary Analysis Of The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Literary Analysis The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber is
about a man who routinely fantasizes about himself in other lives. The main character, Walter Mitty,
inhabits a world that emasculates him. During an errand run with his wife, Walter repeatedly imagines
himself in traditionally masculine roles. The characters he inhabits display distinct masculine qualities
such as courage, leadership, aggression, and decisiveness. In direct contrast to this, Mitty shies away
from conflict in reality and is often humiliated by women and men. For instance, Mitty s car is a
symbol of his inability to meet his own masculine ideals. The man in the parking lot is required to
park it for Mitty. His wife sets

Straying away from life as a whole only to be alone, some may say is the strong way to heal
themselves when dealing with extreme grief or a major crisis . In the book Wild, twenty two year old
Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost it all. Dealing with the loss of her mother, her family torn to

nothing more to lose, lifeless, she made the most life changing decision of her life. Strayed never

Many women have been through incidents where one has had to exhibited personal strength to get

unnecessary items such as books, shoes, stoves, and even a twelve pack of condoms, but why? Going
into something for the first time not knowing what to expect can be very dangerous. Every night the

To Play or Not to Play It seems that no matter what at some point in a child s life they wander up to
their parents and ask, Mom, Dad, can I learn to play an instrument? Whether or not it is the guitar,
drums, piano, or flute a child could possibly have the thought of wanting to learn how to play an
instrument. When Mom and Dad end up saying no to their child they should stop and realize that
when a child knows how to play a musical instrument it can help them out in many more ways than
they know (iDiva). Having a young kid learn an instrument can help develop better coordination, build

Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach are some of the most creative people in the history of the World, and
what did they do? They played instruments. Playing a musical instrument for a child is a creative
pursuit (Caron). Parents are always pushing their children to be more and more creative, well parents
why not buy them an instrument and let their creativity be expressed? Everybody is born creative, but
many people don t realize it because it s not encouraged in their early years (iDiva). Having your child
play an instrument would let that creativity that is bundled up inside them, that they did not even know
they had, and would let it sore out. Look at the creativity that the guitarist in the last thirty to forty
years have. Eddie Van Halen, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Angus Young are three of the greatest guitarist.
Imagine if their parents would have never bought them a guitar. Then some of the best music ever
would have never been written. It is the ultimate feeling someone can receive when they are just
playing along on an instrument and all of a sudden compose some sort of music. When I m playing
my guitar just doing really nonsense chord progressions, or playing random riffs, and I build a song on
the guitar the feeling is unreal. Once that happens the only thought that goes through my head is,

Introduction Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has been dubbed as the most common sexually transmitted
infection that does not require sexual penetration for it to spread. Individuals infected with HPV may
be asymptomatic or they may acquire genital warts or cancer depending on the strains that have
infected them. With more than 100 strains identified, the most commonly spread strains that result to
genital warts and cancer are 6 and 11, 16 and 18, respectively. These common strains are currently
vaccine preventable with cervarix (for type 16 and 18) and Gardasil (types 6, 11, 16 and 18). In 2007,

It is noted that statistics on HPV infection is nil worldwide, nationally or locally. Treatment of the
virus requires constant visitation to medical practitioners. According to Workowski et al (2010),
genital warts may have various recommended treatment regimen depending on considerable factors
each with its own side effects but this does not remove the virus but only removes the growth.
Treating HPV related cancers (penile, anogenital, oropharyngeal, cervical) on the other hand is
another roller coaster experience. Disappointingly, very few studies highlight the experiences of the
individuals suffering from HPV. Hence, this study is aimed in understanding the lived experiences of
women with human papillomavirus. Through this qualitative study, health care providers may be able
to analyze the personal perceptions, life changes, success and adversities of these patients. It is the
hope of the researcher that the findings of the study would be utilized in checking and improving the
current nursing practice to enable health care providers to create a more holistic method of care and
management for women with HPV.

selfish person driven by money. Although at this point in the play I believe an audience in
Shakespeare s time would have been forced to show dislike towards Shylock just because Shylock is a

the value of thrice three times the value of the bond. Antonio s money is invested in ships that import
goods from foreign countries. The Shakespearean audience at this point would be oblivious to the
catastrophe that is about to encounter Antonio because he has three ships out a sea and they are
expected to return. The audience would be confident that nothing unpleasant could happen to Antonio
as he is a Christian and was helping out a friend by borrowing the money. I believe the audiences in

Behaviourists explain maladaptive behaviour in terms of the learning principles that sustain and

Behaviorism was originally founded by John B. Watson who believed that behavior had the means to
be measured, trained and changed (1913) The Behavioural theory is firstly based on experiment and
secondly by describing how human behaviour is learnt through principles and rules. Maladaptive
behaviour is when an individual is unable to adjust to situations; psychologists use this term to

done this with their little albert experiment. Albert was a nine month old infant, he was tested on his
reactions to various stimuli, he was shown a white rat, and a rabbit, a monkey and various masks, and
he showed no fear to any of these stimuli. They noticed that if a hammer was struck against at steel
bar behind his head he would be startled and he would burst into tears. The noise was the
unconditioned stimuli and Albert crying was the unconditioned response. When Albert was 11 months
old the white rat was presented and seconds later the hammer was struck against the steel bar. This
was done repeatedly over the next 7 weeks, making Albert burst into tears. The white rat was the
neutral stimuli, when paired with the noise it became the conditioned stimuli. When Albert saw the rat
he would show fear and cry. Albert learnt the association between the rat and the noise creating a

always around us. Microwaves, computers and cellphones give off radiation. There are many other

a fraction of a second to thousands of years. The period of time in which a radioactive substance gives

But despite such consequences, Röntgen was able to publish his research soon after the discovery and
called the radiation X rays. Röntgen s discovery was worth mentioning because his research catalyzed
other scientists into searching for other forms of radiation. One such scientist was Henri Becquerel,
who was so intrigued by the Röntgen s discovery that he decided to search for luminescent objects that
could produce rays that were similar to X rays. It discovery was followed in 1896 by Henri Becquerel
s discovery that uranium salts gave off similar rays naturally. Though originally thinking that the rays
were given off by phosphorescent uranium salts after prolonged exposure to the sun, he eventually
abandoned this hypothesis. Through further experimentation including non phosphorescent uranium,
he instead came to recognize that it was the material itself that gave off the rays. Although it was
Henri Becquerel that discovered the phenomenon, it was his doctoral student, Marie Curie, who
named it: radioactivity. Effects of Radiation Different amounts of radiation have different effects on

What is meant by the community indifference curve?
The community indifference curve shows the various combinations of two commodities which yield
the same level of satisfaction or utility to a community or nation. It is intended to represent the
preferences of a country as a whole and is a convenient tool for deriving quantities of trade in a two

The shape of the production possibility frontier (PPF) of a country depends on: (1) its factor
endowments and (2) the production functions of the various commodities. The plausible shapes of the
production possibility frontier include:
Linear
Suppose there are constant returns to scale in both industries and only one factor, then the production
possibility frontier is a straight line. If the opportunity cost is constant as production of different goods
is changing, then a linear PPF is produced.
Concave (towards origin)
Suppose there is diseconomies of scale or decreasing returns to scale. Under full utilization of
resources, the production possibility frontier is concave towards the origin. This shape is basically due
to the differences in optimal factor intensities between industries. If a country faces increasing
opportunity costs or marginal rate of transformation (MRT) in producing more units of a commodity,
then this is shown by a PPF that is concave. The country will produce where the MRT is equal to the
equilibrium relative commodity price.
Convex (towards origin)
Suppose there is economies of scale or increasing returns to scale. Under full utilization of resources,
the production possibility frontier is convex towards the origin. If there is increasing returns to scale in
either or both industries and there is one factor of production then the production set is non convex.

My Strengths And Weaknesses
In today s world, people have become more competitive than before. If a person knows their strengths,
they will be aware of their opportunities as they understand where their security and confidence life.
Nonetheless, if a person realizes that their weaknesses and threats are a major source of insecurity,
they wok to focus on such areas to overcome challenges posed by the treats.
Strengths
Quality and useful resources are necessary to my success. My resources are not high in quantity, but
the high quality resources are significant. The most valuable resource that I have is my experience and
education. In any job market, these two resources are valuable. The better and more resources that a
person has, the better their chances of outdriving competition and being successful. However, a
resource might have competition that surrounds them. For instance, education is an important
competitive resource because knowledge is crucial for success. The ability of a person to advance and
apply their knowledge and education in the field of personal success is important. I believe that my
biggest strengths are my ability to adapt quickly to the situation and being very assertive. I ve also
shown a great amount of strengths through relationship building encounters. However, I need to
improve my articulation. I am from Haiti and because English isn t my first language, I tend to have
an accent. I am in no way shape or form ashamed of my accent but in the business industry it is vital
to be able to communicate properly. Nonetheless, these strengths and weaknesses although I am still
working on them are the key to my achievements and success.
Potential Strength
My strength is based on my ability to be creative and innovative and keeping an open mind. These
characteristics ensure that I am more efficient and effective compared to the peers and the general
environment. Improving on innovation allows me to stand out in different environments due to the
knowledge intensity quality that exemplifies my abilities and education. Innovation and creativity
enable me to advance in competition and create an upper hand in the industry.
Faults or Bad Habits
Bad habits or faults are inevitable in the competitive job market. These faults or

In late 2007, the labour government regained power of the federal parliament. From here the Rudd

Howard s workchoices for quiet sometime and must focus on recruiting new members (Brigden, 2008,

on unions as managers within a workplace are encouraged to now work directly with their employees,
rather then including a third party such as a trade union ( Balnave et al, 2007, pg 169). Because of this,
trade union members will continue to decline Benefits of joining a union: Joining a union can be
extremely beneficial for its members. A union offers it s members the chance to join a collective
support rather then fight individually. It increases economic benefits, increases productivity and
workplace protection ( Balnave et al, 2007, pg 131). The culture of the workplace may also influence
ones decision to join a union. When faced with a problem it is a lot easier to proceed to fight this
problem if you are part of a collective rather then approach the problem as an individual. In the case of

The Russian Avant Garde and the Bolshevik Revolution Essay
The Russian Avant Garde and the Bolshevik Revolution
The Russian Avant Garde began in Russia in about 1915 It was the year that Malevich revealed his
Suprematist compositions that reduced painting to total abstraction. and rid the pictures of any
reference whatsoever to the visual world. He is credited with being the first artist to do this; that is,
forsake the visual world for a world of pure feeling and sensation. This was the first movement
originated by Russians and the birth of several other Avant Garde movements. Probably the most
popular piece at his 1915 exhibition was BLACK SQUARE (real name suprematist composition . It s
basically a black square on a slightly larger white square that forms a border around it. It was hung ...

There had been a smaller Capitalist revolution in February that year but the October Revolution
completely usurped it. After the October Revolution both Tatlin and Malevich opened up art schools.
Malevich s Suprematist school was similar in style but not ideology to the De Stijl movement in
Holland, while the Constructivist school of Tatlin s had links to the German Bauhaus. The October
revolution had been a primarily proletariat revolution and proletarians have proven to be somewhat
negative in their attitude to new, radical confronting art styles and this was no exception. Both schools
realised they had to prove their worth, so to speak. The new communist government saw artists as
elite. A few things transpired to change the soviet government s ideas about these artists.
Rodchenko was proud of the fact that the leftist artists had been the first to come to work with the
Bolshevik comrades. There was a Constructivist manifesto released in 1922,( when Constructivism
had reached its Zenith and had started ever so slowly to decline,) stating that the movement as a whole
was trying to build the intellectual material production of Communist culture . The general mood
among the Avant Garde was one of completely embracing the Bolshevik ideal. Perhaps this is why
they were given so much freedom. From all accounts, the leftist artists felt very supported by the
government.

MUCH as I liked Antonia, I hated a superior tone that she sometimes took with me. She was four
years older than I, to be sure, and had seen more of the world; but I was a boy and she was a girl, and I
resented her protecting manner. Before the autumn was over she began to treat me like an equal and to

Symbolism In Cry The Beloved Country
The truth is that our Christian civilization is riddled through and through with dilemma. We believe in
the brotherhood of man, but we do not want it in South Africa. We believe that God endows men with
diverse gifts, and that human life depends for its fullness on their employment and enjoyment, but we
are afraid to explore this belief too deeply (Paton 187). These are some of the words spoken by Arthur
Jarvis, one of the key characters in the book Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton. These words
exemplify the racial prejudice, hypocrisy, and condemnation discerned by white South Africans.
Throughout this novel, Paton unveils the realities of racial prejudice and oppression through the use of
literary elements such as irony and symbolism; thus, this allows Paton to strengthen the delineation of
hypocrisy, dichotomy, and and prejudice that is instilled in society.
One of the most significant literary element used by Paton is symbolism. Symbolism allows Paton to
convey the political division that occurs within South Africa, specifically Ndotsheni. Paton conveys
this message using the Titihoya bird. In the novel, the Titihoya is displayed singing near James Jarvis s
wealthy farm in Ndotsheni above the hills, conveniently named the High Place . Kumalo describes this
place, saying There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass covered
and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it (Paton 1). In this part of the land, the land is
fertile and there is an abundant source of water and food, allowing for the Titihoya bird to thrive. In
aberration, Kumalo describes the valley of Ndotsheni named Umzimkulu as [...] You look down on
one of the fairest valleys of Africa. About you there is grass and bracken and you may hear the forlorn
crying of the Titihoya, one of the birds of the veld. Below you is the valley of the Umzimkulu (Paton
1). In Umzimkulu, the Titihoya bird is unable to sing in Umzimkulu. Paton diction allows to partition
this two conflicting places and allows for the explanation of the Titihoya bird s aberrant behavior.
Paton describes the High Place as grass covered and lovely beyond any singing , giving a connotation
that seems to instill

Essay On Software Programmers
What They Do
A software developer designs and creates applications that can be used on electronics such as a
computer or smartphone. They will also periodically update applications once they have already been
released in order to improve upon or fix any issues they might have. These people must have a
creative mind in order to concoct an original idea. Software developers begin by making a series of
models or diagrams, such as flowcharts, regarding their idea for an application. Once that is completed
it is then handed over to a programmer who will run a code that fits the idea, and test it. However,
some companies have software developers come up with their own code and test it themselves. These

Due to this, it is ideal to work in an office environment, however some software developers
telecommute, which is usually less effective but can still work. The majority of these people work full
time and work long hours, as it can take several months, or years, to fully finish a program. Some
businesses that hire software developers are Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, etc.
Pay
The median annual pay for an application software developer was $100,080. The highest ten percent
earned more than $157,590, and the lowest 10% earned less than $58,300. Developers typically get
paid a salary, but the median hourly pay comes out to just below $50, at $49.17. Most work full time
at their jobs.
Job Outlook/Opportunities
From 2014 to 2024, employment of application software developers is expected to grow by 19%. With
more technology coming out, there is an increase in the need for different software, especially on all
the new smartphones and tablets being released. Health and medical
insurance and reinsurance carriers are also going to need new, innovative software to help manage
healthcare policy enrollments and to digitally administer existing policies. Also, security concerns
regarding the cyber world may cause the need for more threat protection software to be developed.

These are what he called animal like features (Mason, 2015).
The aim of biological criminology is stop crime from occurring. Thus, the idea of Darwinism comes
into play. Darwinism is the idea of natural selection where only the so called good genes can be passed
down and prevent genes that can cause excessive aggression or mental illness. Those are considered to
be bad and could drive a person to commit crime Christopher (Beaver Ferguson, 2009). Therefore, a
method of doing this is called sterilization. Sterilization is a genetic intervention which prevents
criminals, feebleminded, mentally disorder, those that are considered to be unfit in the society not to
pass down their genes by forcibly causing them not to reproduced (Lombardo, 2008). A famous case
study for this is the case of Buck V. Bell. She was accused as having mentally disorder and feeble
minded. Eight out of nine judges of the State of Virginia took the right to sterilize her including her
mother and daughter. This Buck v. Bell, 274 U.S. 200 1927 act known as a surgery tool used in the
government policy to prevent those feeble minded and inadequate people in the society to have
children. This has come under the Darwinism theory as the genetic selection (Lombardo, 2008).
Part 2)
In contrast to the positivism approach, classical theory has a different way of explanation why crime
occur. Classical theory

Analysis Of Dear White People
The television series Dear White People by Justin Simien portrays stereotypical problems of racial
identity in today s society, however, the creator imbeds the series with hidden messages that are not
particularly intended. The show exemplifies how people of color try to deal with living in a society
where they are not particularly welcome in a place of elite higher education. It follows a group of
colored students as they navigate through life in college attending a primarily white Ivy League
university. In the series, the creator implements the ideas of two sided racism, political correctness,
and misplaced power.
Although this show suggests it is about white people and their faults, Simien portrays two sided
racism in the series although it is not addressed head on. The show s protagonist, Sam White who is
also a woman, is characterized as the angry black chic on campus because she believes all white
people have white privilege. She speaks her mind through her radio show Dear White People where
she bashes white people and their beliefs. Throughout the series, Sam speaks against white people as
oppressors, however, most people don t recognize that this is also a form of racism. For example, in
season one episode one, Sam is caught in a scandalous relationship with a white man. Those who look
up to her as a leader to the black community are disgusted with her. As the episode progresses Sam
tried to integrate her white boyfriend, Gabe, into her group but he is not welcomed. This implies that
one should not mix with the other side or everything you stand for is void. Although the show doesn t
blatantly state it Sam s group of colored friends are oppressing white people. Oppressing those who
oppress others does not make one right. The colored characters in this series blame all white people
for their problems and portray white people as always in the wrong. The show is focused on how
white people oppress others and further racism, however, what one doesn t recognize is that when the
group being oppressed upon retaliates with the exclusion of their oppressors it doesn t make them any
better. This message is not obvious but still heavily embedded throughout the series.

Torture In Count Olaf s The Baudelaire Children
In this novel, the Baudelaire children each face the possibility of either death, sexual assault, or

Judicial Reform Act 2005 Essay
Judicial independence is the concept that the judiciary should be separate of the legislative and
executive branches of government. It can be argued that to a moderate extent the Constitutional
Reform Act 2005 and Courts and Crime Act 2013 do enforce and protect judicial independence.
Evidence is provided within sections s.3 and s.7 of CRA 2005 along with the reforms introduced by
the Act. Other acts such as the Act of Settlement 1701 also safeguards independence.
Dame Mary Arden argued that judicial independence involved at least two things being the judge in
any individual case being free to reach the decision which he or she considers to be in accordance with

This enforces independence because it allows the Lord Chancellor and Lord Chief Justice to handle
complaints about discipline and conduct with the help of solely the Ombudsman meaning they are not
being assisted by anyone else. The JACO also protects independence for this exact reason.
One important amendment made by the Crime and Courts Act 2013 is that the Lord Chancellor s
powers to accept, reject or ask for reconsideration of recommendations for judicial appointments
below the High Court have been transferred to the Lord Chief Justice . This means the LC would then
focus on the more senior judicial positions. As the LCJ is not a political executive this would enforce
independence as the branches of government would continue to stay separate and allow judicial
diversity, which was a goal of the JAC s .
However, the Act of Settlement 1701 guarantees independence as it gives senior judges security of

This name came from the first two letters of the name Henrietta Lacks.
After Gey succeeded to find the immortal human cells, he started to sell HeLa cells without Henrietta

According to Joe Messerli, Assisting in suicides would be a violation of that oath, and it would lead to
a weakening of doctor patient trust (3). If doctors violate the oath, especially the above stated portions,
patients may be inclined to question what other standards of medicine are being breached. Assisted
suicides contravene medical ethics, as evidenced by the multiple violations of the Hippocratic Oath.
Furthermore, the practice of assisted suicide has a significant possibility of being abused. Assisted
suicides are designed to allow those who are seriously ill and suffer from extreme pain to easily end
their lives (Braddock and Tenelli 1). Those who lack support from members of their family or friends
may feel worthless and hence may desire to end their lives (Pretzer 2). If the patient has no loved ones
to confide to and receive support from, they may feel as if no one cares and therefore no reason to live
exists. Since assisted suicides are unregulated, doctors may allow patients wishing to die for
subordinate reasons, such as the one previously stated, instead of suffering reasons to commit suicide.
Moreover, Patients who want to die for psychological or emotional reasons could convince doctors to
help them end their lives (Messerli 3). As stated before, assisted suicides are not meant to allow those
with emotional or mental problems to end their lives. If someone has such problems, they should

Donald Trump Political Cartoon
Donald Trump has experienced a lot of things in his lifetime, including winning an award for Worst
Supporting Actor. One of the most recent of his experiences has been his presidential campaign.
Throughout his campaign many cartoonists have frantically been using each of his actions as material
for their political cartoons. These cartoons have the ability to spark debate and explain politics, or
other topics, in a light unattainable through any other medium. The political cartoon The Donald and
Cartoonists by John Cole exaggeratedly illustrates Donald Trump s presidential campaign through the
eyes of a cartoonist by combining imagery with commentary, referencing specific events in Trump s
campaign, and conveying his own message about Donald Trump. By employing both text and
imagery, exaggeration, and symbolism, the cartoonist John Cole was able to provide a clear image of
how he views Donald Trump. Within the single frame cartoon is a large bag labelled My Self Made
Fortune (From Daddy) that Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, and a member of the KKK all sit atop of. This
not only serves to call out Trump on how he truly acquired his four and a half billion dollar net worth,
but also symbolizes that the only thing his campaign stands on ... Show more content on

The use of large, exaggerated wording and actions creates a comical tone which appeals to Cole s
audience and purpose. John Cole wanted to communicate to people that Donald Trump is not fit to be
president as his campaign has been more of a practical joke than an actual attempt at presidency. Cole
is trying to reach people already against Trump, but also those in favor of Trump. He wants to affect
the general public that is aware of Donald Trump by persuading them to be against the candidate. John
Cole s The Donald and Cartoonists is a clear plead to turn people away from the Republican
presidential candidate, Donald

John Bunyan’s Pilgrime s Progress Essay
Many people wonder what it would be like to go from a dangerous city where they live and journey to
a plentiful heaven. This storyline is portrayed in John Bunyan s allegorical book, Pilgrim s Progress.
This fascinating story describes the life of Christian, a married man living in the City of Destruction,
who longs to travel to the Celestial City. As Christian struggles to stay on the right, though more
difficult path, I fight to focus in school and not pay attention to distracting ideas. I also fight to get
strong enough in dance to become a professional dancer, just as Christian has to climb the Hill of
Difficulty to get to the Palace Beautiful. In order for Christian to arrive at the Celestial City without
wasting away his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, I stood strong and said no, my homework was more important to me than chatting. In the
end, I realized that by focusing on what I knew was right, I set a good example for other people to
follow. While some of my friends were mad at me, and questioned me for what I had chosen, I soon
realized that taking my path would show others how being faithful towards a goal made life easier for
me to follow God. In order for Christian to reach the Palace Beautiful, he has to climb the Hill of
Difficulty. In the same way, I had to focus on my faith in order to become stronger person of God.
Similarly, Christian discusses how the better way to go was the most difficult way versus the two other
easy, but deathly paths: Better, though difficult, the Right Way to go, Than Wrong, though easy, where
the End is Woe (Bunyan 53). Formalist and Hypocrisy both take the easier paths, but they end up in a
deadly trap. While Christian struggles to get up the Hill of Difficulty, he makes it to the Palace alive.
In the same manner, I struggled to focus on my faith, school, and dance all at once. Even though it was
harder to stay strong in my faith, I learned that I soon became a stronger person of God. I chose to take
a special Bible class in which I had an hour to focus on the Bible and my faith. This helped me
towards my life goal to realize that focusing on one goal can often get me to my

Maslow s Hierarchy Of Needs
Throughout life, one s personality is a very important aspect of that individual s wellbeing. Such
characteristics are not only used by others in attempts to understand their peers, but also determine one
s own satisfaction and view of themselves. People are always attempting to change who they are for
the better, in efforts to live a more satisfying and self fulfilling life through achieving higher personal
needs. With that said, when studying the psychological basis behind one s development and change in
personality, one specific theory and stance seems to explain this phenomenon of bettering one s self;
that of Maslow s hierarchy of needs. This stance, embedded in the humanistic perspective, suggests
that individuals are motivated to self actualize, but such a task can only be accomplished if basic
human needs are obtained beforehand (Funder, 2013). With that said, there are specific requirements
presented within the hierarchy which one needs to obtain in order to ultimately improve their well
being. These five needs include an individual s physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self
actualization needs (McLeod, 2007). Considering the movie Groundhog Day, a character by the name
of Phil Connors continues to relive the same day endlessly, regardless of what he does. As a result
Connors goes through an extreme personality change which can be best described through the
standpoint of Maslow s hierarchy of needs. Phil Connor s Personality Described Phil Connors is an

Chysalids Compared To By The Waters Of Babylon Essay
Two very good stories are The Chrysalids by John Wyndham and By The Waters Of Babylon by
Stephen Vincent Benet. Both these stories are sci fi and depict what human civilizations will be like
after a nuclear holocaust. The result of the holocaust has altered the Hill People and Waknuk people s
morals and religious beliefs. The main difference between the stories is one is viewing the future as
positive the other is portraying the future negatively. The Chrysalids was a better story. It portrayed
what humans act like. In the following paragraphs many points will be looked upon to prove that The
Chrysalids is a better story.
The Chrysalids takes place in an eastern part of Canada called Labrador. It is set in the future after a

Petra, David s little sister starts communicating with a lady from a place called Sealand. The people
from Sealand then come to save them. Near the end of the novel the Sealand people arrive and save
them. When they finally arrive in Sealand David realizes that the dream he had was of Sealand.
The story By the Waters of Babylon is about a young man named John. He is the son of a priest in his
community. He ventures off into the dead places. While sleeping in an old building from the old
people, he has a dream. It is about a city with bright lights and funny looking objects. He then seeks
out this city of the gods. On his quest he finds the truth, about the old people. They did not have magic
but they had technology instead. John brings back the news and tells his father. His father accepts the
truth and they slowly tell their community.
The Chrysalids and By The Waters Of Babylon also have many similarities in plot. The main character
in both stories travels to forbidden lands. Also the main characters were both sons of highly respected
men in their communities. Both of the characters end up with a better life in the end. Both characters
have dreams about the truth which makes them go on quests.
These novels had some differences in plot as well, but not too many. One main difference is that the
societies view dead places differently. Waknuk views dead places as a place of the devil in comparison

Argument On Lying
I m not upset that you lied to me, I m upset that from now on I can t believe you. These were the
famous words Friedrich Nietzsche spoke and almost everyone in this world can probably relate to
it.Lying seems so universal, but no one can really agree if it s warranted or not. After reviewing a few
opinionated and factual articles on lying, the opinionated conclusion is lying is almost always never
justified unless it is to protect someone from getting hurt. In A Philosopher On Lying , by Mary Alder,
a philosopher named, Immanuel Kant, has his perspective on lying as, Don t tell someone a lie, Kant
said, because then you are not treating that person with respect, as an individual. .This statement at
first glance may seem valid, but let s take a closer look.If your mom had breast cancer and she told
you about it but, said not to mention it to your dad for fear that he might get a heart attack, what would
you do? Especially what shall you do if he asks you if you know anything about your mom acting
weird lately? The majority of you reading this most likely have switched sides against Immanuel
Kant, but, for those who think, Well, surely he must have had made an exception about protecting
someone s life, you are wrong. Immanuel Kant believes, ...it s not about the size of the lie any lie,
even one to save someone s life, is dangerous. so if he was in that situation, he wouldn t care if it
risked his father s life. Therefore, that is the flaw in Immanuel Kant s argument,

The Factors And Consequences Of The Stanford Marshmallow...
The experiment I am going to analyse is the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment. The Stanford
Marshmallow Experiment was conducted by Walter Mischel and his colleagues. The experiment
which started in the late 1960 s had results which became important when Walter Mischel turned it
into a longitudinal study. The Stanford Marshmallow Experiment is a test of gratification, and the
effects of being patient and not giving in to your desires. When Mischel started this experiment he
planned on only seeing the results of the original study but then when he realised that patience as a
child could have a effect on the personality as an adult he conducted further research. The Stanford
Marshmallow Experiment was that Walter Mischel, a Stanford University ... Show more content on

Their is a control group when the participants in the experiment are receiving a treatment to see the
change. This is why their was only one experimental group. The independent variable of the
experiment was the children s patience and the dependent variable which depended on this patience as
a child was their success and personality as an adult. Mischells study did contain many
generalisations, he discarded the effects of both nature and nurture. He discarded nature when he
tested only Stanford University faculty and graduate student s children. What he didn t realise that
these children had different genes than a child whose parent s never even went to school. Then he also
didn t consider that children are brought up differently and have different experiences which would
influence them into acting differently. The question Walter Mischel was also general and it can be put
into many situations. The general idea behind delaying gratification and then achieving more is very
simple. My desire, or gratification, while writing this research paper is to play a game, watch
television and then sleep but delaying this gratification would allow me to get a good grade in

  • 2. The Growing Concern on Food Safety There is growing concern about food safety and especially about inputs of pathogenic microorganisms with possible implications for human health and the environment [1]. Microbial activity is a primary mode of deterioration of many foods and is often responsible for the loss of quality and safety. Concern over pathogenic and spoilage microorganisms in foods is increasing due to the increase in outbreaks of foodborne disease [2]. It has been estimated that as many as 30% of people in the industrialized countries suffer from food borne diseases each year caused by microbes [3]. Food additives have been used for centuries in the food processing practices for several purposes including the prevention of microbial growth and increase in the food shelf lives [4]. Due to the excessive use of food preservatives which some of them are doubtful to be carcinogenic and teratogenic and also increasing consumer demand to natural foods with a long shelf life and without chemical preservatives, food producers trend to replace chemical preservatives with natural forms such as oils and herbal extracts as antibacterial additives [5, 6]. In the recent years, efforts have been devoted to find new antimicrobial materials from natural resources for food preservation [7]. Reports indicated that many extracts and essential oils of edible plants had properties to prevent against a wide range of fungal contamination of foods [5, 7, 8, 9, 10]. • 3. The Influences of the Main Characters in The Scarlet... Who is Arthur Dimmsdale? Do we, as readers, ever fully understand the extent of Dimmsdale s character provided to us by Nathaniel Hawthorne? In the novel, The Scarlet Letter, the on the surface themes of sin and suffering are very clear, but the development of the different characters and their own personal challenges plays a big factor (and maybe even the biggest factor) to the moral of the story rather than what is shown in plain sight. There are three main characters that reflect the different themes and help progress the plot. Hester Prynne is the reason for the conflict within the text, being the woman cast off from society because of an adulterous relationship that bore her a child. She is sometimes argued to be the heroine , but is more frequently seen as a symbol of independence and comfortableness outside of the social norm. She is the only character with the ability to recognize, acknowledge, and move forward with her sin, which is important to understand as the complexity of the other main characters are examined. Roger Chillingsworth is hardly a character to speculate in regards to good nature because he completely lacks in that area. The Leach , so he is called, is determined to get revenge because of his wounded pride and his already present evil nature, making his sin the blackest of them all. Being Hester Prynne s husband before he left, he comes back bearing a different name and learns of the mischief that had been taking place while he was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Theory Of Scientific Abuse Scientific Abuse Darwin, the name widely recognized as the grandfather of evolution, describes evolution as organ, instinct, or any whole being...arriving at its present state by many graduated steps (Darwin 158). The struggle for survival forces organisms to evolve gradually and adapt to their environment, therefore increasing their chances of survival. Darwin furthers his theories into the origins of species in which he explains how several breeds to which each has attended, are descended from aboriginally distinct species (Darwin 103). The observation of the animals suggests that they further originate from a single ancestor. Darwin s points are biological in nature. Spencer then points out how the evolved division of labor characterizes an advanced nation and the more society move towards specialization, the better it is as a whole. Similarly, Galton talks about the evolution of society as whole, however, he brings up methodologies in which society can be improved. He states The possibility of improving the race of a nation depends on the power of increasing the productivity of the best stock (Galton 24). In simple terms, the level at which society improves is determined by how well the upper class can reproduce. Galton is, thereby, implying selective parenthood. In theory, as generation continue, the increase in intellects would result in a more able society. Adding on to Galton, in the early 20th century, Davenport puts the use of human harvest in his study of eugenics. He singles out the criminal minded, the feeble minded, the mentally ill, and the impoverished groups in society. He proposes control by the state of propagation of the mentally incompetent (Davenport 4). He does, however, qualify that he does not mean control by means of extermination, but sterilization of the mentally incompetent is not out of reach. • 6. Ancient People And Agriculture Ancient people set a building block that we today still build upon. There are many ways ancient people have done this, such as developing spoken language and inventing farming/agriculture. I think that farming and agriculture had the biggest impact of all on society, from ancient to modern times, because it helped people have a permanent home, develop more specialized jobs, and create new technologies. Before I start talking about farming and agriculture, I will explain a little about the history of it. Farming and agriculture began during the Neolithic Era, or the New Stone Age, about 10,000 years ago, first in Southwest Asia. The reason farming and agriculture was now possible was because the Ice Ages ended. The Ice Ages were when there were long periods of freezing weather. During this time, the whole ground would be covered in ice, and the sea levels were very low. The water was so low that strips of land, called land bridges, let people cross rivers, seas, and maybe even oceans. Then, a warm ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Farming and agriculture also gave people more freedom, because now, since there is a reliable source of food, farms, there was much more free time that they could spend on hobbies. The food surplus also freed people to specialize in jobs. People who are talented at something, could choose that job, so they could be as productive to the community as possible. This drastic increase was due to Muslims being subject to unjust discrimination in the United States caused by negative stereotypes, prejudice and misconceptions which effectively became more widespread after September 11, 2001. There had been a smaller Capitalist revolution in February that year but the October Revolution completely usurped it. After the October Revolution both Tatlin and Malevich opened up art schools. Malevich s Suprematist school was similar in style but not ideology to the De Stijl movement in Holland, while the Constructivist school of Tatlin s had links to the German Bauhaus. The October revolution had been a primarily proletariat revolution and proletarians have proven to be somewhat negative in their attitude to new, radical confronting art styles and this was no exception. Both schools realised they had to prove their worth, so to speak. The new communist government saw artists as elite. A few things transpired to change the soviet government s ideas about these artists. Rodchenko was proud of the fact that the leftist artists had been the first to come to work with the Bolshevik comrades. There was a Constructivist manifesto released in 1922,( when Constructivism had reached its Zenith and had started ever so slowly to decline,) stating that the movement as a whole was trying to build the intellectual material production of Communist culture . The general mood among the Avant Garde was one of completely embracing the Bolshevik ideal. Perhaps this is why they were given so much freedom. • 27. Symbolism In Cry The Beloved Country The truth is that our Christian civilization is riddled through and through with dilemma. We believe in the brotherhood of man, but we do not want it in South Africa. We believe that God endows men with diverse gifts, and that human life depends for its fullness on their employment and enjoyment, but we are afraid to explore this belief too deeply (Paton 187). These are some of the words spoken by Arthur Jarvis, one of the key characters in the book Cry, the Beloved Country by Alan Paton. These words exemplify the racial prejudice, hypocrisy, and condemnation discerned by white South Africans. Throughout this novel, Paton unveils the realities of racial prejudice and oppression through the use of literary elements such as irony and symbolism; thus, this allows Paton to strengthen the delineation of hypocrisy, dichotomy, and and prejudice that is instilled in society. One of the most significant literary element used by Paton is symbolism. Symbolism allows Paton to convey the political division that occurs within South Africa, specifically Ndotsheni. Paton conveys this message using the Titihoya bird. In the novel, the Titihoya is displayed singing near James Jarvis s wealthy farm in Ndotsheni above the hills, conveniently named the High Place . Kumalo describes this place, saying There is a lovely road that runs from Ixopo into the hills. These hills are grass covered and rolling, and they are lovely beyond any singing of it (Paton 1). In this part of the land, the land is fertile and there is an abundant source of water and food, allowing for the Titihoya bird to thrive. In aberration, Kumalo describes the valley of Ndotsheni named Umzimkulu as [...] You look down on one of the fairest valleys of Africa. About you there is grass and bracken and you may hear the forlorn crying of the Titihoya, one of the birds of the veld. Below you is the valley of the Umzimkulu (Paton 1). • 31. Analysis Of Dear White People The television series Dear White People by Justin Simien portrays stereotypical problems of racial identity in today s society, however, the creator imbeds the series with hidden messages that are not particularly intended. The show exemplifies how people of color try to deal with living in a society where they are not particularly welcome in a place of elite higher education. It follows a group of colored students as they navigate through life in college attending a primarily white Ivy League university. In the series, the creator implements the ideas of two sided racism, political correctness, and misplaced power. Although this show suggests it is about white people and their faults, Simien portrays two sided racism in the series although it is not addressed head on. The show s protagonist, Sam White who is also a woman, is characterized as the angry black chic on campus because she believes all white people have white privilege. She speaks her mind through her radio show Dear White People where she bashes white people and their beliefs. Throughout the series, Sam speaks against white people as oppressors, however, most people don t recognize that this is also a form of racism. For example, in season one episode one, Sam is caught in a scandalous relationship with a white man. Those who look up to her as a leader to the black community are disgusted with her. As the episode progresses Sam tried to integrate her white boyfriend, Gabe, into her group but he is not welcomed. This implies that one should not mix with the other side or everything you stand for is void. Although the show doesn t blatantly state it Sam s group of colored friends are oppressing white people. Oppressing those who oppress others does not make one right. The colored characters in this series blame all white people for their problems and portray white people as always in the wrong. The show is focused on how white people oppress others and further racism, however, what one doesn t recognize is that when the group being oppressed upon retaliates with the exclusion of their oppressors it doesn t make them any better. This message is not obvious but still heavily embedded throughout the series. In Dear White People , political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

According to Joe Messerli, Assisting in suicides would be a violation of that oath, and it would lead to a weakening of doctor patient trust (3). If doctors violate the oath, especially the above stated portions, patients may be inclined to question what other standards of medicine are being breached. Assisted suicides contravene medical ethics, as evidenced by the multiple violations of the Hippocratic Oath. Furthermore, the practice of assisted suicide has a significant possibility of being abused. Assisted suicides are designed to allow those who are seriously ill and suffer from extreme pain to easily end their lives (Braddock and Tenelli 1). Those who lack support from members of their family or friends may feel worthless and hence may desire to end their lives (Pretzer 2). If the patient has no loved ones to confide to and receive support from, they may feel as if no one cares and therefore no reason to live exists. Since assisted suicides are unregulated, doctors may allow patients wishing to die for subordinate reasons, such as the one previously stated, instead of suffering reasons to commit suicide. Moreover, Patients who want to die for psychological or emotional reasons could convince doctors to help them end their lives (Messerli 3). As stated before, assisted suicides are not meant to allow those with emotional or mental problems to end their lives. If someone has such problems, they should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Donald Trump Political Cartoon Donald Trump has experienced a lot of things in his lifetime, including winning an award for Worst Supporting Actor. One of the most recent of his experiences has been his presidential campaign. Throughout his campaign many cartoonists have frantically been using each of his actions as material for their political cartoons. These cartoons have the ability to spark debate and explain politics, or other topics, in a light unattainable through any other medium. The political cartoon The Donald and Cartoonists by John Cole exaggeratedly illustrates Donald Trump s presidential campaign through the eyes of a cartoonist by combining imagery with commentary, referencing specific events in Trump s campaign, and conveying his own message about Donald Trump. By employing both text and imagery, exaggeration, and symbolism, the cartoonist John Cole was able to provide a clear image of how he views Donald Trump. Within the single frame cartoon is a large bag labelled My Self Made Fortune (From Daddy) that Donald Trump, Sarah Palin, and a member of the KKK all sit atop of. This not only serves to call out Trump on how he truly acquired his four and a half billion dollar net worth, but also symbolizes that the only thing his campaign stands on ... John Cole wanted to communicate to people that Donald Trump is not fit to be president as his campaign has been more of a practical joke than an actual attempt at presidency. Cole is trying to reach people already against Trump, but also those in favor of Trump. He wants to affect the general public that is aware of Donald Trump by persuading them to be against the candidate. John Cole s The Donald and Cartoonists is a clear plead to turn people away from the Republican presidential candidate, Donald ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. John Bunyan’s Pilgrime s Progress Essay Many people wonder what it would be like to go from a dangerous city where they live and journey to a plentiful heaven. This storyline is portrayed in John Bunyan s allegorical book, Pilgrim s Progress. This fascinating story describes the life of Christian, a married man living in the City of Destruction, who longs to travel to the Celestial City. As Christian struggles to stay on the right, though more difficult path, I fight to focus in school and not pay attention to distracting ideas. I also fight to get strong enough in dance to become a professional dancer, just as Christian has to climb the Hill of Difficulty to get to the Palace Beautiful. However, I stood strong and said no, my homework was more important to me than chatting. In the end, I realized that by focusing on what I knew was right, I set a good example for other people to follow. While some of my friends were mad at me, and questioned me for what I had chosen, I soon realized that taking my path would show others how being faithful towards a goal made life easier for me to follow God. In order for Christian to reach the Palace Beautiful, he has to climb the Hill of Difficulty. In the same way, I had to focus on my faith in order to become stronger person of God. Similarly, Christian discusses how the better way to go was the most difficult way versus the two other easy, but deathly paths: Better, though difficult, the Right Way to go, Than Wrong, though easy, where the End is Woe (Bunyan 53). Formalist and Hypocrisy both take the easier paths, but they end up in a deadly trap. While Christian struggles to get up the Hill of Difficulty, he makes it to the Palace alive. In the same manner, I struggled to focus on my faith, school, and dance all at once. Even though it was harder to stay strong in my faith, I learned that I soon became a stronger person of God. I chose to take a special Bible class in which I had an hour to focus on the Bible and my faith. This helped me towards my life goal to realize that focusing on one goal can often get me to my ... • 44. Maslow s Hierarchy Of Needs Throughout life, one s personality is a very important aspect of that individual s wellbeing. Such characteristics are not only used by others in attempts to understand their peers, but also determine one s own satisfaction and view of themselves. People are always attempting to change who they are for the better, in efforts to live a more satisfying and self fulfilling life through achieving higher personal needs. With that said, when studying the psychological basis behind one s development and change in personality, one specific theory and stance seems to explain this phenomenon of bettering one s self; that of Maslow s hierarchy of needs. This stance, embedded in the humanistic perspective, suggests that individuals are motivated to self actualize, but such a task can only be accomplished if basic human needs are obtained beforehand (Funder, 2013). With that said, there are specific requirements presented within the hierarchy which one needs to obtain in order to ultimately improve their well being. These five needs include an individual s physiological, safety, love, esteem, and self actualization needs (McLeod, 2007). Considering the movie Groundhog Day, a character by the name of Phil Connors continues to relive the same day endlessly, regardless of what he does. As a result Connors goes through an extreme personality change which can be best described through the standpoint of Maslow s hierarchy of needs. Phil Connor s Personality Described Phil Connors is an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Chysalids Compared To By The Waters Of Babylon Essay Two very good stories are The Chrysalids by John Wyndham and By The Waters Of Babylon by Stephen Vincent Benet. Both these stories are sci fi and depict what human civilizations will be like after a nuclear holocaust. The result of the holocaust has altered the Hill People and Waknuk people s morals and religious beliefs. The main difference between the stories is one is viewing the future as positive the other is portraying the future negatively. The Chrysalids was a better story. It portrayed what humans act like. In the following paragraphs many points will be looked upon to prove that The Chrysalids is a better story. The Chrysalids takes place in an eastern part of Canada called Labrador. Also the main characters were both sons of highly respected men in their communities. Both of the characters end up with a better life in the end. • 46. Argument On Lying I m not upset that you lied to me, I m upset that from now on I can t believe you. These were the famous words Friedrich Nietzsche spoke and almost everyone in this world can probably relate to it.Lying seems so universal, but no one can really agree if it s warranted or not. After reviewing a few opinionated and factual articles on lying, the opinionated conclusion is lying is almost always never justified unless it is to protect someone from getting hurt. In A Philosopher On Lying , by Mary Alder, a philosopher named, Immanuel Kant, has his perspective on lying as, Don t tell someone a lie, Kant said, because then you are not treating that person with respect, as an individual. .This statement at first glance may seem valid, but let s take a closer look.If your mom had breast cancer and she told you about it but, said not to mention it to your dad for fear that he might get a heart attack, what would you do? Especially what shall you do if he asks you if you know anything about your mom acting weird lately? The majority of you reading this most likely have switched sides against Immanuel Kant, but, for those who think, Well, surely he must have had made an exception about protecting someone s life, you are wrong. Immanuel Kant believes, ...it s not about the size of the lie any lie, even one to save someone s life, is dangerous. so if he was in that situation, he wouldn t care if it risked his father s life. Therefore, that is the flaw in Immanuel Kant s argument, ... • 47. The Factors And Consequences Of The Stanford Marshmallow... The experiment I am going to analyse is the Stanford Marshmallow Experiment. The Stanford Marshmallow Experiment was conducted by Walter Mischel and his colleagues. The experiment which started in the late 1960 s had results which became important when Walter Mischel turned it into a longitudinal study. The Stanford Marshmallow Experiment is a test of gratification, and the effects of being patient and not giving in to your desires. When Mischel started this experiment he planned on only seeing the results of the original study but then when he realised that patience as a child could have a effect on the personality as an adult he conducted further research. The Stanford Marshmallow Experiment was that Walter Mischel, a Stanford University ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their is a control group when the participants in the experiment are receiving a treatment to see the change. This is why their was only one experimental group. The independent variable of the experiment was the children s patience and the dependent variable which depended on this patience as a child was their success and personality as an adult. Mischells study did contain many generalisations, he discarded the effects of both nature and nurture. He discarded nature when he tested only Stanford University faculty and graduate student s children. What he didn t realise that these children had different genes than a child whose parent s never even went to school. Then he also didn t consider that children are brought up differently and have different experiences which would influence them into acting differently. The question Walter Mischel was also general and it can be put into many situations. The general idea behind delaying gratification and then achieving more is very simple. My desire, or gratification, while writing this research paper is to play a game, watch television and then sleep but delaying this gratification would allow me to get a good grade in ...
