GreenSpur Wind manufacturers have designed a new low-cost ferrite-based direct-drive permanent magnet generator (DD-PMG) for the wind turbine market. It is the only company in the world known to be developing a ferrite-based design capable of multi-Megawatt power generation.
Eliminating the price and supply risks associated with using rare earth magnets the design has been optimised through extensive R&D that identified a highly innovative magnetic arrangement, which delivers maximum output for the lowest material cost and weight.
In this presentation, GreenSpur Wind showcased how they have progressed their PEMD development rapidly through research and design stages and how they plan to work with a dynamic UK supply chain to bring their highly disruptive technology to a multi-£bn global wind energy market.

Energy efficiency obligation schemes (EEOs) are used in many EU countries as a policy measure to reach energy efficiency targets. Some of the first EEO (UK, Italy, France, Denmark) have been capable to reach positive results over the years, as shown by the ENSPOL and EPATEE projects.
The Italian mechanism, in particular, is an interesting example of white certificate scheme (WhC), since it is one of the most long-lasting schemes (operatively started in 2005), has ambitious targets, covers all sectors and energy efficiency solutions, and has many flexibility options in place (e.g. non-obliged parties, tradable market, bankability, etc.).
Another point of interest is WhC development over the years. In the first phase, most of the projects were related to buildings with deemed savings as energy savings assessment method. Then the industrial sector rose constantly, till covering 80% of the savings in 2014, mostly assessed through metered savings procedures. In the last three years deemed savings procedures have started to recover, while metered savings have remained the most used energy savings evaluation procedure. This last development was not expected and is mainly due to some regulatory decision and to the modification of the assessment of additionality for many industrial projects categories, due to the diffusion of certain energy efficiency solutions and to changes in the methodological approach.
The presentation, based on a paper presented at the IEPPEC conference in Vienna, illustrates the issues that have arisen over the recent years, and the decisions taken to address them through a major redesign of the Italian scheme that has been introduced with new ministerial guidelines in 2017: many aspects – such as targets, baseline and additionality, saving assessment, and measurement, verification and control procedures – has been deeply affected. The presentation will cover such themes under an evaluation point of view, highlighting the savings achieved with respect to the national targets, how indicators like additional energy savings, costs, and employment have evolved over time, the role of the involved stakeholders (utilities, ESCOs, end-users, etc.), and the effects of tight verification and control procedures.

ISCF Driving the Electric Revolution - Building Regional Centres of ExcellenceKTN
This latest competition will award up to £30 million to build regional centres of excellence for the development, prototyping and scale-up of power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD) technologies.
This competition aims to provide funding to establish the centres, building on existing capabilities and expertise where it already exists across the UK. The centres will support the industrialisation of PEMD technologies to help accelerate the growth of the UK’s supply chains for PEMD. The centres must be open access facilities that support the development, prototyping and scaling of PEMD technologies and manufacturing processes.
ISCF funding will support:
- The investment in capital equipment needed to create the centres
- Funding for operational costs to enable the centres to become established up to the end 31 March 2024
Details from the competition scope will be posted on Innovate UK’s website during October. The competition will open on 21st October. The Innovate UK pages will include all the details potential applicants need to know, including dates for submissions.
The Driving the Electric Revolution Challenge was launched in July 2019 by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy as part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF). The ISCF provides funding and support to UK businesses and researchers. The fund is designed to ensure that research and innovation takes centre stage in the government’s Industrial Strategy.
The fund is being administered by UK Research and Innovation.
The Driving the Electric Revolution Challenge is an investment of £80 million over 4 years. It was set up to help UK businesses seize the opportunities presented by the transition to a low carbon economy. It aims to ensure the UK leads the world in the design, development and manufacture of power electronics, machines and drives (PEMD) across 7 sectors.
The challenge will create world-leading supply chains in the UK and expertise for the manufacture of Power Electronics, Machines and Drives (PEMD).

One of the key issues facing the roll out of carbon capture and storage (CCS) will be the availability of commercial finance to support the significant capital investment needs of the industry. Whilst a small number of projects have begun early discussions with debt finance providers, the appetite for, and understanding of, CCS in the financial sector has not been widely tested to date. With this in mind, the Global CCS Institute recently commissioned Societie Generale to take the pulse of the international finance community to determine the awareness, understanding and appetite for financing CCS projects with debt.
In this webinar, Allan Baker, Global Head of Power Advisory & Project Finance at Societe Generale, presented the findings of this exercise and discuss key issues for financial institutions in the CCS sector, potentially available sources of finance for projects and how to unlock this liquidity.

This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

The optimization of hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems plays a pivotal role in utilizing natural resources effectively. This initiative not only benefits humanity but also fosters environmental sustainability. The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Additionally, the study provides valuable insights for advancing energy research in economically viable areas. Recommendations included conducting site-specific assessments, utilizing advanced modeling tools, implementing regular maintenance protocols, and enhancing communication among system components.

CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
