When it comes to offshore wind energy technology, most innovations are dedicated to foundations or construction techniques to lower LCOE by lowering CapEx and OpEx, but we are reaching an inflection point and AEP needs to be prioritized. Wind park controls and operations methods for revenue and power maximization being developed for onshore wind will be fundamentally necessary to leverage in order to drive maximum offshore LCOE benefit as the CapEx impact on reducing LCOE slows down in the coming years.
Here we contemplate some of the likely future technologies based on an analysis of the patent landscape. Many innovations have been patented but not yet made commercially available, due to the time-frame for commercial acceptance as well as testing and certification. Additional description of each technology is shown below, including the order we believe will have the greatest impact on LCOE, AEP, CapEx, and OpEx. More insight and analysis on these technology trends will be shared in our Global Wind Technology Trends Report, due out in Q3, 2017.

Advances in computational electromagnetic tools have made electromagnetic (EM) simulations possible for various applications. Now numerical simulations can be performed to evaluate the effects of antenna design, placement, radiation hazard, EMC/EMI, etc. for wide ranging industry applications. Numerical approaches that include full wave techniques such as Method of Moments (MoM), Multilevel Fast Multipole Method (MLFMM) and asymptotic techniques such as Physical Optics (PO) and Uniform Theory of Diffraction (UTD) are being utilized to solve many challenging problems that were not possible in the past.
Explaining recent renewable energy auction outcomes in Europe Leonardo ENERGY
Recent record-low auction prices for renewables in Europe have made the news. But what is behind them and why are there such differences between countries? This webinar analyses and compares recent auction outcomes for PV, wind onshore and wind offshore in different European Member States and discusses lessons learnt. The analysis builds on Ecofys market insights and country case studies conducted within the AURES project (Auctions for Renewable Energy Support in the EU).

The economics of reducing the cost of energy by 13% revenuesSentient Science
At what “speed” is your digitalization effort? There is no dispute, digitalization will play a key role in improving the sustainability of renewable energy sources through efficiency. The question remains – Where are you? While the industry has embraced the importance, water cooler conversations continue - How to monetize the true value of the data from digitalization?
The webinar outlines:
• How digitalization is applied across all corporate business units: asset management, operations management, risk management and supply chain management to reduce the cost of energy by up to 13%
• An industry operator case study on monetizing your digitalization efforts and understand the true ROI
• A digitalization value statement to enable operations management can provide a short-term watch list from 0-12 months enabling early detection prior to consequential damage beyond an operator's current capabilities – attributes to 2-3% of cost avoidance or cost savings.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.

18. KIC InnoEnergyOffshore wind innovation to 2030
Hot topics:
• Turbines with a higher rated capacity and more efficient rotors that are more
reliable and deliver increased energy production
• Mass-produced support structures for use in deeper water
• Enhanced construction and OMS methods using bespoke vessels and
equipment which can operate in a wider range of conditions, and
• Greater upfront investment in wind farm development, both in terms of site
investigations and engineering studies.

3.2 Summary and conclusions
These hot topics show how the industry is maturing in its approach to
innovation.
Game-changing innovations could reduce the cost of energy further if they
can incorporate lessons from conventional offshore wind and use the current
supply chain.
