Radial tires were invented in 1949 by Michelin engineer Marius Mignol. Radial tires have a particular design that improves safety and comfort compared to traditional bias ply tires. Radial tires are constructed by combining rubber chemicals in a machine called a banbury. Six components, including the tread, ply, belts, sidewalls, liner and beads, are assembled into an uncured green tire. The green tire then undergoes vulcanization, which uses heat and pressure to transform the soft rubber into a tough, durable tire.
