Aspects of Documentary
4. Conclusion:
Overall none of the aspects of our documentary were
below 4, which shows that the aspects of our
documentary were good. People found that the
documentary was more entertaining and had a
professional feel, which suggests that we have been
able to successfully follow the codes of conventions of
documentaries, because documentaries cannot appear
to be boring in the first 5 minutes, as people would lose
interest and switch over. We have learnt from our target
audience that these aspects were liked better. These
are more content based aspects, which suggests that
our documentary contained professional based content.
5. Do you think our documentary is similar to other
professional documentaries in terms of the

In terms of this question, style referred to the overall feel of the documentary, and how
well they think that it conforms to the conventions they imagine in their head when they
watch a documentary. This question has showed us that most people thought that it did
with a small percentage thought otherwise, which suggests we could have been stricter
with our following of codes and conventions of documentaries.

7. Conclusion
8 out of the 12 people who did this questionnaire said they would
continue to watch this documentary after the first 5 minutes. When
asked why, 1 person said that it was relevant to their age
range, and 3 people said that it was an interesting topic. On the
other hand other people said that they were not sure, with reasons
such as the scheduling of other programmes, or that they don’t
particularly find the topic interesting as they do not tan. This
suggests that within our target audience, people who do tan were
more likely going to watch this than people who don’t associate
themselves with the tanning culture. On the other hand this could
suggest that more careful consideration of the scheduling and
placement of the documentary was necessary, whether it would be
better to inherit or pre-echo the audience. I feel this could have
been improved if we perhaps included something in our
documentary to appeal to those who don’t tan, to cover a wider
audience.

Everyone that we asked liked our documentary which suggests that we aimed for
the correct target audience.
9. Is there anything that you think could
have been improved?
When asked this question, people suggested that the cutaways
could have been longer and that in some places this made it
difficult to understand what they were. In other parts people
suggested the sound levels could have been improved, for
example the music bed of ‘When I Grow Up’ could have been
louder, adjusting the sound levels more carefully would have fixed
this. Also people felt that it was a bit one sided, siding with the
negatives of tanning and suggestions were made to include more
of the benefits of tanning. After watching the documentary I can see
how people came to this conclusion, and this would have been
improved if we had a voiceover or an interview commenting on the
fact one of the benefits of tanning is that people do feel better for
example.

11. Conclusion
Those that said they would watch the documentary due to the radio
trailer said that they liked the music bed, which they felt was
relevant to the themes of the documentary. However the 2 people
that said they would not watch the documentary said this because
they don’t listen to the radio much, and when they do they don’t pay
attention to the adverts, and would prefer to change over when they
came on. This implies that the radio trailer would not be successful
in targeting all of the target audience, as some people will not listen
to the radio/ignore the trailers, which is something that we would be
unable to affect ourselves.

Information Given Sound Professional Feel
We learnt from this question that our radio trailer is effective in giving the
audience the information that they needed, and the sound and the professional
feel were still good, overall making a good trailer.

14. Conclusion
2 People said that the print advert was interesting
as they reason to why they would watch the
documentary. Other people commented that the
advert was eye catching and unique, which shows
that the conventions were followed, and that the
advert stands out. People who put that they would
not watch it said that ‘it wouldn’t interest me as I do
not tan’ and another saying the imaged scare her.
Combining this with feedback received from other
sources I think it would have been better if the tan
worked like a progressive clock face, so would
have been improved reversed.
