This document analyzes the responses to a 10-question media questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed to gauge interest in a supernatural/paranormal mockumentary among the target audience. Most respondents watch Netflix regularly and have seen Netflix documentaries and mockumentaries like The Office. While BBC One was a slightly more popular suggested viewing platform than Netflix, the difference was small. Respondents expressed interest in an observational or participatory style documentary and preferred a lighthearted presentation. They also indicated they would be interested in the proposed supernatural topic if it was well-executed. The conclusions were that the target audience is receptive to the idea and the project can proceed with further planning.

Question 1
From 1997, Netflix has become one of
the most popular, if not the most popular
way to access any form of film. Whether it
be TV series, trailers, films or
documentaries. Amongst ourselves, our
group came to realization that the
majority of documentaries we watch are
on Netflix as they are so accessible and
in such high quality. By the results of this
question, it seems our target audience
would agree.

Question 2
The majority of those who participated
helped the process to confirm the
channel we would present on would be
considering if the majority of our
participants watch Netflix Original
Series’. This ‘telltale’ question allows
us to see that our documentary has the
possibility of having high success and
a big audience.

Question 3
Again, this ‘telltale’ question proves
immediately that our target audience
have previously watched Netflix
documentaries and therefore, potentially
would be interested to watch ours.
However, the gap between the ‘Yes’ and
‘No’ answer is closer than preferred. This
would mean we would need to produce
an effective and engaging documentary
which could hopefully intrigue our viewers
to watch it.

Question 4
We wanted to gauge our audience
even further to see if they would
choose our potential channel over its
competitors. By only one vote, BBC
One seemed the most popular way to
view a documentary. Although it did
overtake our potential choice, it wasn’t
a big difference and therefore won’t
make much of a difference in our final
choice.

Question 5
For our documentary, we all wanted to
participate within the filming process
so were delighted to see our target
audience would voluntarily watch this
type of mode. Observational was the
most voted response and we will take
this into consideration in order to
create a hybrid style for our
documentary as well as reflexive.

Question 6
For us to be able to physically produce
our idea and gain a positive response, it
was very important for us to ask our
target audience if they would watch a
supernatural/paranormal documentary.
Regardless of the channel or mode, if the
viewer isn’t interested in what the
documentary is about, it won’t be
watched. Relieved by the response, we
are able to continue to produce our
documentary on the topic we desire.

Question 7
Question 7 and 8 are both questions
we wanted to ask our audience for our
group to be able to gauge what type of
atmosphere we could produce. We
predicted the responses to be as they
turned out, luckily as the participants
liked the idea of our documentary,
there’s more chance they would like it
as a light hearted presentation.

Question 8
As implied before, the atmosphere is an
important aspect to an audience to be
able to engage with our documentary and
stay ‘hooked’. We were aiming to have
our documentary as a mockumentary.
Luckily, the audience agreed to the idea
and gave an overwhelming response for
us which would mean we can go in the
direction we wanted and have our
viewers enjoy it. We liked the idea of
having a mockumentary style as we
found it an interesting/intriguing way to
convey our topic.

Question 9
As a continuation from Question 8, we
wanted to further gauge what previous
mockumentaries our audience had
watched. In this way, we were able to see
what they are interested in when viewing
a mockumentary and our group could
view these mockumentaries and see what
they individually did to make them stand
out in the market. ‘The Office’ and ‘Come
Fly With Me’ were the most popular
responses and we will take those into
consideration when we begin filming and
scripting our project.

Question 10
Our last question was a very relevant and
important one for us to be able to really see if
our target audience would be at all interested
into watching our documentary. Luckily, we
are able to go forward with our production as
the votes show our target audience would be
interested. Adding to this, the answer
‘Depends if it is handled well’ plays a major
key for our process as we would need to
further research into what the best way to
produce our mockumentary would be in order
for it to be a success. Holding a focus group
would be an effective way of helping our
planning.

Conclusion
Our questionnaire was sent out to all genders in order for us to
gain an all rounded response for our planning stage
Pleased with our responses, we are able to make a
supernatural/paranormal mockumentary with a high potential of
interest and success from our target audience
Things we need to consider is how to include an observational
mode into our mockumentary as well as participatory
We will also need to further research into whether our target
audience would be interested directly in a supernatural
documentary with a light hearted atmosphere
Overall, we were content with the feedback we received and can
now begin the ‘nitty gritty’ planning for our production
