The student has learned that planning and time management are important for organizing work and avoiding rushing. Research helped with planning their magazine concept and content. Drafting skills improved from gaining a clear vision. Photographic skills like using plain backgrounds and varied shot types improved. Editing skills in Photoshop and layout skills in InDesign developed. The student thinks they improved from the preliminary task by applying learned skills and addressing prior issues.

1. Looking Back At Your
Preliminary Task, What Do You
Feel You Have Learnt In The
Progression From It To The
Full Task?
2. Planning & Time
I have learnt that planning and time is very important because it
makes you all organised and you don’t have to rush about
finishing things that you were meant to have planned. Also it
shows the amount of time you have left to finish getting
everything together.
The research helped with the planning because it helped me
create idea for my magazine and the type of genre I wanted to
make. All of the research also brought together what I should put
on my magazine’s double page spread, by looking at other pop
magazines that were in the genre that I wanted to do I found that
on their double pages they did do interviews on them.
The drafting for my magazine I did get the idea quicker and so
this helped my drafting and what I wanted it to look like. What I
did better altogether in this magazine for planning and time was
the preparation for it all and that I got a clear idea from all of it of
what I want my magazine to look like and how it was going to be
laid out.
3. Technological Photography
Skills
For my photos that I took I made sure that I had a plain
background that I could edit onto if I needed to. The angles
didn’t really change much apart from I took a zoomed in shot of
the models face of her looking down, I think this made an
effective shot.
The shot types I did I made sure they changed a little bit
instead of just having one type of pose. I wanted the shots to get
across as fun which I think I achieved well. I made sure with the
lighting that it was used to make sure that the face stands out. I
edited some of these pictures to a white background and also
changed some of the vibrance and saturation.
In the preliminary task I didn’t take many shots but I only took
one and the picture wasn’t edited as much as the ones for my
main magazine. This helped my editing skills and develop and
improve them.
4. Conventions Of Magazines
The conventions of my magazine was that I used pull out quotes
on my double page spread whilst “Billboard” magazines, this I
used because I thought it would attract people’s attention when
they are reading the magazine. In my first task I didn’t use the
pull out quotes.
The mast head I did the same as “We <3 Pop” magazine and I
had it in the corner so the main focus was on the artist on the
front cover. I wanted all the focus to be on her and then the
audience could read the quotes to see what else was in the
magazine. I learnt that if you have the mast head in the corner
the focus is more on the person on the cover.
On my front cover I thought my layout was much more better
then the first task I had. It looks more organised and easier to
navigate around then the first task. Also I used my research
better and made everything look more improved then the first
task.
5. Post Production Skills
I have learnt from this task how to use Photoshop and InDesign
properly and all the tools needed to edit my pictures. I have
learnt how to edit in a brick wall into one of my pictures using the
clone tool in Photoshop. The spot healing brush also in
Photoshop has been used with some of the photos I took. I used
the editing options in Photoshop a lot, I used a lot the exposure,
brightness/contrast and hue/ saturation in my pictures.
In InDesign I have learnt how to layout a double page spread
and how everything should look like. Also I have learnt how to
draw a picture text box and then add a picture into it, this helped
with the positioning of some of my pictures I used in the pages
of my magazine.
6. Have I Improved?
I think I have improved in my research, planning and also my
making. I think my magazine looks more better then the
Preliminary task. I think I used all the skills that I have learnt and
used them and make my magazine look a lot more better. I think
all of the faults with the last magazine I took on board and then
made sure I didn’t make the same faults as last time in my
magazine.
This time I decided quickly how I wanted my magazine to look
and what I wanted inside of the magazine to have and to look
like. I also came up with the colour scheme and the layout of the
magazine easily as well, I wanted to stick to two different colours
and keep the running throughout the magazine.
