1. Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task,
what do you feel you have learnt in the
progression from it to full Product?
2. I believe that I have progressed a drastic amount since we did the preliminary
task. The main thing that I have improved is my ability to use the software on
the computer, in particular Photoshop. When we did the preliminary task I
had never used Photoshop before and had to work out how to use it. This was
the main reason for it being so simple. When I reflect on the mise en scene I
can see that the image isn’t great and looks cheesy; also it isn’t straight on
the page he is more over to one side. The text is only in one colour and one
font. The cove is missing key features such as the issue date, number and
price. With the preliminary contents page there isn’t much content,
everything is too big and the colours don’t really work together.
3. The first thing I developed and progressed with was
my understanding of Photoshop. I used Photoshop for
entirety of my magazine. This meant that as my skills
were non-existent to begin with I had to develop
them quickly and put them to use almost straight
away when making my magazine. I gradually learned
how to use many of the different buttons and tools
within the programme. As I developed my skills my
work became better and improved. Simple things
such as learning how to put the grid on helped me to
align everything perfectly instead of by eye; this made
my magazine look loads better.
4. Another thing I learned from my preliminary task is that
I would need a good picture, one where the model was
exactly how I wanted him and in the right position to
make the photo look right, again making the mise en
scene more professional. I had to also pick a photo that
fit the genre of the magazine I was creating. As well as
this I had to make sure that the picture had enough
room at the top for my mast head instead of it covering
his head. I also considered the mise en scene when
thinking about a background, whether it would be white,
black coloured, outside, against a wall etc.
Another thing I have learned is that my understanding of
how magazines are laid out, and their key features etc.
Before creating our final piece we had to do the
research and planning, which ultimately told me that my
preliminary magazine needed A LOT of work. There were
things missed, too big, too small etc. For my final piece
everything would have to be perfect. I had to add in
many things to my final magazine to make sure that it
was right.
5. My preliminary task helped me an enormous
amount. The main things it helped me with
were getting an understanding of how
Photoshop worked and how magazines are
laid out and also how much work goes into
them. It taught me that I needed to pull my
finger out and learn how to use the software,
make changes and adapt my magazine to get
the best mark!
