To appeal to this audience, the author used vivid photography of similar-aged models, trends like polaroids and affordable branded clothing. The price and monthly frequency were designed to be affordable. Interviews were prioritized over reviews per the audience. The artist on the cover and focus on house music addressed reader preferences. Color scheme and free gift incentives also appealed to the target audience. 2. Through market and audience research I discovered who the
main target audience for my magazine would be. To do this, I
used tools such as SurveyMonkey and conducted interviews to
find out who they were and what they were looking for in a music
magazine.
3. One way that I appealed to my target
audience was through my photography. I
used mainly mid-shots and used large
images throughout as this is something
that my target audience had answered in
my survey to say they preferred. I also
used a mixture of serious and fun pictures
so that the magazine looked professional
yet appealed to those who are also
looking for fun. I made the pictures a vivid
and clear as possible and had the models
directly looking towards the camera in
most so that the reader feels engaged with
the content. I also used the idea of having
polaroid looking images on my contents
page as polaroids tend to be quite new
and trendy within my target audience so
that shows the magazine is keeping up
with trends. I also edited my photographs
to blend in with the colour theme and
changed details such as the model’s eye
colour to also fit in with the colours better.
4. Costume is another way in which I
attracted and addressed my audience. I
had my models wearing clothing that
were on trend and accessible for readers
to buy. My models were wearing
affordable clothing which is important as
my audience are mainly around 18 and
therefore will not have much disposable
income. Brands such as Adidas were worn
as my audience can relate to this and the
vast majority will have heard of or own
some Adidas clothing, again making it
feel relatable. My models were also a
similar age to the target audience and
looked as though they too would be
interested in dance music so that the
reader could feel connected with them.
5. The price of my magazine and the
frequency of it also addressed and
appealed to my audience. Because
the majority are around 18 years old,
they will not have much disposable
income and therefore I priced my
product as £2.50 so that it was
affordable to the reader. I also chose
to have my magazine as a monthly
magazine as the majority of my
audience only bought my magazine
‘every so often’ so I thought it would
be illogical for me to have a weekly
edition of it.
6. When deciding on content, the
majority of my target audience
suggested they would prefer
reading interviews rather than
reviews and so I included plenty of
these in the contents page and
also made my double page spread
an artist interview. When
investigating further into what they
wanted to know about artists in my
own interviews I found that my
audience wanted to hear about
festivals and gig stories etc.
Therefore, I included this in my
double page spread and also used
these ideas for my coverlines on
the front cover to initially attract
my audience to want to buy the
magazine.
7. The artist I selected for my front
cover also attracted my audience as
on my survey many voted for ‘Avicii’
as their favourite artist. They also
voted house music as their favourite
type of dance music artists and
therefore in my contents and
throughout the magazine I used
more house music artists than any
other as this is what my reader really
wants. I also addressed the reader
by having artist’s names on the front
cover to appeal to them as most
people would not know many house
music artists, yet by having the
names of some on the front the
reader may have felt it was
addressing them in particular.
8. The colour scheme I chose would
appeal to my target audience as
they are a mixture of males and
females and therefore I used quite
gender neutral colours so that I
didn’t appeal to any gender more
than another. I also used a survey to
find out what colours most
appealed to my reader and after
analysing it further and conducting
artist interviews I found blue was a
common trend and a desired colour
amongst my audience. Therefore, I
kept the magazine black and white
but used blue as a splash of colour
to engage the reader and make it
truly appeal to them.
9. When conducting my audience
interviews I also found that my target
audience wanted incentives to buy the
magazine such as free gifts or discount
codes etc. Therefore on my front cover I
advertised a free David Guetta CD so
that they felt like they was getting
something out of buying the magazine
other than just the content. I also used a
different way of formatting my text when
advertising this to make the main
wording stand out such as ‘free’ and
‘David Guetta’ as these are the elements
that would really interest the reader. This
formatting also looks very modern and
unconventional which may also appeal to
and address the reader. Also, by using
the word ‘plus’ it makes the reader feel
as though they are getting something
exclusive and extra which is another
incentive to buy the product.
10. Finally, as a way of addressing my audience in my interviews I wrote
about festivals as this is what readers wanted to know about as I
discovered from my audience interviews. I often mentioned specific
festivals such as Creamfields as this is a famous dance music festival
and I also mentioned places such as Ocean Beach, Ibiza as this is a
common place for major DJ’s and dance music lovers to go. In my
contents and on my coverline I also referred to ministry of sound
which is well known for dance music albums and technology brands
such as Sonos and Pioneer as these are good for DJ’ing equipment. I
also mentioned specific clubs such as Mission and Revolutions as a
way of addressing my reader as the majority will have heard of or
been to these places and so it appeals to them personally.
