After researching many different magazine
distribution companies I first thought of the
idea of having a company called Bauer
distribute my music magazine. At first I
thought this would be a really good idea as I
found out from their website that they offer
over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well
as online, TV and radio stations. This would
be really useful as it shows that they have a
wide audience and so would more likely sell
magazine’s. However after researching into
the other magazines which Bauer distribute I
discovered that they also work with
‘Kerrang!’ magazine which is my main
competition as my magazine is quite similar
to ‘Kerrang!’. Having Bauer distribute my
magazine would not be wise because of this
as the company would not be interested in
distributing two very similar magazine’s.
I then had the idea to have a company called IPC media
distribute my music magazine, this is another
successful distributor as it is the UK's leading
consumer magazine publisher. However I found two
problems with choosing this distributing company, one
of them being the fact that they focus on publishing to
an older audience than my magazine is aimed at, the
other reason is similar to the problem I had with ‘Bauer’
with the fact that they also distribute a magazine
similar to mine called ‘NME’.
I then thought of the idea of researching into distribution
companies that don’t already work with a magazine similar to mine
and also that could distribute to my target audience of late teens to
young adults. With this in mind I found a company called
‘Immediate Media Co’ which would be ideal to distribute my music
magazine as they are the biggest consumer media business in the
UK and the third largest magazine publisher, they also sell over 70
million magazines every year. This company is perfect as when
researching the brands which they already distribute I found that
they don’t distribute a music magazine like mine however they do
distribute other genre’s of music magazine’s. This is important as
it shows that they have knowledge of distributing music
magazine’s however there is an open market for my magazine so
the company will want to distribute my magazine.
