What kind of media
institution might
distribute your product
and why?
Publishing Houses
 I think a number of different institutions would be able to distribute
my product successfully, this is due to the wide scope of my magazine
having both pop and indie elements.
 I have looked into the following publishing houses:
 Bauer Media Group
 Time Inc UK
 Prometheus Global
Time Inc
 One publishing house which I think would distribute my magazine would be
Time Inc. who currently publish NME.
 They are a major publishing house based in the UK but also operate globally.
According to their website, they engage with ‘almost half of all UK adults in
print’ and their websites have ‘over 28 million global users’.
 They have a variety of different magazines and brands. As they are UK based,
this would mean that my magazine would be circulated in Britain, as it is
primarily based at the British with UK acts featured such as ‘Adele’, ‘Ed
Sheeran’ etc., it also includes the UK charts.
Time Inc
 Although, they currently publish NME, they have large numbers of brands
within the same market already, so it wouldn’t be a problem.
 My magazine also has a unique selling point of combining multiple genres as
well as challenging conventions of popular magazines. Time manage their own
distribution channels and have a range of different methods from online,
print, supermarkets, subscription services etc. This would allow my magazine
to reach the maximum number of readers possible.
Bauer Media Group
 Another company I believe could distribute my product is Bauer Media, who
currently publish Q Magazine.
 They are a forward-reaching and tech-savvy company who keep up to date
with the best ways to distribute their products.
 They have a wide audience reach (over 22 million UK adults), again, based
predominantly in the UK which would be ideal for my magazine.
BMG - Technologies
 Bauer Media not only distribute online and in print but offer digital
services via services such as Apple Newsstand allowing readers to
subscribe to the magazine on their phone or tablet and receive the
latest issue to their device.
 I think this would be ideal for my magazine as my target audience
is teenagers who are ‘in touch’ with today’s technologies and so
this could reach more readers than with other companies. Also,
Bauer have experience of advertising and marketing a pop
magazine with ‘Q’ but have a gap in the market as ‘Q’ is aimed at a
slightly older audience than my magazine.
Prometheus Global Media
 I also researched into Billboard’s publishing house, Prometheus Global Media,
which is based in New York.
 As I based my magazine on ideas from Billboard, I initially thought that this
would be a good idea, however, the company is global and so this could be
difficult to become successful with the demographics and target audience
that I have chosen.
 Also, as my magazine is a new product, it would not be sensible to produce it
globally, especially when the content is focused solely on the UK.
Summary
 Overall, I think Bauer Media Group would be the most suitable choice to
distribute my magazine as they are able to not only distribute in print which
will be able to sent to big shops like ASDA, Morrisons, Tesco etc. but publish
online, to social media and to portable devices.
 This would maximise the reach of my magazine to my target audience. Also,
as Bauer Media currently operate in the UK, it means that my magazine could
easily be distributed nationwide.
