The document discusses how the magazine attracts its target audience of young, working class house music fans through its design elements. On the front cover, it uses the unisex colors red and black and features an attractive female model to appeal to both genders. Informal text about dancing is used to relate to the lifestyle of its audience. On the contents page, it keeps the same color scheme and includes social media links to engage its technology-focused audience. Photographs show everyday people in street settings to seem relatable. Throughout the magazine, an informal tone and interviews with famous artists are used to attract and hold the interest of its audience.
1. Question 5- How did you attract/address
your audience?
Front Cover
One characteristic of my target audience is that I am making
my magazine appeal to both genders. I have done this on my
front cover by using the colours red and black. These are both
very unisex colours so will attract males and females. In
contrast if I just used pink then it may have only appealed to
women.
I have also chosen my main image carefully, as I know this will
attract both men and women. I have done this because having
a girl featured as the model may be more relatable for women
so they will want to buy the magazine. Also males may find
her attractive and want to purchase it.
The laid back text on the front cover ‘dance, jump, rave’ is
used to attract my target audience. This is because they are a
young group of people so will not be attracted by extremely
formal text. Therefore I have been fairly informal but not
what they would class as ‘immature’. Also their lifestyle may
involve a lot of dancing or raving meaning this would be
appealing to them.
The text I have used such as ‘Your monthly dose of house
music’ is used specifically to attract house music fans. As soon
as they see this they will know what this magazine is about
and be drawn into it immediately.
Although only a small detail, I believe the price on the front
cover will attract my working class target audience. As my
target audience are most likely to be young and working class,
the cheap price of £2.00 on the front cover may be appealing
to them because it is not too expensive; it is an affordable
price.
2. Contents Page
I have also kept the colour scheme consistent on my
contents page to attract my target audience. This is
sticking to the red and black colours which will appeal
to both males and females as they are unisex colours,
not associated with a stereotypical view of a certain
gender.
Another thing I have included on my contents page is
social media links. This is a huge part of my magazine
which will immediately catch the attention of my target
audience. This is because as they are young social
media plays a very important role in all their lives.
Using social media links on my contents page will
ensure that my target audience are attracted as
everything nowadays revolves around the internet and
their phones. Especially the age group I am trying to
target with my house music magazine.
Another thing I have done on my contents page is used
informal language. I have done this to attract my target
audience because they are young and would lose
interest if formal language was used. I have made my
sentences interesting to read by using short and
snappy simple sentences such as ‘everything you need
to know to survive the craziest festivals!’. This will
attract my target audience because this is the way in
which they speak. Informal language is key to keeping
their interest.
I have also used a range of different photos. I have
done this to show all different aspects of house music.
This will attract my specific target audience because it
features very ‘normal’ people making it relatable for
them. I also chose the background of my photographs
carefully. Showing my models sitting on walls, or stairs.
This relates to my working class target audience as they
are typically associated with hanging out around the
streets with friends. I have also done this because
house music is closely associated with dance, so street
dance could be in the lifestyle of a wide range of my
target audience.
3. Double Page Spread
The first thing I have done to attract my target audience, as done on all my pages is used the
colours black and red consistently. As said before, this is because they are unisex colours so will
attract both males and females.
I have also chosen to do an interview on my double page spread. This is because my target
audience of house music fans will want to know what their favourite star is up to. This will attract
them as they will want to read more and find out about the latest news.
In my interview I have also used very informal language. This is so that my target audience can
relate to the language and do not lose interest. Formal language is typically associated with older,
middle class people. However, with my target audience being young and working class it is best to
use informal text as this will be easier for them to read and they may find they are able to relate to
it.
The main image also attracts my target audience. Firstly, because they will be house music fans
they will recognise this ‘artist’ and immediately want to read more about her because she is big in
house music right now. Also, it attracts my target audience similar to my front cover. This is
because featuring a picture of a girl is appealing for both sexes. Girls will be able to relate to her
and feel like this may be a ‘feminine’ article where they can get tips on beauty, or just to read about
music. Also, males will see the picture of an attractive artist and may want to find out more about
the rising star.
The grab quote I have included also attracts my audience. This is because house music fans will
immediately notice that ‘Calvin’ is ‘Calvin Harris’. By using a extremely famous artist’s name in a
grab quote will entice people into reading the article as it gives them a short taste of what it may be
about.
