Evaluation – Question 3
What have you learned from your
audience feedback?
When making my music video I knew it was important to do extensive research on my target audience so that I
could create something that would appeal to them. One of the ways I did this was just general research into the
genre and the types of people that watched them this lead me to ask questions to close friends and class mates
to see what kind of things they wanted to see found appealing to them making notes along the way. I then
moved on to asking some of the more experienced media students for there opinions and techniques to help me
also.
With this information I began to plan to create my video with all the starter research in mind. Once I had a rough
idea I went back and had my video reviewed. After plenty of points both good and bad were given to me I found
myself going back to do more research so I could better my video.
I decided to create a survey using the site ‘survey monkey’ where I decided on a range of questions thatcould be
anonymously answered a put the link on to my blog so anyone could answer as well as emailing to a range of
people to get a good amount of feedback to go off.

and responses supplied

After looking at all the responses I got from my survey I took time to collect all the best ideas and find a way to
put these into my music video. I found that creating audience profiles and mood boards using things such as
pinterest to help get me inspired as visual aid helps me become more creative.
I decided that after all the extra research and feedback on my video it was important to go back and re edit and
makes some changes to my video by making it look more linked to the genre and what the audience liked from
the audience response.
The use of transitions, overlays and colour where added more to give it more of a dance like feel I then went
back to get this further addition reviewed by the audience.
The use of this instantly created a better and more positive response from the audience as it was more linked
to the genre and times, making it more appealing to the eye and creating a constant link throughout the music
video.
Theses images show the improvements after audience feedback which improved the overall look of the video
although some of shots where affected by simply playing around with the affects I found a way to get the most
out of the shots.
Most of my audience feedback for my music video was gathered through multiple media platforms such as survey monkey and
YouTube but mostly though the use of word and mouth and peoples face to face opinions or group discussions. By having more
than one way of getting feed back it allowed me to get a varied amount of responses and ideas to help me make changes and
improve my work I felt that the face to face truthful comments helped greatly as even the criticism helped to improve and make
change as it was more honest and from people that may have more experience in the subject.
I found that it is important to be open to new ideas and criticism as over all it helps to create a better end product. The audience
showed what was best and worst when it came to the video and made it clear what they wanted to see that would appeal to
them and make them want to watch it. I found that it was also helpful for me to be interested in the genre and music so that I
had a good idea of what was expected from the beginning.
The audience feedback told us that the camera work was over all good and the use of close ups and extreme close ups and the
range of angles made the video more appealing to look at and fit well with the genre by following those of similar conventions
from previous existing music videos from the same genre, taking inspiration from iconic males and the star image.
Also mise en scene feedback had a positive response, the uses of simple black and white and lighting fit well with the genre. The
lighting was mentioned as it was well presented and used to set up shots. The use of costume was modern, simple and stylish, I
wanted the white top to be iconic and create a link to the existing product artist Calvin Harris but still not being to obvious but still
being attractive to look at which I believe from audience feed back was a successful technique.
