What have you
learned from your
audience feedback?
Q3
We obtained our audience feedback through the use of anonymous voting cards, we did this as a
class. My media group spent one period watching everybody's music video productions, and for
each one we had a feedback sheet stating how many stars/5 would be given and areas of
strength and improvement. This method was chosen as it collected impartial views of the music
videos meaning that personal relationships and the people viewing the music videos would not
effect the results in any way.
By doing this we managed to gain constructive criticisms which allowed us to evaluate our media
product to a higher level.
What we did well within our
production
The feedback we received was based on the post production elements. The top 5 areas which people highlighted to us
as our strengths were:
-Editing: in terms of the editing I believe that this was one of our stronger points, we included a variety of different
effects which made our music video run smoothly and gave a professional look to our music video,
-Lip syncing- in terms of the lip syncing our artist was very confident throughout which enabled the lip syncing to look
and feel genuine to our audience. We also achieved this due to the fact that our artist sang along to the song whilst we
took the shots, this ensured that she was always in time with the music throughout which made for much easier
editing.
-Glitch- We added the glitch to enhance the switch between the two emotions of our artist, I believe this emphasised
the narrative which we were trying to get across to the audience and also looked professional when switching
between the shots.
-Transitions between moods/shots- When filming our music video we used mise-en-scene in a variety if ways, more
specifically we changed the artists outfits, makeup and the colour of the shots completely to cater to the mood which
we were aiming for in the shots.
-Polaroids- I believe the polaroid's were popular when highlighting ours strengths as they are unique, and we were the
only group which included them in our music video. This gave a sense of individualism which helped present the artist.
These most popular responses are an example of ones which focused more on the post-production side of the music
video production.
The overall view of our music video was positive, non of the feedback sheets score below a 3/5 stars,
this shows that people genuinely enjoyed our music video.
In terms of the genre we aimed for which was pop/indie I believe we achieved this and it is shown
through the feedback. For example some of the comments were ‘good use of polaroid's very unique’
this is what we wanted to achieve as we felt this represented the indie genre into our music video,
another comment was ‘good use of shots with the artist’ we focussed heavily on close up and mid
shots of the artist, these are heavily used in pop music videos which is where we got the idea from as
we wanted it to be a clear representation of the genres.
Social media audience feedback
The preview screening of the music videos wasn’t the only form of audience feedback we
obtained. Our group has a variety of different social media platforms including Instagram,
Twitter and our website. These formats allow us to survey and speak to our audience so we can
understand what they want.
In my opinion twitter is the best way to gain audience feedback as it enables us to create polls so
the audience can vote.
Blumer and Katz theory
Blumer and Katz theory is the understanding of what the audience does for the media and what
the media does for the audience. It is the integration that what the audience does for the media
boosts sales.
The uses of gratification theory follows a model, the audience takes an active role on their media
choice. By seeking out their media a person fulfils the need to be informed, which is why it is so
important to keep the audience informed on latest productions via social media to engage their
conversations.
It was also important for us to identify our audience in order to gain this crucial feedback.
What we could improve on
-Emphasising the narrative
-Use a wider variety of shots
These were the two main points for improvement which our focus group picked up on. In many
ways I agree with them, this is because we aimed to combine pop with indie which meant lots
of close up and mid shots of the artist, however this then made the music video lack in climax
which is where a stronger narrative would have improved this section. The music video started
off really well, and we combined the two genres in a professional way, however if we included
more shots which represented the indie genre I think this would have stopped the music video
being so repetitive and improved the narrative.
