Hailey Marks-Burton created a documentary on cyberbullying and received feedback from various sources to evaluate and improve her work. Students in a Year 10 drama class enjoyed the documentary and understood the topic. Some feedback suggested improving sound quality during outdoor recordings and adding more interviews. Overall, the audience engaged with the documentary and felt it effectively addressed the issue of cyberbullying.

1. AUDIENCE FEEDBACK - EVALUATION BY HAILEY MARKS-BURTON

2. FEEDBACK In order to get feedback from my audience, I asked a number of people in various ways. The first way I got feedback was by going into a Year 10 Drama Class and giving each student a questionnaire for them to fill in. I also put my products onto social networking sites such as Facebook. I then asked my target audience – teenagers – to comment on what they thought. I also got small groups of classes to watch the documentary and give me informal feedback. I am now going to analyse my feedback that I received.

3. INFORMAL FEEDBACK These are a few of the comments I received from people after watching my documentary: Liked the fact that I had included celebrities – it shows that not everyone who is bullied gets knocked down. Someone thought it was good that I had included it as part of ‘Channel 4’s Bullying Week’ as Cyberbullying is just one type. The documentary wasn’t boring, the music choices kept the audience watching and it helped to appreciate the emotions of what took place on the screen. Maybe by improving the sound when outside and recording would’ve make it look more professional. Interview with a teacher and other authorities.

4. INFORMAL FEEDBACK Next time, use a tripod to ensure that the camera shots are still. Some of the cutaways were easy to relate to as they were realistic. It shows that now anyone and everyone can be bullied. These small comments will help me to evaluate the way that I produced, edited and planned the documentary.

5. QUESTIONNAIRE I asked a Year 10 GCSE Drama group to watch my documentary and produce some results for my questionnaire. First, I let the students watch the documentary and then I gave them time to answer 9 questions. These were: Did you enjoy watching the documentary? Did you understand the documentary? Did you learn anything from the documentary? Did the documentary stick to the subject? When watching the documentary did you feel that it was boring at any point? Was there anything that you didn’t like when watching the documentary? Can you suggest any improvements that could be made if necessary? Did everything on screen work well together? (cutaways, music and interviews) Has the documentary affected you in any way?

6. 1. DID YOU ENJOY WATCHING THE DOCUMENTARY? Every student that responded said that they thought my documentary got its point across and they enjoyed watching it. Some of the students said that they would love to see the full series if it was going to be of that quality. Comments:

7. 2. DID YOU UNDERSTAND THE DOCUMENTARY? Once again, every student that participated said that they were able to understand the subject. Most of the students said that the subject was clear and that they knew what was going on. Comments:

8. 3. DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING FROM THE DOCUMENTARY? I was glad with the result from this question as I wanted people to be able to learn from my documentary, however, I think the fact that some participants knew what the subject was and that they understood it means they are aware of the threats. Someone in the questionnaire said that they were unaware that cyberbullying was taking part in their high school. Comments:

9. 4. DID THE DOCUMENTARY STICK TO THE SUBJECT? I am also delighted that the respondents thought my product stuck to the subject. I used a collaboration of cutaways, audio and interviews to make the subject relevant in the most possible way with the effect to show that it is a realistic subject. One respondent said that the topic flowed the whole way through. Comments:

10. 5. WHEN WATCHING THE DOCUMENTARY DID YOU FEEL THAT IT WAS BORING AT ANY POINT? Once again, I am pleased to know that none of the respondents found my documentary boring. Most of the participants said that they enjoyed it thoroughly and that the use of music and images kept them interesting, as well as the emotional interviews. Comments:

11. 6. WAS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU DIDN’T LIKE WHEN WATCHING THE DOCUMENTARY? I asked this question to see what the audience thought of the way I produced the documentary. I wanted to get comments based on the way it was presented and to see if the audience thought if there were any flaws. The majority said they didn’t have anything they didn’t like. However, one person said that the camera went blurry during some parts and another person didn’t like that fact that people were cyber bullied. Comments:

12. 7. CAN YOU SUGGEST ANY IMPROVEMENTS THAT COULD BE MADE IF NECESSARY? I didn’t think that this question and its results could be graphed, so instead, I am going to list the comments that were put: Look more at social networking sites and what they have to say about the subject Include more interviews within the documentary to get the emotional side A bit more information about the subject than interviews Balance the audio when there is narrative Use a tripod when filming Avoid filming whilst there is a lot of wind/background noise as it is difficult to understand

13. 8. DID EVERYTHING ON SCREEN WORK WELL TOGETHER? I am glad that everyone thought the use of cutaways and my music choice worked well together. I put a lot of effort into choosing the right music to suit the subject as well as a list of cutaways. One participant said the use of these elements made the documentary look very professional. Comments:

14. 9. HAS THE DOCUMENTARY AFFECTED YOU IN ANY WAY? I wanted to know what my audience thought about the documentary, but I also wanted to find out if it had affected them in anyway whatsoever. I am happy that the majority of my audience felt affected in one way or another. Most people said that the were now going to be more aware of what they post. However, some said they didn’t learn anything as they were already aware of the risks that come with social networking sites. Comments:

15. FACEBOOK FEEDBACK – DOUBLE-PAGE SPREAD This comment is helpful as it is the first bit of criticism I received. Charlotte thought that the use of block images didn’t suit the style of the page, and by blurring the edges, I could’ve made it more effective. Eliss agreed with Charlotte that blurring the images wouldn’t have made them distract attention from the article. Also, there is an edgy part which should’ve been blurred as well. Julie is also part of the audience and represents the parents. She believes that the image I used of myself in the top corner was too large, and by making the centred images larger, it would bring more effect to the subject.

16. FACEBOOK FEEDBACK - ADVERTISEMENT Although I didn’t receive a lot of feedback for my advert (on Facebook) the comments I did get were positive. Hollie thought that the fonts looked effective and gave off the ‘old-school’ computer effect. She also thought that using a quote introduced the subject to its audience.

17. CONCLUSION I think that from my feedback I have gained a positive response. By asking a range of people I have been able to get honest and liable comments about my production. By asking a group of Year 10’s I was able to gain information about my documentary, finding out what they liked, didn’t like, and thought that I could improve. If I were to do this task again, I would look more into detail about how I introduced myself in my documentary, and put more thought into my environment and how to use my resources. I would also re-do my sound levels to make sure that the background music doesn’t become too loud whilst I am narrating. I would possibly remove the number of interviews and add in a real life story go make it more emotional.

18. CONCLUSION For my print documents, I would re-do my double-page spread and alter the way my images are put across. I think that the text I used suited the purpose and the justified alignment made it look professional. However, many people commented saying that the image of myself in the top corner was too big. I did this so that I could keep brand image, as the image is similar to the one I used on my advert. However, next time I would make the centred images – screen captures from the documentary – much bigger. This would then draw more attention to the subject rather than the irrelevant image of myself. I think that if I was to redo my advertisement, I would look at the lighting when taking the photo and editing on Photoshop. I would look at making the image slightly darker. However, I think from the feedback I got, the way the text, logo and image are positioned worked really well. I would also have made the Channel 4 logo less box-like, and just used the lines of the logo. This would draw more attention to the title of the documentary, rather than the channel.
