Question 2
2. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
Sabrina cooper (villain/protagonist)
We have used this character in our film as she is going to be different from other
villains/murderers in films. Most films don’t have whole stories or a whole film
dedicated to the villain. It will give the audience more empathy with the villain
and give them a chance to see why she is like how she is. Her hair is quite
typical for someone in a thriller film but it is unique for a protagonist in a thriller
movie as you don’t usually see them with hair like Sabrina’s. Her hair is long
and dark giving her more of a mysterious look. In our opening Sabrina has a
different outfit that is more normal, this is because we followed Todorov’s theory
in which it stars with the equilibrium where the girl is more at a normal stage of
her life in which our audience could relate to.
Ben Rippon (hero)
We have used this character as the main man in our film. He is going to play
more of a hero role in our opening but he also slightly a victim. His costume is
very modern and many people would wear an outfit like that now, we chose this
costume as we wanted it to just be very normal and we wanted the audience to
see that he is just a normal guy. From his costume the audience may be able to
tell that he is quite popular. He is the kind of guy that every girl wants without
being too typical, we didn’t want him to be like one of they typical American
heartthrobs, we wanted him to be more of a typical guy so that he is more
relatable.
Hannah church (victim/antagonist)
This character more represents the popular social
group, she is very fashionable which suggests that
she keeps up to date on the fashion and that may
be something she cares about, it is quite typical that
popular people like fashion so we thought that we
would go with that. We have used this character in
the film to contrast with our main character as they
are both very different. In most thrillers there is a
character who doesn’t mean to be on the villains
bad side but is, for our film this is that character.
The audience should feel slight sympathy for this
character as it is not her fault that she loves the
main man too.
Throughout our opening, our target audience should be able
to relate with the characters in some way, the characters are
the same age as the target audience which makes it easier
for them to relate. The two girl characters are completely
contrasting so the female audience can pick a side in which
they prefer and relate to. Our male character would be your
typical boy so some people may be able to relate to him, the
story here is different to others where it is the girl with the
choice of two guys like in twilight, we thought we would
change it so people can see other views and relate to our
characters. Their costumes are modern so it’s likely to see
that some of the audience may wear clothes like our
characters.
