How does your media
product represent
particular social groups
For my R&B magazine, I am aiming to attract young adults aged 16-25, both male and
female as the main consumer/readers. The majority of my targeted age are students in
education who have a little amount of income to spend, due to this not many students
will be likely to subscribe monthly. My magazine price was originally set at £4.50 which
may be too high for students to purchase, therefore I decided to keep my costs low and
reduce my magazine price
to £ 1.50.
As you can see from the table above, I have targeted group E as it relates most closely to
students in education, therefore my pricing range has to be as low as possible to allow
students in my chosen age group to be able to afford the magazine.
Before I started my product I did some research on what type
of celebrity's are popular in today’s world, that would feature in my
magazine and what representations are of men and women in this
particular genre. I did this by looking at the singers music videos, which
can be seen in my research at the beginning of my blog.
In conclusion to my research it represented the singers, showing wealth
through gold, bling and cars. When we think of bling and lots of money in
this particular genre we see men as 'gangsters'. Representation of
women are seen as perfect figures, a lot of makeup to appeal to the male
audience. Yet female celebrity‘s are seen as bad girls, a female version of
male artists, so for my magazine I tried to recreate this look with my
leading female artist. So in this case my model looked edgy and raw.
Why I chose to use my outfit?
Personally, I feel that this outfit was
the right choice, as in my research I
found that the R&B artist wear a lot
of denim with a long necklace or a
gold chain which connotes power
and money.
The models choice of hair style is
also very important, as it needs to
be appropriate to the theme. I
decided to use this style because I
found it very conventional with
the R&B artists.
Mise en scene
Personally I feel that costume, make-up and props are extremely
important, as it is essential to ensure that the Mise en scene
represents the genre correctly. The model on my front cover has
make up which is bold, with red lipstick, and dark eyes, this
makes a dramatic impact. I also ensured that the location used
was urban to suit my genre, (R&B.) The location of my front
cover, and contents page is set in a old country farm yard, with
the back ground being an old barn. This enables my contents
page to appear rustic and simple, which again represents R&B. I
researched all different R&B magazines and styles, this helped
me to identify the similarities between them, e.g. the different
types of shot angles used, the make up and costume design.
The R&B genre rarely represents a luxurious and upper class
lifestyle, which is why I chose to display this setting on my
product.
Why I chose to use this outfit?
I have used this photo as the
jumpsuit represents
confidence in the artist, as it
is revealing, which captures
worldwide attention and will
have a lasting impact on the
consumer.
The animal print heels have a
big impact on the image as it
adds a fun and wild side to
the model which represent
most R&B artist
The microphone has
been used in this phone
as singing is a big part of
the artists life and shows
how relaxed she is when
performing.
My models hair style is
sophisticated she is seen
playing with different styles
throughout my magazine
that complete her look.
Glam, elegant, feminine are
all part of R&B fashion style.
It is the way she manages to
wear and combine her
outfits that make my model
stand out and be unique
Why I chose not to use this outfit?
I decided not to use this image as it shows the models busy off screen lifestyle, and I
found that if I used this image my magazine could appear to be a fashion/clothing
magazine. The use of props, for example the Louis Vuitton bag would add to the
fashion magazine such as vogue, which is not what my magazine is about.
Features
The features for my magazine leave the audience wanting to know more, for example
‘Millie Clifford's 15 year triumph and tragedy,’ this portrays to the audience that Millie
has been through a tough time in the music industry.
The word ‘Exclusive’ is very
important as it leads the reader to
believe that this is new
information/never been seen
before, so will be of interest to the
audience.
I decided to stick with my
colour scheme throughout
my magazine as this makes
it look more professional.
The ‘Grammy Awards’ will
have an impact on the
reader as they will be able
to vote on the outcome of
the awards, been involved in
this way makes purchasing
the magazine more
interesting and rewarding
