Question 2: How does your media
product represent particular social
groups
Within my project, my media production represents the following : (relating to social
groups)
C - Class
R - Race
A - Age
G - Gender
S - Sexuality
Class
The audience that I have targeted in my
media production would be middle class,
I have represented class within my
production through my protagonist,
throughout the narrative he can be seen to
be middle class.
However, the way that he is dressed and
the actions that he followed challenges
the stereotypes that the middle class are
well
presented and respected, as well as being clean
and tidy. The audience can see that my
protagonist is middle class, this is from his
surroundings and bedroom.
I have used mise-en-scene purposefully to show
the audience he is middle class. This is from the
use of props and location.
The audience can also see the protagonists
social class when he
is in the wilderness,
despite living alone, the character is still well dressed and
clean.
Age
The age of people who would view my production, as well
as being my intended target audience are aged 15 - 24.
The protagonist in my film is a similar age, the character
is a 21 year old who has just finished university and is
driven to leave home and society. I think that is why I
have chosenthis particular age group to target my film.
Due to my viewers being of similar age and situations, I
feel like my audience would be able to relate to my
protagonist. As part of my props, I have positioned a
MacBook and a pair of headphones clearly in sight of the
audience, this again relates to the audience as this shows
them that the character is following modern technology
and trends.
Also this supports the stereotype that young people are stronger than old people as
my protagonist was strong enough to leave home and leave society.
This could potentially support the stereotype that old people are more intelligent and
mature than young people, this is due to my protagonist leaving society to go into the
wild without any training or preparation.
Gender
My productionis all male, this is because the only character in my production is a
male. In common films, male protagonist are represented as the lonesome character
that is strong and independent, for example in my productionthe male character
represents how most men are portrayed in films. As my productioncontains no
female characters, this doesn’t give them the chance to possibly challenge typical
stereotypes that are portrayed in films.
Sexuality
The sexuality I have portrayed in my productionis heterosexual, as this is traditional
in a film. This can be seen through the masculine role of my protagonist character as
he is living on his own.
This confirms the stereotype that men are seen as masculine.
