The document discusses how a music magazine represents various social groups in terms of gender, age, class, ethnicity, and social groups. Regarding gender, the magazine features both male and female models portrayed equally. The target age group is 17-26 years old. A variety of social classes and ethnicities are featured to be multicultural, focusing on the music talents rather than attributes. The key social group represented is indie through the lifestyle, fashion, photography and music featured.
This is a presentation for the evaluation section of my magazine product. This looks into who my magazine represents and how I did this. I then looked at competitor magazines to do the same.

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
1. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
2. Gender I have represent both males and females in my magazine. The magazine features a female front cover and a double page spread. However, I have included two different male models on the contents page. The female I have featured on the front cover is a well known singer and song writer, who the audience will automatically recognise as she has appeared in many magazines and at music festivals across the country. It is not necessarily the gender of the model on the front cover that attracts the key demographic to the magazine, but the celebrity culture which play a large role in this. I have presented my female model in a way which could be interpreted as quite sexual. However, when I took the photographs I did not have this in mind. I wanted to present the model in a powerful and rebellious way. This challenges the old fashioned stereotype that females are the innocent, girly and weaker sex. The photographs could be considered to be suggestive as the front cover shows the model laying down on a rumpled bed with longing eyes that connect with the audience. The photograph which is featured on the double page spread is slightly more revealing as you can see the models bra. However, I wanted to create an image that suggested this female was wild and rebellious. The bottles of alcohol that are positioned around the bath and the headphones the model is wearing carry the rock and roll connotations. This also challenges the stereotype that it is only males that lead the hard rock and roll lifestyle. I have ensured that both males and females have been portrayed as equals throughout the magazine. They have all been represented as talented, young individuals that my target audience would aspire to be like. I don’t believe that gender plays a large role in the magazine. Although, the roles that males and females play in the music industry are a major contributing factor to the magazine.
3. My magazine is aimed at an audience that is between 17 and 26 years old. This age group represents my key demographic and the genres of music and the artists that are featured in my magazine. I have tried to adapt my style of writing that features on the double page spread to make it more appealing to this particular age group. I have ensured that the article/interview is short enough to stop the reader from loosing interest. The age group I have aimed my magazine at is portrayed as being independent, individual and rebellious. All of the models and artist I have featured embody these characteristics. These are just some of the typical stereotypes that are associated with teenagers and young adults. My magazine would also challenge the negative attitudes towards teenagers, that are often portrayed in other types of media products. I have tried to ensure that young adults are represented in a positive way. However, examples of drug and alcohol abuse are featured in the double page spread. But I have tried to make a negative situation into something that is positive and thought provoking. Age
4. Class Different bands and artists come from many different backgrounds in life, I have tried to make an example of this in my magazine. All of the artists featured in my issue are from various social groups. However, I have tried not to dwell on this as this is not what the magazine is about. Anarchy focuses on the musical talents of these young artists, not where they are in the social hierarchy. The main social group that is represented in the magazine is the working class. This is probably because the working class and middle class are the most common class in our society today. This would suggest that our audience is reflected in the magazine. < Working class, Arctic monkeys & Plan B < Upper class, Foals, Mumford and Sons & The Kooks
5. Ethnicity In the issue of my magazine I have featured two white, British models including the female I used on the front cover and on the double page spread. I have also featured an Asian model on my contents page. I have not necessarily targeted a particular ethnic group, however, I think it is important that my music magazine is multi cultural. During the planning of my media product I did not make a conscious decision to feature different ethnic groups in my magazine, it happened by coincidence. The artists that feature in the issue are there because of their musical talents, not because of their ethnicity. The different ethnic groups that feature in my magazine represent my key demographic, as there will be somebody for everyone to relate to in some way or another. Social Groups My music magazine is mainly focused on the indie genre of music. This would suggest that the key social group my product is aimed at is indie. My magazine represent this social group, including their lifestyle, fashion, photography and music.
