Why Utilities Should Care About
Electric Vehicles (EVs)
•EVs are an opportunity and challenge for the electric
sector
•EVs represent a load and revenue growth opportunity
for electric utilities
•Lower vehicle operating and maintenance costs benefit
customers and fleet operators
•The lack of tailpipe emissions improves public and
environmental health within the community
•If the new load is left unmanaged, customers can add to
system peak demand and stress grid infrastructure
10. #PublicPower www.PublicPower.org
EV Market Trends
•EV prices are coming down
•EV sales are increasing globally
EV sales in the US were not as high as hoped for
2019 (2018 sales were higher)
•EV range is improving
•More EV models are entering the market
•EVs go beyond personally owned vehicles
•The rate of charging infrastructure deployment is

Evaluate Rate Design and
Payment Options
•Utilities can examine their rate offerings to see how
they may be incentivizing or de-incentivizing EVs
•Rate design can also be used as a tool to help
manage new load
•For example, time-of-use (TOU) rates are popular
for EV specific rates because they can encourage
drivers to charge off peak
