Encore Studio Research Paper
It takes both an athlete and an artist to be able to dance. Dance requires you to have muscular strength,
flexibility, physical and emotional endurance. People usually question why dancers love what they do
when there is a whopping 80% of professional dancers that get injured every year. The answer is
simple though, what keeps them going though is the constant love and encouragement from friends
and family. Every since 1991, Encore Studio has upheld this common thought of love and
encouragement for its dancers. The studio is covered with their spirited colors of pink and black,
dispersed amongst paintings of ballerinas, to the wallpaper having glimpses of pink, grey, black, and
white. No matter if it is Monday night ballet, or Saturday ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Everyday, I go into the studio and hear a generous hello from a staff member. If the vibrant dance
bags, and leather jet black couches do not make you feel at home, then the dancers will. Mallory
Flores is an intern and dancer of 15 years at Encore Studio, and thinks Encore s sense of community is
what makes everyone feel at home whenever they step onto the dance floor. Not only does the sense of
community keep the dancers going, but it keeps the business running, as Karen Flores stated she loves
how the people she sees come in and out of the studio have a constant positive energy radiating off of
them . Yet, being at the studio for up to fourteen hours a week for some dancers does not keep them
from coming in and enjoying the curriculum taught in class. Not only does it drive the dancers to
come to class, but it keeps the teachers motivated to continue to put out their best work too. Angelina
Gallo thinks that The dancers at Encore are so passionate, they are kind, they are genuinely good
people... I think a lot of this stems from the dance training and the people that they are surrounded by

2 The outputs can be products, services, information and experiences. The transformation of inputs
into outputs can be physical conversion or alteration, transportation, storage or inspection when
dealing with goods. 3 For services, the change would be more at a personal or even psychological
level. From a value perspective, value is created when the value of the outputs is greater than the sum
total of the value of inputs. Asforthe word management , there has been long debate about its meaning.
For our purpose, we take the perspective of the functions that managers perform. The five traditional
functions that managers perform are planning, organising, coordinating and controlling of resources.
Combining these separate definitions into one, operations management can therefore be defined as the
planning, organising, coordinating and controlling of transformation of inputs to outputs. These
aspects can be represented in the form of a simple model as shown in Figure 1.1. b) Describe how

Good or Bad? Chris Purney For some people, violent role playing games are played all around in their
lives, including in school, at home, and in their car. There is a reason to this, and it starts at school.
There has been lots of research on both sides of the story, and while some people say it is a harmful
distraction from school, as it distracts them from homework, I believe it is a harmless distraction from
stressful school work and home drama. Research has shown that violent role playing games can put

Australia has been involve in many wars such as the Sudan war or World War 2. Australia has one of
the most diverse cultures concentrated in a small region, this is due to many factors, such as wars. The
first generation of the ethinic groups have most likely fled their home land to Australia for safety,
oppurtunity or resources.
During the Vietnam war, many civilians have migrated around the world, including Australia. Before
the war, Vietnamese and other non european migrants found it incredibly hard to gain permission to
migrate to Australia due to the White Austrlia policy. However, the aftermath of the Vietnam war
forced Australia to take refugees in, such as the Vietnamese and Indo Chinese. Note that there was

Many of the Iraq culture originated as refugees from the Iraq first gulf war. Similar situation to the
Vietnam war, Australia had obligation to take in refugees.
Many other wars, such as the Mayalsian, Korean, Japenese, Chinese boxer rebellion and South
African, happening prior to the Vietnam war has attracted refugees, not many came due to the White
Australian policy and the fact that the Orderly Departure program did not influence the refugees,
which is why there is a lower percentage of these cultures (excluding the Chinese due to their
migration after the Vietnam War).
Finally, the Aboriginal culture has been dwindled, where certain clans have died out. This is mainly
due to the White Australian Policy and the Stolen

In Trifles, the men (Attorney Henderson, Sheriff Peters, and Mr. Hale) are investigating the murder of
John Wright and conclude, by means of evidential findings, that Minnie Wright, wife of John Wright,
was the only possible suspect. However, the men could not find a clear motive to why she would kill
him. This lack of evidence is the last crucial piece to prosecute Mrs. Wright for the murder. Without a
possible motive, the jury would most likely be sympathetic to her, as they are to women in general
during this time period. Meanwhile, Mrs. Peters and Mrs. Hale, wives of Sheriff Peters and Mr. Hale,
believe they have found evidence to why Minnie Wright murdered her husband (finding a broken

College Essay
To many high school students, college seems like a far away land, a mysterious place where everyone
wants to be yet not many know how to get there. As children, our parents tell us how much time we
have to think about college, and that it is too far down the line to think about. The truth is it is never
too early to think about your future. I, like many people, put little thought into my future career and
now am lost in an unfortunate mix of indecision and anxiety. Not knowing where you want to be in
the future is a hard burden to bear. Many of us tend to find out that we only know what we do not
want, not what we actually do want. Do we want to be poor? Absolutely not. Do we want a boring

Pharmacists make, on average, $111,570 per year. To become a pharmacist in the United States, one
must receive a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, referred to as a Pharm.D, and being certified by passing
board exams (bls.gov). To be accepted into a Pharm.D program, one must complete at least two tears
of undergraduate study (usnews.com), while some attain a Bachelors degree in a science to better their
abilities. These courses include biology, chemistry, and calculus, among others. I think I would make a
good pharmacist because I have always had an interest in medicine. I also love helping people and
doing things for others. As a pharmacist, I would be able to study and work with medicine while
helping people understand their sicknesses, manage their health, and improve their overall quality of
life. The feeling that you just helped a person with a problem is very satisfying, and is having the
ability to save someone s life is more gratifying than any amount of money made.
To have the abilities necessary to help people, a good education is paramount. After looking at many

Wheeling Symphony Orchestra
I recently attended the opening night of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra at the Capitol Theatre in
downtown Wheeling. The experience of seeing a live orchestra for the first time was very unique and
pleasant to me. The feel and atmosphere was much different from what you would experience at a
country or hip hop concert. The venue was very quiet and respectful, no one was talking or playing
around on their cell phones. Whereas my prior concert experiences had consisted of musicians aiming
to be as loud and energetic as possible to invoke excitement in the audience, the orchestra put out a
different feel for the audience. The orchestra aimed to invoke and emotional and appreciative response
from the audience. The orchestra opened with Rossini s La Gazza Ladra Overture. This piece was
definitely a great opening segment because it builds suspense and ... Show more content on

She was very talented, and the dress made her stand out from the rest of the orchestra. She was very
emotional as she played. Due to the nature of her piece, it almost felt as if she were leading and the
orchestra was following behind her. This piece had only a very small brass section and no percussion
instruments were played to the best of my memory. I think I enjoyed this piece the most because I was
able to focus on the cellist and really see just how much passion she had through the way she played
each line. Following a short intermission, the whole orchestra was present for Shostakovich s Fifth
Symphony. This symphony was very long compared to the music I am accustomed to. The orchestra
took breaks every once in awhile for a few short seconds which I did not expect. The symphony had a
little bit of everything in terms of music and instrumentation. Some parts were sad, some dramatic,
and some energetic. At times, it almost felt to me as if the music was telling a story. The ending was
incredible; it was fast paced and full of

The Issue of the Commonwealth s Spending Pattern
Intro The issue of the Commonwealths spending power?????. The recent High Court decision of
Williams s v Commonwealth [2012] , saw the introduction of significant changes to this area, and the
forthcoming Williams v Commonwealth No 2 , currently before the High Court, will likely see issue
further developed. The debate surrounding this area has to do with the fact that in addition to the
legislative heads of power in sections 51 and 52 of the constitution, there are a number of other
constitutional provisions which the federal government has attempted to use as a source of
Commonwealth spending power. The two most frequently cited examples being the section 81
Appropriations power and the section 61 Executive power. In considering both of these sections the
High Court has come to the conclusion that the scope of the spending powers should be limited. This
essay will argue the position that the High Court is justified in this approach and, with reference to the
various principles of interpretation set out by the High Court and the notions of Federalism and
Responsible Government, will show that limiting the Commonwealths spending powers, outside of
the legislative heads of power and the grants power in section 96 is both constitutionally valid and
necessary for the democratic process in Australia. The question is asked should the commonwealth be
able to spend its money on anything it feels like including or should it be limited to expenditure on

Persuasive Dreamers
Introduction There has been lots of controversy lately on what Dreamers can do now, with the end of
DACA coming soon. The name Dreamers have been given to the people protected by the program
DACA, which have been protecting eligible immigrant youth who came to United States when they
were kids, from being deported back. Recently Donald Trump has made the decision to go the
Supreme Court to demand the end of the program. This has sparked the question on whether Dreamers
should have a pathway to U.S. citizenship. There are couple sides to take on this situation but the main
two points are there should not be a pathway as it is unconstitutional and only leads to more problems
and Dreamers should be able to go through a long process to achieve citizenship as it is the most
reasonable thing to do . However, this report is more analyzing each side s perspective, than rather
picking on.
Dream Act is Unconstitutional
According to Head of Federation of American Immigration Reform (FAIR), Dan Stein has described
DACA as, an overly broad and unconstitutional exercise of executive power by President Obama...
(Stein, 2017). Dan Stein has put a negative saying for DACA, but with further research on FAIR their
main goal is reduce overall immigration levels while respecting the basic human rights... (About
FAIR, 2017). This highlights the fact that the organization FAIR, believes their immigration policies
should implemented instead of the current one in the Dream Act for United

Questioning the Truth of the News Essays
INTRO/PROBLEMS
The window to the world can be covered by a newspaper, this quote by Polish writer Stanislaw Lec
sums up the problem with the news media. It is the job of the news media to provide the public with
news events happening around the world. Without these news reports, people would be oblivious to
what is going on around them. Our lives rest in the media s hands, and they are fully aware of this.
The news is a very competitive business, and because of this what gets reported is not necessarily
what the story is. Since there are different journalists reporting on the same events, each newspaper
and newscast has its own way and style of reporting. They also have different gate keeping processes
that make them unique. They may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The media focus on a few major news events and talk about them nonstop, until something new comes
along and the old stories are forgotten about. A good example of this has to do with the events after the
September 11th attacks. President Bush was ready instantly after the attacks to send troops to
Afghanistan to fight the war on terrorism. After a few weeks of news coverage about the war on
terrorism, our troops were all of a sudden being sent to Iraq because apparently they had weapons of
mass destruction there. After the news about Iraq, Afghanistan was nothing but a memory.
According to a news article in USA Today, written by Dave Moniz (2002), there are still soldiers in
Afghanistan, yet we never hear anything about them. This is the main job of the news media. They
give us the topics to form our opinions about. If it is not in the news, then it is not supposed to be
important to the people. Well if this is the case, then what about the people that have members of their
families over in Afghanistan? Are they not important?
Another major problem with the news media is that different news groups report on the stories that are
going to give them the best ratings, therefore all the news stations report on the same stories in order
to try and out do the other. One major example of when news stories get altered or even possibly
reported wrong is during a crisis. When a crisis is reported on, every news organization tries to get the
news first,

Relationship Between a Country s Economic Growth and Its...
Economic growth is the increase in the capacity of a country s economy to produce goods and
services. As a means of development and urbanisation, and a reflection of wealth and the living
standard in a nation, it remains a key focus of most governments. In this course of action, water bodies
may be polluted and contaminated due to waste (e.g. sewage and chemical waste) generated from
different sectors of the economy. However, water pollution is not inevitable despite a country s focus
on economic growth, and in fact can be mitigated and controlled. A prominent example would be that
of Singapore. Singapore is a highly developed market economy, with the 3rd highest GDP/capita in
the world of $51,709.45 USD (2012). It has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Industrial wastewater is to be treated to specified standards regulated by the the Environmental
Protection and Management (Trade Effluent) Regulations before being discharged into a sewer or
watercourse. Furthermore, to ensure that these standards are met, industries which generate large
quantities of acidic effluent, such as the aforementioned photochemical industries, are required to
install devices to monitor the acidity of discharge into public sewers. The PUB has also installed a
system to monitor the amount of chemicals in the sewers. Laws have been enacted such that offenders
who do not meet such requirements and cause water pollution via improper disposal of untreated
wastewater will be fined and jailed for up to 3 months, acting as an effective deterrent. Therefore, it is
evident that water pollution is not an inevitable result of economic growth (caused by the chemical
industry), as demonstrated in the example of Singapore, and through proper management and
treatment of waste products, the fate of water pollution can in fact be controlled. With economic
growth comes an increased quality of life including one s living environment etc. This brings about
greater access to products and facilities which will culminate in an increased consumption of goods
and ultimately, a larger percentage of domestic waste. 6.5

Persuasive Essay On A Flat Tax System
Wouldn t it be a perfect world if everyone paid their fair share of taxes? Shouldn t everyone have skin
in the game? For example, if the tax rate was 10%, then the person earning $10,000 per year would
pay $1,000 in taxes, and the person earning $100,000 per year would pay $10,000 in taxes. Does this
sound too good to be true? Many complain that our current tax system is broken and there has to be a
better tax system. During this last presidential campaign, the idea of a flat tax system was once again
discussed as an option by one of the candidates. Over the years, many bills have been introduced to
congress to change our tax system. Right now, Congress is debating on a new tax system. Our
President is pushing for change as he realizes the current system is not going to get the deficit down.
We may not see significant change this term, but it will be interesting to see how it all turns out. This
paper will discuss what is wrong with our current system, the possible solution of adopting a flat tax
system, the counter evidence of why a flat tax system is probably not the solution to our tax problem
and why this evidence is right. Our current system is very complex, not efficient, biased, and basically
not effective. Did you know the current tax code has over 9 million words? (books.google.com) (241
words) It s no wonder people want change. I think most would agree our current tax system needs
revised. We hear on the news how big corporations pay little in

Wearing a black blindfold, shorts and shoes, Tucker uttered his last words, Thanks for everything. .
The scene horrified Buchanan. A scene Warden Nash, had saw four times.
February of 1964 brought more criticisms to the penitentiary. In a study done by Myrl Alexander,
Director of the Southern Illinois University Center, he stated in a 15 page report, that there were many
problems at the penitentiary.
The report blamed Warden Nash and his officers. Officers who received a mere $262 per month, were
said to be under trained, and too old for the job. The study reported 490 acts of violence in a 30 month
period. Warden Nash attempted to compromise, stating that he would use more communication skills
and come down harder on his staff.
In the summer of 1964, Warden Nash attempted to integrate black inmates with white inmates. June
9th, several white inmates jumped 11 black inmates on their way back to their bunks. The whites wore

Homer s Use Of Authority In The Iliad
The word authority originated from the Latin verb augere which means to increase or promote. From
the perspective of an everyday usage it has broad meanings and associations such as power to enforce
obedience, or power to influence action and when we are using authority we are referring to a person
or group of people who exercise that power. Moreover, authority is associated with social force and is
linked to ideas of power through knowledge thus, we ought to respect it. Furthermore, authority
depends on collective consent and they are the ones who give approval to authorities in order for their
work to be a literary canon. Even though, the word canon was initially referenced only to religious

It starts with But Achilles was coming closer, like Enyalius here the poet is showing us the bravery of
Achilles by comparing him to the war of god and how good he is in the battlefield. He goes further on
by glorifying the war and the protagonist and enhancing it by saying The bronze around him glittered
like a blazing fire or rising sun. Also, Homer is eloquent in the language and that is proven by how the
choice of his vocabulary, for example when he was narrating the fastness of Achilles when chasing
Hector Pelus son went after him, sure of his speed on foot. Just as a mountain falcon, the fastest
creature of all the ones which fly, swoops down easily on a trembling pigeon as it darts off in fear, the
hawk speeding after it with piercing cries here, he is comparing the speed of Achilles with the fastest
bird and it is also an extended simile and he is trying to show us both the speed and power of the hero
and how he wants to devour its victory. These are just few examples of the similes the poet used but
we can see that he has in depth knowledge of the event and time is not a limited factor since he is able
to narrate the past, current and events that may happen in the future, he also knows what the Gods are

of their lives with one another in particular places. The focus might be on understanding the human
race and the meaning they produce through everyday interactions, or places, and the organizational
logics that guide our activities (columbia.edu, 2017). A discourse community comprises of a group of

The Politics Of The Global Essay
INTRODUCTION
The Politics of the Global gives us a narration of how development of international political economy
happens and an understanding of globalization. Globalization is frequently analyzed independently
and the author shows how globalization plays out in two multi cultural democracies; India and USA. It
portrays different political possibilities like colonial coercion, post colonial ambivalence and post
colonial co option that are opened by global relays of meanings, identities and power from historically
different locations. Globalization also explores a variety of spaces and strategies for resisting the
colonization of the global. The author identifies bureaucratic delays and red tape that happens in

Barbie and the Notion of Progression Since the emergence of the Barbie doll in 1959, Barbie has been
a populous choice among young children, and more specifically young girls because of its
monopolization of the toy market. Barbie is a doll that has been outwardly controversial and debated
upon for years and most likely will be for many years to come. The idea of the Barbie doll is a toy for
which young girls model themselves after and aspire to be like when they mature and grow up.

Another progressive Barbie, who stems from the I can be line, is Presidential Barbie. This is arguably
the most progressive Barbie has ever been. There have been multiple Presidential Barbie s all within

this Barbie is dressed conservatively, in a full pink suit, with the skirt landing below her knees and a
jacket to cover up much of her skin. This Barbie also comes equipped with platform shoes, which
allow her to stand on her own for the first time in fifty three years. This demonstrates independence
along with leadership, as she does not need someone to hold her up. The fact that she is running for
President and in doing so has stability, speaks volumes to the kind of women this Barbie is trying to
portray. Presidential Barbie has a platform in which she stands for which she titles the 5 B s . They
include, B a dreamer, B creative, B informed, B confident, and lastly B involved. Barbie s platform
illustrates positive messages for young girls and their futures. Another progressive aspect of
Presidential Barbie is that the creator, Mattel created this new doll in a partnership with The White

Book Report On The Book The Night
Today is September 1st, 1939 in Holland. Right now I m going to be writing a book, it is going to be
really good. I wish it would be published so that lots of people could read it and enjoy it. Once I m
finished with my book I will lend a copy to my good friends the Franks. The Franks are, Otto Frank,
Edith Frank, Margot Frank, and Anne Frank. So it s 1:00 in the afternoon and while I was in the
middle of writing my book I was interrupted by a loud, BANG! Then there were even more loud
noises and I started to think that they were gunshots, so I looked at my window and i saw a Jew laying
on the ground dead and next to him was a Nazi with a rifle. I quickly ran over to the Frank s House to
see if they heard the shots and they did. Every single one of us started wondering why they would kill
Jews. We knew it was because of Adolf Hitler, he is in control of the Nazis. Everyday now for the past
week there has been at least one killing of a Jew. I started to think that we were going to be in a war
with the Germans. The next day seven Jews were shot and killed and lots of people were being taken
to a place called Concentration Camps. It is a horrible place, they hardly feed you, it is just a complete
disaster. The Franks are going into this hideout called the Secret Annex, the Secret Annex is hidden in
Otto Frank s business place. The Secret Annex entrance is covered by a moving bookshelf. Also I have
to take care of my family too, my son and my husband. So everyday someone has

Testing Reaction Times of Local and Global Perception Essay
Global and Local Processing in Visual Perception
Abstract
This study examined visual perception and the rates at which global and local features are reacted to
with an aim of replicating and validating a previous experiment conducted by Navon (1977) to see if
global processing was faster than local processing. There was 222 University of Newcastle students
participating in the experiment, partaking in two phases, one centred round global processing, the
other around local processing, where there reaction times were recorded using a computer program
and imputed into a data worksheet. Results indicated that, as predicted, global processing occurred at a

It was therefore hypothesised that the reaction times for global judgments would be faster than the
reaction times of local judgments. It was also hypothesised that consistent stimuli would be faster than
conflicting stimuli in the local tasks.
Method
Participants
The sample for this study consisted of 222 participants who were second year psychology students
from the University of Newcastle. All students were participating as part of a course requirement and
all had given their consent to participating in the study.
Design
The independent variables consisted of 3 consistency types (contingent, neutral and conflicting
displays). The dependant variable was the reaction time of participants.
Apparatus
A computerised program SuperLab Pro and a keyboard was required in order to record reaction times.
Stimuli
In the first phase of this study that was based around recognising global features, the letters used were
large H s or S s. In the second phase, global letters of H, S and O were used and were made up of
smaller H s or S s, the local characters. These make up the 3 stimulus types: congruent, neutral and
conflicting. The large and small letters could be combined to create 3 types of displays: 1) Consistent,
where the large and small letters were the same (H printed from small H s, or S made of small S s). 2)
Conflicting (H made of small S s, S made of small H s), and 3) Neutral (H made of O s, S made of

Thomas Hooker And Reverend Samuel Stone
The history of Hartford begins with Thomas Hooker s arrival in Newtown (later renamed Cambridge)
Massachusetts where he became a pastor of one of the earliest established churches there. However,
voting in Massachusetts was limited to freemen or limited to people who had been formally
interrogated on their religious views and experiences. Hooker disagreed with these limitations and
their influential pastor, John Cotton. So, Thomas Hooker and Reverend Samuel Stone led a group of
one hundred people in 1636 and founded the settlement of Hartford. Which then led to the founding of
the Connecticut Colony and Hookers increased involvement in politics. On January 14, 1639 freemen
from the three colonies that made up the Connecticut Colony sat down and ratified the Fundamental
Orders of Connecticut which was called the first written constitution known to history that created a
government. It marked the beginnings of American democracy, of which Thomas Hooker deserves
more than any other man to be called the father. The government of the United States today is in lineal
descent more nearly related to that of Connecticut than to that of any of the other thirteen colonies
(John Fiske). Having been founded on such prestige Hartford has seen some of the greatest successes
and some of the worst failures. For example, Hartford claimed leader in both the industrial industry
and insurance industry. Hartford houses some of the most famous insurance agencies and firearm

A Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition
SCADA/ Stuxnet Worm A Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system consists of
both hardware and software that collects critical information to keep a facility operating (Johnson
Merkow, 2011, p. 227). SCADA system vulnerabilities include the lack of monitoring, slow updates,
lack of knowledge about devices, not understanding traffic, and authentication holes (Adams, 2015).
When an organization doesn t monitor the network, it makes it impossible to notice suspicious
activity. System updates are a very important part of protecting against vulnerabilities, even though it
may be seen as an inconvenience. The lack of knowledge about the devices is somewhat due to the
fact that the SCADA systems change over time. Therefore, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This put other organizations that used equipment from the same SCADA system supplier in jeopardy.
It also raised awareness of possible collateral damage (Chung, 2013). The Stuxnet worm infected a
significant amount of computers. Additionally, it changed part of the security infrastructure of the
United States. Stuxnet didn t prove that cyber attacks are low risk operations. Rather, it suggests that
the effects, and thus the risks, of cyber attacks are unpredictable (Manzo, 2013) . There are vulnerable
computer networks and systems that support U.S. economic activities, military capabilities, and
societal services such as critical infrastructure (Manzo, 2013). U.S. officials came to the conclusion
that the effects and risks of the Stuxnet operation were proportionate to the payoffs, other countries
might reach similar conclusions about cyber attacks against the United States (Manzo, 2013).
Improving cyber defenses, attribution capabilities, and developing credible retaliatory options will
play an important role in deterring and mitigating direct cyber attacks, but cascading viruses launched
at other countries could eventually penetrate and damage U.S. networks (Manzo, 2013) . ICS CERT

Online Gambling Act Research Paper
Republicans in September of 2006 attached the UIGEA to the SAFE Port Act, a very popular bill
designed to protect American ports from terrorism. By doing this, Republicans passed the bill without
most Democrats even being able to read it. It was likely believed that without it being attached to
another bill, it would not have passed, as many similar bills had been turned down. It was
subsequently signed into law by President Bush on October 13. The formulation of the policy was not
to criminalize individual Americans who were gambling. Instead, the act makes it illegal for banks and
financial institutions to process transactions for Internet gambling websites. (Rainey, 150) Therefore,
instead of turning more Americans into criminals, the act simply cut off the money flow going into the
foreign online casinos. The act basically defined illegal internet gambling as gambling that states had
already made illegal under their own laws. This meant that all 50 states likely had different rules and
regulations by which this bill must be interpreted. It also meant that 2 states, Utah and Hawaii, did not
allow any form of gambling at all. For most states, the ability for an institution to sell gambling means
obtaining a license. In the case of these foreign companies running online casinos that was all but
impossible. Along with trying to block the transactions of internet gambling, the act also made it a

Music And Its Effects On The Digital Age
Billy Joel, Nickelback, Fifty Shades of Grey and Other Causalities of Schlock
Music Professor explores the social dynamic of taste shaming in the digital age.
In some form or another, we ve all been exposed to musical taste shaming.
If you re a fan of the Eagles, Rush, Drake, or god help your soul, are passionate about the music of
Nickelback, you ve certainly received your share of barbs. As agents in what many have coined as the
age of hipsterism, none of us are safe from the smug judgment of those who perceive their own
musical tastes as a cut above the rest of us rubes.
Of course, hipsterism is just another term for yet another age that mimics the same social and cultural
elitist behaviours that have been occurring for centuries. Pomposity has always existed and generally
speaking, it is a personality trait of someone who is lacking a degree of authentic social awareness. I
mean, surely we can agree that it s myopic to judge someone s character based on their musical
preferences!
Although taste shaming is nothing new, shaming in today s digital world can have more profound
consequences than ever before. Through social media accounts, we re prompted to express ourselves
through vapid must complete field templates. For most of these platforms, they ask us to list our
favourite shows, movies and of course, music. This exposed information provides cyber bullies with a

Our world, as complex as it is, can be broken down into just 118 different elements. Some of these

The American Automotive Industry Incurred A Major Crisis
Between 2008 and 2009, the American automotive industry incurred a major crisis, on the heels of the
housing market collapse occurring in 2007 (Klier Ribenstein, 2013). General Motors was already in a
financial vulnerable situation at this time, having already filed a $10.6 billion dollar loss three years
earlier (United States Securities and Exchange Commission, 2005). In 2007, General Motors losses
for the year were $38.7 billion and its sales had dropped a full forty five percent from the year before
(Weardenm, 2009; Usborne, 2008). By the end of 2008, the company was in such bad shape that

This restricting led to the death of three of its brands, Saturn, Pontiac, and Hummer, and the selling of
another (Sweden s Saab) to Spyker, a Dutch auto group (Krebs, 2009; Ahlander Bailey, 2010). The
company was left with five business segments and only four brands (Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, and
GMC) (Senter McManus, 2013; Maynard, 2009b). This decision to file for bankruptcy and restructure
the company was an excellent one because studies have shown that restructuring of the internal
workings of an organization increases both the efficiency of the company and its value to the
stockholders (Brickley Van Drunen, 1990). The positive effects of this restructuring is evidenced by
the ability of the government to successfully sale the entirety of its GM stock in 2013 for a total price
of $39 billion and General Motors realizing a 19% increase in sales in 2014 (McGrath, 2015; Isidore,
2013). To determine which vehicle models in the remaining brands of Cadillac, Buick, Chevy, and
GMC to continue producing, the new General Motors would have needed to undergo some research
process to determine which brands had the most growth potential and were the most value
maximizing. There are three types of research that I would propose for General Motors to undergo: a
statistical analysis, a consumer survey, and a dealership survey. The statistical analysis would study

Deborah Tannen Women Are Unmarked
In the following, Deborah Tannen who is a Professor at Georgetown University says, that women are
marked and men are unmarked (130 135). This explains how women are being discriminated as
marked due to women s traits, and that men are unmarked because they do not have discrimination
traits. The term marked means it is a staple that relates to the way language is being said. Women are
marked in ways, such the appearance a woman has and having certain titles. Women are criticized
each and everyday just by how they are dressed. For example, if a woman wears a tight dress and
heels, it sends out a message to men who believe that women are looking for attention. However, if
women wear nonsexual clothes that sends a message to her to think about how she could be attractive.
Tannen states, If her clothes are not sexy then that sends a message, lent meaning by the knowledge
that they could have been (133). This is saying that if women see others dressed up, then it makes
them think how they as an individual can be like the sexy women. When it ... Show more content on

The Advantages And Dilemmas Of Child Care For Children
Tamai Butler
Coach Beale
Senior Capstone
March , 9 , 2018 One of the biggest decisions parents have to make after choosing to have a child
involves deciding who will care for that child, especially during the early developmental years.
Parents choose to resolve this difficult dilemma in many ways. Some families choose to use full time

families, a parent chooses to leave the workforce completely in order to become the primary caregiver.
Finding appropriate and affordable child care is often a challenge. There are different options available

Nonetheless, my parents friends would routinely leave their children under my care when we got
together with other families for play dates and tea parties they obviously saw something in me that I
grew aware of more strongly as I got older. If I was always naturally going to gravitate into a role
which involved caring for children, I get huge satisfaction from working with people in general, old or
young. As much as my current role is to do with how much I love to care for children, there are other
important aspects involved in my career path. It is not just communicating well with children that is a
vital skill but also how you communicate with the people that are most important to that child. As a
nanny you learn skills which enable you to help children to develop into happy, healthy little people.
To be able to show parents how to develop their own confidence and skills to care for their children
and see them build the closest of connections, must be one of the best feelings you can get as a

Atomic Bomb On Hiroshima And Nagasaki
Imagine yourself walking down the familiar road of your hometown following your daily routine. The
sky is then consumed by the deafening sound of airplanes. The people around you start to panic. You
then start fleeing towards your family and loved ones as realization hits you. However it is no use,
your life had ended. Thousands of people died instantly as an atomic bomb was dropped over
Hiroshima and Nagasaki, thousands more died because of the effect after. No weapon compares to the
magnitude of destruction an atomic bomb causes. In the history of the world, atomic bombs have only
been used twice. This was during World War II in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. On June 1941, the
Manhattan Project was commenced under the care of the U.S. Office of Scientific Research and
Development. In the eyes of formal President Truman, the war was bloody and violent and gone for
way too long. The war had already claimed many lives and it was time to put a stop to it. Already in
1939, physicist of the United States were scared of the chance of Germans studying nuclear fission.
Albert Einstein then proposed the idea of this military weapon to then president, Franklin D.
Roosevelt. Manhattan Project would be the code name for this secretive project. In 1943, Harold C.
Urey set a cooperation deal with England and Canada, bringing even more scientist to work on the
new military weapon. By the end, the project grew to cost two billion dollars. On July 16th of 1945,

Chinese Parents Are More Successful Than Western Parents
On January 8, 2011, the Wall Street Journal published an article by Amy Chua called Why Chinese
Mothers Are Superior. In this article Chua argues that Chinese parents are more successful than
Western parents when it comes to academics and musical talent. In addition, she discusses three
differences between the two parental mindsets. First, western parents worry too much about their
children s self esteem. Second, Chinese parents believe their children owe them everything because
they brought them in this world. Third, Chinese parents believe they know what is best for their
children. Even though their mindsets are different, Chua believes that all decent parents want to do
what is best for their children. (Chua) From a Westerners perspective, the Chinese s harsh parenting
methods increases academic success and self esteem; however, their methods damage social skills.
Amy Chua s methods focus heavily on academic excellence. She enforces these methods by using
extremely strict discipline, involving insults, punishment, and threats. These methods appear harsh;
however, they are successful. In her article, she states Western parents will praise their child when
they receive an A or even a B, while Chinese parents become instantly angry if it is not an A. In fact,
Chinese mothers will do everything they can to improve their child s grade because they know they
are smarter than producing anything lower than an A. Parents do not realize telling children that they
are smarter

Navajo Indian Tribe Research Paper
Navajo Indian Tribe Are Native Americans from the Southwestern United States. They are one of the
largest tribes of American Indians in the world. They lived in the Southwest areas that are today
known as New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. Their Navajo came from the Spanish who called
them the Apaches of Navajo. They called themselves Dine or the People . I chose to write about the
Navajo Indians Tribes because I would like to learn more about them. The Navajo s lived in domed
shaped houses with a wood frames called Hogan s with walls made of clay. The doors always faced
east so they could see the sun rise. The Navajo were farmers who grew the three main crops that many
Native Americans grew: beans, corn, and squash. The Navajo began to farm sheep and goats as well
when the Spanish arrived in the 1600 s, with sheep becoming a major source of meat. They also
hunted animals like deer and rabbits for food. They made dishes like mutton stew, fried cornbread, and
even grilled prairie dog. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They first learned to weave cotton from the Pueblo peoples. When they started to raise sheep, they
switched to wool. These blankets were valuable and only the wealthy leaders could afford them. For
this reason, they were often called Chief s Blankets. Today, Navajo rugs and blankets are still in
demand and can still be quite expensive. In the olden days of the Navajo, the arts and crafts were
divided between men and women. Women wove blankets and made clay pots while the men made
jewelry. One form of jewelry that is still popular today is silver jewelry. The Navajo like to use
turquoise in their jewelry as

Warren Harding. Warren Harding Was Our 29Th President And
Warren Harding
Warren Harding was our 29th president and took over administration after Woodrow Wilson in 1921.
Warren Harding was a weak leader for our nation and is considered to be one of the worst presidents
America has seen. While in office Harding was involved in multiple scandes, affairs, and criminal
activity. Warren s strategies on things such as domestic affairs, foreign policy, and executive orders
expose how weak of a leader he really was and can explain why he was a bad president for the U.S.
Warren Harding was born in 1865 on a farm in Ohio. Warren Harding, a Republican, began his
political career in 1898 by winning election to the Ohio senate. Harding was Ohio s lieutenant
governor for 2 years (1904 1906), and was later ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their Republican platform condemned the Wilson administration for its handling of World War I and
opposed the League of Nations. On trade and immigration, Harding and Coolidge advocated a higher
protective tariff and supported new immigration requirements. Overall, they promised to return the
nation to more normal times, like those prior to all the out of control drives for reform that had begun
in the 1890 s.
During Harding s presidency there was a lot of economical issues that needed to be fixed. A source
said, His biggest issue was the economy, which was suffering from World War I and its aftermath. The
soldiers came home in 1918 and 1919 and faced an 11.7 percent unemployment rate in 1920 . This
explains that our economy was falling apart and Harding need to come up with a plan to fix what was
falling apart quickly. Harding proposed a plan to reduce government spending, pay down the national
debt, and reduce tax rates. This was the Harding economic program. A source states that, Harding had
done nothing except cut government expenditure, the last time a major industrial power treated a
recession by classic laissez faire methods, allowing wages to fall to their natural level, (An economic
lesson from Warren G. Harding). Harding had an easy going personality and overall wanted peace and
love throughout the nation. This was not a bad quality to have, but as president Harding had a hard
time saying no to people and taking a strong

The Pros And Cons Of Collective Bargaining
One of the first laws President Roosevelt enacted was National Relations Act. This law was signed
into law in 1935. The key provisions of this law is to ensure workers are protected within the industry.
The most popular aspect of this is collective bargaining. This law also curtail certain private sector
labor and management practices, which can harm the general welfare of workers businesses, and the
U.S. economy (National Labor Relations Act). Collective bargaining establishes negotiation between
the workers and the employees. This is an attempt that certain things are compromised between the
managers and the owners. This pertains to salaries, work hours, healthcare, and among others. This
bill Is considered one of the important and profound piece of legislation ever passed because it began
a wave of the federal government being supportive of unions. Unions increased dramatically for many
years after that. Another key provision of this act is essentially, the worker have power to unionize, the
owners do not have a right to interfere. Collective bargaining is the hallmark of benefits of the workers
or employees within the organization. As stated prior, there were very little regards for workers in the
entity. Workers were working for longer hours, unsafe working conditions, and were paid a meager
salary. The nature of collective bargaining have evolved over the years and took a drastic turn. An

  • 2. Encore Studio Research Paper It takes both an athlete and an artist to be able to dance. Dance requires you to have muscular strength, flexibility, physical and emotional endurance. People usually question why dancers love what they do when there is a whopping 80% of professional dancers that get injured every year. The answer is simple though, what keeps them going though is the constant love and encouragement from friends and family. Every since 1991, Encore Studio has upheld this common thought of love and encouragement for its dancers. The studio is covered with their spirited colors of pink and black, dispersed amongst paintings of ballerinas, to the wallpaper having glimpses of pink, grey, black, and white. Mallory Flores is an intern and dancer of 15 years at Encore Studio, and thinks Encore s sense of community is what makes everyone feel at home whenever they step onto the dance floor. Not only does the sense of community keep the dancers going, but it keeps the business running, as Karen Flores stated she loves how the people she sees come in and out of the studio have a constant positive energy radiating off of them . Yet, being at the studio for up to fourteen hours a week for some dancers does not keep them from coming in and enjoying the curriculum taught in class. Not only does it drive the dancers to come to class, but it keeps the teachers motivated to continue to put out their best work too. Angelina Gallo thinks that The dancers at Encore are so passionate, they are kind, they are genuinely good people... Chris Purney For some people, violent role playing games are played all around in their lives, including in school, at home, and in their car. There is a reason to this, and it starts at school. There has been lots of research on both sides of the story, and while some people say it is a harmful distraction from school, as it distracts them from homework, I believe it is a harmless distraction from stressful school work and home drama. Research has shown that violent role playing games can put academic concepts to good use, make students think outside the box to solve their own problems, as well as let students take a relaxing break from ... As children, our parents tell us how much time we have to think about college, and that it is too far down the line to think about. The truth is it is never too early to think about your future. I, like many people, put little thought into my future career and now am lost in an unfortunate mix of indecision and anxiety. Not knowing where you want to be in the future is a hard burden to bear. • 8. Wheeling Symphony Orchestra I recently attended the opening night of the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra at the Capitol Theatre in downtown Wheeling. The experience of seeing a live orchestra for the first time was very unique and pleasant to me. The feel and atmosphere was much different from what you would experience at a country or hip hop concert. The venue was very quiet and respectful, no one was talking or playing around on their cell phones. Whereas my prior concert experiences had consisted of musicians aiming to be as loud and energetic as possible to invoke excitement in the audience, the orchestra put out a different feel for the audience. The orchestra aimed to invoke and emotional and appreciative response from the audience. The orchestra opened with Rossini s La Gazza Ladra Overture. I think I enjoyed this piece the most because I was able to focus on the cellist and really see just how much passion she had through the way she played each line. Following a short intermission, the whole orchestra was present for Shostakovich s Fifth Symphony. This symphony was very long compared to the music I am accustomed to. • 9. The Issue of the Commonwealth s Spending Pattern Intro The issue of the Commonwealths spending power?????. The recent High Court decision of Williams s v Commonwealth [2012] , saw the introduction of significant changes to this area, and the forthcoming Williams v Commonwealth No 2 , currently before the High Court, will likely see issue further developed. The debate surrounding this area has to do with the fact that in addition to the legislative heads of power in sections 51 and 52 of the constitution, there are a number of other constitutional provisions which the federal government has attempted to use as a source of Commonwealth spending power. The two most frequently cited examples being the section 81 Appropriations power and the section 61 Executive power. In considering both of these sections the High Court has come to the conclusion that the scope of the spending powers should be limited. This essay will argue the position that the High Court is justified in this approach and, with reference to the various principles of interpretation set out by the High Court and the notions of Federalism and Responsible Government, will show that limiting the Commonwealths spending powers, outside of the legislative heads of power and the grants power in section 96 is both constitutionally valid and necessary for the democratic process in Australia. The question is asked should the commonwealth be able to spend its money on anything it feels like including or should it be limited to expenditure on topics related to ... Recently Donald Trump has made the decision to go the Supreme Court to demand the end of the program. This has sparked the question on whether Dreamers should have a pathway to U.S. citizenship. There are couple sides to take on this situation but the main two points are there should not be a pathway as it is unconstitutional and only leads to more problems and Dreamers should be able to go through a long process to achieve citizenship as it is the most reasonable thing to do . However, this report is more analyzing each side s perspective, than rather picking on. Questioning the Truth of the News Essays INTRO/PROBLEMS The window to the world can be covered by a newspaper, this quote by Polish writer Stanislaw Lec sums up the problem with the news media. It is the job of the news media to provide the public with news events happening around the world. Without these news reports, people would be oblivious to what is going on around them. Our lives rest in the media s hands, and they are fully aware of this. The news is a very competitive business, and because of this what gets reported is not necessarily what the story is. Since there are different journalists reporting on the same events, each newspaper and newscast has its own way and style of reporting. They also have different gate keeping processes that make them unique. They may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The media focus on a few major news events and talk about them nonstop, until something new comes along and the old stories are forgotten about. A good example of this has to do with the events after the September 11th attacks. President Bush was ready instantly after the attacks to send troops to Afghanistan to fight the war on terrorism. After a few weeks of news coverage about the war on terrorism, our troops were all of a sudden being sent to Iraq because apparently they had weapons of mass destruction there. After the news about Iraq, Afghanistan was nothing but a memory. According to a news article in USA Today, written by Dave Moniz (2002), there are still soldiers in Afghanistan, yet we never hear anything about them. This is the main job of the news media. They give us the topics to form our opinions about. If it is not in the news, then it is not supposed to be important to the people. Well if this is the case, then what about the people that have members of their families over in Afghanistan? Are they not important? Another major problem with the news media is that different news groups report on the stories that are going to give them the best ratings, therefore all the news stations report on the same stories in order to try and out do the other. One major example of when news stories get altered or even possibly reported wrong is during a crisis. When a crisis is reported on, every news organization tries to get the news first, ... As a means of development and urbanisation, and a reflection of wealth and the living standard in a nation, it remains a key focus of most governments. In this course of action, water bodies may be polluted and contaminated due to waste (e.g. sewage and chemical waste) generated from different sectors of the economy. However, water pollution is not inevitable despite a country s focus on economic growth, and in fact can be mitigated and controlled. A prominent example would be that of Singapore. Singapore is a highly developed market economy, with the 3rd highest GDP/capita in the world of $51,709.45 USD (2012). It has been ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Industrial wastewater is to be treated to specified standards regulated by the the Environmental Protection and Management (Trade Effluent) Regulations before being discharged into a sewer or watercourse. Furthermore, to ensure that these standards are met, industries which generate large quantities of acidic effluent, such as the aforementioned photochemical industries, are required to install devices to monitor the acidity of discharge into public sewers. The PUB has also installed a system to monitor the amount of chemicals in the sewers. Laws have been enacted such that offenders who do not meet such requirements and cause water pollution via improper disposal of untreated wastewater will be fined and jailed for up to 3 months, acting as an effective deterrent. Therefore, it is evident that water pollution is not an inevitable result of economic growth (caused by the chemical industry), as demonstrated in the example of Singapore, and through proper management and treatment of waste products, the fate of water pollution can in fact be controlled. With economic growth comes an increased quality of life including one s living environment etc. This brings about greater access to products and facilities which will culminate in an increased consumption of goods and ultimately, a larger percentage of domestic waste. 6.5 ... For example, if the tax rate was 10%, then the person earning $10,000 per year would pay $1,000 in taxes, and the person earning $100,000 per year would pay $10,000 in taxes. Does this sound too good to be true? Many complain that our current tax system is broken and there has to be a better tax system. During this last presidential campaign, the idea of a flat tax system was once again discussed as an option by one of the candidates. Over the years, many bills have been introduced to congress to change our tax system. Right now, Congress is debating on a new tax system. Our President is pushing for change as he realizes the current system is not going to get the deficit down. We may not see significant change this term, but it will be interesting to see how it all turns out. This paper will discuss what is wrong with our current system, the possible solution of adopting a flat tax system, the counter evidence of why a flat tax system is probably not the solution to our tax problem and why this evidence is right. Our current system is very complex, not efficient, biased, and basically not effective. Did you know the current tax code has over 9 million words? Overall the programmes fall into the categories of popular drama and light entertainment, and although it is obvious that the women reject news and the political content of current affairs programmes, it would be wrong to contend that they do not have access or exposure to news or politics. She concluded her finding by saying that between radio and television, radio which is transmitted every hour, is relatively accessible; it is also introduced by music which is recognizable, bright and repetitive and demanding of attention and that the programmes which the women watch and listen to, together with the programmes which they reject, reinforce the sexual division of spheres of interest, which is determined both by their location in the home and by the structures of femininity that ensure that feminine values are secondary or less real ... • 25. Testing Reaction Times of Local and Global Perception Essay Global and Local Processing in Visual Perception Abstract This study examined visual perception and the rates at which global and local features are reacted to with an aim of replicating and validating a previous experiment conducted by Navon (1977) to see if global processing was faster than local processing. There was 222 University of Newcastle students participating in the experiment, partaking in two phases, one centred round global processing, the other around local processing, where there reaction times were recorded using a computer program and imputed into a data worksheet. It was therefore hypothesised that the reaction times for global judgments would be faster than the reaction times of local judgments. It was also hypothesised that consistent stimuli would be faster than conflicting stimuli in the local tasks. Method Participants The sample for this study consisted of 222 participants who were second year psychology students from the University of Newcastle. All students were participating as part of a course requirement and all had given their consent to participating in the study. Design The independent variables consisted of 3 consistency types (contingent, neutral and conflicting displays). The dependant variable was the reaction time of participants. Apparatus A computerised program SuperLab Pro and a keyboard was required in order to record reaction times. Stimuli In the first phase of this study that was based around recognising global features, the letters used were large H s or S s. In the second phase, global letters of H, S and O were used and were made up of smaller H s or S s, the local characters. These make up the 3 stimulus types: congruent, neutral and conflicting. The large and small letters could be combined to create 3 types of displays: 1) Consistent, where the large and small letters were the same (H printed from small H s, or S made of small S s). 2) Conflicting (H made of small S s, S made of small H s), and 3) Neutral (H made of O s, S made of ... • 27. Thomas Hooker And Reverend Samuel Stone The history of Hartford begins with Thomas Hooker s arrival in Newtown (later renamed Cambridge) Massachusetts where he became a pastor of one of the earliest established churches there. However, voting in Massachusetts was limited to freemen or limited to people who had been formally interrogated on their religious views and experiences. Hooker disagreed with these limitations and their influential pastor, John Cotton. So, Thomas Hooker and Reverend Samuel Stone led a group of one hundred people in 1636 and founded the settlement of Hartford. Which then led to the founding of the Connecticut Colony and Hookers increased involvement in politics. On January 14, 1639 freemen from the three colonies that made up the Connecticut Colony sat down and ratified the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut which was called the first written constitution known to history that created a government. It marked the beginnings of American democracy, of which Thomas Hooker deserves more than any other man to be called the father. The government of the United States today is in lineal descent more nearly related to that of Connecticut than to that of any of the other thirteen colonies (John Fiske). When an organization doesn t monitor the network, it makes it impossible to notice suspicious activity. By doing this, Republicans passed the bill without most Democrats even being able to read it. It was likely believed that without it being attached to another bill, it would not have passed, as many similar bills had been turned down. It was subsequently signed into law by President Bush on October 13. The formulation of the policy was not to criminalize individual Americans who were gambling. Instead, the act makes it illegal for banks and financial institutions to process transactions for Internet gambling websites. (Rainey, 150) Therefore, instead of turning more Americans into criminals, the act simply cut off the money flow going into the foreign online casinos. The act basically defined illegal internet gambling as gambling that states had already made illegal under their own laws. This meant that all 50 states likely had different rules and regulations by which this bill must be interpreted. It also meant that 2 states, Utah and Hawaii, did not allow any form of gambling at all. For most states, the ability for an institution to sell gambling means obtaining a license. The company was left with five business segments and only four brands (Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, and GMC) (Senter McManus, 2013; Maynard, 2009b). This decision to file for bankruptcy and restructure the company was an excellent one because studies have shown that restructuring of the internal workings of an organization increases both the efficiency of the company and its value to the stockholders (Brickley Van Drunen, 1990). The positive effects of this restructuring is evidenced by the ability of the government to successfully sale the entirety of its GM stock in 2013 for a total price of $39 billion and General Motors realizing a 19% increase in sales in 2014 (McGrath, 2015; Isidore, 2013).
