Online Cross-Modal
This study examines the manner people process language through visual and auditory sensory
modalities under different study conditions, by measuring a person s percentage of correctly
responding if a word is real or fake and how much time it took the individual to react to their decision.
The study condition for congruent words, in which the audio recording of words matched the real
English word shown on the computer screen, had a significant effect in helping participants process
the words more quickly and accurately as possible when making a lexical decision. The study
condition for incongruent words, in which the audio recording of words mismatched the real English
word, also showed an effect in slowing down a person s response time and ... Show more content on

Lexical decision evaluates how quickly a person can classify words and non words through the use of
stimuli s. The conditions of the study facilitated manipulations in visual and auditory stimuli s to
measure reaction time and accuracy when exposed to different circumstances, such as the auditory
stimuli matching/mismatching the visual stimuli/words. This study found that congruent and
incongruent conditions impacts accuracy and reaction time when choosing if the type of letter string
presented is either a pseudo word or a word. This finding suggests congruent or matching auditory
words and visual words assists people in quickly recognizing a word or non word and is more accurate
with their decision. Incongruent or mismatched auditory words and visual words slow down peoples
decision making and minimizes their choice from being correct. In addition, the findings of the study
also suggest that pseudo words and words had no effect on a person s accuracy but rather their
reaction time. The result for the types of letter string administered in the experiment proposed that the
visual stimuli s/words does not interfere with a person from correctly making a decision, but makes
people slower in making a decision. Overall, this online

Modern Influences Of The Epic Of Gilgamesh
The Modern influences of The Epic of Gilgamesh Who says Gilgamesh ever died? (Ziolkowski 57).
The Epic of Gilgamesh has remained a widely read story throughout the years. The Epic of Gilgamesh
is a story of an imperfect hero on a journey for everlasting life. It features Gilgamesh, the king of
Uruk, and Enkidu, a wild beast man, on a journey of heroic quests and misadventures. This story has
inspired many new literary and visual works in many languages; it has also inspired modern
archeologists to learn all about the ancient city from the epic. The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest epic
known to date. It is an old Babylonian tale first written down in Sumerian. The first known copy of the
epic is dated to around 2100 to 2000 B.C.E. However, it is believed to have originated many years
earlier passed along though oral story telling. The epic was used in Babylonian schools to teach
literature to students (Puchner 36). In ancient times, the Epic of Gilgamesh was widely read from
Mesopotamia to Syria to Levant and Anatolia. The epic was also translated into non Mesopotamian
languages such as Hittite (Puchner 34). The story we know today was expanded upon around 1200
B.C.E. by a Babylonian priest. The eleven tablet version may be said to have assumed its present form
during the latter part of the second millennium (Abusch 618). It was then written down again and
stored in the library of an Assyrian king named Ashurbanipal (Ziolkowski 55 56). It was thanks to this
act that

Program Music Manifestation
Program Music Manifestations.
The great age of program was at the time of the nineteenth century. Program music is the type of
music that aims to evoke an image, or convey an impression of events. Program music is usually
connected with stories, poems, ideas, or scenes. Program music has four types of manifestations:
program symphony, tone/symphonic poem, concert overtures, incidental music.
Program music, in general, has been around, in many forms, for centuries, but it became highly
prominent in the romantic period, when the music was associated with literature. Also, in program
music they aim for the music to express feelings more than descriptions. The first type of the program

The Types Of Bone Tissue
Bone tissue is a connective tissue with an abundant matrix of intercellular substances that encloses
widely separated cells. The bone matrix is made up of an inorganic component known as mineral salts
that hardens the bone, and an inorganic component collagen fibres and an amorphous mixture called
ground substance, which gives the bone its strength (Tortora, Grabowski 2001). There are three types
of cells that can be found in the bone, they are osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes. Osteoblasts are
the cells that synthesizes a specialized organic material called osteoid which is important in the build
up of mineralized bone, osteoclasts are relatively larger multi nucleate cells made up of mitochondria
and lysosomes that are responsible for the continuous erosion of bones. Lastly the last cells found in
the bone are osteocytes, these are adult osteoblast cells found in the lacunae that have been surrounded
by mineralized matrix. (Thibodeau, Patton 2003).Osteocytes are responsible for maintaining
metabolism within the bone such as the exchange of nutrients with the blood.
There are four types of bones short bones, long bones, flat bones and irregular bones, which have
different characteristics so at to be able to function effectively. Long bones are greater in length than
width and is made up of varying numbers of ends and a shaft, an example is the humerus which is
located in the arm. Short (sesamond) bones are almost as broad as they are long, such bones can be

Gender Wage Gap Sociology Essay
This paper explores the sociological effects gender wage gap in all aspects of our society. Gender
wage gap is when a Women is paid 79% of what men are paid, the gap is referencing the 21% gap in
between what a man is paid and what a women is paid. This topic relates to Sociology because it
pertains to social inequality, gender pay Discrimination, gender segregation, gender diversity,
patriarchy, feminism, and gender inequality. African Americans and Hispanics have the biggest gap in
pay and white and Asian women have the smallest gap. Inequality with Race and wage gap are one in

Gender wage gap is the one type of discrimination that has received the most outcry. Wage gap affects
women of all races, especially African Americans and Hispanics. Your mother, your sister, niece, aunt,
grandmother and your daughters are affected by this gap in pay. Gender wage gap affects everyone
because it tell you that we all live in a society that judges someone s worth based on thier sex and not
their ability and qualifications. Hispanics and Latinos are paid 55 cents to an average man s dollar, an
African American woman is paid 60 cents, a white woman 77 cents to every man s dollar. Gender
wage gap does not only focus on paying women less but paying women that are minorities way less.
This is a social problem that began years ago, Although the government is making strides to eradicate
gender wage gap we still have a long way to go. This disparity should be everyone s concern not just
women. This wage gap leaves working woman and their familie shortchanged because the gap
translates into $10,762 less per year for an average working

A Genetic Engineering Outline
o TH Morgan concluded that chromosome play an important part in heredity and the passing on
genetic traits o Griffith injected mice with different types of bacteria and when he injected them with
S cells, the mice died. When the mice were injected with the R cells, they continued to live. The mice
would survive if they were injected with heat killed S Cells but died when given a dosage of heat
killed S Cells and normal R Cells. The reaction of the two cells was the possible and most likely death
of the mouse. o Avery, Macleod, and McCarthy took the findings of Griffith and wanted to reason why
the combination of the two cells killed the mouse. The took the different parts which would cause the
DNA, Protein, and RNA and eventually eliminated them one by one. After all of that, only bacteria
that was exposed to the S strain DNA were transformed. This gave the idea that DNA is what was
controlling living things and was the outcome of this experiment o Hershey and Chase Radioactively
tagged and then tracked infected bacteria in order to prove that DNA was in fact the molecule of
heredity and transferring of genetic material o Chargaff proved two very important rules about DNA,
All species have different amounts of adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine in their DNA
The Amount of Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Thymine in each species DNA is different. o Crick
and Watson used X ray diffraction data, which Rosalind Franklin developed which was then used to

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster

Research Paper
24 April 2015
The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster was a nuclear accident that
occurred in 2011 at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant following an underwater earthquake that
produced tsunamis, eventually resulting in a full nuclear meltdown and toxic amounts of radiation
being dumped into the atmosphere. This particular nuclear disaster is infamous because, despite the
earthquake and tsunami, it is still considered a man made disaster. Had Fukushima plant workers been
properly trained regarding what to do in the event of a nuclear disaster and had the Japanese
government reacted more swiftly and efficiently, the damage to the reactors would have been less
extensive and a full nuclear meltdown could have been prevented altogether. The factors that led to the
meltdown, however, can be learned from and used to develop better safety procedures and educate
people so that hopefully the next nuclear accident can be avoided in the future. Simply put, the nuclear
reactors at the Fukushima plant use chemical reactions to boil water, producing electricity. They
achieve this through the process of nuclear fission, which is the splitting of an atom in two and gives
off energy in the form of heat. If one of the pieces of the split atom collides with another atom, that
atom will then undergo fission and hit other atoms which will undergo the same process. This chain
reaction of splitting atoms continues on

Construction Of Retaining Walls, Standard Compaction Test...
For this project I learnt and gained proficiency in several civil engineering topics like retaining walls,
Standard compaction test, Direct shear test and Geotechnical engineering methods, etc. I have done
thorough research before design work and got expertise in retaining walls its operation. I have taken
several examples as references available in academic books, like how to design and which parameters
to be considered, explained below in detail:

In this project, I designed and executed the construction of Retaining Wall to resist the lateral pressure
of soil when there is a desired change in ground elevation that exceeds the angle of repose of the soil.

In this project, Retaining Wall was designed to serve the purpose of supporting levelled ground. The
site mostly consisted of gravelly sand with 5 10% silt. This served as a backfill material to the
retaining wall. In addition to this, the backfill was filled with crushed boulders covered with sand
serving the levelling purposes.
CE 3.9
In the very beginning of this project, I collected soil samples from site to analyse the backfill material
and to determine the soil properties by conducting different laboratory experiments. Various tests
performed and analysed the back fill as follows:
* Standard compaction test (determined the dry density and optimum moisture content)
* Direct shear Test (evaluated C Ø parameters)
* Sand replacement Test (determined the bulk density of soil).
With the laboratory results, I analysed the wall by considering the Rankine s Earth Pressure theory for
different failure conditions like Failure by Sliding, Failure by Overturning, Failure of soil due to
excessive pressure at toe or tension in the heel and Bending failure of stem or base.
Tasks assigned to me and how I accomplished them:
CE 3.10
The tasks I did in this project are analysis, design and execution of construction work. I considered
design of more economic section of retaining wall. For this design I adopted the LIMIT STATE
METHOD, considered all the possible economic iterations in the material of the wall. I used to prefer

Between all of the factors that outline the scientific studies such the theories, hypothesis and even law
but what differences and similarities do they share? A scientific theory is usually said to be a well
tested concept that explains an endless supply of observations. For example we obviously know that
the Earth revolves around the sun and has been tested through observation and experiment which
clearly cant come up with another explanation to contradict this theory. On the other end of the
spectrum we have scientific hypothesis which is commonly seen as a possible explanation for a set of
observations or answer to a scientific question must be testable. A great example that can be used is if
you were to test smokers and observing which

Mane Jelly Fish Research Paper
In order to understand and aid an endangered organism it is important that one must be able to identify
spatial and temporal characteristics centered on the organism s means of energy intake. This includes
not only how they search, forage or capture their prey, but also what their prey is and where it can be
found geographically. This experiment specifically focuses on the foraging aspect of an endangered
species, the Leatherback Sea Turtles, in order to see how their prey influences their foraging behavior
and success. The problem that most researchers have been faced with when regarding this topic is the
fact that most prey are encountered and consumed at great depths by the organism. Thus, there is not a

Thus, they concluded that these temperate waters off of eastern Canada play an extremely important
role in the Leatherback s survival as they allow them to capitalize on seasonally abundant prey in
coastal temperate waters, showing that their migratory patterns are a necessity in order to ensure their
survival by allowing them to come gorge off of the abundance of food. The scientists actually found
out that the turtles, when they come to the waters off of eastern Canada, increase in mass by roughly

explaining the similarities and differences between the book The Hobbit and the movie Wreck It
Ralph. To find which has a stronger Heroic Journey. The Hobbit is a stronger Heroic Journey than
Wreck It Ralph. This can be seen through a comparison of the departure, initiation, and the return.
Wreck It Ralph was definitely shorter than The Hobbit. The hobbit was more into detail and feelings,
and had way more adventures to overcome. Wreck It Ralph didn t have as many obstacles and it wasn

Wreck It Ralph matches up pretty much even with The Hobbit for the departure. The hobbit has a little
more for the initiation, and The Hobbit definitely has more for the return than Wreck It Ralph. In the
departure of Wreck It Ralph, Ralph is in his own game doing what he does everyday: wrecking things.
Everyone is scared of him and thinks that he could never become a hero. During The Hobbit, the
hobbit is at home in his hobbit hole all nice and comfy until asked to go on this weird journey. The
part that makes it weird is that hobbits don t go on adventures. During the initiation of The Hobbit
there was a lot of dangers and obstacles to overcome such as the forest of the spiders, the woodeleves,
finding the keyhole, finding Smaug, and lots of other events. The initiation for Wreck It Ralph was
less exciting and didnt have obstacles such as receiving the medal, destroying the car, and helping
Vanellope win the race. Wreck It Ralph did not have an exciting return. All of the dangers were
destroying the candy game so Ralph had to go in and save the game. When the game was saved,
everyone went home and everything went back to normal. For The Hobbit, Bilbo stalled when he was
supposed to go home by visiting his new friends. Bilbo was also knocked down by the dragon so the
others had to help him. When Bilbo returned home, everyone was excited to see him and surprised to

The Punishment Of The American Prison System
Whenever you imagine prison, you think up ideas and violent images that you have seen in the movies
or on TV. Outdated clichés consisting of men eating stale bread and drinking dirty water are only a
small fraction of the number of horrible, yet just occurrences which are stereotypical of everyday life
in prison. Perhaps it could be a combination of your upbringing, horrific ideas about the punishment
which our nation inflicts on those who violate its more serious laws that keeps people frightened just
enough to lead a law abiding life. Despite it s success in keeping dangerous offenders off the streets,
the American prison system fails in fulfilling its original design of restoring criminals to being
productive members of society, it is also extremely expensive and wastes our precious tax dollars.
As children, most people learn obedience through punishment. When we do something wrong , one or
several privileges are taken away by our parents. Depending on the severity of a mistake, such
punishment may last for a very short time or in some cases it may even be permanent by nature. Many
parents inflict a common punishment on their young children of not allowing them to watch television
for a certain amount of time which is usually measured in days or in weeks. Such disciplinary methods
often prove to be positive learning experiences which teach us right from wrong and instill us with
values which should prevent us from doing it again. Similarly, the prison system

How I Got An Xbox 360
Growing up I was very active. I enjoyed going outside and playing sports. Most of the time my friends
and I would throw the football, ride four wheelers, or do anything that included being active and
moving around. Then there were days it would be raining and we could not go outside, or it be night
time and had to stay inside. When I could not go outside, I was bored and I complained about being
bored all the time. We did not have much technology items in our house. So, finding stuff to do to
entertain myself was a challenge. Then I started playing video games, I got a phone, and I found out
that YouTube had come out and that change my life. I got an Xbox 360 when I was ten. My step dad
had a PlayStation and I played it some, but this Xbox 360 was my first gaming console. The first
Xbox was released and many people had it, even my cousin. There was about twenty five million
Xboxes sold (xbox). I never did get to get that first Xbox, but I got the second one the Xbox 360. The
second one was more successful than the first selling over eighty million consoles (xbox). I would
play all night. I beat all the games and then would start over because I did not have Xbox Live, which
is where there is a chance to play with other people online. My friends and I would still go outside and
play sports or do something, but if we couldn t find something to do right away we would go play
video games. Then I started playing video game a lot more. I would play anytime I did not have

Existential counselling is a philosophical form of counselling which addresses the situation of a
person s life and situates the person firmly within the predictable challenges of the human condition.
Existential counselling considers human living to take place within four dimensions: physical, social,
psychological and spiritual. It shows each of these dimensions to be constituted like a force field,
within which predictable paradoxes, tensions and dilemmas play out. Human beings can learn to deal
with these tensions and conflicts more effectively by facing up to the negatives as well as the positives
of their lives, including the tensions of life and death, love and hate, strength and weakness and
meaning and absurdity. Best known ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We may even choose actions that cause harm to ourselves or to others. Reflecting on these behaviours,
with the help of a psychologist, gives us insight into the reasons we chose these actions and helps us to
learn from our mistakes and make better choices in the future. You do not need to be an existentialist
to benefit from existential therapy; you need only a desire to be happier and a willingness to reflect
upon how your choices are part of the solution. Existential Therapy is an approach to counselling that
helps us to understand ourselves, other people and the world we all inhabit together. Existential
Therapy helps people to build confidence that they are making good choices. Existential Therapy is
not reserved solely for people who suffer from severe psychological problems; it is for everyone who
is having trouble making a good decision when they experience the kind of challenges issued by life.
Existential Therapy provides an opportunity to explore the world including the dreams, fantasies and
spiritual dimensions of our existence. Talking about it helps to identify dilemmas, develop a strategy
to deal with them and then grow from the experience. Irvin David Yalom, M.D. (born June 13, 1931),

education is a form of instruction that serves to help individual students with disabilities in the
classroom, or any other setting that is considered acceptable by the Individualized Education Program
(IEP) team. The process used to determine special education starts when either a teacher or a parent
makes a referral to have an individual student evaluated to determine if there is a disability. Special
education comes at no extra cost to the parents of the student. Gibb and Dyches (2016), mention how

Gibb and Dyches (2016) state, Academic achievement refers to gaining requisite skills and knowledge
for success in school (p. 47), and functional performance can be defined as applying knowledge and
skills to meet daily needs (p. 47). Reading, writing, and math are academic achievement skills that are
crucial to the students learning because they all are required for other subjects. In contrary, functional
performance involves adaptive skills such as feeding and dressing oneself, and meeting appropriate
school behaviors. Gibb and Dyches (2016) mention that the PLAAFP statement derives from
reviewing the curriculum standards for academic achievement, determining the students current
academic strengths and limitations, and assessing the students current functional strengths and
limitations (p. 48).
Measurable Annual Goals
Measurable annual goals are used to identify what the individual student is expected to achieve within
one year to address what effects the disability has caused. Gibb and Dyches (2016) define the word
measurable as the behavior stated in the goal can be observed and measured to determine when it has
been achieved (p. 60). Therefore, in order to be considered a measurable academic and functional
performance goal the goal must be able to be measured, must meet the individual student needs that
are in relation to the disability and cause problems within the general education curriculum, and must
also meet any other additional

Essay on Comparing The Soldier and Dulce et Decorum Est
Comparing The Soldier and Dulce et Decorum Est
The Soldier by Rupert Brooke and Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen were both written during
world war one. War and death are the themes of both poems but they are written from different
perspectives. Brooke seems to base his poem on myth because overall he says that it is good to die for
your country while fighting at war is terrible and that it is every soldier for himself and not for your
country.
There are many reasons why Brooke and Owen have different attitudes to war. For example Brook
wrote The Soldier at the beginning of the war but Owen wrote it in 1916. Brooks wrote his poem as
someone who hasn t been at war and at this time people ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Owen also shows how the men feel and how they look. Take for example when Owen is describing in
the final stanza the man which died from the earlier gas attack, Behind the wagon that we flung him
in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil s sick of sin, If you
could hear, at every dolt, the blood come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs. Bitter as the cud. Of
vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues.
In Brook s poem of The Soldier he uses his language softly to show the people at home that the war is
good and that if people die there for their country they are looked upon as an honourable person. But
in Owen s poem of Dulce et Decorum Est, it uses language harshly by using similes and metaphors to
emphasise the misery he witnessed and the violence of war. Here are some examples, Drunk with
fatigue; deaf even to the hoots of gas shells dropping softly behind. , His hanging face, like a devil s
sick of sin. , My friend, you would not tell with such high zest to children ardent for some desperate
glory, the old Lie: Duke et decorum est Pro parr/a man
The Soldier suggests death is something to be welcomed and is simply a step towards an even better
after life. However, Owes makes no reference to what follows death and this suggests that for him

Black Panther Party Essay
Huey Newton and Bobby Seale were two African American men growing up in the ghetto of
California where they saw and experienced racism and police brutality. There voices were not heard
when it came to their communities. It took three young children to die by car crashes, and a peaceful
candlelight vigil that turned into a fight between a neighborhood and the police (in which the police
covered up their badges so that no one could report them to the police department) for them to want to
make a change to free themselves from control and oppression. It was because of this that 25 year old
Huey Newton and 30 year old Bobby Seale founded The Black Panther Party for Self Defense in

In this essay I will be explaining to you three things that I have learnt from presentations during this
inquiry. Here are the three presentations that I will be talking about. Mountain biking in the Redwood
forest by Moss Stanford. Prisons by Tahuriwakanui, Thomas Poysden and Hoani Lawrence. And
economic cars by Matt Crockett. I will be Talking about these topics because I found them interesting
and I have some interesting information about them. The way I found out this information was by
taking notes while I was listening to them present to the whole class. The first one I will be talking
about is Moss s MTB Project. In Moss s Inquiry he was talking about Mountain Biking in the
Redwood Forest. Through out his presentation I learnt that 30% of mountain biking trails are in the
forest. I found this interesting because I have only rode my bike in the forest had haven t yet found a
MTB trail that is not in the forest. I think that their are not many trails in the forest because the forests
have been logged for their valuable wood. I also found it interesting how some people see a sign
saying that this trail is closed due to logging . This really stupid because you can get badly hurt by
debri on the trail and falling trees. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through out their presentation I learnt that prisoners sneak mobile phones into the prison to take
footage of fights. The way they sneak their phones into prisons is, they take them apart and hide them
in the heel of their shoes. The reason they take them apart is so that they can fit. And when the guards
aren t looking, the prisoners organise a fight. They then get recorded and put of the social media. I
think a good solution to this would be to check their shoes or wave a metal detector over their whole
body before they walk inside the

Analysis Of The Martin Guerre Scandal
For historians, very little is known about the detailed lives of peasants in the sixteenth century France,
in particular, their emotions, motives, and how they characterize relationships. The most common
assumption for the life of peasant was an uneducation, monotonous lifestyle with little interesting
factors. Fortunately for social historians, a strange occurrence happened in the small village of Artigat
in the Pyrenees of Southwestern France and was perfectly documented and preserved by a judge of the
court, Jean de Coras. While the court case and storyline was very detailed by Coras, there were many
gaps in the characters motivations and reasonings behind their actions. A man named Martin Guerre
left his wife and child for several ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this statement, Davis implicates that the lives of the three commoners and the events that occurred
can be very similar to that of the elite class in France at the time. Right from the start, Davis
establishes her motives which discloses the notion that she is writing this story with her motive in
mind instead of looking into historical facts and considering all aspects of the event. Her entire
narrative fills the gaps with opinions solely placed to persuade readers of Davis own viewpoints,
creating a skeptical review of the rest of her writing.
One of Davis major accusations in the Martin Guerre record is Bertrand s role in the imposter s
successful foolery of the town. Davis believes that much like the upper class, the peasants only seek
out activities that benefit their own self interest. Davis supports this idea by making the claim that
Bertrande was knowledgeable of the crime of impersonation and decided to partake in it. She quotes:
She must have realized the difference; there is no mistaking the touch of a man . Either by explicit or
tacit agreement, she helped him become her husband (Davis 44). This claim that Davis makes seems
very reasonable at first. It would make sense for Bertrande to aid in Pansette s impersonation; she was
stuck in a rut where she was unable to completely carry on with her life because she was tied down to

Descriptive Experience
I was scared, no I was terrified. This was all one big new experience. First plane ride, first time out of
the country, first time being away from my family for longer than 3 days, first time without any access
to the internet; it was a trip full of firsts. I was so nervous I ve never done anything like this before and
couldn t believe it was happening now. On the car ride to the airport I couldn t breathe I finally
cracked. I acted cool, calm, and collected, but then it all hit me at once. Everything was hot, it was
hard to breathe, and my stomach was turning. I have never felt so unprepared for anything in my life.
Serving in Guatemala for two weeks with people I didn t know and no access to the ones I loved back
in the United States. I don t know why I signed up for this as the trip kept going I was regretting my
decision more and more. The airport was HUGE and complicated. The other adventurers were
intimidating, they ve all done this before; I was the newbie. Guatemala scared me. I was sleep
deprived and couldn t stay awake on the bus ride to the hotel. I hated not knowing exactly where I was
and which way was north as I could tell so easily back in Blanding by looking at our extravagant
mountain. Everything was different, and I didn t know what to think of it. We arrived at the hotel,
everyone seemed excited and seemed to fit right at home. Me, I was screaming internally. There was a
monkey watching a yelling at us wherever we went. Everyone said

Outcome
How does technology effect the way our generation learns and behaves?
Technology is, by definition The application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially
in industry. We use technology accomplish various tasks in our daily lives, in brief; we can describe
technology as products, processes or organizations. We use technology to extend our abilities, and that
makes people as the most important part of any technological system.
(Use of Technology, 2017) This report identifies how technology effects sleep, the prices and costs of
technology, the positive and negative effects technology has on younger people such as bullying or
learning more at school, the difference between past generations and their use of technology and how/
if technology effects the brain and students learning and behaviour such as memory and attention
spans. A variety of sources including surveys and internet reports/ sites were used to gather
information to be used within this report.
A common statement typically heard is don t go on your phone at night you won t be able to sleep and
as we all know sleep is a really important part of our health. The reason being on our phones or any
other form of device at night prevents us from sleeping is due to the bright colours and screen those

Tonight I Can Write... Tonight I can write... is one of the best poems written by the great Pablo
Neruda. He was known as a poet when he was 10 years old. He wrote in many different styles,
including passionate love poems such this chosen poem. This is one of the greatest poem I ve ever
came across. Pablo really expressed his love and feelings towards his no longer loved one. Reading
this poem showed me how loyal and strong he is as well as remembering all the memories whether
they were a happy memories or sad ones. This poem also shows the reader from the beginning, how
their relationship was kind of great and then how things got escalated quickly and the conflict that he
was fighting between himself when he couldn t forget her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem begins with a statement which is repeated 3 times throughout the poem in line 1, 5 and 11
which created rhythm. This helps the reader to come back to that phrase and be able to fully
understand the depth of what the writer is feeling.
Next, when the writer said The night is shattered and the blue stars shiver in the distance , he used
imagery which is when words are used to create visual images. In this line, the writer creates an image
of the night s sky in readers mind and describes them as far away. These

My Papa s Waltz Essay
At first glance, My Papa s Waltz by Theodore Roethke is very intriguing as the poem is very
ambiguous at first. Many people that read the poem at first believe it to be about child abuse, which is
very easy for readers of the 21st generation to confuse as we see everything with a dark meaning
behind it. The poem is about a boy who dances with his father, hence the name of the poem My Papa s
Waltz . Once the poem has been reread several times, we can take a closer look at what Roethke is
really implying in the poem. Therefore, it becomes clear to the audience that the poem has a lighter
meaning and has a more positive outlook than a negative outlook to the situation occurring in the
poem. In the first two stanzas, the speaker, who is a very ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The poem is much more innocent than what the modern reader may think. We can start off by looking
at the title of the poem My Papa s Waltz. A waltz is a ballroom and folk dance. Clearly, the speaker of
the poem is speaking about his father and the dance. In the first stanza, the speaker explains how such
waltzing with his father is not easy, as speaker s father has had a little too much whiskey, which made
the waltzing a little difficult as the father was under the influence and probably had difficulties
keeping his balance. If we read on to the next stanza, it shows father is all over the place and having
trouble keeping balance while dancing with his son in the kitchen. Mother seems to be upset about the
situation, but only because pots and pans slid from the kitchen shelf onto the floor from all the
romping. As we move on to the next stanza, the speaker explains how fathers knuckle is battered,
which is most likely a result of injury from romping in the kitchen. Speaker also speaks about his right
ear being scraped with every step his father missed. This could be because the speaker was a young,
short boy who reached his father s waistline and as they danced roughly the buckle will scrape his

Andrew Carnegie Rhetoric
Andrew Carnegie rose from a bobbin boy in a textile factory to become one of the richest men in
America. In the late 19th century, Andrew Carnegie was known as one of the wealthiest Scottish
American industrialist who basically ran the American steel industry in the late 19th century. Some
people believe that Andrew Carnegie was a philanthropist automatically means he s a Captain of
Industry. However Andrew Carnegie was a robber baron, and was wealthy for that exact reason.
In such manner, Andrew Carnegie treated his workers as such a robber baron would, which is poorly
and in dangerous conditions. Furthermore, Andrew Carnegie was unsympathetic for his workers
health seeing as he had put them in unhealthy and dangerous conditions. ... Show more content on

However, this is inaccurate because he had treated his workers like they were nothing, even putting
them into the situation of dangerous conditions. There are many more characteristics to a Captain of
Industry but robbing companies, and putting your workers in dangerous conditions is not one of them.
Yes, the men call this the deathtrap he repeated my guide; ... they wipe a man out here every little
while.... Sometimes a chain breaks, and a ladle tip over; and the iron explodes like that.... Sometimes
the slag falls on the workmen from the roadway up there (Page 357). He fools other people with his
donations making it seem like he is captain of industry when in reality he also put people in dangerous
conditions and pay them not enough for it. He doesn t help his workers enough with the wages and
dangerous conditions. His workers not being the only evidence of him not being a captain of industry.
A man watches out, why, all right! But you take it after they ve been on duty for twelve hours without
sleep, and running like hell, everybody tired and logy and it s a different story (Page 357). Andrew
Carnegie was someone who put his workers in the kind of danger that any day one of the workers can
get trampled or killed by one of the machines especially since they are tired from working long hours.
Andrew Carnegie had no kind heart, nor cared for his workers instead he was inconsiderate and
selfish, he was only for himself and money, which do not display a Captain of Industry nor a

How Does Pip Change Throughout The Novel
Change is a constant presence everyday and everywhere. Time goes by and everything changes to
what it was to what it is. Mountains turn to pebbles. Nature changes to survive. People s experiences
change them for the better or for the worse. From the beginning of Great Expectations to its end, all of
Pip s experiences and hardships shape him from a little boy naive to the reality of the world to a man
of virtue. In part one of Great Expectations, Pip is shown to be a naive child who leads a miserable
existence, which is evident on the way he acts, the way he thinks, and the way he views the world

In the third part of Great Expectations, Pip learns the meaning of loyalty from Magwitch and from
Joe. When Magwitch introduces himself as Pip s benefactor, Pip is horrified, but Magwitch shows Pip
the meaning of loyalty with his full belief that Pip would become a gentleman. It wasn t until
Magwitch died that Pip understood what exactly loyalty was and that understanding made him realize
just how horrible a person he had been to everybody around him, especially Joe and Biddy. When Pip
becomes sick and Joe comes to London to care for him, Pip says, Oh, Joe, you break my heart! Look
angry at me, Joe. Strike me, Joe. Tell me of my ingratitude. Don t be so good to me! (Dickens 493).
The quote shows that Pip understands how arrogant and insulting he had been to Joe and Biddy all
those years ago and just how loyal and kind Joe had been to him his entire life. Despite asking for
punishment from Joe, Joe doesn t do anything but hug him out of joy and by doing so demonstrates
his loyalty to Pip even more. Magwitch s and Joe s displays of loyalty to Pip push him to change one

education, communication, problem solving, research, decision making and everything. The whole lot
will be merged to IT in the near future. The wired world of business, where technology, human talent,
and a new way of doing business make up to day s growing worldwide economy. The backbone of this
electronic commerce is the internet. While it s rapidly spreading there are also rapid changes in every
instance of time as addition of new sophisticated technologies and new standards etc.
Though communication technology is currently undergoing a massive revolution, these advances and
the accompanying benefits have not yet filtered down to those in developing nations with antiquated
and outdated technology. This project attempts to address this need by developing a system that
harnesses the power of the Internet, which is the most economical and yet most widely available and
accessible global network in existence.

In the Eyes of the Beholder
Coming of age in the United States has its privileges, you can vote, drink and buy spray paint. That s
right, spray paint. Many states, including Texas and Florida prohibit selling spray paint to minors.
That means that, without an adult, under age graffiti artists cannot purchase the medium needed for
their creative work. Unlike other styles of art, graffiti denotes passionate emotional controversy. Ask
anyone to describe graffiti and you are likely to hear anything from vandalized walls full of writings to
beautiful commissioned murals. This paper will explore this intriguing creative expression, why it has

To the little artist both were deliberate, but to the audience the wall print was unwelcomed and a
nuisance to be cleaned up.
To some, Picasso s WOMAN WITH FISH HAT painting may look like a beginner s attempt, but to an
expert it has immensely inventive intensity (Hans 154). To the untrained eye, Jackson Pollack s art
looks like haphazard splatters of paint. In the crime thriller CONTRABAND a seemingly tarp full of
paint was discarded by thieves, later the canvas was revealed to be a Pollack original worth millions.
Amateurs consider many famous artworks as junk but connoisseur valuable them as treasures. Who is
right? If Pollack had painted his famous, No 5, on a city wall would it still be valued at $140 million
or would it be considered worthless graffiti by youth vandals.
America graffiti acquired its bad rap from the hippie era. Protesters of the Vietnam War and other
political and worldviews began to appear on college campus and city walls. Gangs emerged from an
increase of immigrants and their need to integrate. Many youths in large cities such as Los Angeles
and New York City joined gangs to help them gain a group identity, defend themselves against other
groups, and establish a unified presence. (Doak 16). Gangs identify themselves in many ways; their
clothing, colors, even their language and slang terms helps differentiate themselves from other gangs.

trillion have been added to the US national debt and at the end of fiscal year of 2016, the amount is
expected to be approximately $22.4 trillion including federal, state and local. Debt per citizen will be

war against global terror, bail out the banks and the budget of the plan to recover the economy after
the crisis in 2008. And finally the US national debt reached 120.6% of GDP in 2014 and still kept

The surge in national debt during Bush and Obama administrations
It is true that there was a surge in US national debt in past decade, the total federal debt was reaching
105% of GDP in 2012 which is the historically highest level since the Second World War. Although
the crest existed in the president term of Obama, however, the rise of debt started long before Obama
took office in the While House.
In fact, after the national debt decline at the end of 20th century, it resumed increasing with Bush s

How To Quit Crutcher
Based on my experience with facing difficult decisions, I recommend Crutcher s Running Loose for
young readers who are dealing with similar issues. Running Loose is a novel that deals with Louie

boy s life we impacted but mine as well. Facing a big decision just as Louie did, is horrifying and may

The Pros And Cons Of Gentrification
Everyday buildings and shops seem to be coming to a rust and becoming of age. There is a process in
which it gives the neighborhood or streets a fresh new sense to the community. In doing this brings in
a variety of different people from different customs and making the community more diverse. This
process is called gentrification which is urban change, particularly, the transformation of a low income
or economically depressed area of a city into a higher income more economically prosperous.
Gentrification is not tied to race and ethnicity but social class. Although it seems like all negatives to
the community because they have lost their childhood store or restaurant, there are positives to
gentrification. Gentrification is beneficial to our community because of the displacement of not only
the buildings but of the people, urban renewal, and property value. During gentrification there are
certain displacements that improve and benefit our community as a whole. The displacement of people
coming from all different races and culture increasing the diversity in the communities and not only
create a diversity but also benefits the citizens around that community. Although some people believe
the increase of diversity is a negative and will cause harm, studies found no evidence of displacement
or harm ( Buntin). In 2010, a university examined gentrification across the nation as whole and they
saw that when african americans are living with a more diverse community (with whites

Pan-Asian American Racial Identity
Invisibility threat: The consequences of being rendered invisible for less prototypical Asian American
subgroups
Asian Americans often come together to advocate for their community in various ways. For example,
to raise awareness of the lack of representation of Asian Americans in Hollywood, people may
highlight Asian American actors that should be given more recognition and roles in Hollywood. Some
names that tend to make these lists are Constance Wu, Jamie Chung, Lucy Liu, Steven Yeun, or John
Cho (cite). However, the names of South Asian and Southeast Asian actors such as Hannah Simone,
Aasif Mandvi, and Lana Candor may be less likely to be listed. Similarly, to raise awareness of the
racism and prejudice faced by the Asian American community, ... Show more content on

Consider the frustrations of bisexual and/or transgender individuals when the LGBTQ community s
experiences are defined largely by the experiences of gay and lesbian individuals (LGBT Advisory
Committee, 2011). Self identified bisexuals make up the largest single population within the LGBTQ
community in the U.S. (Egan, Edelman, Sherrill, 2008; Herbenick et al., 2010; Mosher, Chandra,
Jones, 2005). However, both research on the LGBTQ community and funding for LGBTQ
organizations tend to focus exclusively on gay and lesbian individuals, rendering bisexual individuals
invisible and sidelining or eclipsing their particular needs (Miller, André, Ebin, Bessonova, 2007).
This invisibility has serious consequences for bisexual individuals sense of belonging within the

Anabolic Steroids In The Sports World
In today s sports world, performance enhancing drugs have become more and more of a problem.
Famous athletes with records upon records do not always play by the rules. Celebrities with countless
amounts of fans and admires turn out to be nothing but a cheater. These athletes are paid millions of
dollars to simply perform, entertain, and follow the rules of their respected sport. Performance
enhancing drugs (PED s) have changed the way we look at athletes and their legacies. One of the most
common PEDs used in the sports world is anabolic steroids. Of course a long list of other drugs come
to mind such as Adderall and testosterone, but they all increase the human body s physical capabilities

He owns the record for most Tour de France titles with seven. Most people pictured him as a world
class athlete and hero after not only defeating cancer, but demolishing his competing year in and year

the world effected by cancer. All of his fame came to a crashing halt in 2013 when he admitted that the
use of banned substances resulted in his success (Allen J.). Armstrong s name, image, and legacy
destroyed in the minds people all across the world. Even if he were still able to win those titles
without the use of illegal substances, the records and titles were all stripped from his name. Armstrong
s dope scandal opened the eyes of fans in every sport, causing them to have second thoughts on
professional athletes who find tremendous success in their respected sport. It also forced the sport of
bicycling to admit to problems related to drug use, leading to extreme anti doping involvement
(Pugmire L.) One man s cheating techniques has changed the entire sports community as a whole.
Another professional sports organization effected by the use of PEDs is the MLB. Crushing monster
homeruns that measure at extraordinary lengths is not an easy task. Throughout history the MLB has
ran into multiple dilemmas where some of the sport s biggest names have broken the rules. Barry
Bonds, the all time homerun leader in the MLB, and many other star baseball players were caught and
accused for the use of steroids and growth hormones during their careers. These stars were proven
guilty after a two year investigation of the BALCO scandal (Staff

Eyewitness Testimonies
Throughout the history of the United States judicial system, eyewitness testimonies an account from a
witness of a crime or an accident that involves the witness recounting their firsthand experience of the
incident to a court have been used as conclusive evidence to prove a defendant guilty. It is thought that
although memory can be unclear at times, it is assumed memories of stressful or otherwise threatening
events are well encoded into the brain, largely indelible, and therefore can be accurately recalled. This
idea is based off of the psychological concept of flashbulb memories which are sudden onsets of
emotionally significant events or memories ( Psychology Students ). However, recent psychological

Identification Of Civilian Population By The Hampshire...
The document is an from an archive taken from the Hampshire Record Office which includes a
government poster published in Britain during the time when WW2 had just began and evacuation
process had started to take place. Whilst carrying out research it is important to be able to understand
more about the context of this time. To some extent this poster is able to help us with our
understanding surrounding some of the details about the evacuation process as well as being able to
analyse some of the information that the government provided the citizens with during this time.
Whilst trying to understand and develop my research on evacuees and how records were kept and
handled, this document specifically is able to provide some insight into the different areas across Great
Britain and possibly develop upon this in order to compare and contrast research that is compiled over
a period of time.
The title of this document is Important announcement Dispersal of civilian population , this clearly
shows us that the purpose of the document was to inform civilians and to provide them with important
information that was necessary for the majority of the public to read and understand attentively. The
first section of the poster is titled, Children under 15 . In this section of the poster, it addresses the
issue of children under 15 travelling and how they must be accompanied by their mothers or another

New England Colonies Essay
The New England Colonies
The colonies of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut made up the New
England colonies. Most of the Europeans in the New England colonies were there to escape the
religious persecution they faced in England. They practiced a lot of different things in these colonies
compared to the middle and southern and colonies of colonial america. The New England colonists,
except for Rhode Island, were predominantly Puritans who practiced very strict religious lives. The
civil government in these colonies dealt quite harshly with those who dared to disagree with the
Puritan church. People were being exiled for speaking out against Puritanism. They whipped baptists.
They cropped, or cut off, the ears of Quakers. They even went as far as to hang Quaker missionaries.
They did all of this in an order to proselytize and convert people to be Puritan. Laws in the New
England colonies made everyone attend a house of worship pay taxes that would be used to fund the
salaries of the ministers. Government in the New England colonies were based upon elements of
theocracy. The leaders and officials got their authority from a divine guidance and their civil authority
was to enforce religious conformity. Citizens that didn t follow the Puritan s religious beliefs were
considered to be a threat to the civil order and would get severely punished for it. The New England
churches functioned a lot differently from the churches back in England.

Gender Roles In The Film The Silence Of The Lambs
In the film, The Silence of the Lambs (Demme, 1991), FBI student Clarice Starling challenges
traditional gender roles as she struggles to assert her equality and overcome sexism within a
traditionally male dominated profession. However, the constant pressures placed on Starling to mask
her femininity in order to gain respect, as a result of sexist attitudes portrayed in the film, as well as
Starling s reliance on male characters, undermine the movie s liberal feminist perspective and
reinforce a patriarchal ideology, thus rendering the film ideologically conflicted.
As a woman working as an FBI special agent, Starling is acting as a minority in this male dominated
field. It wasn t until 1972 that women were allowed to be special agents in the ... Show more content

It is obvious that Starling s contribution to the Buffalo Bill case is nothing to scoff at. She, often with
the help of her also female friend, is the one to embark on the small journeys and discover many of the
clues that lead to the discovery of Buffalo Bill, aka Jame Gumb. These include braving frequent
encounters with the unsettling Hannibal Lecter, discovering and searching the storage unit, and
uncovering the evidence that Gumb was making a woman suit, evidence which finally led her to his
elusive place of dwelling, while her fellow male agents led a fruitless storming of an empty house
miles away. She is also the one who in the end actually shoots and kills Gumb and physically and
officially brings his reign of terror to an end. All these instances of Clarice Starling s success in her
field do contribute to the idea of feminine power and equality. Here it would seem, that this acts direct
evidence of a female being able to equal and even supersede a males abilities. However upon close
examination, Starling s achievements are not without assistance from male figures and therefore
cannot be considered a truly feminine achievement. First off, she is deeply driven by the early death of
her father. Starling tells Lecter that her mother died when she was very young and her father was her
whole world. However, her father, a small town sheriff, was unjustly murdered in his work. Starling is
driven to her desire for achievement in the FBI by her immense longing to complete her father s work,
emulate his image, and thus metaphorically avenge his death by finally bringing justice upon those
who murder the innocent. Buffalo Bill, as the serial murderer of innocent young girls, serves as the
perfect target at which Starling can direct these ambitions. Therefore, it could be argued that without

Analysis Of The Poem Acquainted With The Night By...
The poem Acquainted with the Night by Robert Frost is not simply about a walk being taken on a
rainy night, as one would assume on their first reading. Instead a closer reading of the poem will
reveal to the reader a much darker journey. As the speaker describes his trudge through the city streets,
the reader begins to see that this is far more than a walk through a gloomy night; it is a man s journey
through depression. While Frost s dark poem is written much like a sonnet, having fourteen lines, it is
not a sonnet in the traditional sense, as it follows the terza rima rhyming scheme which is an
interlocking three line rhyme scheme: aba, bcb, cdc, ded, and so on (Meyer, 2012, p. 1673). Terza
rima is made up of tercets woven into a rhyme scheme that requires the end word of the second line in
one tercet to supply the rhyme for the first and third lines in the next tercet, continuing the pattern
until the final stanza or line. Borrowing this rhyme scheme from Dante Alighieri and by utilizing a
few lines a mere fourteen Frost is able to paint a convincing picture to the reader of the true feeling of
depression by using the literary elements of metaphor, imagery, and theme.
Frost uses metaphors in Acquainted with the Night to express the darkness and loneliness that are
familiar feelings for those that suffer with depression. Though the entire poem can be interpreted as a
metaphor for depression, Frost uses individual words and phrases as metaphors as well. In the

Essay On Harlem Renaissance
Imagine the bustling streets of Harlem during the 1920s, African Americans are in finest clothing that
they can buy going to their new jobs, people are chatting loudly as they walk down the stone streets;
Harlem clubs were vivid during the night, as people danced to swing music and Jazz music. It was
during this time where the african americans were free to work, to create, and to learn without any
backlash. They were no longer considered slaves; but rather brothers and sisters of america who now
held the power to change society and culture. They were no longer considered slaves; but now
considered themselves brothers and sisters of america. The african american community were the ones
that caused the phenomenon known as the Harlem Renaissance by showing their growth of unique
talents in the ways of fine arts, literature, and music to change their society. Many of the traits that
Harlem had during the 1920s had to start when slavery was still a real problem and fear for many
people. It was during 1901 that a man by the name of Booker T. Washington wrote his life story about

  • 2. Online Cross-Modal This study examines the manner people process language through visual and auditory sensory modalities under different study conditions, by measuring a person s percentage of correctly responding if a word is real or fake and how much time it took the individual to react to their decision. The study condition for congruent words, in which the audio recording of words matched the real English word shown on the computer screen, had a significant effect in helping participants process the words more quickly and accurately as possible when making a lexical decision. The study condition for incongruent words, in which the audio recording of words mismatched the real English word, also showed an effect in slowing down a person s response time and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lexical decision evaluates how quickly a person can classify words and non words through the use of stimuli s. The conditions of the study facilitated manipulations in visual and auditory stimuli s to measure reaction time and accuracy when exposed to different circumstances, such as the auditory stimuli matching/mismatching the visual stimuli/words. This study found that congruent and incongruent conditions impacts accuracy and reaction time when choosing if the type of letter string presented is either a pseudo word or a word. This finding suggests congruent or matching auditory words and visual words assists people in quickly recognizing a word or non word and is more accurate with their decision. Incongruent or mismatched auditory words and visual words slow down peoples decision making and minimizes their choice from being correct. In addition, the findings of the study also suggest that pseudo words and words had no effect on a person s accuracy but rather their reaction time. The result for the types of letter string administered in the experiment proposed that the visual stimuli s/words does not interfere with a person from correctly making a decision, but makes people slower in making a decision. Overall, this online ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Modern Influences Of The Epic Of Gilgamesh The Modern influences of The Epic of Gilgamesh Who says Gilgamesh ever died? (Ziolkowski 57). The Epic of Gilgamesh has remained a widely read story throughout the years. The Epic of Gilgamesh is a story of an imperfect hero on a journey for everlasting life. It features Gilgamesh, the king of Uruk, and Enkidu, a wild beast man, on a journey of heroic quests and misadventures. This story has inspired many new literary and visual works in many languages; it has also inspired modern archeologists to learn all about the ancient city from the epic. The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest epic known to date. It is an old Babylonian tale first written down in Sumerian. The first known copy of the epic is dated to around 2100 to 2000 B.C.E. However, it is believed to have originated many years earlier passed along though oral story telling. The epic was used in Babylonian schools to teach literature to students (Puchner 36). In ancient times, the Epic of Gilgamesh was widely read from Mesopotamia to Syria to Levant and Anatolia. The epic was also translated into non Mesopotamian languages such as Hittite (Puchner 34). The story we know today was expanded upon around 1200 B.C.E. by a Babylonian priest. The eleven tablet version may be said to have assumed its present form during the latter part of the second millennium (Abusch 618). It was then written down again and stored in the library of an Assyrian king named Ashurbanipal (Ziolkowski 55 56). It was thanks to this act that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Program music is the type of music that aims to evoke an image, or convey an impression of events. Program music is usually connected with stories, poems, ideas, or scenes. Program music has four types of manifestations: program symphony, tone/symphonic poem, concert overtures, incidental music. Program music, in general, has been around, in many forms, for centuries, but it became highly prominent in the romantic period, when the music was associated with literature. • 5. The Types Of Bone Tissue Bone tissue is a connective tissue with an abundant matrix of intercellular substances that encloses widely separated cells. The bone matrix is made up of an inorganic component known as mineral salts that hardens the bone, and an inorganic component collagen fibres and an amorphous mixture called ground substance, which gives the bone its strength (Tortora, Grabowski 2001). There are three types of cells that can be found in the bone, they are osteoblasts, osteoclasts and osteocytes. Osteoblasts are the cells that synthesizes a specialized organic material called osteoid which is important in the build up of mineralized bone, osteoclasts are relatively larger multi nucleate cells made up of mitochondria and lysosomes that are responsible for the continuous erosion of bones. Lastly the last cells found in the bone are osteocytes, these are adult osteoblast cells found in the lacunae that have been surrounded by mineralized matrix. (Thibodeau, Patton 2003).Osteocytes are responsible for maintaining metabolism within the bone such as the exchange of nutrients with the blood. There are four types of bones short bones, long bones, flat bones and irregular bones, which have different characteristics so at to be able to function effectively. Long bones are greater in length than width and is made up of varying numbers of ends and a shaft, an example is the humerus which is located in the arm. • 8. A Genetic Engineering Outline o TH Morgan concluded that chromosome play an important part in heredity and the passing on genetic traits o Griffith injected mice with different types of bacteria and when he injected them with S cells, the mice died. When the mice were injected with the R cells, they continued to live. The mice would survive if they were injected with heat killed S Cells but died when given a dosage of heat killed S Cells and normal R Cells. The reaction of the two cells was the possible and most likely death of the mouse. o Avery, Macleod, and McCarthy took the findings of Griffith and wanted to reason why the combination of the two cells killed the mouse. The took the different parts which would cause the DNA, Protein, and RNA and eventually eliminated them one by one. After all of that, only bacteria that was exposed to the S strain DNA were transformed. This gave the idea that DNA is what was controlling living things and was the outcome of this experiment o Hershey and Chase Radioactively tagged and then tracked infected bacteria in order to prove that DNA was in fact the molecule of heredity and transferring of genetic material o Chargaff proved two very important rules about DNA, All species have different amounts of adenine, thymine, cytosine and guanine in their DNA The Amount of Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine and Thymine in each species DNA is different. o Crick and Watson used X ray diffraction data, which Rosalind Franklin developed which was then used to develop the double ... • 9. The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster Sarah Byrnside PhySci 111 Research Paper 24 April 2015 The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster The Fukushima Nuclear Disaster was a nuclear accident that occurred in 2011 at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant following an underwater earthquake that produced tsunamis, eventually resulting in a full nuclear meltdown and toxic amounts of radiation being dumped into the atmosphere. This particular nuclear disaster is infamous because, despite the earthquake and tsunami, it is still considered a man made disaster. Had Fukushima plant workers been properly trained regarding what to do in the event of a nuclear disaster and had the Japanese government reacted more swiftly and efficiently, the damage to the reactors would have been less extensive and a full nuclear meltdown could have been prevented altogether. The factors that led to the meltdown, however, can be learned from and used to develop better safety procedures and educate people so that hopefully the next nuclear accident can be avoided in the future. Simply put, the nuclear reactors at the Fukushima plant use chemical reactions to boil water, producing electricity. They achieve this through the process of nuclear fission, which is the splitting of an atom in two and gives off energy in the form of heat. If one of the pieces of the split atom collides with another atom, that atom will then undergo fission and hit other atoms which will undergo the same process. This chain reaction of splitting atoms continues on ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In this project, Retaining Wall was designed to serve the purpose of supporting levelled ground. The site mostly consisted of gravelly sand with 5 10% silt. This served as a backfill material to the retaining wall. In addition to this, the backfill was filled with crushed boulders covered with sand serving the levelling purposes. CE 3.9 In the very beginning of this project, I collected soil samples from site to analyse the backfill material and to determine the soil properties by conducting different laboratory experiments. Various tests performed and analysed the back fill as follows: * Standard compaction test (determined the dry density and optimum moisture content) * Direct shear Test (evaluated C Ø parameters) * Sand replacement Test (determined the bulk density of soil). With the laboratory results, I analysed the wall by considering the Rankine s Earth Pressure theory for different failure conditions like Failure by Sliding, Failure by Overturning, Failure of soil due to excessive pressure at toe or tension in the heel and Bending failure of stem or base. Tasks assigned to me and how I accomplished them: CE 3.10 The tasks I did in this project are analysis, design and execution of construction work. During The Hobbit, the hobbit is at home in his hobbit hole all nice and comfy until asked to go on this weird journey. The part that makes it weird is that hobbits don t go on adventures. During the initiation of The Hobbit there was a lot of dangers and obstacles to overcome such as the forest of the spiders, the woodeleves, finding the keyhole, finding Smaug, and lots of other events. The initiation for Wreck It Ralph was less exciting and didnt have obstacles such as receiving the medal, destroying the car, and helping Vanellope win the race. Wreck It Ralph did not have an exciting return. All of the dangers were destroying the candy game so Ralph had to go in and save the game. • 15. The Punishment Of The American Prison System Whenever you imagine prison, you think up ideas and violent images that you have seen in the movies or on TV. Outdated clichés consisting of men eating stale bread and drinking dirty water are only a small fraction of the number of horrible, yet just occurrences which are stereotypical of everyday life in prison. Perhaps it could be a combination of your upbringing, horrific ideas about the punishment which our nation inflicts on those who violate its more serious laws that keeps people frightened just enough to lead a law abiding life. Despite it s success in keeping dangerous offenders off the streets, the American prison system fails in fulfilling its original design of restoring criminals to being productive members of society, it is also extremely expensive and wastes our precious tax dollars. As children, most people learn obedience through punishment. When we do something wrong , one or several privileges are taken away by our parents. Depending on the severity of a mistake, such punishment may last for a very short time or in some cases it may even be permanent by nature. Many parents inflict a common punishment on their young children of not allowing them to watch television for a certain amount of time which is usually measured in days or in weeks. Such disciplinary methods often prove to be positive learning experiences which teach us right from wrong and instill us with values which should prevent us from doing it again. It shows each of these dimensions to be constituted like a force field, within which predictable paradoxes, tensions and dilemmas play out. Existential Therapy is an approach to counselling that helps us to understand ourselves, other people and the world we all inhabit together. Existential Therapy helps people to build confidence that they are making good choices. Special Education Workbook Summary Workbook Summary Tónya Harris Liberty University Introduction: Special Education in the Individualized Education Program Special education is a form of instruction that serves to help individual students with disabilities in the classroom, or any other setting that is considered acceptable by the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. The process used to determine special education starts when either a teacher or a parent makes a referral to have an individual student evaluated to determine if there is a disability. Special education comes at no extra cost to the parents of the student. Gibb and Dyches (2016), mention how students with disabilities ages 3 to 21 must be granted Free Appropriate Public Education (FEPA), ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Gibb and Dyches (2016) state, Academic achievement refers to gaining requisite skills and knowledge for success in school (p. 47), and functional performance can be defined as applying knowledge and skills to meet daily needs (p. 47). Reading, writing, and math are academic achievement skills that are crucial to the students learning because they all are required for other subjects. In contrary, functional performance involves adaptive skills such as feeding and dressing oneself, and meeting appropriate school behaviors. Gibb and Dyches (2016) mention that the PLAAFP statement derives from reviewing the curriculum standards for academic achievement, determining the students current academic strengths and limitations, and assessing the students current functional strengths and limitations (p. 48). Measurable Annual Goals Measurable annual goals are used to identify what the individual student is expected to achieve within one year to address what effects the disability has caused. Gibb and Dyches (2016) define the word measurable as the behavior stated in the goal can be observed and measured to determine when it has been achieved (p. 60). Therefore, in order to be considered a measurable academic and functional performance goal the goal must be able to be measured, must meet the individual student needs that are in relation to the disability and cause problems within the general education curriculum, and must also meet any other additional ... • 20. Essay on Comparing The Soldier and Dulce et Decorum Est Comparing The Soldier and Dulce et Decorum Est The Soldier by Rupert Brooke and Dulce et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen were both written during world war one. War and death are the themes of both poems but they are written from different perspectives. Brooke seems to base his poem on myth because overall he says that it is good to die for your country while fighting at war is terrible and that it is every soldier for himself and not for your country. There are many reasons why Brooke and Owen have different attitudes to war. For example Brook wrote The Soldier at the beginning of the war but Owen wrote it in 1916. Take for example when Owen is describing in the final stanza the man which died from the earlier gas attack, Behind the wagon that we flung him in, And watch the white eyes writhing in his face, His hanging face, like a devil s sick of sin, If you could hear, at every dolt, the blood come gargling from the froth corrupted lungs. Bitter as the cud. Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues. In Brook s poem of The Soldier he uses his language softly to show the people at home that the war is good and that if people die there for their country they are looked upon as an honourable person. But in Owen s poem of Dulce et Decorum Est, it uses language harshly by using similes and metaphors to emphasise the misery he witnessed and the violence of war. Here are some examples, Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots of gas shells dropping softly behind. , His hanging face, like a devil s sick of sin. , My friend, you would not tell with such high zest to children ardent for some desperate glory, the old Lie: Duke et decorum est Pro parr/a man The Soldier suggests death is something to be welcomed and is simply a step towards an even better after life. There voices were not heard when it came to their communities. It took three young children to die by car crashes, and a peaceful candlelight vigil that turned into a fight between a neighborhood and the police (in which the police covered up their badges so that no one could report them to the police department) for them to want to make a change to free themselves from control and oppression. Analysis Of The Martin Guerre Scandal For historians, very little is known about the detailed lives of peasants in the sixteenth century France, in particular, their emotions, motives, and how they characterize relationships. The most common assumption for the life of peasant was an uneducation, monotonous lifestyle with little interesting factors. Fortunately for social historians, a strange occurrence happened in the small village of Artigat in the Pyrenees of Southwestern France and was perfectly documented and preserved by a judge of the court, Jean de Coras. While the court case and storyline was very detailed by Coras, there were many gaps in the characters motivations and reasonings behind their actions. In this statement, Davis implicates that the lives of the three commoners and the events that occurred can be very similar to that of the elite class in France at the time. Right from the start, Davis establishes her motives which discloses the notion that she is writing this story with her motive in mind instead of looking into historical facts and considering all aspects of the event. Her entire narrative fills the gaps with opinions solely placed to persuade readers of Davis own viewpoints, creating a skeptical review of the rest of her writing. One of Davis major accusations in the Martin Guerre record is Bertrand s role in the imposter s successful foolery of the town. Davis believes that much like the upper class, the peasants only seek out activities that benefit their own self interest. Davis supports this idea by making the claim that Bertrande was knowledgeable of the crime of impersonation and decided to partake in it. She quotes: She must have realized the difference; there is no mistaking the touch of a man . Either by explicit or tacit agreement, she helped him become her husband (Davis 44). In the first stanza, the speaker explains how such waltzing with his father is not easy, as speaker s father has had a little too much whiskey, which made the waltzing a little difficult as the father was under the influence and probably had difficulties keeping his balance. If we read on to the next stanza, it shows father is all over the place and having trouble keeping balance while dancing with his son in the kitchen. Mother seems to be upset about the situation, but only because pots and pans slid from the kitchen shelf onto the floor from all the romping. And finally the US national debt reached 120.6% of GDP in 2014 and still kept increasing till today. The surge in national debt during Bush and Obama administrations It is true that there was a surge in US national debt in past decade, the total federal debt was reaching 105% of GDP in 2012 which is the historically highest level since the Second World War. Although the crest existed in the president term of Obama, however, the rise of debt started long before Obama took office in the While House. In fact, after the national debt decline at the end of 20th century, it resumed increasing with Bush s first budget in fiscal 2002. And later on in 2007, the rise accelerated as the economy slid into the worst recession since the Great Depression. From figure 1 we could clearly see that Figure 1 Obama did a much better job of limiting the deficit. On the other hand, Bush made it went from about 58% ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Around the 19th century the city had doubled in size and it was developing into the city we know today. Immigrants were forced to move into tenement buildings and the city began to see an influx of people in the streets. The city realized it was time for the city to change and so they bought 700 acres from 58th to 106th Street in order to create a new park. We began our stroll around the park and visited the Conservatory Garden. The garden is known to be the only formal garden in the park. Running Loose is a novel that deals with Louie having to face big decisions that is hard for him especially since he is having to face them at such a stressful time in his life. The novel is relevant for today s young readers because in teenagers everyday lives they struggle with facing big decisions all around them whether they know it or not. An example from my personal experience would be one day when I was sitting in the bland walled, loud, dirty cafeteria eating lunch, as any normal teenager seems to do in high school, my friends and I were laughing and cutting jokes at one another. We were having such a wonderful time that we neglected to notice that a student who happened to be one of our peers seemed to be looking down at his food, sad, lonely, and needing comfort. By the time we saw the student sitting all alone it felt it might have been all too late to ask if we should go sit with him. • 41. The Pros And Cons Of Gentrification Everyday buildings and shops seem to be coming to a rust and becoming of age. There is a process in which it gives the neighborhood or streets a fresh new sense to the community. In doing this brings in a variety of different people from different customs and making the community more diverse. This process is called gentrification which is urban change, particularly, the transformation of a low income or economically depressed area of a city into a higher income more economically prosperous. Gentrification is not tied to race and ethnicity but social class. Although it seems like all negatives to the community because they have lost their childhood store or restaurant, there are positives to gentrification. Gentrification is beneficial to our community because of the displacement of not only the buildings but of the people, urban renewal, and property value. During gentrification there are certain displacements that improve and benefit our community as a whole. The displacement of people coming from all different races and culture increasing the diversity in the communities and not only create a diversity but also benefits the citizens around that community. Although some people believe the increase of diversity is a negative and will cause harm, studies found no evidence of displacement or harm ( Buntin). • 46. New England Colonies Essay The New England Colonies The colonies of New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut made up the New England colonies. Most of the Europeans in the New England colonies were there to escape the religious persecution they faced in England. They practiced a lot of different things in these colonies compared to the middle and southern and colonies of colonial america. The New England colonists, except for Rhode Island, were predominantly Puritans who practiced very strict religious lives. The civil government in these colonies dealt quite harshly with those who dared to disagree with the Puritan church. People were being exiled for speaking out against Puritanism. They whipped baptists. They cropped, or cut off, the ears of Quakers. They even went as far as to hang Quaker missionaries. They did all of this in an order to proselytize and convert people to be Puritan. Laws in the New England colonies made everyone attend a house of worship pay taxes that would be used to fund the salaries of the ministers. Government in the New England colonies were based upon elements of theocracy. The leaders and officials got their authority from a divine guidance and their civil authority was to enforce religious conformity. Citizens that didn t follow the Puritan s religious beliefs were considered to be a threat to the civil order and would get severely punished for it. However, the constant pressures placed on Starling to mask her femininity in order to gain respect, as a result of sexist attitudes portrayed in the film, as well as Starling s reliance on male characters, undermine the movie s liberal feminist perspective and reinforce a patriarchal ideology, thus rendering the film ideologically conflicted. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is obvious that Starling s contribution to the Buffalo Bill case is nothing to scoff at. She, often with the help of her also female friend, is the one to embark on the small journeys and discover many of the clues that lead to the discovery of Buffalo Bill, aka Jame Gumb. These include braving frequent encounters with the unsettling Hannibal Lecter, discovering and searching the storage unit, and uncovering the evidence that Gumb was making a woman suit, evidence which finally led her to his elusive place of dwelling, while her fellow male agents led a fruitless storming of an empty house miles away. She is also the one who in the end actually shoots and kills Gumb and physically and officially brings his reign of terror to an end. All these instances of Clarice Starling s success in her field do contribute to the idea of feminine power and equality. Here it would seem, that this acts direct evidence of a female being able to equal and even supersede a males abilities. However upon close examination, Starling s achievements are not without assistance from male figures and therefore cannot be considered a truly feminine achievement. First off, she is deeply driven by the early death of her father. Starling tells Lecter that her mother died when she was very young and her father was her whole world. However, her father, a small town sheriff, was unjustly murdered in his work. Starling is driven to her desire for achievement in the FBI by her immense longing to complete her father s work, emulate his image, and thus metaphorically avenge his death by finally bringing justice upon those who murder the innocent. Buffalo Bill, as the serial murderer of innocent young girls, serves as the perfect target at which Starling can direct these ambitions. Therefore, it could be argued that without ... • 48. Analysis Of The Poem Acquainted With The Night By... The poem Acquainted with the Night by Robert Frost is not simply about a walk being taken on a rainy night, as one would assume on their first reading. Instead a closer reading of the poem will reveal to the reader a much darker journey. As the speaker describes his trudge through the city streets, the reader begins to see that this is far more than a walk through a gloomy night; it is a man s journey through depression. While Frost s dark poem is written much like a sonnet, having fourteen lines, it is not a sonnet in the traditional sense, as it follows the terza rima rhyming scheme which is an interlocking three line rhyme scheme: aba, bcb, cdc, ded, and so on (Meyer, 2012, p. 1673). Terza rima is made up of tercets woven into a rhyme scheme that requires the end word of the second line in one tercet to supply the rhyme for the first and third lines in the next tercet, continuing the pattern until the final stanza or line. Borrowing this rhyme scheme from Dante Alighieri and by utilizing a few lines a mere fourteen Frost is able to paint a convincing picture to the reader of the true feeling of depression by using the literary elements of metaphor, imagery, and theme. Frost uses metaphors in Acquainted with the Night to express the darkness and loneliness that are familiar feelings for those that suffer with depression. Though the entire poem can be interpreted as a metaphor for depression, Frost uses individual words and phrases as metaphors as well. In the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
