PUN AND ASSONANCE
PUN 
 a play on words, sometimes on 
different senses of the same word and 
sometimes on the similar sense or 
sound of different words. 
Words which sound the same but have 
different meanings.
EXAMPLES 
The admiral’s motto was, ‘Do it schooner, not 
later. 
Did you hear about the French man who jumped 
off the Eiffel tower wearing the parachute and 
landed in the river? The police didn’t arrest him 
because he was clearly in seine.
ASSONANCE 
 is a literary device which is used 
within sentence and phrases to create 
rhythmic verses. 
 Identity or similarity in sound between 
internal vowels in neighboring words.
SHORT EXAMPLES OF ASSONANCE 
Take the gun and have fun. 
Fleet feet sweep by sleeping geese. 
Examples of assonance in poem 
Life it seems will fade away 
Drifting further everyday 
Getting lost within myself 
Nothing matters, no one else
