- Verbals are words formed
from a verb but function as a
different part of speech.
- In other words, verbals look
like they are verbs. But sorry,
they really function as NOUN,
ADJECTIVE, or as ADVERB.
- A gerund is a verbal that ends with
–ing and functions as a noun.
Form:
base form of verb + -ing = gerund
-read + ing = reading (gerund)
Reading helps you learn
English.
-wait + ing = waiting (gerund)
There is no point in waiting for
forever.
- An infinitive is a verbal
that functions as a noun and is
formed with
to + base form of the verb
- to + learn = to learn (infinitive)
To learn is important.
- to + write = to write (infinitive)

-A participle is a verbal that
functions as an adjective.
-It can be in present
participle or in past partciple.
-Present participle always
ends with -ing.
-Past participle usually ends
with –ed, -d, -t, -en, or –n.
