Centrifugal pump performance can be shown graphically on characteristic curves that plot total dynamic head, brake horsepower, efficiency, and net positive suction head over the pump's capacity range. Different types of pumps have different characteristic curve shapes: radial flow pumps have relatively flat head curves; mixed flow pumps have steeper head curves; and axial flow pumps have head and brake horsepower that increase drastically near shutoff. Manufacturers provide composite performance curves that show a pump's operation over various impeller diameters at a given speed.
