DEVELOPMENT
It was one’s
psychological
development in
interaction with a
social
environment.

Erikson (1902-1994) was an
American-German psychologist.
According to him there are eight
stages in psycho-social
development.

1. Trust Vs Mistrust
2. Autonomy Vs Shame and Doubt
3. Initiative Vs Guilt
4. Industry Vs Inferiority
5. Identity Vs Role Confusion
6. Imitation Vs Isolation
7. Generativity Vs Stagnation
8. Integrity Vs Despair

 This stage occurs in the first year of
life(Infancy).
 TRUST - Faith that thinks will be “all right”.
 Positive Outcome – Feeling of comfort
 MISTRUST – Develops when infants are
treated too negatively.
 Question- “Can I trust the world?”
 Key Events : Feeding
 Mother

 This stage occurs in the second year of life
(Toddler).
 Autonomy – The infants discover that their
behaviour is their own.
 Shame and Doubt – Develop when the infants
are punished too harshly.
 Question : “Is it ok to be me?”
 Key Events : Toilet training, Clothing
themselves
 Parents

 This stage occurs from three to six years(pre-
schooler).
 Initiative – Implied in the attempts at
imitation.
 Guilt – Occurs when the child’s developing
conscience feels in competition with parents.
 Question – “Is it ok to do, move and act?”
 Key Events : Using tools , making art
 Family

 This stage occurs from six to eleven years
(School child).
 Through social interactions, children begin to
develop a sense of pride in their abilities.
 Success - Sense of Competence
 Failure – Feeling of Inferiority
 Question – “Can I do this?”
 Key Events : Sports
 Neighbours, School

 This stage occurs from twelve to eighteen
years(Adolescence).
 Try to find their own identity.
 Success – Ability to stay true to themselves.
 Failure – A weak sense of self.
 Question – “Who am I?”
 Key Events : Social Relationships
 Peers

 This stage occurs from nineteen to forty
years(Middle Adult).
 Develop a positive close relationship with
others.
 Success – Strong relationship
 Failure – Loneliness
 Question – “Can I love?”
 Key Events : Romantic Relationship
 Friends

 This stage occurs from forty to sixty-five
years(Middle Adult).
 Continue to build their lives, focusing on
their career and family.
 Success – Feelings of usefulness and
accomplishment.
 Failure – Shallow involvement in world.
 Question – “Can I make my life meaningful?”
 Key Events : Work, Parenthood
 Workmates

 This stage occurs from sixty-five years to
death.
 Review their lives, reflecting on what they
have done.
 Success – Feelings of wisdom
 Failure – Regret
 Question – “Is it ok to have been me?”
 Key Events : Reflection on life
 Mankind

 Erikson’s theory complicates the task of
educators.
 This helps the teachers to know about
the diffferent stages in psycho-social
development.
 The teacher can help the students to
develop positive attitudes.
 The children of the class were given the
same social status because they belong
to the same stage.
