If we got a penny for every time we heard the word, “unprecedented” this last year, we’d all be able to retire
and head to the Bahamas, hopefully not virtually! That’s how many “unprecedented” events happened this
season. It’s been a season that almost no one in our generation has witnessed before.
“The Covid-19 pandemic triggered the worst in humanity where people had fist-
fights over toilet paper and hoarded food supplies without concern for others.
But it has also prompted the best in humanity.”
When faced with this never-before situation, U&I partnered with five other non-profits to help with the
humanitarian crisis that the migrant community faced during the lockdown. And we witnessed something
beautiful. We saw ordinary people sacrifice their time and resources to serve the migrants. We saw
housewives filling out travel forms for those who couldn’t read or write. We saw retired businessmen and
software engineers rolling up their sleeves and standing in the afternoon sun to hand out bottles of water
and packages of food. We saw people from every religious background, standing shoulder to shoulder,
united by one aim - helping the helpless.

5. At U&I we’ve always believed in the power of community.
“In the season of this pandemic, we saw that 'power' awaken in hundreds across
the country. We saw the power of saying, “This is my problem too.”
We saw migrant labourers, packed into railway platforms and police stations, with uncertainty and despair
written all over their faces. In the midst of the sea of tiredness, we had the privilege of meeting 12-year-old
Gayathri. This young girl was helping her parents who were labourers, to get back to their hometown. Unlike
her parents, Gayathri knew how to read and write, she could communicate easily in English - and that gave
her unparalleled confidence. In a situation where most migrant workers were helpless because of their lack
of education and, therefore, limited access to information, Gayathri represented hope.
Gayathri’s story reiterated to us the power of education. It showed us again that education is a game-
changer. It is a hope-giver.
These two principles – the power of community and the power of education – are the building blocks of U&I.
The Pandemic and its aftermath affirmed our commitment to building communities of change. In 2019-2020,
we saw lives transformed by these two ideas in action. We’ve captured those stories in this annual report.
But, more importantly, we’ve captured the hearts of India’s disadvantaged students as well as upwardly
mobile youth volunteers so they can create change together.

Sometimes, the unfortunate truth is that even kids can be mean. Seven-year-old
Priyanka was at the receiving end of this mean streak. When she came to the
learning center, her classmates would throw trash on her and call her names.
Priyanka’s only fault? She was from a supposedly “lower” class.
But the tutoring team spoke to Priyanka’s classmates about how each person is
created equal. The change didn’t happen overnight. It took several months of
reiterating the lessons on kindness and unbiased acceptance - again and again.
We finally saw other kids accepting Priyanka as a friend. We saw a child being
given a fair shot at life.

RUN OUT?
Shalini tried her best. But her best didn't seem good enough. She was a tenth-grade
student and her Board Exams loomed ahead. But Shalini’s efforts were not paying off
because her learning disabilities made retaining information especially difficult. Exams
only intensified the problem.
However, the U&I teach team was unwilling to give up. We paired Shalini with a
volunteer who gave it her all. Her tutors gave her mock exam upon mock exam till she
got comfortable with the idea. From getting zeros on her tests, Shalini managed to pass
the Pre-boards and appeared for her Board Exam with confidence.

AGAIN?
You may have heard about Abdul J Kalam studying under the streetlights when he had
no electricity in his home. Our students are no less inspirational. When the electricity at
the center went out, the students responded by simply turning on torches and dazzling
the volunteers with their commitment to their studies.
When the torchlights began to dim, they requested their tutors to turn on their mobile
phone lights instead. This commitment to excel shone like never before. We believe, we
have some Kalams in the making right in our U&I Learning centers.

HAVE BORDERS?
When Sheela was in her final year of school, she had one big dream: to crack those
board exams and prove all the nay-sayers wrong. The odds were stacked against her.
But that didn’t deter Sheela.
She put herself to work and with the help of her U&I tutors she planned out her day, did
mock tests and went in for tutoring every single week without fail. The result? This girl
scored a whopping 81% in her Board exams. She hopes to become a Chartered
Accountant one day and we have no doubt that she will nail that dream through her hard
work, boundless energy and her passion for excellence. Way to go, Sheela!

WANT TO SEE WHAT
LOOKS LIKE?
Enough is enough. That’s what our Teach team in Guwahati said. They made up their
minds that the three 10th grade boys in class would not fail their board exams. The boys
were lagging behind academically. If they failed, they would have to discontinue school.
So every single day, during lunch breaks at college, volunteers made a mad dash for the
learning center. After college, more running, more classes. Timetables were prepped.
Lesson plans curated. Debriefs conducted. For 2 whole months. All seven days of the
week.
Finally, the breakthrough. All three boys passed their 10th grade. These boys get to
continue their studies. These boys get to stand tall. These boys get to feel proud of
themselves. These boys are a testament to the fact that giving up is never an option.

30. WHAT MAKES THE
The training at Breakthrough will always be special to
me. This was when I met the Guwahati Team for the first
time. I still remember that moment, when 5 of us reached
the venue at around midnight and it felt like we were long
lost friends. From then on, it has been a beautiful
journey. The training set a strong foundation for our
learning centers in Guwahati.

GIVING UP ON
SOMEONE'S DISABILITY
Mayaram was brought to the Boys’ Home after a botched medical procedure left him
paralyzed. The shelter home where Mayaram grew up could no longer keep him as they
simply didn’t have the resources to deal with a paralysed special-needs boy. Almost as if
he were a piece of luggage that nobody wanted, Mayaram was brought to CMHR - an
angry, sullen and unresponsive young man. But after months of therapy and social
interaction with the U&I team, Mayaram is slowly changing. He is re-learning to colour,
how to form small words and how to dress himself. Without a doubt, the last few months
have been tough on this young man, but with U&I’s help, he's simply not giving up.

FROM DISABILITY, TO FINDING
When Karibasamma came to the Women’s Home she was always listless, completely
disinterested in any of the group activities. At other times, she was restless and agitated,
even fighting with the other women. But our team discovered Karibasamma’s secret
power. All it took was building a friendship with her to find out that she had excellent
hand-eye coordination. Frisbee games became her favourite activity. Slowly, she followed
simple physical exercises, without bothering the other women. Gradually she showed a
keen interest in vocational activities like colouring, stitching and even stringing flowers.
The once-inactive woman is now attempting to speak to our staff. There is a spark in her
eyes, a spark that shows that she wants to engage with life.
