healthy lifestyle
– A healthy lifestyle is one which helps to keep and improve people's health and
well-being.
– A healthy lifestyle is a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or
dying early.
– Many governments and non-governmental organizations have made big efforts
in healthy lifestyle and health promotion. It helps to benefit your critical health
numbers, including weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood cholesterol.
Healthy living is a lifelong effect. The ways to being healthy include healthy
eating, physical activities, weight management, and stress management.
Components of a healthy
lifestyle
– Healthy lifestyle is, mostly, associated with:
– Family traditions
– Health education
– Likable occupation
– Safe environment
– Adequate nutrition
– Physical fitness
– Absence of bad habits or addiction
– Personal hygiene
– Love and tenderness
– Positive social communication
– Proper sleeping pattern
– We need to have policy changes and a supportive environment to encourage
people to live healthier lives
– THE ANSWER: HEALTH PROMOTION
– Health Promotion (HP) goes to the core of lifestyle by addressing culture and
environment. HP entails a paradigm in how we view health. It is about
empowering individuals and communities to make informed, positive health
decisions.
– The Philippines is lagging behind its Asian neighbors in enabling its citizens to
increase control over their health, global health expert Dr Prakit Vathesatogkit
said.
– "In ASEAN,” he said, “5 countries already have a law on health promotion. The
good time for the Philippines to set up a mechanism is now. The money is there.
It just needs to be tapped. Otherwise, all these budget (sic) will go to the profit
of the [tobacco and alcohol] industry.”
– Irene Reyes, managing director of HealthJustice Philippines, said that HP is a
worthy investment as the Philippine healthcare system in its current form is
“favorably biased to managing illness rather than encouraging wellness.”
– In 2001, Thailand passed the BE 2544 otherwise known as the Health
Promotion Foundation Act. It allocated a sizeable budget for mass media
campaigns on tobacco and alcohol control, physical activity and healthy diet,
road safety, and the mitigation of other risk factors that lead to health-related
problems
– The government agency responsible for health promotion in the Philippines is
the National Center for Health Promotion (NCHP) under the Department of
Health (DOH).
– General Functions and Structure
– Develop directions, policies, standards, and guidelines pertaining to health
promotion
– Provide policy advice to partner agencies related to the health
determinants
– Provide technical assistance to Central Office cluster/bureau, CHDs and
retained hospitals on health promotion
–
NATIONAL CENTER FOR HEALTH
PROMOTION
– Take the leadership in the implementation of national campaigns as
determined by DOH management
– Provide health promotion data to CO, CHDs, retained hospitals and other
partners
– Develop, produce and provide IEC materials to CO, CHDs, retained hospitals
and other partners
– Establish networks with partners especially those involved in peace, shelter,
livelihood, education, food, income, eco-system, social relations,
equity, poverty, social justice, empowerment of women and human
rights.
– Promoting healthy lifestyles is a challenge for many primary care practices.
Although most patients/people understand the importance of physical activity
and healthy eating, many seem unable to change their unhealthy behaviors to
reduce weight and improve chronic conditions.
– Medications often take a predominant role in the treatment of these patients,
even though medications alone are rarely completely effective for chronic
conditions, and lifestyle changes have been shown to significantly reduce
morbidity and mortality rates for most chronic diseases.
PRESENT TIME
DOH’ Health lifestyle program to address
noncommunicable diseases in PH
– The Department of Health (DOH) launched its nationwide healthy lifestyle
movement Pilipinas Go4Health which encourages Filipinos to commit to a
healthy lifestyle through physical activity, proper nutrition, and the prevention
or cessation of smoking and alcohol consumption.
– The health lifestyle program was launched to help prevent and control
noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the country.
– A significant proportion of Filipino adults are exposed to NCD risks which
include tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity. In
2008, 57% of the total mortality rate in the Philippines is due to NCDs such as
cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease.
– The increase in NCDs are affecting populations of low and middle income
countries like the Philippines, at a young age, reducing the productivity of the
working age population and stifling economic growth. Hence, the Pilipinas
Go4Health aspires to provide options for healthy living and making these
options accessible to every Filipinos.
– Filipinos need to be encouraged to form healthy habits as the rate of deaths
due to so-called lifestyle ailments such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer,
respiratory diseases, and diabetes has become alarming.
– non-communicable diseases claim more than 36 million lives worldwide
annually," he said. "At this rate, people born today may die before the age of 60.
– while highly preventable, these diseases continue
t to rise in the Philippines due to lack of regular
e exercise, improper diet, and excessive drinking
an and smoking.
– Ona said the Department of Health is hoping that through the Pilipinas
Go4Health movement, more Filipinos will be inspired and make a personal
commitment to embrace better daily habits.
"Healthy lifestyle is a choice," Ona said. "If you love your family, and value your
workspace and community, you must support this movement."
– Tips for healthy living
To help Pinoys get started, the DOH gave the following advice:
1. Go Smoke-Free
Ten Filipinos die every hour because of illnesses related to cigarette smoking, according to Ona. He
said 17.3 million Filipinos aged 15 years and older are tobacco smokers, based on data from the
2009 Global Audit Tobacco Survey.
"GATS data show that a number of smokers accessed tobacco when they were too young to make
informed choices. By the time they are old enough, they may find it very hard to quit and some may
already suffer its consequences," he said.
Smoking is directed linked to lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchial disorders, according to DOH.
– 2. Go Sustanya
Consumption of salt, sugar, fats, and high-calorie food has to be reduced to prevent
hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, as well as obesity. A DOH statement on proper
nutrition added that increased intake of fiber, such as fruits and whole grains, is needed to
lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels.
In an interview with GMA News Online, Ona said the DOH is planning to propose a bill that
would regulate food labeling.
"If you buy food ngayon, 'yung contents nasa likod, so who reads it?" he said. "If you want to
give that information, ilagay natin sa harap."
– 3. Go Sigla
Only 7 out of 100 Filipino adults exercise at least three to four
times a week, the DOH said, based on findings from the Food and
Nutrition Institute (FNRI).
"The human body is designed for motion," Ona said.
Go Slow sa Tagay
– According to DOH, the effect of alcohol varies in every person, and while it may offer
health benefits to some, it may actually impose a major health risk to others.
Excessive alchohol consumption can lead to drunk-driving accidents, which is one of
the reasons cited by President Benigno Aquino III when he signed into law last May
a bill penalizing drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and dangerous drugs.
Republic Act (R.A.) 10586, signed by the president on May 27, gives law
enforcement officials the authority to conduct sobriety and breath alcohol tests on
drivers found to have "indications" of drunk driving, such as overspeeding, weaving,
swerving and lane straddling.
Lifestyle champions
– To help promote the campaign, the DOH has asked the help of some
personalities and athletes to serve as "champions" for healthy lifestyles
Some Laws Pertaining in
Promotion of Healthy Lifestyle
– The four-year Aquino administration has already passed five landmark health
laws addressing crucial health-related issues towards a healthier Filipino
– These legislative gems are the Universal Health Care (UHC), Sin Tax,
Reproductive Health, National Health Insurance, and Graphic Health Warnings
Acts or Laws.
Universal Health Care Law
REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10606
– The law mandates that most Filipinos—the entire population as much as
possible especially the “poorest of the poor”—should be covered by health
insurance.
– When asked if this has been achieved already, Sec. Ona confidently replied, “We’re there, almost
there. Maybe we’re already there.” Data as of June 2014 show that 82 percent of Filipinos are
already covered with premium subsidy. Sec. Ona explained that the global standard for UHC is that
about 85 percent of the population must be covered.
National Health Insurance Act of
2013
REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10606
– RA 10606 (An Act Amending Republic Act No. 7875, Otherwise Known as the
National Health Insurance Act of 1995”, As Amended, and for Other Purposes)
is a law amending the PhilHealth Law to provide wider coverage to indigents.
– Sec. Ona said he hopes that the list of poor Filipinos of the Department of Social
Welfare and Development (DSWD) will be completed at the latter part of this
year.
Graphic Health Warnings Law
Republic Act No. 10643
– This law was passed recently this year requiring the cigarette manufacturers to
put pictures to depict the ill effects of smoking in tobacco product packaging
and labels.
Responsible Parenthood and
Reproductive Health Law of 2012
Republic Act No. 10354
– The Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012
(RepublicAct No. 10354), informally known as the Reproductive Health Law or
RH Law, is alaw in the Philippines, which guarantees universal access to
methods on contraception, fertility control, sexual education, and maternal
care.
– The DOH has formed the Center for Family, Maternal and Child Care that is headed by
Undersecretary Janette Garin.
– It is a bureau or cluster encompassing all aspects of mother and child care. It is
tasked to identify strategies, and implement budgeting for effective family
planning.
– The Population Commission (POPCOM) will be working closely with this
bureau.“ We have significantly increased the budget for RH,” remarked Sec.
Ona. He said that from the previous budget of around PhP 800 million, the
government has allotted PhP 3.5 billion for 2015.
Sin Tax Reform Law of 2012
REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10351
– AN ACT RESTRUCTURING THE EXCISE TAX ON ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO
PRODUCTS.
– Its full implementation started last stated that the passage of the Sin Tax Law is
very important to the country’s healthcare pursuits. “Because of the income or
budget increase that was made possible through sin taxes, we were able to
enroll a total of 14.7 million families this year, from 5.2 million poorest Filipino
families from 2011 to 2013,” he said.
THANK YOU :)

  • 9. PROMOTION OF HEALTHY LIFESTYLE Submitted To: Mrs. Erlinda E. Domingo RN,MPH,CESO IV Submitted By: Jhonee F. Balmeo RN
  • 10. healthy lifestyle – A healthy lifestyle is one which helps to keep and improve people's health and well-being. – A healthy lifestyle is a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or dying early. – Many governments and non-governmental organizations have made big efforts in healthy lifestyle and health promotion. It helps to benefit your critical health numbers, including weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood cholesterol. Healthy living is a lifelong effect. The ways to being healthy include healthy eating, physical activities, weight management, and stress management.
  • 11. Components of a healthy lifestyle – Healthy lifestyle is, mostly, associated with: – Family traditions – Health education – Likable occupation – Safe environment – Adequate nutrition – Physical fitness – Absence of bad habits or addiction – Personal hygiene – Love and tenderness – Positive social communication – Proper sleeping pattern
  • 12. – We need to have policy changes and a supportive environment to encourage people to live healthier lives – THE ANSWER: HEALTH PROMOTION – Health Promotion (HP) goes to the core of lifestyle by addressing culture and environment. HP entails a paradigm in how we view health. It is about empowering individuals and communities to make informed, positive health decisions.
  • 13. – The Philippines is lagging behind its Asian neighbors in enabling its citizens to increase control over their health, global health expert Dr Prakit Vathesatogkit said. – "In ASEAN,” he said, “5 countries already have a law on health promotion. The good time for the Philippines to set up a mechanism is now. The money is there. It just needs to be tapped. Otherwise, all these budget (sic) will go to the profit of the [tobacco and alcohol] industry.”
  • 14. – Irene Reyes, managing director of HealthJustice Philippines, said that HP is a worthy investment as the Philippine healthcare system in its current form is “favorably biased to managing illness rather than encouraging wellness.” – In 2001, Thailand passed the BE 2544 otherwise known as the Health Promotion Foundation Act. It allocated a sizeable budget for mass media campaigns on tobacco and alcohol control, physical activity and healthy diet, road safety, and the mitigation of other risk factors that lead to health-related problems
  • 15. – The government agency responsible for health promotion in the Philippines is the National Center for Health Promotion (NCHP) under the Department of Health (DOH). – General Functions and Structure – Develop directions, policies, standards, and guidelines pertaining to health promotion – Provide policy advice to partner agencies related to the health determinants – Provide technical assistance to Central Office cluster/bureau, CHDs and retained hospitals on health promotion – NATIONAL CENTER FOR HEALTH PROMOTION
  • 16. – Take the leadership in the implementation of national campaigns as determined by DOH management – Provide health promotion data to CO, CHDs, retained hospitals and other partners – Develop, produce and provide IEC materials to CO, CHDs, retained hospitals and other partners – Establish networks with partners especially those involved in peace, shelter, livelihood, education, food, income, eco-system, social relations, equity, poverty, social justice, empowerment of women and human rights.
  • 17. – Promoting healthy lifestyles is a challenge for many primary care practices. Although most patients/people understand the importance of physical activity and healthy eating, many seem unable to change their unhealthy behaviors to reduce weight and improve chronic conditions. – Medications often take a predominant role in the treatment of these patients, even though medications alone are rarely completely effective for chronic conditions, and lifestyle changes have been shown to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rates for most chronic diseases.
  • 18. PRESENT TIME DOH’ Health lifestyle program to address noncommunicable diseases in PH – The Department of Health (DOH) launched its nationwide healthy lifestyle movement Pilipinas Go4Health which encourages Filipinos to commit to a healthy lifestyle through physical activity, proper nutrition, and the prevention or cessation of smoking and alcohol consumption. – The health lifestyle program was launched to help prevent and control noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) in the country.
  • 19.
  • 20. – A significant proportion of Filipino adults are exposed to NCD risks which include tobacco and alcohol use, unhealthy diets, and physical inactivity. In 2008, 57% of the total mortality rate in the Philippines is due to NCDs such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and chronic respiratory disease.
  • 21. – The increase in NCDs are affecting populations of low and middle income countries like the Philippines, at a young age, reducing the productivity of the working age population and stifling economic growth. Hence, the Pilipinas Go4Health aspires to provide options for healthy living and making these options accessible to every Filipinos.
  • 22. – Filipinos need to be encouraged to form healthy habits as the rate of deaths due to so-called lifestyle ailments such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, respiratory diseases, and diabetes has become alarming. – non-communicable diseases claim more than 36 million lives worldwide annually," he said. "At this rate, people born today may die before the age of 60.
  • 23. – while highly preventable, these diseases continue t to rise in the Philippines due to lack of regular e exercise, improper diet, and excessive drinking an and smoking.
  • 24. – Ona said the Department of Health is hoping that through the Pilipinas Go4Health movement, more Filipinos will be inspired and make a personal commitment to embrace better daily habits. "Healthy lifestyle is a choice," Ona said. "If you love your family, and value your workspace and community, you must support this movement."
  • 25. – Tips for healthy living To help Pinoys get started, the DOH gave the following advice: 1. Go Smoke-Free Ten Filipinos die every hour because of illnesses related to cigarette smoking, according to Ona. He said 17.3 million Filipinos aged 15 years and older are tobacco smokers, based on data from the 2009 Global Audit Tobacco Survey. "GATS data show that a number of smokers accessed tobacco when they were too young to make informed choices. By the time they are old enough, they may find it very hard to quit and some may already suffer its consequences," he said. Smoking is directed linked to lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchial disorders, according to DOH.
  • 26. – 2. Go Sustanya Consumption of salt, sugar, fats, and high-calorie food has to be reduced to prevent hypertension and cardiovascular diseases, as well as obesity. A DOH statement on proper nutrition added that increased intake of fiber, such as fruits and whole grains, is needed to lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels. In an interview with GMA News Online, Ona said the DOH is planning to propose a bill that would regulate food labeling. "If you buy food ngayon, 'yung contents nasa likod, so who reads it?" he said. "If you want to give that information, ilagay natin sa harap."
  • 27. – 3. Go Sigla Only 7 out of 100 Filipino adults exercise at least three to four times a week, the DOH said, based on findings from the Food and Nutrition Institute (FNRI). "The human body is designed for motion," Ona said.
  • 28. Go Slow sa Tagay – According to DOH, the effect of alcohol varies in every person, and while it may offer health benefits to some, it may actually impose a major health risk to others. Excessive alchohol consumption can lead to drunk-driving accidents, which is one of the reasons cited by President Benigno Aquino III when he signed into law last May a bill penalizing drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and dangerous drugs. Republic Act (R.A.) 10586, signed by the president on May 27, gives law enforcement officials the authority to conduct sobriety and breath alcohol tests on drivers found to have "indications" of drunk driving, such as overspeeding, weaving, swerving and lane straddling.
  • 29. Lifestyle champions – To help promote the campaign, the DOH has asked the help of some personalities and athletes to serve as "champions" for healthy lifestyles
  • 30. Some Laws Pertaining in Promotion of Healthy Lifestyle – The four-year Aquino administration has already passed five landmark health laws addressing crucial health-related issues towards a healthier Filipino – These legislative gems are the Universal Health Care (UHC), Sin Tax, Reproductive Health, National Health Insurance, and Graphic Health Warnings Acts or Laws.
  • 31. Universal Health Care Law REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10606 – The law mandates that most Filipinos—the entire population as much as possible especially the “poorest of the poor”—should be covered by health insurance. – When asked if this has been achieved already, Sec. Ona confidently replied, “We’re there, almost there. Maybe we’re already there.” Data as of June 2014 show that 82 percent of Filipinos are already covered with premium subsidy. Sec. Ona explained that the global standard for UHC is that about 85 percent of the population must be covered.
  • 32. National Health Insurance Act of 2013 REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10606 – RA 10606 (An Act Amending Republic Act No. 7875, Otherwise Known as the National Health Insurance Act of 1995”, As Amended, and for Other Purposes) is a law amending the PhilHealth Law to provide wider coverage to indigents. – Sec. Ona said he hopes that the list of poor Filipinos of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will be completed at the latter part of this year.
  • 33. Graphic Health Warnings Law Republic Act No. 10643 – This law was passed recently this year requiring the cigarette manufacturers to put pictures to depict the ill effects of smoking in tobacco product packaging and labels.
  • 34. Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law of 2012 Republic Act No. 10354 – The Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act of 2012 (RepublicAct No. 10354), informally known as the Reproductive Health Law or RH Law, is alaw in the Philippines, which guarantees universal access to methods on contraception, fertility control, sexual education, and maternal care. – The DOH has formed the Center for Family, Maternal and Child Care that is headed by Undersecretary Janette Garin.
  • 35. – It is a bureau or cluster encompassing all aspects of mother and child care. It is tasked to identify strategies, and implement budgeting for effective family planning. – The Population Commission (POPCOM) will be working closely with this bureau.“ We have significantly increased the budget for RH,” remarked Sec. Ona. He said that from the previous budget of around PhP 800 million, the government has allotted PhP 3.5 billion for 2015.
  • 36. Sin Tax Reform Law of 2012 REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10351 – AN ACT RESTRUCTURING THE EXCISE TAX ON ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO PRODUCTS. – Its full implementation started last stated that the passage of the Sin Tax Law is very important to the country’s healthcare pursuits. “Because of the income or budget increase that was made possible through sin taxes, we were able to enroll a total of 14.7 million families this year, from 5.2 million poorest Filipino families from 2011 to 2013,” he said.
