Progressive waves transmit energy as they propagate from one place to another through a medium. They are generated when a vibrating object does work on the particles of a medium, causing them to oscillate and transmit energy from one point to the next. Examples include waves spreading out on the surface of water when a pebble is dropped in, with the disturbance moving outward in all directions at the same rate.
